For centuries, the medical doctor has been one of the most respected members of society. Traditional healers of indigenous tribes were revered for their knowledge of the healing arts. In Nigeria, the doctor is called upon not only treat patients, but is also called upon for advice and guidance as well. This is one of the reasons why year in, and year out, Medicine has been one of the most sought after courses in UTME examinations. But what does it mean to be a medical doctor? The Joy of Being a Medical Doctor, I am a surgeon, an orthopeadic surgeon. Orthopaedic surgeons treat diseases and injuries to bones, ligaments and tendons. Yes, I love being a surgeon. Each day when I wake up and look in the mirror, I know that my goal is to help my patients, either directly or by teaching students and resident doctors – hopefully making them better doctors. Medicine satisfies my yearning for knowledge. Patients are often like mysteries in a detective story. They come with problems which the doctor has to decipher. Doctors collect clues in form of what the patient tells them (this is called history), physical examinations and appropriate diagnostic investigations. Using those clues, doctors strive to develop a management strategy which takes into consideration the patient's desires and our best knowledge of the evidence. The doctor patient interaction is special, very special indeed. When I introduce myself to a patient, I almost always sense the patient trusting me, giving me that encouragement that we are working together towards the common goal of getting them over their diseases. It is a very special feeling. You feel very fortunate that patients trust you with their information. I remembered the first time I watched a caesarian section. The surgeon brought the baby boy out of the uterus. I went with the nurse to examine the baby and check his weight and height, count his heart rate, and check his breathing. That day, I couldn't help but marveled at the mystery of creation. I also couldn't help but think how wonderful it would be to be a doctor who can take care of women at the moments of their worst fears and their greatest joy. Some years ago, I managed an eleven year old boy with club foot. The parents were very poor. It took them almost three months to raise the less than thirty thousand Naira needed for the final phase of the treatment. The boy had been walking with a limp all his life. When I took off the POP on his foot, and he saw how close to normal his foot was, he moved to me and held me tightly to himself, saying over and over again "Thank you, thank you….." When I looked at his mother, she had a huge smile on her face and tears were trickling down her face. Those were the kinds of memories that makes being a doctor worth the toils and the tears and the grit that goes into making you one. The challenges of patient care and the non-monetary rewards will continue to make medicine a wonderful field. Yes, many doctors are not making a lot of money, but they are making enough for themselves and their families to be comfortable. Most derive their greatest compensation from the personal satisfaction of caring for all those who came to see them. Sometimes, I wake up wondering why I'm a medical doctor, knowing I could be whatever I had wanted to be. However, with the same line of thought comes the realization that there's nothing else I'd rather be. Do You Have What It Takes to Become a Medical Doctor? Becoming a doctor takes time. After secondary education, you will spend six years in the medical school, one year as an intern and another year as a Youth Corper. That's eight years from starting university to practicing medicine. If you decide to become a specialist, then you are looking at another 4-9 years of residency training in a teaching hospital. This means that to become a specialist doctor, you need between 12 and 17 years of training, counting from your first year in the university. It takes a certain amount of intelligence to become a medical doctor. However, organization and good study habits can make the difference between a mediocre student who gets through medical school and a brilliant student who fails to make it. There are three cornerstones of a successful (this success is not defined by money!) career in medicine: A love for learning in general. A true intellectual curiosity about medicine in particular. A strong desire to help others. Being smart and doing well in the sciences are obviously important components of being a successful physician. But these are not the only requirement, you must also be able to relate well with people. As a physician you have an opportunity to help others. Wanting to help others and enjoying helping others are necessary attributes of a good physician. This is something that cannot be taught. In medicine, you have many choices. In what other career can you choose between delivering babies (Obstetricians), taking care of children (Paediatricians), treating women (Gynaecologists), handling emergencies (Traumatologists), removing a hernia or appendix (Surgeons), helping those with behavioural problems (Psychiatrists), or preventing diseases (Community Medicine)? Better yet, as a specialist, you can teach others your medical specialty, while still practicing your profession. Alternately, you can do research in whatever specialty you choose, with the potential to make a real breakthrough in preventing or treating illness. There is even a Nobel Prize for Medicine. You can become the Wole Soyinka of Medicine! In addition, being a physician is honourable and is held in high esteem. It allows you to live just about anywhere, and provides job security. However, all of this comes at a price. The many years of preparation, the discipline, the awesome responsibility and the long call duty hours can take their toll. Medicine is a unique field and it demands a unique person. What Subjects Should You Take in Your Senior Secondary School to Qualify for Admission to Read Medicine? According to the MDCN Website (the Red Book), the following secondary school subjects are required for medical education in Nigeria: 1. Biology 2. Physics 3. Chemistry 4. Mathematics 5. English . Prospective medical students must pass the West African School Certificate or the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination or any equivalent examination, Such as National Examination Council (NECO), with at least Credit level passes in the above five subjects. They must then either: 1. Pass the JAME Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination) for admission into the University preliminary (premedical) year or 2. Secure exemption from the JAME and the University Preliminary year by passing the Advanced Level General Certificate (GCE'A' Level). Higher School Certificate (HSC) or its equivalent examination in: Biology: Chemistry and Physics. Subject to the co-ordinating regulations of the JAME, it shall be the right of the Medical School to select candidates for final admission to their institutions from among eligible candidates who possess these minimum requirements. You need to score a high mark in your UTME examination. In theory, you are advised to score at least 200 in UTME examinations to be considered for admission into most universities, in practice, to be considered for medicine, you may need to score 250 and above. After that, you will need to pass the Post UTME Screening Examinations of the University of your choice very well too. What are Your Choice of Universities? Depending on their ownerships, Nigerian Universities can be divided into three: Federal Universities, State Owned Universities, and Private Universities. According to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), there are 32 medical schools in Nigeria (MDCN is a federal Government parastatal which regulates the practice of Medicine, Dentistry and Alternative Medicine in Nigeria). Twenty five are fully accredited to train medical students while 7 has partial accreditation. |

Presidential spokesman Shehu Garba yesterday released a statement saying President Muhammadu Buhari has N30m in his account and also some landed properties. This didn't go down well with some sections in the country. How would Buhari have "just" N30m in his account? With the sketchy description of the properties Shehu Garba gave, one can argue the president is worth less than N100m. The rumors making the round currently are that Shehu's statement doesn't reflect the true worth of the president. Here's why: 1. Yar'Adua when he declared his assets was worth close to N900m, Jonathan arguably was worth N300m on assuming office as president. President Buhari can't be worth more than N100m according to details released. Some don't believe a president can be worth much much less. 2. Yar'Adua had made documents of his asset declaration public. Buhari made a statement - through his spokesman. One can therefore say Buhari is yet to make his asset public, contrary to his campaign promise. 3. Wife of the president, Aishat Buhari, after the elections was spotted wearing a watch which reports say is worth close to N10m. Her husband has only N30m in the bank. 4. The the tuition fees for Buhari's many Daughters who study at Prestigious Universities abroad is worth over £ 30,000. It'll be hard to believe their father has N30m in his bank account. In the spirit of democracy, capitalism, and reducing
the cost of government
I believe a fully privatized educational system will be
best, especially in a country like Nigeria in which the
government is both poor and corrupt, and therefore
incapable of funding or managing public schools
effectively. Critics of privatization have pointed out
that when government institutions are privatized,
they end up being (1) controlled by the rich friends of
the government and (2) unaffordable to the common
man.
If Nigerian public schools are all privatized, they
could end up being controlled by people who have no
interest in education and just happen to be rich, well
connected, and willing to bribe. If all schools in
Nigeria are private, we could end up with a country in
which only rich can afford education. And that won't
be ok because we all know what happens when the
masses are not educated: you have a high crime rate,
religious crises, etc.
However, our public schools are in a deplorable
state. A few public schools are doing relatively well,
but they are not really public schools anymore,
because they charge all sorts of fees. We might as
well privatize them too. We could try to convince the
government to pump more tax-money into the worst
public schools, but that would be like pouring more
water into a basket. I believe the government should
be more involved in setting educational standards,
making sure WAEC, NECO, and JAMB exams are free
of cheating, and properly marked, etc. (instead of
running schools).
However, instead of simply selling public schools to
the highest bidder, I believe every public school
should be turned into a limited liability
company, and 1 share of that company should be
given (not sold) to every adult resident of the LGA
the school resides in, and every current
employee of the school.
The current principal of each school should be made
the CEO, and the head teachers and current PTA
officials made directors of each school. This will turn
public schools into for-profit organizations that have
a strong incentive to keep costs low, improve
educational standards and find ways to make more
money with the schools' land and resources. Public
schools will no longer be an unproductive drain on
our national resources.
This approach will put the schools in the hands of
communities instead of just the governors' crony
capitalist friends. The sense of ownership the
community feels about the schools, as a result of
their actual ownership, will encourage every
individuals to help their schools in various ways, and
to fight anyone that tries to damage the schools. If
the officials the schools don't perform, they will be
voted out in shareholder meetings.
Since the shares will be owned by both rich people
and poor people in the community, the school is
likely to pursue policies that make it possible for
children of the poor to afford the privatized schools,
such as academic scholarships and multiple tiers of
service so rich students subsidize poor students. At
the same time, they will avoid policies that can make
the school go bankrupt (otherwise, the poor
shareholders will get no dividends!)
There will be a healthy balance of empathy, social
values, pragmatism, and capitalistic creativity and
efficiency. It shouldn't be hard to try it out with a
single public school to see how it turns out. We
should start with schools that are currently in a very
bad state, such as this one, and this one.
What do you think about school privatization in
general, and this approach specifically? What are
some of the challenges you envisage? Do you have
any suggestions about how to improve this, or
reasons why it may work or not work?

Their Shares To The Masses |
Some may argue this point; but FL Studio (formerly
called 'Fruity Loops') is Nigeria's most popular beat-
making software. Just take a quick poll of producers
from Lagos to Abuja, from Port Harcourt to Kaduna.
FL Studio has become a staple item in Naija studios.
Some producers in Nigeria use Propellerhead's
Reason while others use DAWs like Cubase, Logic Pro
and Sonar to synthesize their instrumentals but these
are arguably in the minority. Here is an example of a
Naija song made with FL Studio.
Whether Image Line (the company that makes the
software) are actually making money from Nigeria is
another matter. You can pick up a copy of FL Studio
10 for about 200NGN (slightly more than $1) on the
streets. Below are a few reasons why it may be so
popular among Nigerian producers:
1. The bandwagon effect
There is no doubt that what a producer you know
uses can affect what you will use. Very early
producers in Nigeria from the early 2000s started
using Fruity Loops (as it was called then), and
everyone started using it too. This is probably the
most important but not the only reason why it is so
popular.
2. The hip hop factor
Most contemporary Nigerian songs have their roots
in Hip hop, Dancehall and Afrobeat. FL Studio has
been a strong influence for Hip hop producers from
the days of Lex Luger and Soulja Boy. Do the math,
more Hip hop influence means more FL Studio.
3. Ease of Use
This point is actually arguable. All production
software can be easy or difficult to use, it just
depends on the approach to learning it and the level
of computer - savviness of the user. You cannot
dispute the fact that to make a simple Hip hop beat,
FL Studio can make a complete beginner feel like a
pro! When you start getting into complicated areas
like automation, well, let's just say it won't be so easy
anymore...
4. Loop-based sequencing
Loop-based sequencing means you can just make a
pattern and then make it play over and over again
while you add other elements. This is as opposed to
the linear sequencing that is done on DAWs (Digital
Audio Workstations) which can be cumbersome and
take quite some time to layer the beats. FL Studio
(yeah you guessed right) uses loop-based sequencing
and this is an attraction for amateur producers.
5. Plugins, plugins, plugins....
FL Studio is a natural host for VST, Direct X and other
types of plugins. This ensures that virtually any plugin
can be hooked into FL Studio and its benefits
enjoyed. Propellerhead's Reason has a proprietary
file type and does not support VST plugins. This is a
major battle won for FL Studio as there are millions
of free plugins out there.
So...there you have it. FL Studio has come to stay in
Nigeria. Image Line is will make a lot of money if we
can have original copies of the software sold here in
Nigeria. And for those who look down on FL and say
it's inferior to others, just listen to any song
produced by the living Naija legend Sarz. You will
change your mind.
Comments are welcome and solicited. Thanks

An Isolo Magistrate's Court in Lagos has remanded in prison custody a 26-year-old man, Cheka Samuel, for allegedly stealing musical instruments belonging to a church. Presiding Magistrate, Mrs Joy Ugbomoiko, after granting the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum, ordered that he be remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, pending when he will perfect his bail. However, when the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty. During interrogation at Ajao Estate Police Division, the accused allegedly revealed that he had no intention to steal the instruments, but was compelled to do so because he did not find any money in the offering box .
