He was also the major character in the movie "The harder the they come" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sXLFEkfvGE One of the themes of the movie is the injustice recording artistes face with the recording companies. |
One of the best preserved houses on the Island is the Water House on Kakawa Street. The Brazilian architecture style building was built by Candido da Rocha, Nigeria's first millionaire. I like how the family has been able to restore and preserve it. I had the opportunity of going inside the compound about 20 years ago. Such a beauty!

Jeezuzpick: ![]() My Post Of The Day! |
Ishilove:It's true that men aged faster in those days. Smoking was a major culprit. That said, the producers aged John Amos (mainly his hair) to make him match Esther Rolle in Good Times |
Jeezuzpick:I couldn't help viewing him with the "Fawlty" lens whenever I saw him in other shows/movies. |
mirrael68:The show was notorious for stereotypes. It was common at the time the show aired for hotels in Britain to employ foreigners who could not communicate effectively in English language. Manuel (the Spanish waiter) represented these foreign workers in the series. In airing the show in Spain and France, Manuel's nationality is Mexican, to make the stereotype less offensive to Europeans. Basil took digs at Germans and the Old Major at Indians. Ishilove:It was the same with Esther Rolle (The mother- Florida Evans) who was 19 years older than John Amos (The father-James) in Good Times. He was 34 while she was 53 when the show started. Isabelle Sanford was 21 years older than her on screen husband (Sherman Hemsley) in The Jeffersons. She was 57 and he was 36 when the series began. Pic 1& 2 - Good Times Pic 3 & 4 - Jeffersons

nairalanda1:We all know how that will turn out! |
Very good actress. Really loved her ability to handle Basil (John Cleese). I found out much later that Connie Booth (Polly ) was married to John Cleese in real life. |
johnie:Went back to check Nigeria's 2010 and 2014 U-20 Women's World Cup squad lists again. Osinachi Ohale was actually in the 2010 squad! No other player from that squad is still playing for Nigeria now. The other person from that era in the present Falcons is Francisca Ordega who played at the 2010 FIFA U17 World Cup. They've been playing for Nigeria for 15 years - Give both of them their flowers! That should say something to those who accuse Nigeria of age cheating. Asisat, Halimatu Ayinde, Uchenna Kalu and Chinwendu Ihezuo were all in the 2014 World Cup squad and currently in the Falcons team. These two Nigerian teams (2010 and 2014) got to the finals on the U20 tournaments. The 2012 Nigerian team got to the semis and came third. The best any other African teams has done in the tournament is Cameroun's Round of 16 finish in 2024. Nigeria lost to eventual finalists (Japan) in the Round of 16 at that tournament in 2024. Ghana has been to the tournament 7 times but have never gone beyond the first round. Nigeria has gone 11 times and has won silver twice and bronze once Interestingly, we had a US-born player in the 2014 squad - Courtney Dike. Alozie reminds me so much of her. Courtney scored the fastest goal in the history of the tournament, just 14 seconds into Nigeria's match against Korea Republic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5duLMqezeI&list=PLCGIzmTE4d0h8fo86d0ijUdkcS-r_5KPD&index=5 Pic 1-3 - Courtney Dike Pic 4 - Michelle Alozie

She deserves it! Chiamaka and Esther ought to be there as well. Since nominations are made by players, players from the "big" leagues are more likely to be among the top nominees - players from the Spanish, English, and US leagues. Yes, Cheebak plays in Saudi Arabia and is an outlier. The move by Chiamaka from Paris FC to England may seem insignificant (especially considering the standing of Brighton among others) but we'll see the positive results in years to come. Agyeman is her team mate at Brighton. Notice that no player from the French or German league is there. Or did I miss anyone? |
Deltamani:I only mentioned two Falcons players. Stella was outstanding Even the commentator acknowledged her here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd307h7z9Ts?si=xeAsQDrj6OCmIPRs I don't know if you ever watched Patience though. Also add Rita Nwadike and Vera Okolo to the Falcons list Add Finidi George to the Eagles list. |
I just came across this comment on YouTube. https://youtube.com/shorts/fzCUvfGHTU0?si=kn_s2ebdCQaBtGL0 I've also wondered why Rasheedat now plays as a midfielder in the Falcons. She used to be our pacy right winger right from the U-17s. This is the same way Shakirat Moshood is now being played as a midfielder. Does it have anything to do with them now being captains of their teams?

Went to look at this photograph again. Only three players in the starting line up against Benin did not go through the ranks - Alozie, Okoronkwo and Plumptre. That points to something positive about our youth football system. Meanwhile, we know how much value those three who didnt go through the youth system add to the team. I believe only Assisat and Ohale are left from their set. We have capable alternatives for Assisat. We should get some for Ohale. She has done very well for Nigeria!

QueenJazz:Yes. He belonged to the 2023 set. I agree with your choice of players. Daniel Bameyi is also a good player and leader. Harcourt, the keeper can be shaky at times but is promising. I this current U17 girls team, Nguemo, Oduntan and Queen Joseph already stand out for me. I expected more from Shakirat Moshood, the captain. I don't know if it is the position she is being played in or the weight of the captain's arm band but she hasn't been her usual self. I have had concerns with our goalkeeping department- male and female- over the years. After Enyeanma, we've not had another steady safe pair of hands. Who are we grooming to take over from Chiamaka in years to come? By now we should have an idea. This department is one that is unforgiving of mistakes Think about Agbonivbare, Uzoho and others. One mistake and the fans don't want to hear your name again. |
BascoVanVeli:Deborah is a gem! A delight to watch. Very hard working, skillful and intelligent. Little wonder they call her Kante! She gave 2 sublime assists in this match. Her waltz at the 58th minute of the match (6:10 in this video) and sublime pass to Esther would have been one for the archives if not for the offside. We sometimes underate how successful our youth system has been in identifying and giving the platform for young talents. Whenever I think about the number of our former underage players now doing well in the Super Eagles and Falcons, I am so pleased. Consider the list - Francesca Ordega, Assisat Oshoala, Osinachi Ohale, Chiamaka, Rasheedat, Ijamilusi, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Tosin Demehin, Deborah Abiodun, Miracle Usani, etc. On the male side, Osimhen, Chukwueze, Ndidi, Omeruo, Iheanacho. Kanu Nwaknwo, Okocha, Etc All these went through the youth ranks. In some cases, our youth teams they played for did not even do well at the FIFA U17 or U20 world cups, yet they were able to pivot to Europe and establish themselves. It's why I am happy that Benjamin Frederick was called up to the Eagles despite his U20 team not doing well. The blend of these home-grown former underage players and the foreign born (Troost, Lookman Ashleigh, Alozie, Esther Okoronkwo, etc) is what makes us a potent force. We need to balance that mix optimally to attain our true potential while maintaining a healthy pipeline of talents that would do us proud. Yes, our U20 lost to eventual finalists, Argentina, at the last FIFA U20 tournament. The next thing for us to do is identify the outstanding players in that squad and help them to good leagues and introduce them into the Super Eagles. Same for our U17 boys who missed the ticket for the next world cup. |
ekehopp2:I also wondered if she is of Camerounian origin going by that first name- Nguemo. I must say, that girl is very good. She reminds me of Francesca Ordega. In her physical stature and style of play. Incidentally both are Tiv, from Benue State. I hope she gets enough exposure to get into a good team in Europe. I also hope Francesca can mentor her. . Nigeria's traditional playing style involves pacy wingers - Tijani Babangida, Pius Ikedia Moses Simon etc. On the Women's side, we've had Francisca and Patience Avre, among others. The less emphasis on such strikers is what makes our pattern of play very drab these days. |
This thread absolutely made my day! I wish Nairalanders could always be like this. Calling out false information and backing it up with solid evidence. It truly made my day!

By Duro Ikhazuagbe Nigeria’s former FIFA Council Member, Amaju Melvin Pinnick, has asked South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, to learn to speak as a statesman rather than voicing as a street urchin. Pinnick’s comment is a direct reply to comments made by the South African sports minister on Robert Marawa’s Marawa Sports Worldwide, at the weekend, wishingNigeria not to qualify for the World Cup from the playoffs starting in Morocco next month. According to McKenzie: “I want Nigeria to lose. They must not go to the World Cup. Another African country must go,” observed the minister in anger over his perceived Nigeria’s role in the deduction of three points from South Africa for fielding an ineligible player in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in March. But Pinnick who is a serving Deputy Chairperson of FIFA Men’s National Teams Competitions Committee, a position that gives him strong voice in the corridors of world football, told THISDAY yesterday that McKenzie lacks the decorum of a minister in a developed economy like South Africa. “If it is the wish of God that Nigeria should qualify for the World Cup, the South African sports minister’s careless statement cannot stop it from happening. It is unfortunate to have someone like McKenzie appointed a minister in a developed, civilized country like South Africa. I know several people in South Africa who are knowledgeable in football matters who will not speak with such hatred like McKenzie. “For instance, SAFA President, Dr Danny Jordaan, is a respected football voice worldwide who will not go that route of hate. Dr Jordaan can never speak such careless statement about wishing Nigeria bad. The CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe who is my Boss is another fine gentleman, deeply rooted in continental and global football matters. These two gentlemen and several others know the consequences of fielding an ineligible player in a World Cup qualifier. The South African sports minister should just shut up instead of embarrassing the country with his careless, unfounded statements against Nigeria,” observed the former NFF president who once served as CAF’ FIrst Vice President. Pinnick recalled that in 2018, Nigeria suffered the same consequence for fielding ineligible Shehu Abdullahi against Algeria in a World Cup qualifier for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. “FIFA deducted three points and three goals from Nigeria’s total points. We didn’t blame anyone because we knew we were at fault. NFF or our Sports Minister at the time didn’t blame anybody or country because we knew we were at fault. “The South African Football Association (SAFA) I am sure are aware that it was their mistake and have owned up to the error. Why then should a sports minister decides to put the blame for the consequences on Nigeria?” queried Pinnick who wants the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, to re-examine the quality of McKenzie in his cabinet. He therefore urged the South African sports minister to learn how to speak from his Nigerian equivalent, Shehu Dikko, who is Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC). “Dikko was my deputy president when I was NFF president. He’s a fine gentleman who does not dabble into NFF matters despite the fact that he understands football business. As Chairman of the NSC, Dikko can never speak about South Africa the way McKenzie did against Nigeria,” stressed the FIFA committee deputy chairperson. Pinnick insisted that South Africans should be grateful to the Super Eagles for defeating Benin Republic in Uyo otherwise it should have been the Cheetahs that picked the direct qualification ticket to the World Cup. “I will rather say that this minister is an ingrate for not thanking Super Eagles for defeating Benin Republic in Uyo. He didn’t realized that if Benin had won or drawn the match in Uyo, South Africa will not be the beneficiary of the Group C direct qualification ticket for the World Cup.” The former NFF President is however happy that the Super Eagles have regained their form and ready to fight for the sole ticket in Morocco and go to Mexico to grab one of the two tickets on offer in the Intercontinental playoffs. Nigeria advanced to the African playoffs as one of the four best-ranked runners-up across the nine groups. They will face Gabon on November 13 for a spot in the inter-confederation playoffs in Mexico March next year. McKenzie is rooting for Gabon’s Panthers to come out on top as he wants Nigeria to pay for its alleged role in Bafana Bafana’s sanction. https://www.thisdaylive.com/2025/10/20/pinnick-slams-safrican-sports-minister-for-wishing-eagles-failure-in-world-cup-playoffs/ Original thread: https://www.nairaland.com/8542166/2026-wcq-super-eagles-must#137164501 |
Love800:The Spanish Liga F is currently the best female league in the world followed by the French Division 1 Féminine. The English Women's Super League (WSL) is fourth after the German Frauen-Bundesliga. Winners of the The Best FIFA Women's Player and Ballon d'or since 2021 have all been players from the Spanish Liga F. The 2025 winner, Aitana Bonmati, won 3 times consecutively since 2023. Alexis Putellas won in 2021 and 2022. Both of them play for Barcelona FC. |
SmartPolician:Starting 61 years later than the Men’s World Cup, the women’s tournament expanded from 26 to 64 matches in just 32 years, catching up with the men’s format. Regarding average attendance, the women’s World Cup has almost doubled from around 19,600 to nearly 30,900 in 32 years, while the men’s average attendance increased from about 32,800 to almost 53,200 over 93 years. These trends suggest the women’s World Cup is not only catching up to the men’s World Cup, but is doing so at a much faster rate. If this rapid growth continues, the women’s World Cup could match or surpass the men’s in total and average attendance in the coming decades. With an unprecedented two million fans flooding the stadiums in 2023, it’s clear the world is finally recognizing the extraordinary skill and electrifying excitement that women bring to soccer. https://theconversation.com/the-fifa-womens-world-cup-is-closing-its-gap-with-the-mens-tournament-213840#:~:text=The%20men's%20World%20Cup%20grew,nearly%20two%20million%20in%202023.

Love800:Linda Caicedo, currently plays for Real Madrid. She is the first and only one to play at U-17, U-20 and Women's World Cups and score at all of them, in a single year, all by the age of 18. She was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer at the age of 15 but overcame it to showcase her talent on the world stage at the 2022 U-17 World Cup in India where she helped her team to the finals and was joint highest goal scorer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K5mgRNHSmY You should also find out about Vicky Lopez who is a highly decorated young Spanish player and had a Nigerian mother. robosky02:The minister is known to be xenophobic. Here was his take during the Chidinma Adetshina beauty contest debacle: South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie – known for his xenophobic rhetoric – only added fuel to the fire. “We truly cannot have Nigerians compete in our Miss SA competition. I wanna get all the facts before I comment, but it gives funny vibes already,” McKenzie posted on X. This statement set off a barrage of online abuse, escalating into manifest threats – despite the fact that Adetshina was born in South Africa and therefore qualified to compete. https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2024/9/17/how-a-beauty-queen-became-the-face-of-south-africa-nigeria-tensions Chidinma Adetshina eventually went on to contest and win the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024. She then represented Nigeria at Miss Universe 2024 where she was first runner-up, against contestants from 126 countries. Adetshina's placement is Nigeria's ever highest at Miss Universe. Adetshina was also crowned Miss Universe Africa and Oceania as the highest ranked African Contestant of 2024 “The best revenge is massive success.” — Frank Sinatra The best response Nigeria can give the minister is to not only qualify for the world cup but also do better than South Africa at the tournament. |

In July this year, the Super Falcons did Nigeria proud, winning the CAF Women’s African Cup of Nations hosted by Morocco in spectacular fashion. The tournament concluded with the Falcons’ captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, clinching the Player of the Tournament award, while Chiamaka Nnadozie was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament. Esther Okoronkwo and Michelle Alozie were named along with these two in the Team of the Tournament. Nigeria's Justin Madugu was named Coach of the Tournament. Chiimaka and Madugu were later named among nominees for Ballon d'Or awards. Meanwhile, the 2025 U-17 Women’s World Cup is currently taking place in Morocco, with the Falconets competing for glory. Looking ahead, the Africa playoffs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring the Super Eagles, will also be held in November, once again in Morocco. The late revival of the Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup hopes through their victory over Benin is reminiscent of the Super Falcons’ dramatic comeback from a first-half two-goal deficit against Morocco in the WAFCON Finals. Can Nigeria make it a historic treble on Moroccan soil? That would be truly remarkable!
