Christianity EtcNigerian Catholic Churches Say No To Same-sex Marriage by Johnnoo(op): 12:17pm On Oct 27, 2014
The President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, has said that the stand of the church against same sex marriage is unwavering.

He, however, said that what the church had said was that while it would not excommunicate the gay community, the church would assist them with prayers and counselling to overcome their abnormal behaviour.

Kaigama, who spoke in Jos while briefing newsmen on Sunday on the outcome of the 3rd Extra Ordinary Synod of the Family of the Catholic Church held in Rome recently, said that the outcome of the synod had been given varied interpretation, especially its position on same-sex marriage.

According to him, the Church does not condone and has not endorsed same-sex marriage, but considered marriage as a union between a man and a woman for the purpose of raising a family to reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ on the importance of the family as a domestic church.

He said, “The concern of the Synod is the biblical teaching on marriage and family and this is theme of the Synod. The Book of Genesis shows that the man and the woman are created in the image and likeness of God. In receiving and accepting each other, the man and the woman recognise that they are made for each other. Through procreation, they collaborated with God in accepting and transmitting life. By the grace of God, a man and a woman are united in marriage and are to be faithful to, and love each other forever.”

Kaigama, who is also the archbishop of Jos, said the Synod emphasised marriage as sacred and indissoluble and as such could not condone anything outside this divine order of God.

He, however, added that what had been misconstrued as the church’s endorsement of homosexuality was the emphasis on the fact that those with such tendencies were human beings created by the same God and instead of treating them as second hand citizens, they needed to be helped spiritually to overcome such tendencies.

He said that the synod, which was attended by more than 250 participants comprising of cardinals and bishops (Synod Fathers) from five continents with the presence of Pope Francis, was a period of prayerful reflection and dialogue that considered many positive aspects of marriage and the desire to foster family values, preparation for marriage, openness to life in marriage, enduring the challenges of marriage with strong faith, love and determination.

Kaigama said, “The Synod did not endorse gay marriage, but emphasised the indissolubility of marriage as a union between a man and a woman according to the scripture and the church teachings, using the Holy Family of Nazareth as a model for all families.”

He added that many families gave wonderful testimonies during the Synod of how their unions had endured the test of time.

He advised the people not to misconstrue the intentions and positions of the Catholic Church on such sensitive issue as it would not condone anything outside the teachings of Jesus Christ.

PoliticsAPC To Amend Constitution, Adopts Manifesto On Wednesday by Johnnoo(op): 12:09pm On Oct 27, 2014
The opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, Sunday, announced that it will hold an extraordinary national convention on Wednesday in Abuja to approve amendments to the constitution of the party and adopt its six-point manifesto for the 2015 general elections.

This was disclosed by the party’s publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in a statement in Lagos.

The party said the approval of the amended constitution will align the party’s constitution better with the Electoral Act and also help it function more efficiently.

It also said the convention will adopt the six point agenda manifesto of the party, an extract from the one earlier submitted to INEC for the purpose of the 2015 elections.

The statement said: “The manifesto to be adopted at the extraordinary convention of our party is specifically for the 2015 general elections. Because of shifting priorities, we do not believe that a party manifesto should be one for all time but a document that will adjust to the changing needs of the people.

“In this regard, we have conducted a survey to find out what Nigerians urgently need at the moment to raise their standard of living and ensure their security and welfare, which is the raison d’etre of any government. Based on the outcome of the survey, we have come up with a six-point manifesto, which we extracted from the one we submitted to INEC earlier.

“The six broad priority areas for the APC ahead of the 2015 general elections are national security, good governance, human capital development, economic development, land and natural resources as well as foreign policy. The issue of job creation, fight against corruption, infrastructural development, health, qualitative education, regular power supply, etc are subsumed under these broad priority areas.’’

According Mohammed, the 6 point manifesto will be made available to Nigerians once it is approved.

You don't make any sense here. This is a choice that is not forced on anyone. So I don't understand why you are typing long pointless essay and giving yourself unnecessary headache. How did birth control pills impact health care provision? isn't the cost of paid maternity leave also borne somewhere? Please try to think logically. Women are making the choice to post-pone child birth. This is a trend that is not going anywhere as long as life expectancy continues to rise. Age of first marriage is also rising so this suggests that this is a choice men are also making. if men and women are marrying at a later age, isn't it logical that they will also have children at later ages and therefore creating need for fertility treatments?
you making a condescending comment that you "care" about women's bodies more than women themselves makes you look like a fool. Many of the women who are undergoing these procedures have supportive, educated and enlightened husbands. If you don't agree with it, no one is forcing you to marry and post-pone child birth. It's a matter of choice and women are allowed to have choice. they can marry early, marry late, focus on career, become housewives or whatever.men can also do the same. it is a matter of CHOICE.

abeg focus on your own health and stop starving yourself over women's reproductive rights issues. go and eat your food.

yes. With all my heart. You fail to understand one thing. If Nigerians are given correct facilities and materials, the made in Nigeria product will be far better than the imported products. Try a local shoe maker to produce one for you then do the comparism for yourself.
Read between lines & understand where the question was coming from. I believe in made in Nigeria products, but sad to say, majority of Nigerians prefer foreign products to that of local ones.
