Technology Market / Re: Which Inverter And Battery Should I Purchase? by Judejibs: 2:07pm On Oct 28, 2015
With 100k - 120k, am looking at getting an inverter with a battery (or two) that'd

- last long in service
- carry a standing fan, energy saver bulb and charge my devices such as: laptop and phones
- do I need a charge controller?
- what capacity best suits the stuffs I mentioned above (fan, bulb, and charging of devices)?

Went thru JUMIA and saw a 2.4KVa inverter from Mercury, so I ask,
- can this serve the purpose?
- is Mercury a trusted brand?
- what battery capacity do I buy for this? One 200Ah or two 200Ah SMF batteries?
- what's the inverter types? pure sine wave, modified sine wave?
- Are inverters built for gen/phcn alone and for solar alone? If yes, how do I differentiate them?

Kindly lecture me on the above listed guys, thanks...

-Mercury Inverter is ok, it is a high freuency inverter hence will work well for the equipments you listed.mind you it is a 1.4kW inverter hence dont load it beyond that 1.2kW.
-It has a charge current of 10/20A, it is a 24 system considering the amount you plan on, I advice you get 2 batteries of either 65AH or 40AH to ensure proper charging.
-Mercury 2.4 inverter is a pure sine wave inverter
-Inverters are built to convert DC to AC(Direct current to Alternating current), the gen/phcn is to enable supply to your loads while taking a little current to charge your batteries
-For solar, it is basically for charging your batteries while you use them(with the help of a charge regulator.
-you can buy FullRiver Batteries directly from the distributors www.idyllictechnologies.com call 08030675747

Inverters have over the years become a household name, with many people clamoring for one to be installed for them. Inverters generally used in renewable energy systems change the DC (direct current) energy from 12, 24, 48 VDC (batteries) to 240 VAC AC (alternating current) for use in residential, industrial, institutions or commercial applications. A wide range of inverters are marketed and the model that should be selected is truly dependent on the application.
Apart from the technology different manufacturers use to change this DC to AC current, before selecting an inverter bear in mind the following: inverters can be broken down into two main categories – modified sine wave and pure sine wave inverters.

1.The output voltage wave of a pure sine wave is with very low harmonic distortion and clean power like standard utility supplied electricity (PHCN). In practical terms, Modified Sine Wave Inverters will power most appliance and tools but not the sensitive appliances while Pure Sine Wave Inverters offer electricity much like mains or utility power and are required for sensitive electronic and electrical items.

Apart from the wave form produced by the inverter, the second significant difference for users of inverters in renewable or autonomous power systems to consider is whether the inverter includes an automatic, built-in battery charger. These inverter/chargers are typical of back-up power systems where conventional grid power or a back-up generator operates in parallel with an inverter to power devices in the event of a power failure.
Power rating
The power that inverter can deliver is the basis of comparison since it is the main criteria for choosing an inverter. Inverters are generally sized according to the power they can deliver, often expressed as “watts” their specifications may also be shown in Volt-Amps (VA). This is the result of the product between the voltage (in volts) and the amperage or current (in amps).
The unit of measurement to compare the real or usable power of an inverter is the Watt. Power (Watts) = Apparent Power (VA) x Power Factor. It is necessary to know the power factor of the inverter or the efficiency of the inverter. This value between zero and one can be found in the specifications or technical data of each inverter.
Another factor is the charger: Inverters without built-in battery chargers are often used in systems that already have an external battery charger or they may use a solar, wind or microhydro system for battery charging. Inverters in this category typically range in output size of between 75 watts and 3000 watts and are used in light duty applications. In other words, unless that inverter you’re buying is named Inverter/Charger then know you are just buying an inverter system without an industrial charger and your battery will probably suffer and not last. [b]How solar PV cells work
Photovoltaic (PV) cells convert sunlight into electricity. In most PV cells, light energy (photons) excites the electrons in the atoms of a semi-conducting material (for example silicon). The energized electrons then generate an electrical voltage.
The amount of electricity a solar PV system generates depends on the intensity of the sunlight it’s exposed to. Solar PV works in all regions but it works best in sunny areas. Solar PV also generates electricity on cloudy days, but less so than with direct sunlight. Solar PV panels generate no electricity at night.
Solar PV cells are usually quite small, so lots are joined together to create a PV panel. These panels can then be grouped together into solar PV arrays.
PV systems usually include:
• PV panels, cables, and mounting or fixing hardware
• an inverter (that converts direct current from the PV panels into alternating current) and controller
• an batteries for storage of energy generated during the day for use at night..
Energy output of solar PV systems
Each solar PV panel is rated on its peak electrical output. For example, a panel with a 75 watts (W) peak rating (75 Wp) will have an output of 75 W under test conditions. A well placed panel usually generates 2.5 to 5 times its rated power output. So a 1 kWp panel can produce 2.5 kWh (kilowatt hours) to 5 kWh per day, or between 880 kWh and 1750 kWh per year.
Panels are usually available from 5 Wp to 300 Wp. A typical domestic solar PV system would be 1,500 Wp to 3,000 Wp, so you’ll have to buy a number of panels and connect them in an array to get the energy output that you need.
Where to place PV panels
Solar PV panels are suitable in both rural and urban conditions. Panels are usually installed on roofs but you can also place them on facades, conservatory roofs, sun shades, garages or specially built stands on the ground.
Make sure your site:
• faces north
• is free from shade and exposed to good sun all year
• has enough space - a typical 1 kW panel needs around 8m2.
Cost to buy and install solar PV systems
The cost of solar panels has fallen significantly in recent years as production expands and technologies improve. However do contact your Installer to learn about what hes offering you before you go ahead with that project.

@ Ebrahym, Its possible that your Inverter was programmed to work so immediately power is cut off it, has your backup time been affected by this behavior, If your backup time has been affected then two things come into play which begs the question 1. What brand of batteries are they, what is the charging current of the inverter.
Over the years I have seen people call their batteries fake whereas the inverter they are using does not supply enough current to charge these batteries. Most batteries are designed for the C/10. unfortunately most inverter manufacturers do not adhere to this and our engineers eager to make sales throw caution to the wind and go with less that that. Note: Not all Inverters can Charge a 12v 200ah battery.

I will like to hear more from you, on the nominal voltage of your inverter(12 or 24). you can call me on 08030675746.

Selecting an Inveter - Solar and Backup

The long list of many types, sizes, brands, and models of inverters are available, Choosing which one is best from such a long list can be a chore. Power output is usually the main factor, but there are many others.

There are many factors that go into selecting the best inverter (and options) for your application, especially when you get into the higher power ranges (800 watts or more). This should give you the information you need to get your selection down to what will work best for you.

Some Basics First...
Watts

The poor watt is often misunderstood. Watts are basically just a measure of how much power a device uses when turned on, or can supply. A watt is a watt - there is no such thing as "watts per hour", or "watts per day". If a something uses 100 watts, that is simply the voltage times the amps. If it draws 10 amps at 12 volts, or 1 amp at 120 volts, it is still 120 watts. A watt is defined as one Joule per second, so saying watts per hour is like saying "miles per hour per day".
Watt-hours. One thing to be careful of when choosing an inverter is the rating. Is is rated in Kva or Wattage

A watt-hour (or kilowatt hour, kWh) is simply how many watts times how many hours that is used for. This is what most people mean when they say "watts per day". If a light uses 100 watts, and it is on for 9 hours, that is 900 watt-hours. If a microwave uses 1500 watts, and runs for 10 minutes, that is 1/6th of an hour x 1500, or 250 WH. When you buy power from your the utility(PHCN) (look at your last bill), they sell it to you at so much per kWh. A kWh is a "kilowatt hour", or 1000 watts for one hour (or 1 watt for 1000 hours).
Amps
An amp is a measure of electrical current at the moment. (Amps do not come in "amps per hour" or "amps per day" either). Amps are important because it determines what wire size you need, especially on the DC (low voltage) side of an inverter. All wire has resistance, and amps flowing through a wire makes heat. If your wire is too small for the amps, you get hot wires. You can also get voltage drops in the wire if it is too small. This is not usually a good thing. An amp is defined as 1 Coulomb per second.

A Coulomb is the charge of 6.24 x 1018 electrons. Therefore, 1 Amp is equal to the charge of 6.24 x 1018 electrons passing a point in a circuit in 1 second.
Amp-Hours
Amp-hours (usually abbreviated as AH) are what most people mean when they say "amps per hour" etc. Amps x time = AH. AH are very important, as it is the main measure of battery capacity. Since most inverters run from batteries, the AH capacity determines how long you can run. for more detailed information you can contact me on 08030675746
Watts - Or What Size do I Need?
Peak Power vs Typical or Average

An inverter needs to supply two needs - Peak, or surge power, and the typical or usual power.

Surge power is the maximum power that the inverter can supply, usually for only a short time - a few seconds up to 15 minutes or so. Some appliances, particularly those with electric motors, need a much higher startup surge than they do when running. Pumps are the most common example - another common one is refrigerators (compressors).

Typical power is what the inverter has to supply on a steady basis. This is the continuous rating. This is usually much lower than the surge. For example, this would be what a refrigerator pulls after the first few seconds it takes for the motor to start up, or what it takes to run the microwave - or what all loads combined will total up to. (see our note about appliance power and/or name tag ratings on demand).

Average power would usually be much less than typical or surge, and is not usually a factor in choosing an inverter. If you run a pump for 20 minutes and a small TV for 20 minutes during a one hour period, the average might be only 300 watts, even though the pump requires 2000. Average power is only useful in estimating battery capacity needed. Inverters must be sized for the maximum peak load, and for the typical continuous load.

Power Ratings of inverters

Inverters come in size ratings all the way from 50 watts up to 50,000 watts, although units larger than 11,000 watts are very seldom used in household or other PV systems. The first thing you have to know about your inverter is what will be the maximum surge, and for how long. .

Surge: All inverters have a continuous rating and a surge rating. The surge rating is usually specified at how many watts for how many seconds. This means that the inverter will handle an overload of that many watts for a short period of time. This surge capacity will vary considerably between inverters, and different types of inverters, and even within the same brand. It may range from as little as 20% to as much s 300%. Generally, a 3 to 15 second surge rating is enough to cover 99% of all appliances - the motor in a pump may actually surge for only 1/2 second or so.

General Rules: The inverters with the lowest surge ratings are the high speed electronic switching type (the most common). These are typically from 25% to 50% maximum overload. This includes most inverters in the market, and nearly all the inexpensive inverters in the 50 to 5000 watt range. The highest surge ratings are the transformer based low-frequency switchers. This includes most Xantrex, Magnum, and Outback Power. Surge ratings on these can range up to 300% for short periods. While high frequency switching allows a much smaller and lighter unit, due to the much smaller transformers used it also reduces the surge or peak capacity.

The Power Inverter
Unless you plan on using battery power for everything, you will need a Power Inverter. Since the majority of modern conveniences all run on 220 volts AC, the Power Inverter will be the heart of your Solar Energy System. It not only converts the low voltage DC to the 220 volts AC that runs most appliances, but also can charge the batteries if connected to the utility grid or AC Generator as in the case of a totally independent stand-alone solar power system.

Square Wave power inverters :
This is the least expensive and least desirable type. The square wave it produces is inefficient and is hard on many types of equipment. These inverters are usually fairly inexpensive, 500 watts or less,Don't even consider one of these types of power inverters for a home system.
Modified Sine Wave power inverters :

This is probably the most popular and economical type of power inverter. It produces an AC waveform somewhere between a square wave and a pure sine wave. Modified Sine Wave inverters, sometimes called Quasi-Sine Wave inverters are not really expensive and work well in all but the most demanding applications and even most computers work well with a Modified Sine Wave inverter. However, there are exceptions. Some appliances that use motor speed controls or that use timers may not work quite right with a Modified Sine Wave inverter. And since more and more consumer products are using speed controls & timers, I would only recommend this type of inverter for smaller installations.

True Sine Wave power inverters :
A True Sine Wave power inverter produces the closest to a pure sine wave of all power inverters and in many cases produces cleaner power than the utility company itself. It will run practically any type of AC equipment and is also the most expensive. Many True Sine Wave power inverters are computer controlled and will automatically turn on and off as AC loads ask for service. I believe they are well worth the extra cost. The Xantrex 2500 watt power inverter has a search feature and checks every couple of seconds for anything that wants AC, then it powers up automatically. You just flick on a light switch (or whatever) and it works. When you turn off the light or the refrigerator kicks off for example, the power inverter shuts down to save battery power.
While the Modified Sine Wave inverter (sometimes called a Quasi Sine Wave inverter) is nearly half the price of a True Sine Wave inverter, I would still recommend using a True Sine Wave inverter if you want to supply automatic power to a normal home using a wide variety of electrical devices. Also, most appliances run more efficiently and use less power with a True Sine Wave inverter as opposed to a Modified Sine Wave power inverter.
Grid Tie Power Inverters
If you are connected to normal Utility company power and just want to add some Free Sun Power electricity to reduce your electric bill and you do not need a totally independent system, it is possible that a Grid Tie power inverter will suit your needs. With a Grid Tie power inverter, whatever electricity that your solar panels produce will reduce the amount supplied by the utility company, in effect lowering your bill. And, if you are producing more power than you are using, you can actually sell the extra power back to the utility company! For this type of setup a much smaller battery bank can be installed just to cover short term outages from a few minutes to an hour or two. In fact, if you don't have frequent long term power outages and don't need back-up power, then you will not need any batteries at all. (But, really, what utility company never fails?

Input voltages. Should I use a 12, 24, or 48 volt inverter?
The main consideration when deciding on the input voltage (from your battery bank) of your Inverter is the distance between your solar panel array and your battery bank. The higher the voltage, the lower the current and the smaller the (expensive) cables need to be. Of course, when you decide on a system voltage, the Solar Panels, Inverter, and Battery Bank all need to use the same voltage. More detailed information on voltage & current will be explained in the next tutorial on Power & Watts.

So it turns out you have been thinking of an alternative to your everyday purchase of Fuel for your generator, also hoping there will be a miracle soon and we have constant light. I too hope so, but in the meantime why don’t you save yourself the risk of storing fuel in gallons and think about a Power Inverter and become your own NEPA. After-all we are in the Jet age.

Are you planning to buy or upgrade your inverter in this season? Then instead of being trapped in the marketing gimmicks, understand some basic facts and do a little bit home work. Here some facts you must know before buying an inverter

Calculate your power requirements

Before going to purchase an inverter- You have to make a rough estimation of your power requirements. remember- Inverter is not a Generator.

Wattage rating of typical home appliances

Appliances Power

Fan (Ceiling) 50-75 Watts

Fan (Table) 25-50 Watts

CFL 18 Watts 18 Watts

Computer (Desktop) 80- 150 Watts

Laptop 20- 75 Watts

LCD TV (32”) 150 Watts

Refrigerator 160 – 250 Watts

Tube Light (4 Feet) 40 Watts

Starting power and running power

Starting and running power requirement of all electric appliances are different. An 18 Watts CFL takes around 25 Watts power to start and after few seconds it stabilizes to 18 Watts. Some appliances like Refrigerator, Washing Machine etc take almost double power to start as compared to the normal running power. Hence before selecting an inverter you must calculate the starting power requirement also.

Difference between VA and Watts

Often people confuse with the difference between Watts and VA ratings of inverter or other home appliances. Manufacturers use both these terms according to their requirements to confuse and mislead the consumers. Power drawn by the equipment (Power using equipment like Bulb, Fridge, Washing Machines, ACs, Stabilizers etc.) and Power generated by the equipment (Generators, Inverters, UPS etc) can be expressed in Watts or VA (Volt Ampere). In general Power generating or stabilizing equipment manufacturers use the term VA to specify their ratings and power consuming products use Watts to specify their ratings. Here comes the difference. Power in Watts is the real power drawn or supplied by an equipment, this is the real value. VA is the apparent power (more theoretical) which is obtained by multiplying the Voltage and Current drawn/supplied by an equipment. We can equate the VA and Watts ratings:

Power in Watts = Power in VA- Losses

or

Power in Watts = Power in VA x Efficiency of the equipment

The ratio of Power in Watts to Power in VA is termed as Power factor. Unfortunately manufacturers often don’t specify the power factor or efficiency in their products.

Let’s see an example. You are purchasing an inverter with 650 VA power ratings. This 650 VA indicates, it can supply 650 VA power under ideal situations( means efficiency of the inverter is 100%). If we take 80% as a typical efficiency figure, the said inverter can supply 80% of 650 = 520 Watts only. Now you can understand why inverter manufacturers only publish the VA rating on their products. If an inverter or UPS is coming without mentioning power factor, you must take a safe value of 0.6 (60%) as power factor while connecting appliances.

Digital Inverter

What is digital in inverters? First generation inverters were using power transistors as switching devices and transistorized circuitry for monitoring/controlling applications. That is an old story. Nowadays inverter technology has changed a lot. A complete transition from old square wave technology to Pure Sine wave technology with the help of advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques. Micro controllers are extensively utilized for précised monitoring and controlling applications. Switching transistors are replaced with high efficient MOSFETs.

Battery

Battery- the vital part of inverter. Performance and life of an inverter greatly depends upon battery. We can see several classifications of inverter batteries. Normally high power Lead Acid batteries are used to power inverters. Lead acid batteries are classified in to different types as per application, design, technology etc.

Battery Capacity

Capacity of a battery is expressed in terms of Ampere Hour (Ah). It indicates the rate of current a battery can supply for a given duration. If the capacity of a battery is 100 Ah, that battery can supply 100 Ampere current for 1 Hour or 1 Ampere Current for 100 Hrs, 2 Amps Current for 50 Hrs .Capacity of inverter batteries are generally 100 Ah, 150 Ah or 180 Ah 200Ah, 260 Ah up to 1660Ah

Why automotive batteries are not suitable for inverters?

Lead acid batteries used for automotive purpose are termed as “High Cycle” lead acid batteries. These batteries are designed to provide high current for a very short duration (To start the vehicles). Automotive lead acid batteries are not designed to be regularly discharged by more than 25% of their rated capacity. Here the requirement of inverter is totally different. Inverter require “Deep Cycle” type batteries to provide continuous power which can be discharged at least 50% of their rated capacity. Some good deep cycle batteries can be discharged over 80% of their capacity. Deep Cycle batteries have specially designed thick plates known as AGM to withstand frequent charging and discharging.

If you like a fit and forget inverter system or your situations don’t permit you to do periodic maintenance of batteries then go for a maintenance free battery. Let me quote one example- My friend uses Maintenance free batteries in his home because his old aged mother is living alone and she doesn’t have enough knowledge on battery maintenance. In that situation maintenance free battery the best choice.

Tubular batteries

This is the most popular segment of inverter batteries-Tubular batteries have several advantages compared to flat plate batteries. More complex design increases the manufacture cost but the high electrical efficiency and extra long life make tubular batteries suitable for both domestic and industrial applications. A good maintained tubular battery can run unto 8 years or more. Tubular batteries comparatively require less maintenance. Cost of tubular batteries can go up to double of a normal flat plate battery, however if you have a high efficiency inverter like Xantrex then go for a tubular battery, you will not regret..

Cost of tubular batteries can go up to double of a normal flat plate battery, however if you have a high efficiency inverter like Xantrex then go for a tubular battery, you will not regret..

since morning i have read with disgust all the comments coming in from all angles both on linda ikeji's blog and I begin to wonder what has brought us this far, we are so deluded that we no longer stand to reason for ourselves.
someone somewhere just took a pix of a drunk and posted it via social network and everywhere is agog with insults and blames on Nigeria Police, GEJ, GMB. is it not obvious that theres nothing linking this man to the Nigerian Police Force, for all I care Hes just a drunk fellow who is in black as I do not see any regalia associating him to the Force.
Note: I totally condemn the fact that any man should get drunk let alone be disgracing himself.

I know the critics who don't wanna think and see behind the picture will wanna attack me on this my post but i ll welcome any criticisms as we are all entitled to our personal opinions.
