Politics / Name Traditional Rulers Aiding Bandits, Katsina Residents Tell FG by JosEast(m): 8:36am On Jun 16, 2020
* We’re deliberating on the matter – Katsina Emirate

* ‘Stop the blame game’

People in Katsina yesterday tasked the federal government to reveal the names of the traditional rulers who are allegedly aiding banditry in the state.

They said it would amount to “shifting blame” if relevant authorities did not name, arrest and prosecute the traditional rulers found complicit in the protracted insecurity in Katsina and the rest of the North West that has claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands.

Community leaders and locals in areas prone to attacks by bandits in Katsina told the Daily Trust yesterday that it was necessary to reveal the identities of those supporting banditry to avert mutual suspicion.

The call came in the wake of a revelation by Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity.

Shehu, while speaking on Sunrise Daily, a programme of Channels Television, yesterday, said some traditional rulers help bandits escape whenever security operatives were planning to attack them.

He said: “It is not that we are making direct accusations on anyone but it is also true that even in the president’s native state of Katsina, some traditional rulers have been found complicit in collaboration with the bandits to harm their own people. “In neighbouring Zamfara, emirs and district heads, quite a number of them have been swept out of office.

The thing is there are beneficiaries of whatever rotten system you have. “At some point, the Nigerian Air Force had to put a number of aircraft in Katsina, they are still there. In the early part of that operation attacking Zamfara, which then was the epicentre.

“They realised that once an aircraft took off from Katsina airport, before it got to Zamfara for operation, telephone calls would have been made and targets would have disappeared. In the end, we were forced to be flying from distant places like Kaduna and Kano in order to undertake operations in Zamfara,” he said.

Garba Shehu added that it was the responsibility of all to secure Nigeria and not the exclusive preserve of those vested with political power. “All of us as citizens have a duty to the nation to provide information to our armed forces,” he said.

When contacted, Abdu Labaran Malumfashi who is the spokesman of Governor Aminu Bello Masari said they will not talk on the recent twist. “There is no comment,” he said. It would be recalled that Governor Masari recently said they have decided to stop negotiating with bandits because they (bandits) have serially betrayed the agreements reached with the government including the amnesty granted them.

Daily Trust reports that in neighbouring Zamfara State, some traditional rulers have been deposed by government for their alleged role in banditry and kidnapping.

Politics / Naira Marley Mistaken For Works Minister, Fashola, Says Airline by JosEast(m): 8:25am On Jun 16, 2020
Executive Jet Services, the airline suspended by the Federal Government for ferrying Nigerian musician, Azeez Fashola, also known as Naira Marley, from Lagos to Abuja has cleared air on the controversial flight, saying it was a case of mistaken identity.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the airline, Mr. Sam Iwuajoku, explained that the airline was misled that the flight was operated to airlift Minister of Works, Mr. Babatunde Fashola and not the popular musician.

He, therefore, apologized to the Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika.

There had been outrage when video emerged of Naira Marley disembarking from the plane on landing in Abuja while he also hosted a concert at Jabi Lake Mall despite the interstate lockdown and flight restriction.

Sirika had, at the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Monday, announced the suspension of the airline for ferrying the musician when the permit granted to it was to fly a Court of Appeal Judge to Abuja and back to Lagos on a special assignment.

The Minister had said: “The flight, from the application was to convey Hon. Justice Adefope Okoji from Lagos to Abuja and back to Lagos, for an official assignment. “And in this challenging time, in our wisdom, we considered judiciary to be part of essential services to be delivered. “Having to move the Hon. Justice from Lagos to Abuja, was in order.”

But it was learnt that when the judge whom the special flight was originally approved for was contacted, he reportedly notified the airline that he was already in Abuja on a different flight. However, another request was made to the airline for a Lagos-Abuja-Lagos flight.

According to the passenger manifest dated June 13, 2020, the Lagos-Abuja-Lagos flight conveyed to Abuja: Adewunmi Segun, Chinonso Opara, Fashola Babatunde, Fashola Adeshina and Adeyeye Tobi. Others were: Michael Opeyemi, Idowu Emmanuel, Seyi Awonuga, Wisdom Intoto and Abayomi Akin.

According to the Chairman, there was no indication from the names in the manifest that Naira Marley was part of the flight. He said it was assumed that the Minister of Works and Housing was actually the person that was travelling. In addition, it was the approval already secured for the airlift of Justice Adefope Okoji, who was already in Abuja that was used to fly Babatunde, who later turned out to be Naira Marley and his entourage.

In a letter of apology to the Minister, signed by the Chairman/CEO of the company, Executive Jet Services explained: “So on Saturday morning, 13th June, 2020 my staff called and told me that they have a charter flight to Abuja and that the passengers were already at the lounge.

“As a rule, passenger manifest is always sent to me before any departure. “When I went through the manifest and I saw Fashola Babatunde, I thought it was the Hon. Minister of Works going to Abuja with his men, so we decided to do the flight, since he is serving Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Politics / Oyo Reopens Schools For Final Year Students by JosEast(m): 11:11pm On Jun 15, 2020
The Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force, on Monday, announced the resumption of classes for Primary Six pupils as well as Junior Secondary School III and Senior Secondary School III students from June 29.

The Chairman of the task force, Gov. Seyi Makinde also announced the relaxation of the curfew imposed on the state, following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

The curfew will now run from 10 pm. to 4 am. as against the earlier period of 8 pm. to 5 am. “The schools are to observe the COVID-19 protocols as released by the taskforce; schools are to provide hand washing points, with the support of Parent/Teachers’ Associations (PTA), while all students are to compulsorily wear face masks.

“Students in critical classes are to resume at the end of June to ensure that they are well-prepared for the public examinations ahead of them. “This resumption of critical classes at the end of June will be two clear weeks ahead of the state’s drop-dead date of July 15. “By that date, it will be decided whether other categories of students will return to the class,” the governor said. He, however, said that the resumption order did not affect the tertiary institutions in the state, for now, adding that the taskforce would review their case and determine their state of readiness.

Makinde also directed all categories of state workers to resume work on June 22. The state secretariat was closed on March 27 as part of the measures to check the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, but reopened on April 27 to workers on grade level 13 and above.

“Other decisions taken by the taskforce include opening up of mosques and churches, which are to operate at 25 percent capacity. “Also the decision to limit public gathering to 25 persons was taken at the meeting,’ he said. Makinde, who stated that the reopening of religious centres would be reviewed within the first two weeks, directed that worshippers must wear face masks.

The task force, however, announced that night clubs would still remain shut. The governor warned that the task force would not mind shutting everywhere, if evidence emerged that the COVID-19 safety protocols were violated or there was an explosion in the number of COVID-19 cases in the state.

He promised that his government would intensify enlightenment campaigns to ensure the safety of the people of the state.

Religion / I Will Not Rest In Prayers Until Rapists Are Brought To Justice — Adeboye by JosEast(m): 4:11pm On Jun 14, 2020
The General Overseer (GO) of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, says he and his prayer warriors will not rest in prayers until the perpetrators of rape are accorded stiffer penalty.

Adeboye said during a live programme on DOVE TV, monitored in Ibadan on Sunday, that the issue of rape has become rampant in the society. Gombe records 26 rape cases in 4 months RCCG Pastor Adeboye protests insecurity in Nigeria He described rape as bad, stressing that that it could leave a permanent scare on the victim for the rest of her life. According to him, there is no pain that can be compared to the pain on the parents whose daughter had been raped.

“Myself and prayer warriors will not rest in prayers until the perpetrators of this evil are brought to justice, not only in Nigeria but all over the world. “Everyone who has ever committed rape, particularly in Nigeria and the world, the all-knowing God will fish them. “As much as I hate death sentence, I think every form of punishment that will be given to a rapist cannot be considered too severe.

“Anyone, who ever thinks of raping someone again, the almighty God will stop them even before they do so and if they insist God will take them away.

“I am calling on every Christian all over the world to please join me in this prayer,” he said. Adeboye also urged the faithful never to embrace the spirit of ‘good enough’ because it could be an enemy of greatness. “Your journey to the top begins when you start sensing that what you call ‘good’ is not enough; the greatest enemy is when you think that you are already great while you are still incomplete.

“Your journey to the top begins when you become aware that God reserves the best till the last; the journey to the top begins from your knees and acknowledging Christ as your lord and saviour,”

he said. He, therefore, urged those who had not surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ to do so in order to reach the desired place of destiny God had designed for them.

Politics / NNPC Contractors Cry Out Over Nonpayment Of Salaries by JosEast(m): 6:15am On Jun 14, 2020
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline surveillance and security contractors have cried over the nonpayment of their salaries for 10 by UTM Offshore Limited. Some of the workers, who spoke exclusively to our reporter but pleaded anonymity, said that as a result of the situation, life had become very difficult for them. “Life has been difficult and frustrating.

Throughout Easter celebration, we didn’t get anything. In this COVID-19 period, we have not gotten any palliative from anybody. We don’t have gloves or protective wears, yet we are expected to work. “Some of the workers find it difficult to pay their children’s school fees. When their children fall sick, it is difficult for them to buy drugs for them or even take them to hospital for treatment. Some of us go borrowing in order to sustain our lives,” one of them said.

The man also said that unfortunately, their fellow workers accuse them of collecting money for their salaries and depositing in their bank accounts for selfish interests. He said, “Those workers suspect us a lot. They think we have been paid but decided to deposit the money in our personal accounts to yield interest for us. But the truth is that we have not been paid. At times, the workers confront us physically. Some of us go borrowing to sustain ourselves. It is a painful experience.”

A female contractor said, “It is very difficult to cope without being paid for many months. It is even more difficult for the workers we employed. This is because they are at the receiving end. They are the people that suffer most. “Can you imagine a situation in which a man leaves the house for work but he is not paid for several months? His wife and children will begin to make mockery of him. Each time the workers have problems they still have to run to us as if we were the cause of the situation at hand. “The problem is telling on our integrity. It is unfortunate that you employ people but can’t pay them. It has even made some of the workers to leave. That’s the experience we are having; and it has not been pleasant.”

The security men, otherwise known as service providers/security guards contractors, who monitor petroleum pipelines from Ishiagu in Ebonyi State to Emene in Enugu State, also gave UTM Offshore Limited, the major contractor, a seven-day ultimatum to pay their 10-month salary arrears or be ready for whatever action they would take within the ambit of the law. In a protest letter to the company’s chairman/chief executive officer, dated June 2, 2020 and signed by their counsel, J. I. Olinya, the surveillance contractors asked why UTM Offshore would continue to owe them. They said their counterparts in the western and northern parts of the country had been paid their entitlements up to date.

According to them, through their services, the NNPC was able to move petroleum products from Port Harcourt to Enugu depot, after over 15 years the depot was abandoned. Also, in a letter our correspondent obtained on Saturday, the security providers appealed to the NNPC to prevail on their contractors to pay them their salaries.

The letter was entitled, “Protest on Refusal/Non-payment of 10 months Arrears of salary for service providers/security guards contractors of the petroleum pipeline, leading through Ishiagu-Ebonyi State to Emene, Enugu State by UTM Offshore Limited.’’ Parts of the letter read, “The service providers/security guards contractors appreciate the NNPC for finding UTM Offshore Limited worthy for the award of such contract.

“They are also happy and confident that UTM as a company performed creditably in the cause of delivering its service to the NNPC, by bringing to life and operation, the Port Harcourt-Enugu petroleum pipeline, which was in a moribund state, abandoned and forgotten, prior to the contractual intervention of the UTM.

Politics / Obaseki Is Not A Member Of Our Party — PDP by JosEast(m): 10:07am On Jun 13, 2020
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has said that Governor Godwin Obaseki is not a member of the party ‘as at today’. The chairman of the party in Edo state, Hon. Tony Aziegbemi disclosed this on Saturday during a popular programme, ‘The Weekend Show’ on Africa Independent Television, AIT.

The former member of the House of Representatives noted that Obaseki has not joined the PDP as at Saturday. “As we speak, His Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki has not joined the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,” he said.

However, he said the party will welcome Obaseki if he decides to join the PDP after he was disqualified by the All Progressives Congress, APC from participating in the forthcoming primary of the party.

Hon. Aziegbemi added that Obaseki will not be able to participate in the party’s primary except the National Working Committee of PDP grants him a waiver.

He maintained that Obaseki will not get automatic ticket, even, if granted waiver by the NWC, stressing that he will have to battle it out with other governorship aspirants in the party.

Politics / Probe Annulment Of 1993 Poll, Balarabe Musa, Aremu Urge Buhari by JosEast(m): 6:17am On Jun 13, 2020
A former governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa and labour leader, Comrade Issa Aremu, have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to go beyond recognising June 12 as Democracy Day and investigate the annulment of the 1993 election. Addressing a joint press conference to mark June 12 in Kaduna yesterday, they said those who annulled the June 12, 1993 election were responsible for the many challenges Nigeria is currently facing, and should be punished.

Balarabe Musa while commending President Buhari for surprising the nation by honouring MKO Abiola, said he should complete the task by investigating the circumstances leading to the annulment.

“If Buhari does not go further and do this, anybody can do same thing like Babangida who annulled June 12 and got away with it, up till now, he (Babangida) is getting away it. We must make sure that does not happen.

“We must also do something fundamental, that is changing the, socio-economic and political and cultural system controlling all development kin this country.

And the way we can effectively do it is by making sure that Nigeria embarks on socialist reconstruction,” he said. He however noted that such feat cannot be achieved under the present system of government, but by reverting to the defunct regional government.

Comrade Issa Aremu said the public apology tendered by President Buhari to Nigerians and the family of MKO Abiola over the annulment is a verbal punishment of those who annulled the election.

Aremu said Abiola earned the deserved posthumous honour conferred on him last year and the National Stadium Abuja being renamed after him considering that he was referred to as the pillar of sports in Africa.

He however said that honoring Abiola should be more than renaming monuments, but that Nigeria must deepen democracy he fought and died for.

“We must democratize the public space and rescue the country from the total capture and dominance of a few unaccountable self serving ruling elite. We must eradicate poverty as envisioned by Abiola,” he said.

Politics / Leaked Presidency Memo At TCN Raises Dust by JosEast(m): 6:30am On Jun 07, 2020
An alleged leakage of official documents concerning the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) at the Presidency is generating controversy after some members of the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) said top government officials were plotting the reinstatement of the ousted managing director of the company.

The association said in a statement on Thursday that the former managing director, Mr. Usman Gur Mohammed, had been meeting prominent citizens to solicit for return to his former post.

“Two of such prominent people are the president of African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, and the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed. We learnt with doubt that the AfDB president wrote the president tying loans to the appointment of an individual, Usman Mohammed.

“On the side of the minister (Zainab Ahmed), she was said to have agreed that the loan was needed even with an appointment tied to it. What an irrational proposition, if true,” said a statement issued by the association’s General Secretary, Umar Dubagari.

Our correspondent gathered that a section of the national level of the association is led by Chris Okonkwo, a member of the management staff of TCN whom the ousted managing director had removed from office after allegedly ending his four-year posting from the Ministry of Power to TCN.

The issue had raised tension at TCN shortly before Mohammed was summarily removed by the Minister of Power, Engineer Sale Mamman, after he got an approval from President Muhammadu Buhari through a series of correspondents from the president’s Chief of Staff.

On how the union got the information on which their statement was based, it was learnt from multiple sources that the Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, had forwarded the letter of the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning to President Muhammadu Buhari with the attached letter of the president of AfDB to Engr. Mamman for his comment.

The documents, which were termed to be classified and awaited presidential action, may have been leaked in that process to the section of the union led by Okonkwo.

A top official in the power sector said: “The minister finding any fault with the TCN head, should have in the first instance, issued him a query or asked him to step down for a panel of enquiry as guided by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) who is empowered to issue appointment and dismissal letters to government appointees.

“The minister only acted through a press release without recourse to the SGF. As we speak, no letter has been given to the acting MD of TCN and his management team, or a dismissal letter to the ousted MD, nearly three weeks after,” the official explained. “The minister also knows that it was the federal government that had requested that Mohammed come to TCN on secondment from AfDB, and as such AfDB reserves the right to ask questions if that official on such critical assignment in Nigeria is summarily removed from office. This is also a spite on the presidency’s request for the official from the bank and the formal approval for his secondment to TCN by AfDB.”

Politics / Surrender Or Face Violent End, Buhari Warns Bandits by JosEast(m): 10:46pm On Jun 06, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari has warned bandits to either surrender their weapons, or face “disgraceful and violent ends’’. President Buhari gave the warning on Thursday night during a meeting at the State House, Abuja, with Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State.

The President, in a statement issued on Saturday by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, said bandits, who had committed crimes against innocent citizens in the state, and across the country, would not be spared. He said more decisive military operations against bandits in Zamfara, Sokoto, Niger, Katsina and Kaduna States would be undertaken.

He assured people and government of Katsina State of renewed efforts, and review of operations, to improve the security of lives and property in the state, and other parts of the country.

Buhari used the opportunity to condole with Gov Masari over the loss of lives from attacks by bandits, which included District Head of Yantumaki, Atiku Maidabino, and APC Chairman in Batsari Local Government Council, Abdulhamid Sani Duburawa.

The Sokoto State Taskforce Committee on COVID-19 has discharged all 101 isolated coronavirus patients in the state and recorded 14 deaths. The Committee’s Chairman, Dr Ali Inname, who disclosed this at a news conference in Sokoto said that as of Friday there was no patient at the isolation centre in the state.

COVID-19 : Expert warns against overdose of vitamin C What we miss about pre- COVID-19 life Inname added that the index case was recorded on April 19, in the state, with 731 samples collected, while 655 contacts completed the 14 days of follow up. The chairman who is also the state’s Commissioner for Health, explained that the committee received 839 alerts from across the state and that all of them were investigated.

He said that the patients were from eight local government areas of the state. According to him, men constituted 85 per cent of the patient population. He said that the committee’s activities would continue as many test results were still pending.

He added that testing of suspected patients would continue, stressing that any positive person detected would be taken to the isolation centre. In name, therefore, urged people to continue to patronise hospitals as service delivery had fully resumed in recognition of the fact that access to healthcare had declined due to the pandemic.

The commissioner also advised people to abide by the safety guidelines of wearing face masks, constant washing of hands with soap, and using sanitisers as well as observing physical distance, among others. (NAN)

Crime / ‘four Men Drugged, Gang-raped 13-yr-old Girl In Kaduna’ by JosEast(m): 5:11pm On Jun 05, 2020
A 13-year-old girl has allegedly been gang-raped in Kaduna by four men who drugged her and later dumped her underneath a parked vehicle near her home. The state’s Ministry of Human Services and Social Development revealed this late Thursday.
