He was only in Canada for 10 days so didn't apply for OWP. It takes about 2 weeks to process so he'll do that on his next trip which will be longer. I don't think its a biggie as long as you have the requirements.

Hi guys, hope you all are enjoying the weather. Quick one. Is there anyone who is studying and has applied or plans to apply for EE? Need to clarify some things. Thanks

Hello Bukky, you cannot convert from visit to study inside Canada. You have to apply from Nigeria.

bukinoversace:
More on my post please. Is it possible to convert to student visa from canada for less than 3 weeks. So I can use my leave period to do that then come home and resign officially. What do you think please .......

Thanks I found a place today. A nice condo in york

Update on spouse. He applied for visit visa last week Monday and got it today.

When he gets here we'll apply for change of circumstances or whatever that application is. It takes only a few weeks with all medical and police clearance done upfront. Will provide update as we go along.

shilling:

I have a few friends who study/work at York and have had great luck finding apartments downtown and around Bathurst and Sheppard. A friend is sharing a spacious 2 bedroom apartment and is paying around $900. There are many good apartments, you just have to keep looking multiple times a day.

I'm looking for a place in Toronto. Something near York university. I have seen the worst of the worst. 14 in a house et al

shilling:
I didn't follow your previous comments, but in what cities are you looking for accommodation? I have a pretty good personal track record of finding great apartments for pretty cheap.

My go-to websites are craiglist and the used..... (insert cityname).com e.g. usedcalgary.com, usedtoronto.com. I check those websites every hour or so and contact landlords immediately to arrange a viewing. Obviously, don't share any personal information with whoever posts the ad. Hope that helps.

Are you currently studying in canada?

Just a question pls, after your degree, will the temporary work permit still be effective for you to work for a certain duration till you get a better job.How does it work out. Just for clarification sake.tnxs

Thanks @deniyor and @saxywale. I have a good idea of what I need to do to stay back. Accommodation is still a bummer. I keep seeing crappy apartments even the ones that are $700. Soooooo frustrating. Kijiji, prop2go, places4students and easyroommate have all failed me.

Thanks @Saxywale. My question is not so much about my profession. I have tons of experience in the IT field with tons of globally accepted certifications. What I will like to know is what options are available to obtain residency after doing a one year graduate certificate Course? Is the only route securing a job offer or do an additional one year program?

saxywale:

Are you in a regulated profession? If you have professional certificate(s) that is/are accepted worldwide as applicable in the IT field, then that would be an added advantage. Project management on it's own is diverse as it cuts across so many field but. Research your market well.
Travel / Re: Nigerian Students In Canada: How Do You Survive? by jojcanada(f): 4:55am On Jan 10, 2015
Profession is project management and I get a one year pgwp when through

saxywale:
@jojcanada
I am sorry but I can't offer an advice here as I don't know your profession. I also live in the west which is more of an energy and mining hub compared to Toronto which is the financial hub. How many years post study work visa do you receive after your program?.

I'm at Seneca doing project management and will like to remain and work in that field.
I have like 12 years work experience already. What are my options? And how do I proceed?

Thanks. Been checking out Columbia, mec and Tna. Will settle for one today. When I'm warm enough will start viewing properties. But this cold has no respect o!

saxywale:

I and my wife got Columbia jackets for ourselves. They are very good quality and still much affordable. Parka type jackets are our favorites, they are always very thick and packed with plenty down feathers.

There are many other makes out there that are excellent like mountainhardwear, mec, northface e.t.c

With accommodation, kijiji is still the best option since it's the biggest online classified website in Canada. Your other option is to ask people like course mates or in a gathering like a church.

Fantastic. Will let you know how I get on.

I am currently in Lagos. Escorted my wife to Windsor in August but came back September. I came back to apply for OPW for myself and TRV for our 2 kids. My wife is at Uwindsor.
Travel / Re: Nigerian Students In Canada: How Do You Survive? by jojcanada(f): 7:12pm On Jan 05, 2015
Thanks. Where are you?

tee12345:
I will advise you consider the OPW for spouse of Foreign students. He is eligible for it and its inclusive of a TRV. Make sure you prove that you are enrolled full time. Enjoy your studies.

Cash madam ke? I claim it sha. I hate cold so I will rather deprive myself in other areas than be cold. Plus better to invest in a coat that will last many winters even though as a woman I can't see how I will have only one coat and use for more than one winter. Hmmmmmm. Woman wahala. I'll go to a different mall today and see. Got my first feel of snow yesterday which was still mild so I need coat asap. Luckily still being driven around.

On accommodation, I'm currently staying in a luxury condo with a friend but sadly have to move closer to school next week. Kijiji has not been a great resource. I've also tried easyroommate and places4students with no luck. What's the best way to find affordable accommodation?

You were spot on. swap took all of 10mins.
thanks once again

saxywale:

If you have a full UK license (non expired), then you could exchange your license with that of Alberta without writing any test. I don't know about the province you want to stay but most are similar any way. Alberta has Reciprocal Licensing Agreements with the following countries in addition to all Canadian jurisdictions and territories:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Isle of Man, Japan, Northern Ireland, Republic of Korea, Scotland, Switzerland, United States and Wales.

I also googled Ontario for you as that is a popular destination.

Exchange a driver’s licence
You can exchange an out-of-province licence for an Ontario licence, if you are re-locating from:

any Canadian province or territory
Canadian Forces Europe
U.S. States
Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Isle of Man, Japan, Korea, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Switzerland.

What tests do I take?
You could need to take certain driving tests before you get a full driver’s licence. It depends on:

how long you have been driving
if the valid driver’s licence you have was issued in a country, province or state that does or does not have an exchange agreement in place with Ontario
2+ years driving experience (with exchange)
You only need to take an eye test, when you apply. After you pass this test, you get a full licence.

https://www.ontario.ca/driving-and-roads/exchange-foreign-drivers-licence

In summary, the only test you would take is the eye test.

Went winter jacket hunting today and I'm confused. A friend advised canada goose which is about $500 and above. What other brands can I get that will keep cold at bay and not break the bank?

Happy new year everyone. I arrived Toronto safely yesterday via Ethiopian airline. Longest journey of my life. 24 hours travel time was a bit too much for me. But I thank God for a smooth flight. Temp was -5 which wasn't toooo bad. The immigration queue at the airport was dreadful and took about 2 hours. I thank God it went smoothly. Today I plan to get cracking getting sim, opening bank account, social security and driver's license.

To all those who have been helpful on this thread I say a big thanks and to all those waiting for the good news, may God grant you your hearts desires this new year. Have a great year all

Thanks for the response.

He will apply for short visit and we'll take it from there. I hope that his travel history and high profile job will make it easy for him to get visit visa.

On the driver's licence issue. I have a full UK drivers licence. Will I still need to write test? Seen some conflicting info on Google.

Doortun:

Sponsoring is hard and nearly impossible if you are still studying. The best you can get is a short term visitation and it is usually for graduation/convocation. I know people who got denied on based on that.

For driver's licence google MTO driver. You have to write a test to obtain your G1 then you could proceed to stage 2 and 3. Better if you still hold youvr Nigerian driver's license.

Travel / Re: Travelling To Canada Part 6 by jojcanada(f): 2:32pm On Dec 07, 2014
I know exactly how you feel Tonye. I was devastated too when I learned same. I'm going first, later this month, and my hubby will come visit next month and hopefully stay till I'm done. No way we can stay apart for too long. (Newly weds fever still got us). All the best and I'm more than willing to let you know how we get on.

TONYE001:
Does this mean that a husband and his wife can't study at the same time? There must be a better alternative!

I can't leave my wife behind, no, I can't.

What other option do I have aside going alone?
