‘I often meet the real leaders of Africa (Youth) searching for external transformational leadership. Essentially they are looking for themselves.’ – Brian Tamuka Kagoro A good number of us were peeved with the recent development of Zimbabwe’s 90 year old president Robert Mugabe, being elected as the Chair of the African Union. Several articles flooded the internet with people expressing utmost disappointment and anger; others declaring that Africa, as usual, had set itself up for failure considering its vision of a transformed Africa with forward looking and pragmatic leadership. Others labeled it as a ceremonial appointment taking into consideration that the election of the chair which rotates on a sub regional basis was to go to the southern Africa states. In the midst of all this however, I wish to challenge you young leaders. Change begins with you and not leaders in high seating offices. Whether you, I, eastern or western powers critic or welcome the said elections, we are responsible of what we do on a day to day basis. Be the change To illustrate this let me share an excerpt from the Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. A beggar had been sitting by the side of the road for over thirty years. One day a stranger walked by. “Spare some change?” mumbled the beggar, mechanically holding out his old baseball cap. “I have nothing to give you,” said the stranger. Then he asked: “what’s that you are sitting on?’ “Nothing,” replied the beggar. “Just an old box. I have been sitting on it for as long as I can remember.” “Ever looked inside?” asked the stranger. “No,” said the beggar. “What’s the point? There’s nothing in there.” “Have a look inside,” insisted the stranger. The beggar managed to pry open the lid. With astonishment, disbelief, and elation, he saw that the box was filled with gold. I am that stranger who has nothing to give you and who is telling you to look inside. Not inside any box, as in the parable, but somewhere even closer: inside yourself. From what you choose to do on a daily basis, be it socially, economically or politically, be the change you wish to see in Africa. Copied from youthhubafrica.org |
Whoever asked that question should see this video by Esther Perel and try to decipher what the answer is. m.youtube.com/watch?v=sa0RUmGTCYY |

How to make New Year’s resolutions that actually work out this time. It’s the time of year when optimism strikes anew and we think to ourselves: our New Year’s resolutions will totally work out this time. Never mind that we abandoned them by Valentine’s Day last year. And the year before. And, well, you know the drill. But what if this year really could be different? There’s a science to setting goals. The problem is that it often stays in the ivory tower or gets muddled with misinformation. We called up Kelly McGonigal (TED Talk: How to make stress your friend), a psychologist at Stanford University, and asked her about the best way to set and accomplish a goal, scientifically speaking. Below, she shares four research-backed tips to help you craft and carry out successful goals. Choose a goal that matters, not just an easy win. Our brains are wired to love rewards, so we often set simple goals that make it easy to check off boxes. Did you go to the gym today? Check. Did you write in your journal? Check. “It feels really good to set a goal,” says McGonigal. “People often set them just for the burst of optimism they get when they vow to make a change.” But if that’s all our New Year’s resolutions are about, no wonder we end up abandoning them so quickly. A meaningful goal — one that truly inspires you to change — requires going deeper. “Give yourself permission and time to think about what it is you want to experience in your life or what’s getting in the way,” says McGonigal. Think about what you want in the coming year, then ask yourself why you want that — three times in a row. For example, if you want to quit smoking, ask why do you want to quit? Then, if you want to quit for your health, ask why do you want good health? Then, if your answer is to be alive long enough to meet your grandchildren, ask why do you want to meet your grandchildren? “You get to something that just feels so obviously important to you,” says McGonigal. It really drives home why that goal matters, and that motivation can bolster you as you work toward the goal. Focus on the process, not the outcome. When we set goals, it’s easy to fixate on that magical ending when we’ve reached the goal and everything is better. But we can’t control outcomes, and we certainly can’t will them into existence (though this writer has tried, many times). We have to inch toward them, one choice at a time. “People often get lost thinking they have to change everything all at once,” says McGonigal. “But small changes can pave the way for bigger changes.” Ask yourself, what is the smallest thing I can do today that helps me reach my goal? For example, if you’re shy and you want to be more outgoing, you might accept someone’s invitation to lunch or say hi to someone you usually walk past in the hallway. From there, just follow the breadcrumbs — one small choice after another. “You can make very, very small changes that are consistent with your big goals without having to understand how you’re going to get to the endgame,” says McGonigal. If you make daily choices that are consistent with your goal over and over again, you will eventually reach it — though it may look nothing like what you expected. Frame your goals positively. How you describe your goal makes a big difference. Focusing on what you want to bring into your life — not what you want to avoid — will make you more likely to actually pursue it. “That’s basically just brain chemistry,” says McGonigal. “Any sort of avoidance is going to trigger inhibition systems, whereas positive goals are going to trigger approach and reward motivation.” Think about what you want to foster in yourself or what you want to do more often. That positivity can help motivate you when you find yourself slipping. “Saying ‘I don’t want to be fat anymore’ gives you no positive motivation to draw on when you just ate the second box of donuts,” says McGonigal. Be nice to yourself. It works. Prepare for failure (in a good way). Moments of failure are inevitable, but most of us abandon the goal entirely when minor failures and setbacks start piling up. We give up on getting fit when we miss the gym, or we forget about losing weight after a night of burgers and milkshakes. “In that moment when you fail, often the first instinct is to push the goal away,” says McGonigal. “It’s so uncomfortable to be in that place of self-doubt or self-criticism and guilt.” Your task is not to avoid failures, but to plan for them. Ask yourself, how am I likely to fail? For example, if you’re likely to choose unhealthy meals when you’re hungry, carry a light snack that can tide you over. Psychologists call this an if/then contingency plan, or “if this happens, then I’ll do that.” It’s a mental plan for how you’ll react to things that might trip you up. When detours and roadblocks come up, remind yourself why your goal matters to you. Those simple reminders about why it’s important can buoy your motivation and keep you headed in the right direction. Who knows, you might just make it past Valentine’s Day this year. - copied from ideas.ted.com. |

MissMeiya: And... what on earth does calling out stúpid people on the internet have to do with communication management? You better learn what those big words mean before throwing them around.Just exactly what I was saying, the way this sentence was presented could be annoying to the common man, but its fine with me, I know wht I'm saying no matter how clueless I might look. Peace!! |
As an undergraduate and potential entrepreneur, I was shocked at the plainness of this poster, I'm impressed and I see you making it very very big with this attitude, very few people will give that volume of information free of charge. To skeptics, I believe you have every right to be skeptical about anything, but with the trend of things in the world presently, whenever you are presented with any opportunity or chance, regardless of its status; true or false, seek to validate people's claim before you castigate their personalities or claims. And @missmeiya, I understand you have related with different people on nairaland and you have become so reactive and fast to "hit" people but as an entrepreneur that might not help you to go far as you desire because communications management is a very critical aspect to becoming a renowned, life-impacting and economy impacting entrepreneur. Look forward to learning more from this poster. |

realGURU: Pls i want make decision in life of either being medical doctor or a lecturer.are you setting your goals cos of the financial benefit or your passion for it Lecturing is not that attractive when it comes to salary especially on the lower level and lecturing too is tough, u have to keep writing journals, getting higher postgraduate degrees, attend conferences and seminars, set exam questions, lecture itself, invigilate, research and a host of other things. Else, you will become irrelevant in the sector. Choose wisely bro! |

Usually a projector has to be attached with a computer in order to project something, however this all is about to change. Say hello to this new projector by the name of Odin that doesn’t require a computer. The gadget runs on Android OS and is, in all essence, a computer cum projector itself. Oh and the gadget is so small that you can carry it in your pocket! The gadget is raising funds on Kickstarter and is capable of streaming from Netflix, Hulu and can even access Dropbox and Skydrive. Let’s just dive straight away into the specs of this super awesome gadget; the LED projector side of Odin can display a 25” image from one yard away whereas the manufacturers claim that it is capable of 250” image from a distance of 10 yards. As per the Kickstarter page; ‘Odin’s optical lens is so strong, you can see the projected screen with normal indoor lighting at up to 45’ screen size, which is bigger than most flat screen TVs.’ But all that is secondary as far as we are concerned. For us the fascination lies in the fact that it doesn’t require a source to project movies and pictures. The gadget comes with a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, 2GB worth of RAM, 16 GB of storage and is Wi-Fi enabled. Since it has an Android OS you can very well install apps as well. The HDMI port option is still here in case you want to connect it to your laptop. Odin is also capable of surfing the Internet thanks to Chrome, editing your documents and can pair up with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Think of it as your Smartphone with a whooping large display that you can project! To save one unit for yourself you’ll need to pledge an amount of $499 since once it starts rolling out it will cost $845! source: www.facebook.com/WonderfulEngineering |

EngrSirwhite: Plz this thread is for both professionals and fresh graduates who are contemplating on which career path to follow. Most of us were told dat obtaining project management professional certificate during our NYSC will give us an edge over our fellow contemporaries/counterparts during job hunting. Sincerely, it seems as though the reverse is the case here cos even after acquiring the certificate, finding a job is as hard as bringing the 234 Abducted Chibok gals back. I've not really seen the Significance of PMP certificate. What advantage and career prospect can PMP offer to fresh Graduates. Plz ur advice nd constructive criticism will be highly welcomed. Tanks for ur responsewhere did you get the certificate from and did you write the international exam ? |
