Makinde Has No Power To Remove LAUTECH VC – SSANU

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Branch, Ogbomoso has described the “step aside” directive given to the University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Olufisayo Ologunde as illegal and hasty.

Rising from its online emergency meeting on Sunday, the Union said only the School Governing Council can remove the Vice Chancellor, not the governor or the State’s Ministry of Education.

The communique of the meeting reads,

i). LAUTECH is not an appendage of the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, Oyo State or the extension of the Office of the Hon. Commissioner of Education, Science & Technology of the State but a statutory body that has its establishment law as may be amended.

ii). The law of the university did not give power to administer the university to the Commissioner but the Governing Council.

iii). The power to appoint and terminate staff appointments is resided in the Governing Council and not the Visitor or his proxies including the Commissioner of Education, Science & Technology.

iv). The University enjoys autonomy in Nigeria, Oyo State inclusive.

v). The purported letter signed by the Commissioner of Education, Science & Technology will have no basis in law and can only generate animosity and innuendos within the university community and between Oyo and Osun States more so, the joint ownership status of the university was just severed in December 2020 and unfortunately the deposed Vice Chancellor is a vestige of the arrangement prior to the dismantling of the joint ownership status.

vi). The “step aside” directive is considered hasty, cumbersome and incongruous to the order that brought in the current principal officers of the university on February 14, 2019, and should be reversed in the name of equity, fairness and good conscience and also negated the position of His Excellency on LAUTECH as said in his radio and television broadcast of Saturday, February 20, 2021.

“We would like to remind His Excellency, Engineer Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde that on Saturday, February 20, 2021, on a live radio program anchored by the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State(because), he informed the whole world that he heard on a good note that the Vice Chancellor incited the Unions on campus to go on strike to demand for the payment of their Eight(cool months outstanding salaries and allowances having paid Eight(coolbillion naira to Osun State on the separation of joint ownership.

“The Governor in his final submission reasoned that he will allow the Governing Council to investigate the matter when it resumed work in order of him not to be seen as been despotic and undemocratic in dispensing judgment on the matter and that he will possibly not like a court case on the matter.

“Today, that Council has not officially assumed duty in the university since its inauguration by the Governor on April 1, 2021.

” Can we now ask the Commissioner where he derived the power to order the “step aside” of the Vice Chancellor when the Visitor he claimed to have directed him has openly declared that such power belongs to the Governing Council?

“Our Union is not interested in who becomes the Vice Chancellor beyond the fact that we lobbied the last Governing Council to consider and give us a homegrown Chief Executive Officer of the University after more than 25years of existence.

The Union pleaded with His Excellency, Engineer Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde to rescind the directive as it is being executed and allow the rule of law to prevail under the principles of natural justice pending the open investigation of the Vice Chancellor by the Governing Council if need be.

Over the weekend, Oyo state government asked the VC to step aside.

Makinde Lacks Power To Remove LAUTECH VC, SSANU

Ibadan- Senior staff members of the Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomosho, have described the step aside order given to the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Michael Ologunde, by the Seyi Makinde led administration as illegal.

Recall that Governor Seyi Makinde in a letter through his Commissioner for Education, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, on Saturday, called for the resignation of the Vice Chancellor.

However, senior staff members of the institution in a press statement made available to pressmen in Ibadan the Oyo State on Monday morning, which was signed by their chairman, Fajoye Hamzat Oyelere rejected this order.

In a copy of the letter, obtained by the Daily INDEPENDENT Reporter, noted that the institution is an autonomous body and the Vice Chancellor can only be ordered to resign before the end of his tenure by the Governing Council.

The statement read as thus:

SSANU rejects sack of LAUTECH VC by Gov. Makinde

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Branch, Ogbomoso chapter has rejected Governor Seyi Makinde’s directive for its Vice-Chancellor (VC) to step down.

Governor Makinde, had on Friday, directed that the Vice-Chancellor Prof Michael Ologunde step aside until further notice.

The governor’s decision was communicated in a letter through the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Olasunkanmi Olaleye.

The letter read, “His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State and the visitor to the Ladoke Akintola University, has directed that the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. M. O. Ologunde should step aside until further notice.

“Consequently, the VC has also been directed to hand over forthwith to the next principal officer in rank in order to ensure uninterrupted flow of normal activities of the institution.”

The decision was taken after Makinde accused the vice-chancellor of instigating workers of the university to agitate payment of unpaid salaries.

Makinde had said he was surprised that workers at the university started agitating payment of outstanding salaries immediately after Oyo state took over ownership of the institution.

However, SSANU after holding an emergency meeting to address the directive on Sunday, said Governor Makinde’s directive was illegal.

The union emerged with a joint voice, unequivocally condemning the VC’s firing and making it clear that only the School Governing Council can unseat the VC and not the governor or the Oyo State Ministry of Education.

Read the outcome of the meeting below:

i. LAUTECH is not an appendage of the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, Oyo State or the extension of the Office of the Hon. Commissioner of Education, Science & Technology of the State but a statutory body that has its establishment law as may be amended.

The union, however, asked Governor ‘Seyi Makinde to do the right thing and rescind the directive and follow the rule of law by letting the Governing council investigate the offences of the VC and also standing by their decision.

ASUU condemns LAUTECH VC sack by Makinde

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), has condemned the ‘Step Aside’ order given to the vice chancellor of the institution by the Oyo State Government.

The union in a release jointly signed by its Chairperson, Dr Biodun Olaniran and Secretary, Dr Toyin Abegunrin, after its congress on Monday, said the state government did not follow due process in its action.

Governor Seyi Makinde had on Friday ordered LAUTECH Vice-Chancellor, Prof Michael Ologunde, to step aside until further notice.

The governor’s decision was conveyed in a letter by Olasunkanmi Olaleye, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology.

“His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State and visitor to the Ladoke Akintola University, has ordered that the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. M. O. Ologunde, should step aside until further notice,” the letter said.

The union, however, said that it received with shock, the directive emanating from the office of the Commissioner for Education of Oyo State, asking the Vice-Chancellor to step aside.

It said that the state government erred in its action because it was strange to the provision of the university act.

It denounced the VC’s dismissal, emphasising that state government lacked the power to sack the vice chancellor without the recommendation of the governing council.

It stated that based on the content of the April 16, press release, a congress of the Union held on April 19, insisted that the governor should follow due process.

“That the `step aside order’ violated the provisions of the University Miscellaneous Act as amended, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology law 2020 and the University conventions.

“If there is any perceived misdemeanour on the part of any officer appointed by the law in the University, due process according to the law must be followed to address such,” it stated.

The union stated that ASUU acknowledged the power of the Visitor to hire and fire on one part.

“And, that such power is premised on the recommendation of the governing council according to the extant laws.

“That as at today, the governing council has not been properly constituted in line with law of the University.

“ASUU LAUTECH therefore, requests that, to maintain industrial harmony on campus and the on-going restoration of the image of the University, the above resolutions should be considered with the necessary urgency,” it stated.

Property worth millions of Naira have been destroyed as a result of fire incident that occurred at Araromi auto spare parts market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The fire incident which started around 10pm on Friday destroyed some shops and property at the market worth millions of naira.

Sources told DAILY POST that the Oyo State fire department was informed immediately the fire engulfed the market.

It was gathered that the arrival of the fire department prevented further spread of the fire.

One of the traders at the market said the inferno started when power restored in the night.

Chief Fire Officer in Oyo State, Mr Moshood Adewuyi when contacted confirmed the incident to DAILY POST on Saturday.

He, however, added that his men are still at the market to prevent further spread of the fire.

“Yes. Do you want to confirm the situation at Gate. Yes, our men are still at the market, we are still there.

“The incident started overnight. There is no casualty. I cannot tell you the number of shops that were destroyed because we are still there.”
