Politics / Memories Of DSS Invasion As Buhari, Daura Hold Talks by johnnyvid(m): 5:30am On Nov 02, 2018
Memories of DSS invasion as Buhari, Daura hold talks
President, ex-DG ‘discuss Boko Haram, others’

President Muhammadu Buhari has met with former Department of State Services (DSS) Director-General Lawal Daura.

Last weekend’s Aso Villa meeting is said to be in connection with a report on the August 7, 2018 invasion of the National Assembly by hooded DSS operatives.

It was also gathered that the meeting centered on the resurgence of the Boko Haram insurgency in some parts of the Northeast.

The options before the President are either to close Daura’s chapter on the invasion or re-engage him in the light of what some have considered an intelligence deficit in the fight against Boko Haram and the seeming ethno-religious tension in some states in the last three months.

The plight of Leah Sharibu and Boko Haram’s execution of Hauwa Amina Liman, one of the two kidnapped International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) workers were said to have created some intelligence gaps, which Daura was believed to have filled in the past.

A Presidency source confirmed that the President “had audience” with the former DG of DSS. This is the first time Buhari has met the former spymaster since he left office.

”Their meeting had to do with a pending report on the invasion of the National Assembly before the President and the nation’s security apparatchik,” the source said, pleading not to be named because of the “sensitivity” of the matter.

“Apart from reading the report, the President used the opportunity to hear Daura’s side of the security siege to the National Assembly by DSS operatives,” he added.

The meeting followed what the source described as pressure from Dasuki’s associate including members of the President’s kitchen cabinet.

”While some want the President to foreclose Daura’s case, others have insisted that the President should re-engage the former DG of DSS.

”Forces opposed to Daura have defended his sack by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as a timely decision to save the nation’s democracy. They also see Daura’s return under any guise as a slight on the VP and a signal that the Presidency is disunited,” said the source, adding:

”They also claim that Daura did more damage to the security system and brought much strain to the principle of separation of powers by the three arms of government, including the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary. They pointed at the arbitrary invasion, arrest and detention of judges by DSS.”

But, to Daura’s associate what is more important is “the larger picture of the nation’s security”. They claim that Daura’s contributions far outweigh the infraction of August 7, 2018 more so when the ex-DG of DSS has insisted that he did not act alone.

Said the source: ”The pro-Daura elements attributed the recent intelligence setback in managing Boko Haram crisis in the Northeast to the absence of the ex-DG of DSS. The Army and the Air Force have lived up to expectations but the intelligence back up has suffered in the last three months, leading to the incessant ambush of troops.

”They claimed that Daura was a key link to Boko Haram contacts and negotiation with the insurgents which led to the release of Chibok and 105 girls of Government Girls’ Technical College, Dapchi in Yobe State even without the knowledge of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force.

”They pointed to the dilemma of a Dapchi school girl, Leah Sharibu, and felt only Daura ( as a member of the nation’s security set-up) can address it.

Investigation revealed that there is a plot by some forces to mount pressure on the President to appoint Daura to another top security office .

Another source added: “No doubt, there are plans to re-draw the nation’s security apparatchik to respond to recent challenges in the Northeast and other parts of the country. What is on the card is for the President to re-engage Daura and give him a higher responsibility. But the President is also mindful of the possible backlash such a measure will attract.”

“A major challenge is the moral burden the return of Daura might create for President Muhammadu Buhari because Nigerians will see him as indulging Daura and making the former DG of DSS indispensable.”

While sacking Daura, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who was then the Acting President, told the nation that the disciplinary measure was necessary to end impunity in the country.

He described the DSS operatives’ invasion of the National Assembly as ‘a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and accepted notions of law and order.’

Inspector -General of Police Ibrahim Idris, in his report on the invasion of the National Assembly, claimed that Daura ‘acted unilaterally, without informing the Presidency. He did not share or intimate other Security Agencies on the unlawful operations’.

Politics / Kaduna Refinery Stays Dormant As NNPC Loses N10.96bn by johnnyvid(m): 1:04pm On Nov 01, 2018
The Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company , one of the country ’s crude oil refineries being managed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, has remained dormant .
According to the corporation , the refinery ’s capacity utilisation has remained at zero for months, as the KRPC is not refining crude oil despite receiving the commodity .
In its latest monthly oil and gas report for June 2018 , which was obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday , the NNPC also stated that its group trading surplus dropped from N18 .11 bn in May to N7 .15 bn in June this year .
This implies that the oil firm lost N 10 .96 bn in terms of its trading surplus within one month .
Findings showed that the firm , however , posted a positive 2018 year -to- date trading surplus, as it made N 69 .31 bn within the six - month period.
An analysis of the performances of the refineries showed that the KRPC received 78 ,833 metric tonnes of crude in the months of May and June this year .
It, however , processed no drop of crude oil in the two months, as its capacity utilisation was given as zero per cent.
The Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company processed 246 ,039 MT and 138 ,310 MT of crude in May and June , respectively , thus , the plant’s capacity utilisation dropped from 46 .55 per cent to 27 . 04 per cent in the period .
For the Port Harcourt Refining Company , it was observed that the plant processed 132 ,595 MT and 237 ,875 MT of crude oil in May and June , respectively . This showed that unlike the other two refineries, the PHRC ’ s capacity utilisation moved up from 14 .93 per cent to 27 .68 per cent in the period.
Nigeria ’s refineries have been performing poorly over time and the Federal Government often makes promises to get them fixed .
On October 18 this year , The PUNCH reported that the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources , Ibe Kachikwu , stated that the refineries would soon get investments of about $3bn . https://punchng.com/kaduna-refinery-stays-dormant-as-nnpc-loses-n10-96bn/

Politics / ‘islamists Extremists Killed 260 Christians, 100 Muslims In October’ by johnnyvid(m): 12:13pm On Nov 01, 2018
Islamic extremists killed no fewer than 360 defenseless civilians, including 260 Christians and 100 Muslims in the country in the month of October 2018.
A report, released yesterday by the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, was signed by its board Chairman, Emeka Umeagbalasi and Head, Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, Obianuju Igboeli.

The report showed that jihadists perpetrated the killings in the Middle Belt Region of the country, particularly in Kaduna, Plateau and Benue, as well as in Adamawa and Borno states.

It also lamented the response of the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai and the Nigerian Army to the killings, saying it was distasteful.

The breakdown of the over 360 deaths, revisited and evaluated by Intersociety, showed that no fewer than 135 Christians were killed in Kaduna State in October; specifically between October 18 and 21, 2018.

Over 53 Christians were killed in Jos, Plateau State in the past 30 days and not less than 30 (16 Christians and three Churches and 15 Muslims) in Lafia-Lamurde and Mamsirmi communities in Adamawa State on October 23, 2018.

The report also disclosed that in Benue State, no fewer than 14 Christians were killed in Agena and Agbaaye communities of Ukum and Okpokwu local government areas of the state.

In Borno State, along Maiduguri-Damboa Road and Molai Village in Jere Local Government Area, Boko Haram terrorists slaughtered 38 civilians, many of them Christians.

“Therefore, with the loss of no fewer than 260 Christians in the past 30 days, the total number of defenseless Christians killed by herdsmen, jihadists and their collaborators in the Middle Belt in the past 10 months of 2018 has risen to at least 2,262,” it stated.

Meanwhile, the Journalists for Democratic Rights (JODER), has disclosed that at least 10 people are killed every month in Plateau, Nasarrawa, Benue and Kaduna states.

It also pointed out that over 200 people are being held at various security formations without trial, warning that the lingering ethnic crisis in some Northern states could snowball into a major national disaster that may affect the 2019 polls.

The National Working Group on Peace and Conflict Prevention (NWGPC) pioneered by JODER stated in its report yesterday that government and communities in Plateau, Nassaraw and Kaduna States were key to the resolution of the lingering crisis in the states.

It had submitted a comprehensive peace roadmap to governors of Kaduna, Plateau and Nassarawa states where ethnic conflicts had claimed several lives.

The report signed by Abukar Onalo, Chief Digifa Werenipre and Adewale Adeoye noted that the state governments and people were underestimating the crisis in Kaduna, Plateau and other Northern states. http://m.guardian.ng/news/islamists-killed-260-christians-100-muslims-in-october/

Politics / Osun: Political Parties Give INEC 7-day Ultimatum To Declare Adeleke Winner by johnnyvid(m): 10:55am On Oct 04, 2018
A forum of political parties in Osun state under the aegis of the Council of Political Parties with Integrity (CPPI) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to return the ‘mandate’ of the people and declare Sen. Ademola Adeleke of the People’s Democratic party (PDP) as winner of the state governorship election.
The forum was reacting to the outcome of the September 22 gubernatorial election which was concluded on Thursday September 27.
CPPI alleged that INEC connived with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to subvert the will of the people by manipulating the election result.
However, the CPPI threatened to embark on protest across the state if the electoral umpire fail to announce the cancellation of the rerun election and declare the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP ), Senator Ademola Adeleke, winner of the poll.
Speaking with journalists in Osogbo, the acting Chairman of CPPI, Tajudeen Osunrotimi, said they would leave no stone unturned to ensure that their “stolen mandate” is retrieved.
Osunrotimi, who berated the conduct of INEC during the supplementary election, said the September 22 gubernatorial election was declared inconclusive in order to subvert the will of the people who gleefully trooped out to cast their vote for Adeleke.
According to the Chairman, Nigeria Element Progresives Party (NEPP) “The council of political parties with Integrity at an emergency meeting in Osogbo Wednesday 3rd October 2018 expressed our mind at the turn of the event in the Osun state governorship election, particularly the decision of the INEC to declare the September 22, 2018 election in Osun state inconclusive as well as the wrongful and violent that marred the conduct of purported rerun.”
“We noted that, an electoral commission, in the 21 century, could be brazenly act the scripts of the ruling party in Nigeria (APC) to thwart the political expression of the electorate on the 22nd September polls and replace it with a violent and rigged rerun.”
“We note too, the shock and disbelief, across the world, which trailed the decision of INEC on that election.”
“It is therefore imperative that the decision of the people of Osun state electing Senator Ademola Adeleke as their Governor most be respected by INEC and federal government.”
“In the first instance, it is important to note that we unequivocally condemned the conduct of INEC even in the 22nd September election and that it was rigged by the collaboration of INEC.”
“We observed that the peaceful conduct of voters at the various units on the election was subverted by duplicity of the INEC in awarding unearned votes to ruling APC as the collation stage in the 22nd September election as well as the violent conduct of the rerun.”
“We are particularly objected to the conduct of Mr Segun Agbaje , the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Osun State INEC for his misdirection. Till date Mr Agbaje did not fix the ceiling of expenditure of political parties.”
“Mr Agbaje misinformed the populace that there should be no phone meanwhile, any person could carry his phone except into the voting cubicle.”
“Mr Agbaje together with his staff and the police looked the other side when the rerun was violently rigged . Mr Agbaje did not give some of the contesting political parties a copy of the signed result sheet of the election.”
“We condemn the impunity with which the INEC conducted the election. Finally we demand for the cancellation of the violent rerun and that Ademola Adeleke be declared as the governor-elect.”
Echoing a similar view, the Chairman , Restoration Party (RP) Dr Tosin Odeyemi said it was quite unfortunate that the commission could go the extent of conniving with the APC to manipulate election result.
Odeyemi who appealed to the INEC and the Federal Government to reverse their decision, said they should abstain from any action that is capable of setting the state on fire.
He said: ” we don’t want Osun to be set on fire. The incumbent government is using its power to subvert the will of the people of Osun and this can cause crisis “.
“We beseech Nigerians not to get tired to fight for their right. We are going to fight this course legally because we know we were being cheated.
“The INEC connived to ruling party to upturn the victory to favour Gboyega Oyetola, the APC candidate, and we are not going to accept this from them.” http://citymirrornews.com/top-news/2018/03/osun-election-political-parties-give-inec-7-day-ultimatum-to-declare-adeleke-winner/
