Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that is acquired through the exchange of different bodily fluids such as semen, blood, or saliva. It is also known as "the Clap." Gonorrhea is caused by bacteria called Neisseria gonorrheae, which can infect the urethra, cervix, anus, or throat. Majority of the people who get infected with the disease are under 30. In the United States, 75% of gonorrhea cases involve people aged 16 to 30 years old. When properly treated, antibiotics can cure the disease. Women infected with gonorrhea may exhibit mild or no symptoms that is why it is difficult to diagnose. Also, gonorrhea symptoms in women are often mistaken for a bladder or other bacterial vaginal infection and as many as 50% of women with gonorrhea manifest no symptoms. Men are more likely to exhibit symptoms. Gonorrhea symptoms depend on how you contracted the infection and how long you've had it you may experience symptoms concerning these areas: urethra, cervix, anus or throat. The signs of the disease usually appear between 2 to 10 days after acquiring the infection, but it can take as long as 30 days before the symptoms appear. Women suffering from gonorrhea may experience frequent and painful urination, as well s bleeding after intercourse. These symptoms are normal especially in the early stages of a cervical infection. Symptoms which occur later on are fever, vomiting, nausea, bloody or yellow vaginal discharge, and bleeding between periods. Men infected with gonorrhea may feel painful urination, frequent urination, and painful and swollen testicles. These are manifestations of an infection in the urethra. There might also be a white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis. Also, the penis may also look redder and more tender than normal and there may also be swelling of the glands in the groin. Gonorrhea can also infect the throat and the anus. An oral infection usually brings about a sore throat, and several pus-like materials on the tonsils or on the back of the throat. An anus that is infected may exhibit painful bowel movements, discharge, itching, and bloody stool. Infections to these areas may be transmitted to other parts of the body that is why immediate treatment is very important. If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to different serious health complications. In women, the bacteria can easily go from the cervix to the uterus, and to the fallopian tubes which can cause the condition called pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Approximately 15% of women who have infected cervix will develop PID. PID can cause infertility because of damaged fallopian tubes. Infected women also have a higher chance of having an ectopic pregnancy, which is very dangerous and life threatening. Men who are infected and remain untreated may develop epididymitis, which causes pain in the testicles and may result to infertility. If you exhibit any of the gonorrhea symptoms, or think you may have been exposed, it is necessary to get tested for the infection immediately. Fortunately, there are a lot of STD clinics that offer tests and laboratory exams for Gonorrhea. People infected with gonorrhea have a higher chance of contracting Chlamydia or HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Source: http://women-ng..com.ng |

The Nigeria Police Force yesterday paraded a kidnap kingpin, Maitarari Isa Saidu, who was arrested with 35 stolen vehicles. Saidu was paraded in Minna, Niger State by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPPRO) Jimoh Moshood in Minna along with 48 suspects, including two of his children. The father of 29 children and three wives told journalists that he was behind several kidnap activities across the state and neighbouring Zamfara, Kaduna and FCT and Yobe in the Northeast. He said he collected N300m and N170m respectively from his last two operations before concentrating on the business of receiving stolen vehicles. He said the police recovered 28 stolen cars from his depots in Niger and Abuja, 15 others from Zamfara and a number of other stolen cars from Kaduna. He said, “The business of kidnapping became too risky for me. That was the reason for switching to receiving stolen cars and I have been in this for some years.” He said he ran into trouble when his boys received and paid N400,000 for a car which he quickly took to sell at the cost of N800,000 in Kano as a result of which the police got him. Parading the suspects, Jimoh Moshood said that they were arrested by men of Operation Save Sanity deployed to check rising crime rate within five states, including Niger. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/police-nab-63-year-old-kidnap-kingpin-with-35-stolen-cars.html |
The senate, yesterday, said the conduct of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State is a threat to democracy in Nigeria. This was one of the resolutions passed following a motion moved by Senator Ahmad Ogembe (PDP, Kogi) on the disruption of his empowerment programme on Saturday in Okene, Kogi State. The senate further resolved to set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the circumstances that led to the disruption of the empowerment programme and the level of involvement of the police. A two-week timeframe had been given to members of the panel to submit their report. The membership of the committee was not immediately announced. One of the resolutions reads: “The senate condemns this act and we believe this is a threat to democracy.” Ogembe told the senate that political thugs disrupted his empowerment programme and that he could no longer go to his constituency freely without being harassed and intimidated. He said if the situation was left unchecked; it might lead to complete breakdown of law and order in the state. In his response, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, condemned the act and thereafter listed senators who had issues with their governors. “People are holding meetings everyday on how to deal with every one of us here (in the senate). No matter the intimidation, we will continue to do our job,” he said. Ekweremadu said: “If he (Bello) doesn’t stop, there is no how he will come back in 2019, never, no he will not. God will show him that he is a God of justice and this is a message to all those people who have caused all kinds of problem in Nigeria at different level. The problem in Nigeria is that our democracy is receding. Who says army cannot take over ? Let us not joke with our democracy that is the issue.” He recalled his experience between 2011 and 2015 when he had a running battle with the then Enugu State Governor. Also speaking, the Deputy Senate Leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah (APC, Kebbi), said the issue in Kogi was a serious one. “We can validly say that the Governor of Kogi is a threat to democracy. He is not representing us well as a party that promised to entrench democracy,” he said. In his remarks, Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said, “It is important that we take this discussion on the unfortunate incident that happened to Sen. Ogembe today because it is not really just about Kogi State. “It is clear from what we are seeing that Kogi State is coming to the point where it is a threat to our democracy and it cannot be seen to define our democracy because this is not what our democracy is about. We must be seen to be making example to other parts of the world. “Distinguished colleagues, I want you all to contribute and see that we must get to the bottom of this. We must take actions that will prevent this kind of incidents from happening and we must look at what our prayers will be that will have that effect and condemn this in the strongest terms because this kind of action is totally unacceptable and it cannot be allowed to continue. “We are almost 20 years into democracy and this cannot be the democracy that we should be talking about after 20 years. This is totally unacceptable. “We saw the case in Kaduna State. How can a governor proudly say he is going to bulldoze a house in Nigeria at this time and we are all keeping quiet? These are things that we must condemn totally,” he said. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/kogi-gov-s-conduct-threat-to-democracy-senate.html

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday said lapses in intelligence gathering made it possible for insurgents to abduct 110 schoolgirls in Dapchi, Yobe State two weeks ago. The President spoke at the 8th edition of the National Security Seminar, with the theme, “fighting tomorrow’s warfare today at the National Defence College auditorium Abuja. Represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the President said henceforth the main focus of his administration would be to strengthen intelligence gathering capacity through use of cutting-edge technology. He added that such strategies would make it less likely for tragic events as the recent attacks in Dapchi and Rann to occur. Speaking on the Dapchi incidence, Osinbajo said, “I’m aware that since the incident happened Nigeria’s security and intelligence chiefs have all mobilised to Yobe State and environs, and have been re-assessing their strategies and approaches to securing lives and property and containing the ongoing threat that is Boko Haram.” President of the Alumni Association of the National Defence College (AANDEC) Brigadier General Jonathan Temlong said the Armed Forces were ill prepared to tackle the Boko Haram terrorist from the onset. “In the threat analysis we predicted that the major threat our Armed Forces would face in the future will be asymmetric. The problem was that the document was not adopted and let alone implemented. We were therefore caught napping by not being prepared against an asymmetric threat at the onset of the Boko Haram crisis,” Temlong said. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/dapchi-abductions-revealed-intelligence-lapses-buhari.html |
There are strong indications that the federal government has tactically approved the payment of N650 billion subsidy arrears to oil depot owners and marketers. According to a statement by the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMA), jointly signed by Mr Dapo Abiodun, Chairman and Olufemi Adewole, executive secretary, in Lagos, marketers have been reassured about the federal government's commitment to make payment as evidenced by the request for approval for appropriation of same to the National Assembly. The marketers said: "Following the 14-day ultimatum to commence staff disengagement given to the federal government by DAPPMA, in the light of over N650 billion owed to petroleum marketers, a series of constructive engagements and meetings were held with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Ministry of Labour, the Presidency and DAPPMA/Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), marketers have been reassured about the federal government's commitment to make payment as evidenced by the request for approval for appropriation of same to the National Assembly.” The marketers hope that approval would be given promptly and long overdue payments made subsequently. "Consequently, DAPPMA/MOMAN, hereby suspend the issued 14-day ultimatum and we plead with our staff under the various umbrella unions, NARTO, PENGASSAN, NUPENG, PTD to please whilst this approval for appropriation by the National Assembly is being deliberated on and processed, which we believe will not exceed two weeks in adverse implications of any delay DAPPMA urged members to ensure that there were no distractions in the distribution of premium Motor spirit also known as petrol nationwide. The marketers had two weeks ago issued a 14-day ultimatum to the federal government within which to pay its debt of N165 billion fuel subsidy arrears, with a threat to commence sack of their staff if it fails to meet the ultimatum. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/fg-approves-n650bn-payment-to-oil-marketers.html |

Justice will be done, the president said in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital at the commencement of his visit to troubled spots in five states. The visit will take the president to Benue, Yobe, Zamfara and Rivers States where scores of people were killed in communal violence in recent times. The president stated this during a stakeholders meeting between the Fulani and Mambilla ethnic groups at the Government House Jalingo. Buhari said the number of people killed on the Mambilla Plateau, Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba was more than those killed in Zamfara and Benue states combined. He said he was in the state to condole with the government and those who lost their loved ones. He described the attacks leading to wanton destruction of lives and property as unfortunate. He explained that relationship between members of a community should not be left to government alone but should also be the duty of the traditional institutions to ensure peaceful coexistence among their people. In his speech, Taraba State Governor Darius Ishaku said the administration would do everything possible to ensure that peace was maintained in the state. He also assured the president that the traditional institutions and leaders of Sardauna Local Government would be mobilized to work together to speed up the take-off of the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project in the area. President Buhari was accompanied by Service Chiefs, Ministers of Information, Defence and Women Affairs as well as some members of the National Assembly from the state. More towns in Mambilla under attack Meanwhile, reports from Taraba said more towns on Mambilla were attacked by suspected Mambilla militia. Daily Trust gathered that Maisamari, Yelwa, Tunga and Kassa Sa villages were attacked on Sunday and several persons killed. Our reporter who was in the area saw several houses and vehicles burning. The injured were taken to General Hospital Gembu while police and relatives of those killed are searching for dead bodies. The road leading to Jalingo from the area was also blocked for several hours by the attackers until around 3pm when a team of soldiers and police cleared the roads. At Kassa Sa village located few kilometres from Kakara Tea company which was attacked by Suspected Mambilla militia, four people were killed and about 20 others still missing. A leader of the village, Mallam Aliyu Mohammed, told our reporter that the attacks was unprovoked as there was no dispute with those that attacked their community. He said one vehicle, two motorcycles and other properties worth millions of naira were burnt by the attackers. Our reporter also saw additional police and soldiers arriving the area at about 5pm while the atmosphere was tense in the entire Mambilla plateau even as hundreds of people have fled the area. The Fulani community in the area alleged that attacks being launched by Mambilla militia against them was supported by some key politicians and elite. ‘No one prosecuted yet’ A prominent member of Fulani community in Mambilla plateau, Ardo Yakubu, alleged that the militia were supported and protected because up till now no single person was arrested and prosecuted for the atrocities they committed. They appealed to the federal and Taraba state governments to urgently deploy more security to protect lives and property in the area. One of the Fulani leaders, Alhaji Bello Shadari, made the appeal during an interview with Daily Trust in Gembu adding that there were many Fulani communities being attacked across the area on daily basis. He said most areas were inaccessible by security due to difficult terrain and the attackers were taking this advantage. Shadari said within the last five days about 30 Fulani communities around Kakara, Leme and Yarimaru were attacked. He said in one community about 20 persons were missing following Mambilla militia attack, adding that the missing persons were still being searched for. The community leader blamed the continued attacks on the community on the failure of relevant authorities to arrest perpetrators and prosecute them. He said the crisis in Yelwa and Maisamari on Sunday was as a result of killing of three elderly Fulani by Mambilla. The community leader commended the effort of both army and the police and other security agents for working toward restoring peace and called for posting of security agents into the hinterland to prevent attacks on innocent persons. The police spokesperson, ASP David Misal, when contacted on telephone said he will not say anything on the issue, adding that “we are in the field waiting for the arrival of Mr President. I can’t comment on this issue now.” Refugees commission donates 406 cows, other items to victims The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has distributed 406 cows and assorted relief materials worth millions of Naira to victims of June 2017 Mambilla attacks. He also appealed for assistance to those who became widows and orphans as a result of the June 2017 attacks and facilitation of the return of victims who were still taking refuge in neighbouring Republic of Cameroon Latest report said more Fulani villages and settlements were attacked last night in the area by suspected Mambilla militia men leading to killings and destruction of houses. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/more-people-killed-in-taraba-than-benue-zamfara-buhari.html |
The unveiling of members of the new group that emerged in the Senate has upset the camp of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Daily Trust gathered. Daily Trust had last week exclusively reported the emergence of the group as a result of the crisis that trailed the passage of the reordered election sequence. It was gathered the roll call of the group was unveiled at a meeting late Thursday night held at the residence of a former governor who is a senator. An impeccable source in the group said the group has been christened, “Pro Buhari Senators”. He said the agenda of the group was to champion Buhari’s cause and rebel against any legislation or act targeted at him. The membership of the group has been leaked to the Saraki camp, but was requested not to be made public, hence the apprehension. The source said they had 11 senators in the Southwest, 4 in South south, 2 in Southeast, 3 in North central, 11 in Northwest and 9 in Northeast. In all, he said they have 40 senators. However, one of the names mentioned in the list told our correspondent that he had never attended any meeting of the group. He said he was wary of participating because of the attitude of the president towards the legislature. But a senator in Saraki’s camp punctured the claim of the group, saying the rebels are in minority. He advised the rebel group to turn a new leaf by supporting the leadership of the Senate to strengthen the legislative arm of government. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/saraki-s-camp-kicks-as-rebel-group-unveils-members.html

Daily Trust: Could you please share with us your childhood educational pursuits? Basheer Isah Dodo: I am the son of a retired judge and my mother is a retired school teacher, both from Katsina. I started my early childhood in Kaduna. When they relocated to Katsina, they enrolled me in Ulul-Albab Science Secondary School Katsina in year 2000. I started my degree programme in Computer Science at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina before transferring for my bachelor’s degree in Malaysia and graduated with a BSc.(Hons) degree in Software Engineering. I obtained Masters of Science in Computer Systems Engineering or (software systems) in 2011 and 2013 respectively from the University of East London, UK in collaboration with Malaysian universities. DT: Who is your role model? Dodo: My father. He always believes that if someone can do it, so can you. He also taught me the value of not giving up just because it seems hard or unachievable. He also had a basic principle, you can play with a lot of things, but never you play with education, be it religious or western. I hold on to this principle. DT: What motivated you to further your studies up to this level? Dodo: I like picking up challenges and exploring what lies beyond. Also, I wanted to improve my own skills so as to better support those I teach. I have also got a lot of encouragement from my parents and in-laws. DT: How did you achieve the feat? Dodo: I presented my team’s work, which aims to ease the work of eye specialists. The work is a computer program which identifies layers of the retina. This makes the eye diagnosis task of ophthalmologists easier and better, because manual segmentation is not only time-consuming but also depends on the level of expertise of the manual grader. Compared to other sophisticated and complex existing methods, our approach is conceptually viable, and adapts more to structural inconsistencies of retinal optical coherence images. DT: Did you get any scholarship from other sources? Dodo: Yes, I was sponsored by the federal government through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND). However, some colleagues and I can be said to have been abandoned on this mission and left to find our ways through to the finish line. DT: Has the federal government contacted you after achieving this feat? Dodo: No, they have not. DT: Has any foreign firm or institution contacted you? Dodo: I have been contacted by one, with the intention of looking at the feasibility of implementation in Nigeria. However, it is at a very early stage. DT: Was there any collaboration with others on your work? Dodo: I am the first author, and other authors are from my supervisory team. DT: Was there any such thing as people trying to distract you, thinking you were day dreaming? Dodo: If you keep your eyes on the prize, you will usually forget about all distractions of this sort as you were preoccupied with your work and its challenges. External threats tend to become motivation-boosters for you to work harder. So I would say I focus on my work, because I have the support of my family. And also my train of thought is guided and supported by previous works. DT: How do you want to pay back to Nigeria? Dodo: I am an Assistant Lecturer at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina, and will hopefully come back someday to lecturing, even if at a different institution. I believe there is no better way than training others to hopefully become better than me. I would appreciate researching in fields that are very specific and focused in the Nigerian context. Because technology on its own doesn’t provide solutions, you have to tailor it towards your problems for efficient implementation. DT: Would you like to carry out more research in the future? Dodo: I would like to continue on my current research because of its significance, and my other research interests include software engineering and big data analytics. The sole purpose is we have a lot to benefit from tech, especially in Nigeria where many systems require automation. DT: What is your advice to younger Nigerians? Dodo: They should wake up from their slumber. No one will benefit from improvements made to the country than them, and none can really strive to make it a place they dream of better than them. This is because, as we grow older, our priorities and views change, and the view of the elderly is unlike that of the youth. Our youth have to strive for knowledge and with this they will not be used for political atrocities. This will also mean they can elect leaders wisely, and hold them responsible for things not going according to plans. I strongly believe Nigeria is a great country, and with youths from all angles and sectors coming together it will be great again. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/meet-nigerian-student-who-broke-record-in-england.html
