May I ask why you're returning your hardware?
Is it due to obstruction?
twosquare:
I don't know what to say. You will probably face a lot with obstruction. Of course, you will get a good speed, but it will be ON and Off. Hence, don't waste your money.

I'm even returning mine as I'm still within the 30 days refund policy.

Just a warning ahead. Our ISPs can be frustrating depending on where you live. And you can take the pictures of your surroundings for analysis or use AI to analyse it for possible obstruction.

However, if you still feel need to, and you can afford the monthly payment of 57k...you can go ahead and fulfill your curiosity.

Tbh, I don't use third party routers with my setup. You can check TP Link.
If you'd be interested in STARLINK's Mesh router, I have a brand new Gen 3 mesh router for sale at a very good deal.

For wired connection, ensure the ethernet cable has proper seal.
Nteogwuija:
Thanks for your response. I think i prefer option 1.

I just checked the cable on Jumia and I'm seeing 15k for 50m.

Pls can you recommend a good third party router?

Thanks once again.

PhonesRe: My SpaceX Starlink Internet Experience In Lagos, Nigeria by johnnyholtby(m):
I live in a 2 storey shared apartment too (top floor) and it's also a shared apartment. I shared my starlink with my downstairs neighbour.
I bought STARLINK MINI at first just to try and it worked fine for me. It worked fine for my downstairs neighbour too, just that they were only able to use the 2.4ghz band cos 5ghz has shorter range. I had to upgrade to the Gen 3 standard and I can now share my starlink with 2 of my neighbours, my downstair neighbour and the neighbour beside my apartment (same floor).

For your case, if you go for the Mini, you'll definitely be on the 2.4ghz band (very usable but slower compared to 5ghz band). The best place for installation would be the roof or a secure place that has a clear view of the sky

Here are your options....

1. Get a mini plus a good third party router and enable bypass mode. P.S. you'd have to get a waterproof ethernet cable too.

2. Get a mini and get STARLINK's router to extend your WiFi coverage. You can use the router as wired or wireless Mesh (I recommend wired mesh if you want max throughout). Again, you'd have to buy waterproof ethernet cable if you're going for wired Mesh.

3. If you can afford it, get a Gen 3 kit. It comes with a Gen 3 router so with WiFi coverage, you're covered.

Tbh, the mini would have been your best option if your apartment is on the top floor. Plus the price difference of the mini and standard kit is huge.

Nteogwuija:
Please, I live in a shared compound. It's a 2 storey building. Can I get Starlink Mini? And if yes, how do I install it, since installing it on the roof won't work?

Recently, for like 2 months now, the network in my area has been abysmal. For MTN, it's almost like someone turns off the data switch once it's 8AM in the morning and then turns it on at 1AM.

From 8AM till 12AM you'd get speed around 200 to 400 kbps. Then from 1 AM to 7AM you get around 70 to 100mbps.

For Airtel you can't just understand them, you'd see 40 Mbps yet you can't do anything with it.

Glo, that one is not even having complete network bar let alone manageable for browsing.

I can't work during the day. I now spend money renting coworking spaces, which becomes very expensive in the long-run.

I just want to know if I can get the Mini Starlink, considering my budget and how I can install it, considering I stay in a 2 storey shared compound. And my flat is on the ground floor.

I've even complained several times to MTN about the issue and all they keep asking is for my number and browsing device and location. Like, what has that got to do with the situation?

One of the perks of starlink. It took MTN 6months and lots of visitations before they reluctantly agreed to replace my brand new faulty router
ibietela2:
Yes, they said GPS stuff… a replacement has been sent.
PhonesRe: My SpaceX Starlink Internet Experience In Lagos, Nigeria by johnnyholtby(m): 9:40pm On Apr 03
Damn! I can totally relate.

To get reasonable and approachable neighbours is a nightmare. Country hard.
Skydiv:
Those guys in my compound are acting very weird. I remember when were asked to pay a total of #1m so that we can be added to band A users last year, a private investor bought poles, transformers and cables to connect our street to band A, so if you want to use the light you have to pay him and buy your own meter. We are 8 tenants in total, but each tenant was giving one form of excuse or the other, some were even saying it should be the responsibility of the landlord who wasn't living in the compound with us. I spent around 400k for everything to connect my flat, but today they are all gathered in my frontage like where APC is sharing election rice. They are all charging one device or the other as i'm writing this, with extension sockets littered everywhere since electricity on band E is 0.

The internet issue is also affecting them, but they prefer flocking around around a new hotel whose management installed starlink and did not password it. They gather around there like ants around sugar looking for a free network to do their Yahoo work.
PhonesRe: My SpaceX Starlink Internet Experience In Lagos, Nigeria by johnnyholtby(m): 11:25am On Apr 03
I totally get you bro. Starlink wouldn't have been an option if our local ISPs are good.
If you're considering getting starlink, you don't have to get the Gen 3 kit. For most people, the Starlink Mini is more than good enough (and considerably cheaper too).

Most starlink owners I know "carpool". If you have a neighbours you trust, you can easily share the subscription bill.

If your work depends on the internet, starlink would definitely be a necessity as it's fast and consistent.
Skydiv:
Una own better with Starlink, currently stuck with the garbage MTN, GLO, Airtel craps. As it stands i can't even get upto 1mbps on any if the networks, i get around 8-9 Mbps at midnight 12 - 3Am. Given my current financial status i cant afford the #594k standard kit, even if i scrape myself to purchase it i can't afford the subscription.

When problem go finish? first it was flooded area solved, then insecurity area solved, then power solved, and now internet connection.
Is it a curse to be a Nigerian living in Nigeria?
PhonesRe: My SpaceX Starlink Internet Experience In Lagos, Nigeria by johnnyholtby(m): 8:24am On Apr 03
Recent updates made starlink more power efficient. On a very sunny day, starlink consumes more power (up to 90w for Gen 3), while at night or a cool day, starlink consumes very low power (as low as 14w on Gen 3)
ask4bk:
Seems the gen 2 doesn't consume anything again oh.
24w and this includes my gen 2 starlink, a standing fan plugged and charging a mini speaker.
All 24w only. 😱😱😱
PhonesRe: My SpaceX Starlink Internet Experience In Lagos, Nigeria by johnnyholtby(m):
If you're getting 30mbps speeds with starlink then obviously starlink isn't for you or you hardware is faulty. Both on my Mini and Gen 3 standard, I easily get 200 - 400 Mbps. I'd advise you look elsewhere if your speeds are that low. But based on my usage, I can 100% confirm that no ISP in Nigeria comes close to starlink with all things considered. Again this is based on my personal usage and opinion.
Tolu181:
first of all if starlink will bring out 50mbps speed plan for 25k like mtn and airtel
everyone will join that but they know that

they blocked their cheap roaming plan from nigerians

not everyone is getting 100mbps, here i get 20 to 30mbps while paying 57k

they should bring up affordable plans for nigerians

MTN is far better than starlink, na hype una dey hype this expensive rubbish

look at 555k for a kit then 57k for monthly plan that means extra 570k with stupid speed

meanwhile MTN and AIRTEL KIT free of charge and you guys are comparing starlink to them

starlink is fraud

I dare Airtel ODU and MTN fiber to achieve this data usage in just 3 days grin grin grin grin

PhonesRe: My SpaceX Starlink Internet Experience In Lagos, Nigeria by johnnyholtby(m): 3:16pm On Apr 02
Lol, is this for real?
Comparing ODU and fiber X to starlink. Same ODU that works once in a week? Same fibre X that isn't widely available in the country?

Btw, both ODU and fiberX aren't even truly unlimited.

And who told you Starlink speed is at 25 Mbps ?
You'd definitely look stoopid when you argue without facts.

Tolu181:
naso someone go defend.

nigerian love defending poison

airtel odu is 25k
mtn fibre X is 30k

starlink is 57k with 25mbps

and you call it cheapest

Lol they aren't. Infact they keep adding more customers everyday. Do you know how many users on their waitlist??

No naija ISP can touch STARLINK's service and customer support
Tolu181:
Starlink better reduce their data plan price

They are already losing customers
PhonesRe: My SpaceX Starlink Internet Experience In Lagos, Nigeria by johnnyholtby(m): 10:53pm On Apr 01
To avoid issues, ensure the location you use when ordering is your actual location .
Skydiv:
Wahala no dey finish. Spent heavily in relocating to my current location because the area is on band A. Based on my findings before moving in, they are guaranteed of at least 20 hours electricity daily, except during grid collapses. Got internet speeds of around 15 Mbps on Airtel and MTN on speed test.

Already 2 months in Airtel, Glo, and MTN have suddenly stopped working. First it was MTN, then Airtel, and now Glo. There are network masts in the area, calls and sms are fine but 0 internet. Can't even load the Nairaland home page.

I'm considering ordering Starlink, but when using my current location, the hardware kit automatically chosen is the standard kit with an instalmenetal payment plan. But if I input a location like Yenagoa, I'm given an option of mini or standard kit, total cost for the mini and activation which was waived was just #318k. I guess the reason for the automatic standard kit is that my current area is at capacity.

So I want to ask if I use Yenagoa as the location and when the order arrives, I install it at my location in Delta state, will there be limitations or issues later on? If I should opt for the standard kit, is there a grace period for default payments? The hardware kit and subscription payment are around #89k monthly. (32k + 57k). From solved wahala to internet wahala when problems finish?

I really don't know what's going on with starlink. First attached screenshot is speed between my router and internet. Second attached screenshot is speed between my phone and internet. Third attached screenshot is the speed between my phone and router which is pretty good.

Raw speed is 400mbps but speed on my phone is 1mbps. I actually thought my router is the culprit but when I use a VPN, my phone's speed to the internet is way higher.

I've spent hours troubleshooting but nothing worked!

Anybody else experiencing this? Abi my router is toasted

Yeah, this has been happening. You need to enable custom DNS. STARLINK's DNS is trash and even slower than Cloudfare and Google's.

Check the attached screenshot for my DNS settings. Save settings then unplug your starlink for at least 30 seconds. Plug your starlink back in and you're done.

Nah, still hasn't shipped.

Has yours been shipped? Mine was shipped yesterday and expecting to be delivered today.
PhonesRe: My SpaceX Starlink Internet Experience In Lagos, Nigeria by johnnyholtby(m):
If you're still having issues with STARLINK's DNS, just unplug your starlink from the power source for at least 5minutes. Plug it back in and you should be good.

You can use Google and Cloudfare as custom DNS too.

PhonesRe: My SpaceX Starlink Internet Experience In Lagos, Nigeria by johnnyholtby(m): 11:09pm On Mar 29
Create a ticket and explain to Support. Most times they'll even call you. Got a month credit for a similar issue. You can't be waiting for your hardware to arrive while your subscription is literally useless.
Iinnov8:
Thanks boss. Will definitely keep us all posted.

Meanwhile, it looks like we will not be getting compensated for the weeks we are unable to use the access due to the defective kit. I thought they used to give a free 1 month service back then
PhonesRe: My SpaceX Starlink Internet Experience In Lagos, Nigeria by johnnyholtby(m): 6:48pm On Mar 28
Before your hardware ships, you can always change your delivery address (if that's what you want). They'll also call you for the delivery, you can direct the courier to your actual location
Iinnov8:
People of God, abeg i need help.

My starlink router has refused to come on at all. I am chatting with Starlink Support now and they said my kit is defective and they will send me a new one.

Does anyone know how long this will take? My location is Mowe,Ogun State. And which dispatch carrier do they usually use? I am worried that they may not be able to locate my address, because it is quite hard to find.
PhonesRe: My SpaceX Starlink Internet Experience In Lagos, Nigeria by johnnyholtby(m): 6:46pm On Mar 28
I also have a replacement router and PSU that haven't shipped for over a week now. We just have to wait
Iinnov8:
Currently experiencing same issue you experienced 2 years ago, my Oga.

My router has refused to come on after nearly 2 years of use. I chatted with Starlink support and they have promised to send a new one.

I see that your issue started on the 1st of April, and they didnt ship it until 10th of April, and you got it on the 15th of April. Any idea why it took them 9 whole days to ship out?

My entire household have become too dependent on the Starlink that i dont know how we will cope in the coming days... embarassed...it will be hard to work remotely and the house go dey very quiet due to lack of Netflix and chills...lol

Abeg, make una advise me

You don't have to create a ticket. Delivery period is usually based on where they're shipping from. It very fast if they ship from their warehouse in Lagos and considerably slower when they ship from USA.
