Travel / Re: What To Do If The Pilot Passes Out And You Have To Land A Plane by JPTechnology: 9:52am On Oct 26, 2015

So—your pilot passed out. The good news is the plane will probably have a sophisticated autopilot that can take care of most of the flying for you. The bad news is you will still probably have to land the damn thing. And since every aircraft cockpit is going to be different, it's not like you'd know exactly where to look to find the things you need.

Let's take an example aircraft—yep, you guessed it—the 737. The first thing you're going to want to do is put on the pilot's headset and find the pilot's audio controls. They'll look like this:

Note that there are three of these—one for a pilot, a copilot, and an observer. The one closest to you is the pilot's. Make sure VHF-1 is selected in the MIC SELECTOR button group. Otherwise you'll just be talking to your passengers—and chances are they sure as hell won't be able to help.

Chances are whatever frequency is dialed in will work, so just hold down the push-to-talk button on the yoke, and tell ATC your situation:

It's labeled here as "microphone intercomm switch."

Now, ATC is probably going to give you headings and altitudes to fly. These can be dialed into the autopilot's mode control panel (MCP), which is at the very top of the dashboard, along the glareshield:

First, make sure the autopilot is engaged by verifying that either the CMD A or CMD B buttons are lit. Press either one if not. To fly a heading, dial the heading into the HDG window and press the HDG SEL button to enable "heading select" lateral mode.

To climb or descend to an altitude, dial the altitude into the ALTITUDE window and select the LVL CHG button to set "level change" vertical mode. Once the aircraft captures that altitude, it should automatically activate ALT HOLD (altitude hold) mode.

ATC may also want you to slow down in preparation for landing. To control speed, select the SPEED autothrottle mode, dial the airspeed (in knots) you want to fly, and verify that the A/T ARM (autothrottle arm) switch is on. If the autothrottle is having trouble slowing the aircraft down (say, due to a descent), you can give it some assistance by deploying the speed brakes. When this handle is pulled back...

As the aviation fare especially for local travels becomes more affordable, more Nigerians are now taking the air route. And so, just like its obtainable for travels by road, I thought it necessary to share this piece of info where emergency situations will require you handle the rest of the journey.

Beesluv:
Na wao, where is my Zain line

And you think Zain/Airtel is any better?
Their 300-to-1000 is so dubious!

I was once on a plan that allowed me make a call for 11k per second. Later on I kept receiving their adverts asking me to recharge N300 to get N1000. After so much pestering, I decided to give it a shot, thinking I could make more calls with that package.

Ordinarily, with an 11k per second billing I could make 45mins call with N300 (N295 actually because of their daily N5 charge). So I thought to my self: 'instead of making 45mins call with N300, why not take advantage of the 300-to-1000 Naira package to get a whooping 2hours 30mins call?!' shocked cheesy You go fear awoof naa.

So I recharged N300 and successfully subscribed to this new package. Then I decided to make a long call to a close friend of mine; only for my call to be terminated after 29mins. Initially,I thought it was a network failure. I had to redial the number. But it never connected again. To be sure, i had to recharge some amount on my line; lo and behold, my calls began to connect. I noticed this same trend on other occasions i subscribed for the 300-to1000 Naira package. Then I concluded that I'VE BEEN SCAMMED!!

I called their Call Center to find out how much is charged per min (or per second) on this plan. None, I mean NONE of the agents agreed to tell me. They all claimed they didn't know the call rates.

I was so puzzled because even with a call rate of 20k per sec, N300 will earn me 25mins. I could only imagine the call rate that earned me a paltry 29mins with the so-called N1000.

What a Rip-Off!!

Phones / Re: Li-fi Gets Ready To Compete With Wi-fi by JPTechnology: 10:17am On Oct 21, 2015
It's a laudable initiative. More laudable is the idea of deploying the photo-system in industrial areas rather than for home or domestic use because of the cancerous hazards associated with Light Emitting Diodes.

But then, no matter the anticipated higher data rate it could provide as compared to Wi-Fi , I'd rather the domestic users restricted to the Wi-Fi Micro-Wave technology, if there is lesser cancerous risks associated to it than is associated in Li-Fi Technology.
