Programming / Re: Why Doesn't Anyone In Nigeria Code In A Lisp by johnbendie(m): 12:43pm On Dec 13, 2013
Really nice comments from programmers here about why one language may be preferred to the other and situations to which it may apply. It was Alan Perlis who was credited with saying " A language that doesn't affect the way you think about programming, is not worth knowing." There's more at http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Alan_Perlis. And the way to be certain about this is to read the rationale for whatever language it is that you are using. What problem is it trying to solve and what are some of the thinking that influenced it's desgin. And none of this should replace sound computer science foundation like knowing what turing machines and recursion are and there relationships with set theory or collections.

Giving the above mindset of rationales I can say I'm in clojure because of http://clojure.org/rationale. Rich data structures fostered on immutability. Strong concurrency semantics and primitives. Sequence abstraction. Polymorphism over inheritance. Under rated Object Orientation. Simplicity over complexity inter alia.
Programming / Re: Are There Expert Clojure Developers In Nigeria by johnbendie(m): 11:11am On Dec 13, 2013
@codenature I have been playing with clojure for 2 years now full time. Currently I work with the new pedestal platform. Previously it was ring-based frameworks. I also do clojurescript for client side development which is mostly suited to single page style web applications. I use mostly emacs for development on a day to day basis. I have been looking for people with similar interests. I typed in google the words "Nigerian clojure programmers" which landed me here. I'm glad to know there are people trying to program in a sane way separating state from identity. I once went to Seamfix for an interview and was surprised to learn my interviewer hadn't heard of clojure. I was embarassed. Write me if you'll like us to chitty chat a bit on clojure, the most interesting language on the planet. johnbendie [at] gmail [dot] com.
Programming / Re: Can A Nigeria Programmer Afford A Range Rover Sport? by johnbendie(m): 4:36pm On Oct 28, 2013
Software programming or the computer science industry is like any other industry. There are four classes of people operating in it like any other industry by Rich Dad's standard. Which do you belong to. Like any other industry you can make just about the kind of money others make from a particular position. As an exceptional employee you can make a reasonable amount of money. As an entrepreneur you can make poor profits. Take a position according to your level of risk. Are your eyes trained to see opportunities? If not get some training in that area.

In my personal observation the opportunity is there for an entrepreneur. You see your efforts as an enterprise. Are you coding for the mass market or for businesses.
Facebook is a B2C application. They understand that and focus on delivering effective services that keeps these customers on their platfrom. They understand the business model.
SAP is a B2B focused enterprise. They understand that and remain focused.

Look critically at what opportunities present themselves and I can assure you they abound. I'm sure over these 2 years the views of the OP must have changed because of a lot of disruptive events that has been taking place in the country. There is no doubt now whether we can afford a Range or even a Bentley given enough time and as the market for IT products grows. We are living in exciting times.

Programming / Re: OPEN SOURCE Has Been Evil Too! by johnbendie(m): 1:49am On Feb 21, 2013
Still in defence of not only Open Source Software but also Open Source Knowledge:

Programming / Re: OPEN SOURCE Has Been Evil Too! by johnbendie(m): 3:50pm On Feb 04, 2013
OP: you've really not made any concrete argument for your case. I think you need to clarify between software given for free and open source software. It is a known fact that open-source software can actually be charged for. You also need to understand the role that software licenses play in this case. One of the motivating factors of opensource initiative was to facilitate contribution from developers living across different geographies in order to build robust and secure software. This has facilitated the writing of the linux OS(operating system), to be precise the GNU/Linux OS, which is a mystery to the world: how can an OS that is open source be so secure. More secure than it's closed source counterparts. This has led to replication of this successful open source model by different visionary initiators from different aspect of the ecosystem.

To really appreciate this, you need to read up on the story of Richard Stallman, the chair of the FSF(Free Software Foundation) the difficulty he met at the time and why he worked towards that initiative. He cannot over-stress that free software represents freedom as in free speech and not as in free beer. Imagine that you bought your car and were told that you cannot touch the engine or use another brand of tires or don't even change the fabric when they are old. It behooves me how you can come out so confidently to speak less knowledgeably about the motives of the Free and Open Source Initiatives.

The point to be made from your case is one of concern. Yes there are issues as such as you have raised. They need to be considered and refined to suit your purpose. You have choices, one of which is to choose not to use free or open source software. When you do choose there is a law to abide by to that that effect.
Also your claims relating to warez activites where others work are being given away for free has nothing to do with Open Source Software. Take a break and co-ordinate your thoughts. That co-ordination may come with a bit of effort especially when you begin getting exposed to what IT is all about. I'm sure you'll overcome.

fallguy: i hope you guys are getting my drift.
I love libre software - free compilers, free editors , free bit torrent client etc,
but thats for me a developer,
the altruisic spirit of libre software is noble.
the moral objective of empowering the user is applaudable
but the point is libre software aftermaths like carbon and noise emission from
a lister generator cannot not have economic negative consequences which
i care to outline here.
some of your retorts occur because of your unwillingness to ascribe sour truth
to a cause that has been so praised.
ha.
suck the sour grapes sirs. its good for you all.
clear your minds with some alkaline juice..

Personally, I care little about how much you love free software. I value pragmatism more. How useful would the world have been without free software. You have admitted that you probably would have been of very little use to society when it comes to computers if not for free and open source software. That is what your gaze should focus on not on the little crumbs that would have remained on the table.

Look on those that have thought you the little that you know, and figure out how they are getting it right. And I assure you they are. If you prefer closed source mentors, they abound and are making a lot of money and GOOD and not EVIL like the title to your post has portrayed.

And you must also avoid the habit of portraying yourself around as someone with a Boko Harram mentality which sees western education as an EVIL.
Programming / Re: Can Your Programming Language Do This? by johnbendie(m): 4:49am On Feb 02, 2013
OP please don't start getting into the illusion that you are up to something big here. These problems are well known and understood in CS especially by the Americans. Immutability could be a way of describing the solution to your problem. To properly understand your problem write up a proper use case of your Variable class in code and share it here. Also you need to understand the fundamental difference between language primitives, Data Types, Data Structures. Your Variable class is no longer a primitive. you are trying to build a data structure which if you do successfully could be a source of revenue to you. And most data structures are built from manipulating array primitives which is not done in your class. I suppose your stack replaces that. You need to study up on Data Structure and Algorithms and move on to consider the algorithmic complexity of your solution.
Also check my favorite language, Clojure on their take on this http://clojure.org/state.
Clojure has also facilitated the writing of the datomic in-memory db system. Which can help you keep snapshots of what has happened in a clean idiomatic way written by a master. Rich Hickey

Programming / Re: OPEN SOURCE Has Been Evil Too! by johnbendie(m): 4:05am On Feb 02, 2013
On further thought. I felt I should address the concerns of the OP in my own little experience:

1.) it made software available for nothing.
people think software shouldnt be paid for ,its so hard
for individual developers to compete with free-

People can make money from customizing open source software. And even from proprietary applications. In Nigeria, young developers like you build sim registration software and are making tens of millions if not hundreds. Is that open source?

2.) software developers have gained the scorn of other professionals who can't appreciate
what it takes to create simple software because
freer more complete version abound on the internet.

sources please?

3.) open source has festered an entitlement mentallity.
software is the only product people expect to be
created and given away for FREE.
after air no product is free CLEAN AIR isnt free only
bad polluted air.

again, I highlighted how money can be made there. Nevertheless, sources for your claim is still needed.
And I'll suggest a good research into the business model surrounding open source and how companies have sold their
open source code for millions

4.) open source has cost more jobs than outsourcing.
because you can't compete with free.
5.) open source has cost more lost revenue for companies.
because they have to sell for almost-free to compete
banking on mass sales to rake in revenue.
6.) A car manufacture can charge 6 figures for 1 car,
a house can sell for 7 figures
a lawyer can bill clients at $1,000 an hour
no software developer can bill so and stay in business.
a surgery can cost 6 figures and people expect
it to be expensive
but software costing above 100 dollars (3 figures)
and many hours or months of work
gets people looking at the seller like he's a thief!!
- thanks open source!!.

Don't be confused by competition coming from big software shops like microsoft, oracle, SAP. Open source is not your problem, look elsewhere!. Don't write solutions to problems that have been solved. Look for problems that need solving. You have to train your eyes to see them and read voraciously. Trust me that's your path to salvation in this business. And problems abound yet to be solved in your country too numerous to mention. Have you got the skills is the real question here. Health care, ministries, enterprise solutions, brother wake up from your slumber!

7.) free software shot itself in the foot -
its not really about money but perception.
By giving away so much value for $0 it has only
accumulated contempt from users - much like a woman
accumulates contempt for being an easy lay -
law , accounting, medicine big money professions
on the hand have accumulated respect and prestige
inspite of their atrocious fees.
thank you open source.

how much did you pay for your operating system. I'll like you to donate $10,000 to your programming platform of choice. Do that I have a whole lot of list of things yo need to shed $$$ for. Hurry!

With a degree in computer science -
and your ability to code - you're regarded as an artisan.
people ask and wonder "will you still be programming/designing websites at age X?"
people dont ask will you still b practicing law, medicine, accounting at age X?
this shows how that programming is a field to get away from!
- its unprestigious and menial.
a situation worsened by free software.

this is actually the most interesting disillusioned question. It might be interesting to note that CS is one of the best fields to be working in while you're aged. Just sit, think, type, publish, && make money, that is if you're smart to figure how broad street does business. Moreover who says your career is guaranteed with a common degree in CS. Why do we have Phds and life long learning. Have you studied Logic thoroughly, Data Modelling, Machine Learning, Bayesian Probability, Matrix, Computational Complexity, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, etc. Hello!

Programming / Re: What Is Concurrency And How Does Your Language Tackle It? by johnbendie(m): 3:37am On Mar 16, 2012
@Seun:Thanks for a very clear explanation and sharing some of your languages approach to the issue. I was also hoping you could throw in some code to show the problem and then some more to show how it was solved with the additional library.

@kobojunkie: You're very right research is necessary at this point but sharing what you know on the subject can serve to throw more light on the ongoing research if you understand what I mean wink Awaiting you code contribution and hoping you speak a different language.

@Beaf: I quite agree with you. Concurrency issues seem to be very subtle. Another interesting observation is that concurrency was necessitated by the increasing demand for distributed computing which implied concurrent requests to your programs so initially some languages did not take this into consideration in their design and so solutions to these concurrency problems seems to be an afterthought as you can quite clearly see from Seun's post. What's even more interesting is that most of these new languages took these problems into consideration in their design
Programming / What Is Concurrency And How Does Your Language Tackle It? by johnbendie(m): 9:29am On Mar 15, 2012
Hello Nairalanders, I have been banging my head against the wall trying to understand concurrency. I have made some progress but I still cannot grab the concept fully. So I will appreciate some code samples illustrating the phenomena and some pointers as to how your language tackles the problem.

Programming / Re: A Way Forward For The Field Of Computer Science In Nigeria by johnbendie(m): 4:49am On Mar 13, 2012
henryskywalker2003(m):

Ehmmm, Just a side note sha. For those calling Bill Gates one of the greatest coders eva, I think you guys must have lost it. Why? Take a look at each iteration of the Windows OS, even with it being proprietory and all (closed source), it is the most easily penetratable, so bad that the company sets out a day every week, called "patch tuesdays" just too patch up system flaws that ends up being penetrated again before the week runs out.
Now, take a look at Linus Torvalds that designed the Linux OS when he was just a student and compare the two works. I know you guys will start shouting about it being Open Source and many people working on it, but the same goes for Windows. Or were you thinking that it's Bill Gates that codes the entire thing? If that's not ok with you, then compare the first windows and the first linux and tell me which is better and a more solid os. My point? There are lots of things about computing that a graduate can always do better than someone that learnt just a few aspects of it. Give them the credit, they spent 4years learning everything there is to know about the danm machine. In fact if you ask me, BASIC, COBOL, FORTRAN etc shouldn't be scrapped cos any body that has a good understanding of the above can easily learn java, asp, .net etc far easily than someone that started with java. Those are the basics and if you know them, you can even bring in some concepts to from them into the new one you are learning. Check out any good university curriculum abroad, they still teach those languages, heck, they even expose them to UNIX and other ancient OS so as to have a solid understanding of the basics.

+ 1 for henryskywalker2003 for a clear view. Just to add a little note.
Both the Universities and Aptech and the likes of it are all important to the computer ecosystem, and both need to be improved upon in many ways. But alas, how do we go about it?

Above all these limitation what matters is the willingness and motivation of the computer practitioner to learn new things. To dig deeper. But from personal experience I am forced to agree that a sound foundation in computer science helps a lot and that can be easily had as a CS undergrad. So to compensate I've had to dig deeper on my own to understand what computation really means(theory) and then thereafter come upto speed with current technologies.

But to answer the question of the OP.. the way forward for me will be about first sharing knowledge of what we know with each other. We need blogs of techy guys showing off their exploits in their favorite languages. We need a lot of code samples flying around on the internet coming from Nigerians. We need some form of open source projects that we can work together on. Then our lecturers can learn from these masters and be able to teach some new things in school. Becos for good or bad this situation is replicated among other disciplines and new things rarely find their way into schools quickly.

So to the gurus please I encourage you to start sharing first then others can follow suit.

John
