That's true .. aside finding the cost of living low (not all goods and services though), i didn't like the frustration i had to go through to get basic things done. I was actually becoming angry at the least provocation which i didn't like it .. i picked up some good things though .. i found Nigerians to be resilient, positive and very competitive .. they relish good food well well, you have to finish the food your're served .. vaxx: |
Most Nigerians who have bought into the Giant of Africa thing find it surprising that life is better in some African countries compared to the frustration in Nigeria. for those who don't believe in the development indices used in assessing countries, you should realise that all developed countries score very high on them and that's what makes life better in those countries. you don't find electricity, water, healthcare, education, transportation, strong institutions and effective government lacking in those countries. you can tell the future of a country by looking at government policy and initiatives in these critical areas. there are some electric bulbs which are still in use in Nigeria, we called them onion bulbs (incandescent bulbs) in Ghana. They were banned a decade back and you don't find them on the market now. before the ban was implemented the Energy commission (Ghana), through a programme, had to supply energy efficient bulbs (fluorescent) to all households to replace the incandescent bulbs in use. those bulbs were not energy efficient. moreover, fluorescent bulbs last longer - sometimes 8X times longer compared to incandescent bulbs. Now the commission is looking at promoting LED bulbs, which are more efficient than the fluorescent bulbs. The effect of such policy is reduced energy consumption for households, resulting in some cost savings too. We should have some informed discussions aside the usual banter that goes on here. A form of peer review of African countries will be insightful. Let's know what is happening in the various countries. what policies and programs are being carried out by our governments and how will those policies move our countries forward? If you take a good look at those development indices, it's just a reflection of what's on the ground. We have to create the countries we want for ourselves. the Americans have proven themselves; the Europeans have done it and same for the Asians. Africa, why always me? ![]() Obi1kenobi: |
Could you provide the GDP in Naira from your institution in charge of that? Ghana's GDP from our statistical service for 2016 was GHS167 billion. this is then translated to USD at the prevailing exchange rate. your GDP figure somehow doesn't tie in with your exchange rate. Just provide the GDP figure as calculated in Naira. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-37045276 uzzyfire: |
i'm not saying we have 100% access to improved water. we have achieved 90% coverage and the target is to reach universal (100%) coverage by 2020. that's what i know of Ghana. i've lived in Lagos, VI and the estate i stayed in had its own pump water system not to talk of the situation on the mainland and other parts of Nigeria. on the point of Nigeria not being peaceful due to the huge population, it's not entirely valid. Those countries Nigeria ranks better in the Global peace Index mostly have smaller population than Nigeria. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Peace_Index http://visionofhumanity.org/app/uploads/2017/02/GPI-2016-Report_2.pdf Nowenuse: |
the statistics service in Ghana measures our GDP in our own currency GHS. At any point in time the GDP in USD reflects the prevailing exchange rate for the period. how is Nigeria's own calculated and what's your GDP in Naira for 2016 .. please provide a credible source .. I've read it somewhere that it's 90 trillion naira uzzyfire: |
as compared to Nigeria, Ghana is expensive. cost of fuel in Ghana is about 3x the prices in Nigeria. VAT rate in Nigeria is 5%, VAT in Ghana is 15% plus NHIS 2.5% making 17.5% tax on every item you buy. Ghana has been ranked as the most expensive country in Africa. http://starrfmonline.com/2017/02/22/ghana-ranked-expensive-country-live-africa-survey/ vaxx: |
You've lived in Ghana before .. how long? I've also stayed in Lagos for sometime . The good thing is the cost of living which is pretty cool compared to Ghana vaxx: |
That's true .. access to improved water has reached 90% and the target is to achieve 100% coverage by 2020. Our water source is direct from the water corporation. Most households in Lagos pump water from the ground. The estate I lived in VI had its own pump water system. forgiveness: |
You think Nigeria's GDP is impressive? What's the GDP for 2016 in your own currency, naira? https://www.google.com.gh/amp/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/37045276#ampshare=http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-37045276 Nowenuse: |

Most of those buildings in marina have not been maintained and not in use .. the place is messy and stuffy uzzyfire: |
In terms of social progress, Nigeria trails Ghana between 10 to 20 years .. Just30: |

Ghana flag is dope .. hi naija folks .. don't you think your flag is boring, the person who designed it didn't put in much effort at all .. just saying .. maybe one of you could enlighten us on the your flag .. especially the first green stripe and the second one .. what's the difference .. O0XYGEN: |
Cos our passport is valued more than yours .. with a Ghanaian passport, you don't need a visa to visit Singapore .. just give me one reason I should switch nationalities, don't mention jollof ... uzzyfire: |
Have you asked yourself why it's always Nigeria against either Ghana/SA/Kenya? Have you ever come across Ghana vs Kenya vs SA or any combination thereof? You ought to look within yourself before you start blaming someone. If you go attack a country and they strike back .. you go with your usual cry .. they hate us, they hates us .. Marcelo290: |
Do you know the size of our budget, foreign reserves, money supply, minimum wage and even Stipends for service personnel? Not to mention the kilometers of motorable roads we have.. you better get your facts right Nowenuse: |
How do you want it reflect? Nowenuse: |

Yes sir .. i need some lessons in economics .. that's why i came asking you to help .. it's an opportunity to share the knowledge you've acquired over the years .. Nowenuse: |
you've made a point .. but then you can use quantitative/statistics to hide facts or the realities on the ground. Ghana is about 1/4 the size of Nigeria in landmass .. just as you have 36 states, Ghana has 10 administrative regions. what i've realised is Nigerians hide behind the huge numbers they churn out (due to their huge population) to distort facts when you engage them in any discourse. same way their leaders use those figures to deceive the populace. Just imagine a leader say the whole of water used in Ghana will not be enough to flush WCs in Lagos alone. meanwhile majority of the people living in Lagos needs electricity to draw water from the ground. Pumping water from the ground is not the norm in Ghana just as i don't know how to operate a generator. if you want an informed discussion you will get one. but if you want to belittle other countries or demonstrate ignorance .. i'll gladly defend my country, Ghana. Nowenuse: |
Bros .. if fortunately for you, you happen to be among the rich in your country .. it's an opportunity to make an impact in people's lives .. there is no point in going for events and showering money on people to display your affluence .. that to me is poverty of the mind (the worst form of poverty you'll find); you won't find people do that in any civilised society. i want to see african states work towards ensuring universal access to basic social amenities such as universal access to education, universal access to power, a functioning health insurance for every citizen, secure and safe communities. this is what you find in civilised and developed countries. opportunity is there for individuals to make money but the vulnerable are also protected through various social intervention programs. GDPless? what's GDP and what does it tell about a country? i want to know more about it . Please assist . Nowenuse: |
