You don’t expect him to create chances for himself all the time and score goals, note that the previous season he was even getting balls from halfway line to counter, now he’s not even getting any cause the team has decided not to play forward often but sideways and backwards

Nairaland / General / ICPC To Investigate Hidden COVID19 Palliatives Found In Different States by JOHNAHGU: 11:19am On Oct 27, 2020
COVID-19 palliatives hidden in different states later found by Nigerians will now be investigated by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The commission says it will be investigating the rationale behind the storage of palliative materials in warehouses across the country which were supposed to be distributed to poor and vulnerable Nigerians.

In a statement released today October 27, the ICPC said that in view of the recent looting spree witnessed in some warehouses where the palliatives were hoarded, the commission will investigate the sources of goods looted from palliatives warehouses, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and private houses to unravel whether or not the properties looted were personally acquired, the government procured, CACOVID donated, or are empowerment materials which are part of the constituency projects initiative of the Federal Government.

The statement adds that the commission will also scale up the monitoring of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) charged with the acquisition and distribution of COVID-19 palliative relief materials and make public its findings in due course.

Celebrities / “dead Protesters Are NOT To Blame For Dying”- Simi by JOHNAHGU: 10:22am On Oct 27, 2020
Nigerian Singer, Simi slammed people who are blaming protesters for trying to fight for their rights.
In a series of tweets, Simi made it known that in democracy, people have the right to protest and demand for their safety.

She said people who blame the protesters for getting shot at are being ignorant.

She wrote;

“In a democracy, PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO PROTEST AND DEMAND FOR THEIR SAFETY!!! So you people that keep blaming the VICTIMS of injustice for the government’s ineptness and the country being so upside down are being ignorant.
Stop it!!! We do need to strategize and continue to find a way to move forward, but nobody will ever be wrong for asking (PEACEFULLY) for a right to live. First world countries manage it. We should be able to. We’re not animals.

The people that died are NOT to blame for dying. What are you saying Don’t be silly!!”

This statement is coming after some people blame the #EndSars Protesters for being shot at by armed forces.

Sports / How Guardiola Risks Being Left Behind By Klopp, Mourinho And Even Arteta by JOHNAHGU: 10:11am On Oct 27, 2020
Man City are struggling to adapt to the dominant counterattacking style in this season’s Premier League, with their Catalan coach now needing to adapt

As half-time approached on Saturday with West Ham leading Manchester City 1-0 and enjoying a spell of possession, a seemingly innocuous piece of action – or rather, inaction – summed up the problem with Pep Guardiola’s side this season.

Ilkay Gundogan pinched the ball off Michail Antonio midway into the City half and began striding forward with purpose.

The West Ham midfield was caught ahead of the ball, and with Sergio Aguero, Riyad Mahrez, and Raheem Sterling all beginning their runs, the counterattack looked on.

Gungodan dribbled forward, and then stopped. He turned, waited, turned again, and – with nothing on – played a simple sideways pass to Mahrez.

In total Gundogan held the ball for 7.61 seconds and took nine touches. Nobody had made an incisive run, nobody had moved between the lines, and, as can be seen below, by the time he laid it off West Ham had seven players behind the ball:

According to WyScout data, over the last four matches in all competitions City have attempted a grand total of three counterattacks from within their own half.

That includes just one against Leeds United, an opponent that consistently left huge gaps to exploit, and zero against an expansive Arsenal. In the West Ham and Porto matches, City’s counters occurred within the last two minutes of the game.

Unsurprisingly, Guardiola’s side are yet to score a counterattacking goal this season, per Opta, and managed just four in total in 2019-20 – six fewer than Liverpool.

But the most telling statistic of all is their “progressive passes”, a WyScout metric that records passes that move the ball considerably forward (between at least 10 metres and 30 metres, depending on which area of the field the pass was made from).

Last season, City topped the charts in this category with 85.57 per 90 minutes. So far in 2020-21, they sit 10th in the Premier League with 66.79 per 90 minutes.

This statistic does not precisely measure counterattacks; the vast majority of Man City’s progressive passes are ‘line-splitters’ played when up against a deep defensive shell.

But the magnitude of the drop-off indicates a significant loss of verticality and forward momentum, and the sight test suggests this is most problematic when it comes to capitalising on counterattacking situations.

Guardiola has never been big on counters. But as City continue to falter, and following a dramatic shift in the tactical landscape of the Premier League, perhaps it is time he coaches his players on how to break at speed like the managers at Liverpool, Tottenham, and even Arsenal – where his protégé Mikel Arteta notably departs from his mentor’s teaching.

From Barcelona to Man City, Guardiola has rarely encouraged counterattacks, instead instructing his players to reform into their calculated shape when they get the ball.

The idea is that counters are inherently dangerous because they stretch the play and are essentially unstructured, whereas falling into formation creates the positional configuration that maximises chance creation.

Essentially, he trusts his own planning – little triangles all over the pitch and an even spread of players vertically and horizontally – more than the potential disorder of a quick break.

The problem with counters, from Pep’s perspective, is that they lead to counter-counters, pulling bodies up and down the pitch. For a man obsessed with control, that is simply not an option.

But the Premier League is changing, and more importantly, the Premier League’s perception of Manchester City is changing.

Guardiola’s tactical system works primarily through fear. By suffocating the opposition with possession and pressing, their attacking threat becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as teams drop deeper and deeper, accepting their fate and aiming for damage limitation; penned in and unable to counter.

But the spell was lifted early last season when Norwich City, and then Wolves, exposed flaws in the City defence and poked holes through central midfield.

By now everyone knows Guardiola’s side are vulnerable, which means there is no longer any fear; no longer hesitation and retreat.

As their opponents hold more of the ball and throw more bodies forward, there is now space for City to counter-counter where there was not before. Their games are too even – or at least loaded with the potential for an upset – for low-tempo possession dominance and constant ball recycling.

City need to play assertively and need to break when the chances come, because to reform into shape as they did in the 45th minute at the London Stadium makes little sense if there is no longer the guarantee they will be camped in that half for the next 10 minutes.

To put it another way, over more than a decade at the top Guardiola has created a strangling tactical philosophy that allows him to gain complete territorial control of a match, from which position his sides can enact carefully structured plays in the final third.

That guarantee of control has gone, and has emboldened opponents to charge at them head first.

City need to adapt by adding fine-tuned counterattacks; actions which embrace the end-to-end moments of chaos that often break out in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are brilliant at these, but Arteta’s model is perhaps more relevant to Guardiola. The Arsenal manager creates counterattacking situations artificially, by telling his players to attempt high-risk passes inside their own penalty area.

This lures the opposition forward to create space for sudden vertical progressions and charges towards goal.

City could certainly start to do this via Kevin De Bruyne – invariably the architect of their rare counters, dropping between the lines and dribbling straight up the field – and Bernardo Silva, who enjoyed a deeper role against Arsenal last weekend.

Bernardo gave City greater purpose in possession, turning some of those U-shape passes across the defence into line-splitters from deep. The Portugal international should be trusted to play more assertively, triggering counter-counter situations when an attack from City’s opponents breaks down.

Then again, even if Guardiola did decide to make such a dramatic change, he does not necessarily have the personnel to do it.

It is notable that Tottenham and Liverpool – the two best counterattackers among the Premier League’s elite sides – have strikers capable of dropping deep to become playmakers. Aguero cannot imitate Roberto Firmino or Harry Kane.

Nevertheless, Guardiola needs to find a way to structure City’s attacks with greater incision and urgency. Their opponents will continue to surge forward on the counter, fearlessly confronting a midfield that lacks intensity in the press, and when they do City ought to be ready to hit straight back.

Otherwise, they will continue to look flat, as they did against West Ham as Gundogan stopped and turned and slowed things down.

When it happened on Saturday, and the lack of options for Gundogan saw the ball go all the way back to Kyle Walker, BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher noted that Man City “look a little bit befuddled”.

On the contrary, they were not in the least bit confused, but rather were following Guardiola’s instructions to the letter.

It is just that control – calm, orderly domination – does not quite cut it anymore.

Sports / Aubameyang Has Declined Since Signing New Arsenal Contract – Bent by JOHNAHGU: 9:59am On Oct 27, 2020
The Gabon international is struggling to find the back of the net in the Premier League this season

Former Premier League star Darren Bent said Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has not been at his best since he signed a new three-year contract with the Gunners.

Aubameyang is yet to score a Premier League goal after committing his future to the Emirates Stadium outfit last month in a deal that earns him around £250,000 per week at the club.

On Sunday, the 2015 African Footballer of the Year played from start to finish in Arsenal’s 1-0 home loss to Leicester City but he failed to threaten goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with no shot on target.

His only league goal so far this campaign came against Fulham on the opening day, and Bent thinks Aubameyang’s form has dropped and he is not having the best time in Mikel Arteta’s team.

“There has been a drop-off,” Bent said on Talk Sport.

“You look at his form in the semi-final and the final of the FA Cup last season, the Community Shield and his performance against Fulham – he was arguably one of the best strikers in the Premier League, probably the best.

“But since he signed that new contract, it might be a coincidence, but he’s looked a shadow of himself.

“He’s missed big opportunities in games, he’s not working with the same intensity, he doesn’t look like he’s enjoying it as much.

“Listen, confidence is massive in a striker. It is with any player, but particularly with a centre-forward, when you’re used to scoring as many goals as he is and then you suddenly stop scoring, it can be a little bit of a concern.

“But I think it’s even the work rate as well.

“You remember, he was putting shifts up and down, he was all over the place, but he’s been nowhere near that level recently.”

Aubameyang came off the bench to secure Arsenal’s 2-1 comeback win over Rapid Wien in their Uefa Europa League opener last Thursday.

He will be expected to play a part when the Gunners host Dundalk for their next European fixture on Thursday before they battle Manchester United in the Premier League on November 1.

Sports / Real Madrid Midfielder Isco Hits Out At Manager Zinedine Zidane For Ostracizing by JOHNAHGU: 6:00pm On Oct 26, 2020
Real Madrid and Spain playmaker, Isco has attacked his club boss, Zinedine Zidane claiming that he is being ostracised by the Frenchman.

Isco, 28, has not played in any of Los Blancos’ last two outings, the 3-1 Clasico victory over Barcelona on Saturday and the stunning 3-2 Champions League loss to Shakhtar Donetsk three days earlier.

This season he has made just four appearances, a situation he isn’t pleased about.

“If he has to take me off, he takes me off in the 50th or 60th minute of the game. Sometimes even at half-time,” Isco complained on Movistar+’s ‘El Partidazo’ program.

“If he has to put me on, he’ll do it in the 80th minute.”

In his seven years at Real Madrid, Isco has not played full back-to-back league matches for three years. In that time, he has played the full duration of only six fixtures in La Liga.

“The win was a result of the defensive work of the group,” Sergio Ramos pointed out after the weekend’s win at Camp Nou. “We have run, we have suffered, and there is the result.

“It is the line that we must reach and maintain throughout the season. In the end, in football there are things that cannot be negotiated such as attitude and intensity, and the team has put in the maximum from the beginning to the end.”

Sports / ‘I Don’t Want To Leave Barcelona Like This’ – Umtiti Hoping To Turn Things Arou by JOHNAHGU: 9:07am On Oct 26, 2020
The French defender admits there were talks of a Camp Nou exit over the summer with a reunion at his former club on the cards

Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti has revealed he did consider leaving the club in recent months but is determined to secure a departure on better terms.

After failing to win a trophy last season, it was a summer of upheaval at Camp Nou with Ronald Koeman coming in as coach and Lionel Messi sensationally requesting to leave.

While Messi ultimately stayed put, Umtiti himself contemplated an exit with his former club Lyon circling.

The 26-year-old spent 14 years at Lyon before moving to Barcelona in 2016 and has found the past few seasons in Spain particularly hard as he’s battled injuries and poor form.

Yet to feature for Koeman’s side this season, Umtiti revealed his brief temptation to leave the club over the summer, only to realise his desire to stay.

“Everything was possible during the transfer window. Lyon is my club and my city. They gave me the opportunity to be seen,” Umtiti told Canal +.

“There were discussions, but it was quick, nothing concrete. I had to be able to speak with a club. I’ll be honest: Barcelona is Barcelona. I don’t want to leave Barcelona and even less like that.

“The last two years have been the most complicated of my career. Sometimes I got really sick of it. I relapsed each time, and with different injuries because I was trying to compensate. It wasn’t a knee problem, it was that I had a total imbalance. I had to start over.

“I stopped eating meat, fish and milk. I feel better, I sleep better. I have never felt so good physically. My body has also changed. I have lost three kilos. I have recovered. I have never worked so hard. And I’m happy about it.”

On Messi’s own request to leave Barcelona, Umtiti added: “It has been an eventful summer. For me and the club. It made me feel weird to read this: Leo wanted to leave. He has his reasons. But to imagine Barca without Messi is impossible.”

Umtiti has formed a strong connection with French team-mates Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele at Camp Nou, with the trio able to find the lighter side of the criticism they have all been subject to at times.

“With Antoine and Ousmane, we are often together. We have all lived through complicated times,” Umtiti said.

“Everyone puts knives behind our backs and wants to kill us. But, between us, we try to laugh to help make us smile again.”

Sports / Osimhen Plots Attack On Atalanta by JOHNAHGU: 4:26pm On Oct 16, 2020
Determined to open his Serie A goal accounts this weekend, Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen has been studying some Atalanta match footages, Tuttomecartosports can exclusively report.

Napoli dropped three points against champions Juventus after the Naples side failed to travel to Turin for the encounter over Covid-19 fears. But coach Genaro Gattuso has encouraged Osimhen to study their Saturday’s opponents closely and learn one or two things that could aid his goal-scoring on Saturday.
The former Lille forward impressed everyone in his first few weeks in Naples, scoring double hat-tricks in friendly games, but is yet to find the net in the Serie A after three matches.Gazzettadellosport reported that the former Royal Charleroi striker missed Nigeria two friendly matches, and stayed back in Castel Volturno Bubble to study how the Serie A leaders initiate the attack, and how best he can press and recover high balls to make Napoli attack more dangerous.Napoli landed the highly rated Nigeria forward from Lille in a reported club-record deal said to be worth an initial €50million.

The 21-year-old attacker spent just a single season in France but showed enough to seal a big move to Serie A, with Napoli understood to have given him a five-year contract. It remains to be seen if Osimhen would have learned enough to help Napoli triumph over an in-form Atalanta that is yet to drop a point from nine and most importantly open his Serie A goal account.
Crime / SARS Officers Will Not Be Allowed To Join SWAT – IGP, Mohammed Adamu Reveals by JOHNAHGU: 3:44pm On Oct 14, 2020
Following the dissolution of The Special Anti-Robbery Squad and creation of the Special Weapons and Tactics ( SWAT), the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu has disclosed that SARS operatives won’t be allowed to join the new body, SWAT.
The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) Unit was dissolved by the IGP following complaints and massive protests by Nigerians.

According to a Police memo, SARS former officers are barred from joining the newly-created Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit of the Nigeria Police Force.

One of the criteria for the selection of SWAT officers stipulates that they must not have worked for SARS, and officers to be recruited must also have at least seven years policing service experience, and must be passed physically fit to withstand training and operation.

They will also undergo medical and psychological fitness to certify them fit medically, emotionally, and psychologically.

Another criteria for selection is that prospective SWAT officers must not have pending disciplinary issues, or any serious previous record of professional misconduct touching on intemperate behaviour, incivility to members of the public, corrupt practices, and misuse of firearms.

For operational service, recruited officers must be between the ages of 25 and 40 years, and 35 and 45 years for command elements.

Sports / Eberechi Eze Qualifies With England by JOHNAHGU: 3:21pm On Oct 14, 2020
Though he is still very much on the radar of Nigerian football officials, Eberechi Eze featured as a 63rd-minute substitute on Tuesday night as England Under-21s secured their Euro 2021 place with a win over Turkey.

The Young Lions were gifted an early lead through Huseyin Turkmen’s own goal and looked set to confirm their victory only for Eddie Nketiah to miss from the penalty spot.

But Nketiah made up for the error when he bagged three minutes later, ensuring Ibrahim Dervisoglu’s late goal was merely a consolation.
Eze took to the field in place of Joshua Dasilva – who scored in the recent game with Andorra – and remained part of the action until the final whistle.

Eze has continually been referred to as a Super Eagles’ prospect but the former QPR midfielder has literally been playing hard to get.

Having yet made his bow with the Three Lions, Eze remains eligible to don Nigeria’s Green and White colours.

Our popular Mavin Records CEO and music producer, Don Jazzy, has reacted to the formation of a new unit to replace the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.

A while ago, the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu had announced the formation of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team to “fill the gaps arising from the dissolution of SARS.

The IGP also ordered all operatives of the disbanded SARS to report in Abuja for debriefing and medical examination.

However, reacting to the development, Don Jazzy in a post via his Twitter account, insisted that the new unit SWAT should be ended before the Government starts listing unnecessary expenses used to set up the unit.

“They should just end this SWAT now before it starts o.
“’Nobi’ tomorrow now they will say they spent money to do logo, spend money to do uniforms.

“Don’t spend any money o, end it now before it matures,”
