PoliticsWashington Osifo: The Man Who Saw The Kingdom But Never Entered* by Joeehiz(op): 10:22pm On Aug 09, 2022
*Washington Osifo: The Man Who Saw the Kingdom but Never Entered*

*_By Crusoe Osagie_*

For a man who saw the promised land but never entered, bouts of lamentation are an expected psychiatric response.
It is therefore understandable to have read Washington Osifo’s hogwash titled Edo Political Class Under the Sword of Damocles, in which he vented his frustration from political obscurity.

The perpetual lawmaker-elect, Washington Osifo, who contested the 2019 election to represent Uhunmwonde State Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, was buoyed to victory by Governor Godwin Obaseki’s popularity, but due to his primordial allegiance to the Godfather from Edo North, he sold his birth right for a proverbial pot of porridge.

Today, Osifo is throwing a pity party, claiming to be speaking for the political class in Edo State and arrogating to himself a voice he has since lost with his shameful public conduct.

Osifo has gone through the complete cycle in dealing with his political misfortune from the initial denial to whining about his loss and then throwing infantile tantrums at perceived enemies, who he thinks are responsible for his ill-fortune. He does this so frequently that he now sounds like a broken record.

Only men with a modicum of honour can actually hold themselves responsible when they blow their chances. Osifo is hardly a whole man, so he looks for others to blame for his self-inflicted misery.

His recent piece convinces the reader that he is a good armature. He goes on to suggest that politicians hand over power to themselves. What arrant disregard for ‘we the people!’ In Osifo’s reasoning, where do the people come in?

He speaks so highly of the political class in Nigeria. Which political class exactly? The same one that has now nearly run Nigeria aground as a failed state?

Osifo is pretty much like the many Israelites who saw the promised land but never entered into it.

It is interesting that Osifo, who claims to hold a doctorate degree, would side with his godfather, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole over and above the interests and political future of the thousands of constituents from Uhunmwonde who lifted him to election victory and who expected astute representation in return for their votes.

The incredible story of how Osifo and his co-perpetual lawmakers-elect squandered their electoral fortune and the interest of their people on the alter of base subservience to Oshiomhole could easily pass as one of the ‘wonders of the world.’

It is hard to tell what Osifo sees when he stands before a mirror every day: he is supposed to be in Edo State House of Assembly representing his constituents, but is in a pub drowning his sorrows in inexpensive liquor.

To hear Osifo make a case for the sustenance of this same political class speaks volumes about the character of this middle-aged man who clearly has never done any other honest work in his life and therefore possesses no other skill but hanging around the corridor of politics.

It is therefore not surprising that despite the landmark reforms recorded in Edo in the last five years, he still argues against the achievements of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Edo has witnessed unprecedented changes that have positioned it for greatness, especially with the Ossiomo Power project, which is providing electricity to streetlights, government buildings, the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and industrial clusters in the Benin metropolis.

The Benin landscape is also being transformed with the gradual manifestation of the Benin Cultural Masterplan, with its anchor project, the Benin Mall coming on stream.

The Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP), an initiative of Governor Obaseki, has attracted about $500m into the state’s economy. Through the programme, the state is now reviving the palm plantation system and is positioned to fill 20 percent of the supply gap for the country’s oil palm products. With all of these, it is surprising that Osifo has refused to see all of these.

The tantrums by Osifo expose him as someone who has been overcome by boredom as he is still licking his wounds after his party denied him the Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde House of Representatives ticket, which he hoped to clinch on the singular fact that he deserves pity for political misfortune.

Osifo has lost out in this political era. So he should subject himself to penance and other purgative exercise required of a man who has lost his way. He may perhaps re-approach the rostrum in another era to seek to gain public trust and attempt to run for an elective position.

CareerEdo INEC REC, Sinikiem Reaping The Fruits Of His Electoral Misconduct* by Joeehiz(op): 10:18am On Jul 31, 2022
*Edo INEC REC, Sinikiem reaping the fruits of his electoral misconduct*

Elections are the cornerstone of democracy. Sound electoral laws, systems and processes guarantee the conduct of a free, credible and fair election, ensuring the emergence of legitimate and democratically elected government that is responsive and accountable to citizens.

This is why umpires who superintend the process of selection for this endearing participatory system of government are persons believed and seen within the public prism as above aboard.

This means that they must not be partial, parochial and corrupt. They are at all times expected and should be seen and perceived to uphold the tenets of integrity, patriotism and professionalism, in line with the mandate of the electoral commission for the conduct of credible polls, especially in a multi-ethnic setting like Nigeria.

It is against this background that the invitation by the police of Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem, for complicity in a case of forgery becomes highly disturbing in the face of what his enviable office is constitutionally and morally mandated to discharge.

The electoral umpire was picked for allegations forgery, conspiracy and unlawful assembly. His arrest followed a petition by the Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, to the Police Command, wherein he accused the INEC REC of forging primary election results, which a faction of the party tendered in filling cases at the Federal High Courts in Abuja and Edo State.

Sinikiem was said to have been induced by external elements within the Edo PDP, muddling up the electoral process and disregarding INEC’s guidelines on how elections should be conducted to perfect the play of his paymasters.

According to the petition dated 20th July, 2022, and addressed to the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Aziegbemi, the Edo PDP chairman said, “In preparation towards the conduct of the 2023 general elections, political parties are mandated under the Electoral Act to conduct congresses and primaries. It was in consonance with the Electoral Act that the National Working Committee of the PDP set up various panels to conduct the delegates' congresses and the actual primaries for the selection of candidates nationwide.

“In furtherance of the above assignment, my office formally wrote to Dr. Sinikem with my signature, intimating him of the respective dates, times and locations for the conduct of the delegates and primary elections across the State. Dr. Sinikiem in ignoring my correspondences and contrary to the processes set down by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, purportedly monitored some primaries.

“Upon the conclusion of the Congress/primary election(s) exercise and after the respective panels set up by the NWC of our party had forwarded the results thereof to our national Chairman in Abuja, Dr. Sinikiem decided to appoint himself as the returning officer in respect of the primaries he conducted and monitored at unauthorized venues and accordingly forged the PDP primary election results in favour of aspirants who lost In the respective Constituencies and Senatorial Districts.

“The forged primary election results of the PDP are what enabled the aforesaid aspirants to file two separate actions in the Abuja and Benin Divisions of the Federal High Court. And this is what is currently fueling a new crisis within our State chapter of the PDP.”

He said that it is on the basis of the foregoing that “one cannot but submit that Dr. Sinikiem’s conduct of preparing, signing, stamping and executing primary election results of the PDP, without lawful authority or excuse is contrary to the provisions of the Criminal Code on forgery. We shall furnish the Command with credible evidence during the investigation to buttress the allegations in this petition.

“In the interest of justice, adherence to the rule of law and to avoid the breach of public peace, I pray that the allegations in this petition be thoroughly investigated, and the suspect charged to court, if found culpable.”

As expected in a democratic and lawful system, the police apprehended the electoral umpire for circumventing democratic principles of fair play, fairness, justice and corruptly enriching himself at the detriment of public good.

Rather than face the consequences of his actions, Sinikiem and his cohorts went ahead to hire social media wailers who are lamenting the ‘persecution’ of the electoral umpire instead of supporting the process to sanitize the nation’s electoral body, purging it of the
likes of Sinikiem and his sponsors.

How can a sane individual plead amnesty for a top electoral officer who has betrayed his oath of office.

The Edo INEC REC, Sinikiem is reaping the fruits of his electoral misconduct, and just like the INEC national has dissociated itself from the corrupt umpire, calling for his trial and persecution if found guilty, other well-meaning Nigerians must join the Edo PDP and the police in its quest for an electoral body that is transparent and without corrupt officials.

Seeking his disengagement would just amount to patting him in the back. Besides diligent prosecution, the authorities must not only stress impartiality as a watchword but must also ensure adherence every now and then for people in positions of trust, ensuring that anyone found wanting is made to face the full wrath of the law.

The Edo State Police Command has detained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner in Edo State, Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem, over alleged forgery, conspiracy and unlawful assembly.

Sinikiem was arrested following a petition by the Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, to the Police Command, wherein he accused the INEC REC of forging primary election results, which a faction of the party tendered in filing cases at the Federal High Courts in Abuja and Edo State.

In the petition dated 20th July, 2022, and addressed to the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Aziegbemi said: “I write this petition in my capacity as the State Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (thereinafter referred to as the PDP) against Dr. Johnson Alaibo Sinkiem, the resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo State.

*Security: Edo to register, issue identification cards to residents*

*_…as govt moves to shutdown unregistered markets_*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that his administration is concluding plans to commence the issuance of identification cards to residents across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state as part of measures to check insecurity.

The governor disclosed this while addressing stakeholders at a security meeting held in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state.

He said, “We are launching the Edo State Resident Identification System. Every resident in Edo must have an identity card. The identity card will be linked to the Biometric Verification Number (BVN) so that we know who is who.

“With this, if anything happens, we can follow up. We are not saying that we will not accept visitors. We are not saying that we are going to send people away, but if you must live with us, we must know you.

“We must have the addresses of all the markets in our local government areas. The idea of markets just erupting in people’s houses and without them being registered must stop. All such markets must be closed. The laws specified how markets can be set up.

“If there is a fire incident tomorrow, we can't even get there. People will be shouting that we have lost our goods, and because we didn’t register that place as a market, we are unable to provide the facilities like water and all the things you need for people to trade there."

Obaseki continued: “These markets never seem to close. Are markets not supposed to close? Don't they have a closing and opening time? But these markets never close. People live there. Investigations carried out by security personnel show that all sorts of things happen there when these markets are supposed to have closed.”

“We will have to close down all unregistered markets. If you want a place as a market, the local government council must do the needful and also provide them with relevant facilities for a proper market," the governor noted.

Speaking on the role of vigilantes in tackling insecurity in the state, Obaseki said the training of the first batch of 500 vigilantes will commence on August 22nd at the Nigeria Police Barracks in Ogida, noting that only registered vigilante groups will benefit from the initiative.

“On the 12th of September, each local government will give us the list of everybody they have registered to operate as motorcycle or tricycle riders.

“Effective the following Monday, we will start to enforce the rules that anybody who has not registered cannot operate as Okada and Keke NAPEP riders. We have agreed that we will provide additional logistics for security operations in Edo North, particularly the provision of more motorcycles for the rural areas.

On the anti-grazing law, the governor assured, “By the end of August, members of the committee for enforcement and implementation of the anti-grazing law will be inaugurated. Open grazing has been banned in Edo since the 27th of May this year."

Commending the efforts of security personnel on bush combing, the governor lauded the security operatives for continually carrying out surveillance operations in all the forests in the state, noting, “I understand that the bush combing exercise has been on and it has been successful. However, we have had some incidents since the last meeting, our monthly security meeting has revealed some flash points where these activities are more.”

In his contribution, the Olokpe of Okpe Kingdom in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo, His Royal Highness, Oba Idogu III, commended the governor for his prompt intervention in tackling insecurity in the state.

Also speaking, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Deke Kanoba, the Egiegbai II of Ekperi kingdom, in Etsako Central Local Government Area of the state, urged security personnel to cooperate with vigilante groups in providing security in rural areas.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said there are no plans to lay off the staff of the state-owned newspaper, the Nigerian Observer, noting that the media outfit is being revamped and upgraded to conform to the requirements of the digital era to enhance productivity.

Obaseki gave the assurance while addressing journalists shortly after taking a tour of the ongoing revamp of the media outfit in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Recall that the government, in line with the reforms of the state-owned media organisations, directed the closure of the newspaper for a period of one month, for re-organisation and re-launch of the media outfit.

The governor at the tour assured that “nobody will be laid off,” noting that those who cannot be retrained in digital media will be redeployed to other ministries of government.

“I am sure that there are other duties they can perform in the Ministry of Communication and Orientation, as well as other ministries and agencies of government,” he added.

On the ongoing revamp of the media outfit, Obaseki said, “They are actually printing online. As far as I am concerned, the Nigerian Observer is alive. You may not see the old building but it is running. As a government, what we are trying to do is to revive the media, culture and sports sectors because these are the new economy.

“We are taking advantage of the history of this premises to rebuild the press that was here before. We replaced the 50 years old press building with a modern and digital web press.

“Not just to print only the Observer, we expect that it would serve the whole of the sub-region. We also have a speed master to do digital printing. You can't have the media without a print. So, this is the print aspect of the ecosystem that we are creating.”

The governor continued: “We have taken the old Nigerian Observer press and we have built it into a world-class sound stage for film and music. The sound stage is being prepared for the Edo film festival which will take place in August.

“We are equipping the studio so that our young people who are into the production of music and movies and don't have the money to invest in this kind of high-end equipment can always come here to do so. That is where we can energize the already active creative spirit in our young people, particularly in music and movies.”

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday, returned to Benin City, the Edo State capital after three weeks of annual leave, amid a rousing welcome by supporters and other Edo residents.

Obaseki was also in Osun State where he played a critical role in the victory of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke in last Saturday's Osun governorship election.

The governor was received by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, alongside other government functionaries, leaders and members of the PDP.

Shaibu acted in the governor's stead while he was away.

Obaseki said, “I think the PDP victory in Osun clearly shows that the election of 2023 is PDP's to lose. We will not take it for granted. There is quite a bit of work to do; we need to go back home to talk to our brothers and sisters and improve the spread of the party's membership.

“We are going to make sure that we come together and work together because victory is certainly ours.”

“If we could win in Osun state, I see us winning the 2023 elections and going to Aso Rock,” he added.

Hailing Edo people and PDP faithful for their undying support for his administration, Obaseki noted, “I owe PDP a lot of gratitude for letting me into the party when they did and I believe as a loyal party member, it is my responsibility to contribute my own quota to the growth and development of the party and that is exactly what we did in Osun.

“So, it's not the question of how I feel, it is a question of how we must grow our party and deepen democracy and rescue this country.”

On his absence from governance during his leave, he said, “I did not miss anything because I have a very competent acting governor who was able to cope with the security challenges, issues of flooding and all the things that happened while I was away.”

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has congratulated the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke on his victory in the Osun State Governorship election.

In a statement, the governor said the people have chosen PDP's values of equity, unity and progress over retrogressive policies that have had them in dire straits for years.

According to him, "I congratulate the candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke, on his victory in the Osun 2022 governorship election.

"The people of Osun State have made their choices through the ballot, choosing the PDP and our ideals of equity, unity and progress over the retrogressive policies that have had them in dire straits these past years."

He continued: "We stand with the people of Osun in sending a clear message to Nigerians that we are prepared and ready to rescue them from the hardship and woes that they have been thrown into.

"We thank the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for sustaining the electoral reforms which started in the September 19, 2020 Edo State governorship election. These reforms have ensured a peaceful, fair and credible conduct of the election, which gave the people the freedom to elect their preferred candidate.

"As a party, we remain steadfast in our commitment to rescue Nigeria and are, by this victory, fired up to go into the 2023 general elections to win."
