PLANTING AVOCADOS Avocado are a little different from the rest seedlings when planting, the holes and how deep you place the seedlings are the most important investment. Well draining soil - Note that avocados need deep loose soil and if you don't provide such condition, be rest assured you are wasting effort. Most people do make mistake of digging a very big hole, remove the soil and then plant the seedling down there, that one is VERY WRONG!!!!!!!!! HERE ARE WHAT TO DO - Provide a 3ft x 3ft x 3ft hole - Mix top soil with manure roughly 50-50 ratio should be fine - Before returning the soil with manure. Look for leaves, grass etc and place them at the bottom of the hole, then return the soil back to the hole until it's about to be filled, then plant your seedling. - [Ensure you don't cover the stem beyond where it reached in the seedling nylon bag/tube] - Very important to note is that avocados don't like water logging. Don't leave a hole that will retain stagnant water, this will lead to rotting of the plants. - Space your plant at about 5-6 metres apart. Rough Estimate on Irrigation: One acre is 6 plots and 4000 meters of 60 cm spaced drip covers it, so it is safe to estimate 10,000 meters for 1 hectare (15 plots). |
