Technology MarketPWM Vs MPPT Solar Charge Controllers by Judejibs(op): 12:36pm On Nov 24, 2015
A lot is being talked about Solar panels, grid tied system, grid interactive system and off grid systems, PWM, MPPT Solar Charge Controllers.

What’s the Difference between MPPT and PWM? that's is our focus for today. I am motivated to write this because of an argument that I had yesterday with a man.

The charge controller is a key component of a solar power system and specifying the best one for the system requires some analysis. Below is a quick overview.

The two types of charge controllers most commonly used in today’s solar power systems are pulse width modulation (PWM) and maximum power point tracking (MPPT). Both adjust charging rates depending on the battery's charge level to allow charging closer to the battery’s maximum capacity as well as optionally monitor battery temperature to prevent overheating.

► Comparing the Two
If maximizing charging current were the only factor considered when specifying a solar controller, everyone would use an MPPT controller. But the two technologies are different, each with it’s own advantages. The decision depends on site conditions, system components, size of pv array and load, and finally the cost for a particular solar power system.

► Temperature Conditions
An MPPT controller is better suited for colder conditions. As solar module operating temperature goes down, the Vmp1 increases. That’s because the voltage of the solar panels operating at their peak power point at Standard Testing Conditions (STC is 25C°) is about 17V while the battery voltage is about 13.5V. The MPPT controller is able to capture the excess module voltage to charge the batteries. As a result, a MPPT controller in cool conditions can produce up to 20 – 25% more charging than a PWM controller.

In comparison, a PWM controller is unable to capture excess voltage because the pulse width modulation technology charges at the same voltage as the battery. However, when solar panels are deployed in warm or hot climates, their Vmp decreases, and the peak power point operates at a voltage that is closer to the voltage of a 12V battery. There is no excess voltage to be transferred to the battery making the MPPT controller unnecessary and negating the advantage of an MPPT over a PWM.

► Array to Load Ratio
In a scenario where the solar array is large relative to the power draw from the batteries by the load, the batteries will stay close to a full state of charge. A PWM controller is capable of efficiently maintaining the system without the added expense of an MPPT controller.

► Size of the System
Low power systems are better suited to a PWM controller because:

A PWM controller operates at a relatively constant harvesting efficiency regardless of the size of the array
A PWM controller is less expensive that a MPPT, so is a more economical choice for a small system
A MPPT controller is much less efficient in low power applications. Systems 170W or higher tickle the MPPT’s sweet spot

► Type of Solar Module
Stand-alone off-grid solar modules are typically 36-cell modules and are compatible with both PWM and MPPT technologies. Some grid-tie solar modules on the market today are not the traditional 36-cells modules that are used for off-grid power systems. For example, the voltage from a 60-cell 250W panel is too high for 12-Volt battery charging, and too low for 24-Volt battery charging. MPPT technology tracks the maximum power point (thus MPPT) of these less expensive grid-tie modules in order to charge the batteries, whereas PWM does not.

► Cost
MPPT controllers are typically more expensive than PWM’s but are more efficient under certain conditions, so they can produce more power with the same number of solar modules than a PWM controller. One must then analyze the site to verify that the MPPT can indeed perform more efficiently when used in that system’s given set of conditions.

When specifying one technology over the other, the cost of the controller becomes less important than the total cost of the system. To specify a controller technology simply based of cost, be sure to perform a close analysis of realized efficiencies, system operation, load and site conditions.

SUMMARY OF COMPARISON
PWM Charge Controller
PV array & battery voltages should match
Operates at battery voltage so it performs well in warm temperatures and when the battery is almost full,
Typically recommended for use in smaller systems where MPPT benefits are minimal

MPPT Charge Controller
PV array voltage can be higher than battery voltage.
Operates above battery voltage so it is can provide “boost” in cold temperatures and when the battery is low.
150W – 200W or higher to take advantage of MPPT benefits.
Enables the use of lower cost/grid-tie PV Modules helping bring down the overall PV system cost.
Off-Grid or Grid-Tie

At Idyllic Technologies, when we select one type of charge controller over another we assess its advantages in the overall system cost. The goal is to power a system efficiently and continuously while preserving the health of the battery bank. I come today to discuss a very delicate issue which has always been the problem of Installers of Inverters and the End Users themselves.
Believe it or not your installation is as good as the battery you are using for the installation. often times people tell me that the heart of an installation is the Inverter/UPS but I always tell them that that is wrong. To me the heart of the installation is the Battery.
What is a battery, a white man once told me that battery is just Lead and Acid and that is basically true.
For every backup system (Solar UPS and Inverter), if your battery is not standard if you like spend millions in acquiring the inverter you will surely fall to square zero. little wonder when you visit some clients, they wont let you mention an inverter system before they condemn you because one installer who is ready to make quick cash has duped him by giving him batteries that are not good enough, sometimes used batteries.
In our society today what is erroneously reffered to as Inverter Battery is the 200AH battery(mind you we have two types of 200AH) one is rated for 200AH/10HR the other 200AH/20AH.I wont be going into details to explain these as that is a topic for another day and time.
I am promted to write this because of a discussion I had with a Client who returned Hes battery on the bases of warranty claim as it did not last more than 4 months. I decided to interact with him on the technical specifications of the inverter and he told me its a 2kVA inverter (mind you thats is a 1.4 inverter system) and has a charging current of 10Amps.
I shook my head and took him to the battery to show him the battery specifications, On top of the battery it is clearly written C/10. I took time to explain to him what that meant and brought out the battery brochure and we read together.
Many will argue here that the lower the current used in charging a battery the better, that, i do not dispute but do you have that time and fuel to charge at a low current(Amperage). Many installers will tell you a Xantrex inverter is a rugged inverter and batteries dont fail when used with these inverters, why you might ask and that is because it has a charger. That is why you see it labeled Inverter/Charger, same as some other good ones.
The point I am trying to make is that we take time to size our battery not only by the runtime required but also by the charging capacity of your inverter. If 10Amps go for the 100AH or 65AH. At Idyllic Technologies, the sole importer of FullRIver batteries, we always advice our customers on the best way to handle their batteries for longevity. Because the customer says he wants 24hours backup, you give him batteries but because of the huge cost of the inverter/charger that will handle such capacity, you see installers use 30Amps on a 16 battery(4*4) arrangement.
I will stop here to hear your comments in the meantime you can reach me via 08030675746 (Idyllic Technologies Limited) Be wise and let no one cheat you of your hard earned money

Technology MarketRe: Which Inverter And Battery Should I Purchase? by Judejibs: 2:07pm On Oct 28, 2015
With 100k - 120k, am looking at getting an inverter with a battery (or two) that'd

- last long in service
- carry a standing fan, energy saver bulb and charge my devices such as: laptop and phones
- do I need a charge controller?
- what capacity best suits the stuffs I mentioned above (fan, bulb, and charging of devices)?

Went thru JUMIA and saw a 2.4KVa inverter from Mercury, so I ask,
- can this serve the purpose?
- is Mercury a trusted brand?
- what battery capacity do I buy for this? One 200Ah or two 200Ah SMF batteries?
- what's the inverter types? pure sine wave, modified sine wave?
- Are inverters built for gen/phcn alone and for solar alone? If yes, how do I differentiate them?

Kindly lecture me on the above listed guys, thanks...

-Mercury Inverter is ok, it is a high freuency inverter hence will work well for the equipments you listed.mind you it is a 1.4kW inverter hence dont load it beyond that 1.2kW.
-It has a charge current of 10/20A, it is a 24 system considering the amount you plan on, I advice you get 2 batteries of either 65AH or 40AH to ensure proper charging.
-Mercury 2.4 inverter is a pure sine wave inverter
-Inverters are built to convert DC to AC(Direct current to Alternating current), the gen/phcn is to enable supply to your loads while taking a little current to charge your batteries
-For solar, it is basically for charging your batteries while you use them(with the help of a charge regulator.
-you can buy FullRiver Batteries directly from the distributors www.idyllictechnologies.com call 08030675747

Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Judejibs: 3:55pm On Oct 08, 2015
Inverters have over the years become a household name, with many people clamoring for one to be installed for them. Inverters generally used in renewable energy systems change the DC (direct current) energy from 12, 24, 48 VDC (batteries) to 240 VAC AC (alternating current) for use in residential, industrial, institutions or commercial applications. A wide range of inverters are marketed and the model that should be selected is truly dependent on the application.
Apart from the technology different manufacturers use to change this DC to AC current, before selecting an inverter bear in mind the following: inverters can be broken down into two main categories – modified sine wave and pure sine wave inverters.

1.The output voltage wave of a pure sine wave is with very low harmonic distortion and clean power like standard utility supplied electricity (PHCN). In practical terms, Modified Sine Wave Inverters will power most appliance and tools but not the sensitive appliances while Pure Sine Wave Inverters offer electricity much like mains or utility power and are required for sensitive electronic and electrical items.

Apart from the wave form produced by the inverter, the second significant difference for users of inverters in renewable or autonomous power systems to consider is whether the inverter includes an automatic, built-in battery charger. These inverter/chargers are typical of back-up power systems where conventional grid power or a back-up generator operates in parallel with an inverter to power devices in the event of a power failure.
Power rating
The power that inverter can deliver is the basis of comparison since it is the main criteria for choosing an inverter. Inverters are generally sized according to the power they can deliver, often expressed as “watts” their specifications may also be shown in Volt-Amps (VA). This is the result of the product between the voltage (in volts) and the amperage or current (in amps).
The unit of measurement to compare the real or usable power of an inverter is the Watt. Power (Watts) = Apparent Power (VA) x Power Factor. It is necessary to know the power factor of the inverter or the efficiency of the inverter. This value between zero and one can be found in the specifications or technical data of each inverter.
Another factor is the charger: Inverters without built-in battery chargers are often used in systems that already have an external battery charger or they may use a solar, wind or microhydro system for battery charging. Inverters in this category typically range in output size of between 75 watts and 3000 watts and are used in light duty applications. In other words, unless that inverter you’re buying is named Inverter/Charger then know you are just buying an inverter system without an industrial charger and your battery will probably suffer and not last. For any advice contact me on 080-30675746. im also on watsapp.

[b]How solar PV cells work
Photovoltaic (PV) cells convert sunlight into electricity. In most PV cells, light energy (photons) excites the electrons in the atoms of a semi-conducting material (for example silicon). The energized electrons then generate an electrical voltage.
The amount of electricity a solar PV system generates depends on the intensity of the sunlight it’s exposed to. Solar PV works in all regions but it works best in sunny areas. Solar PV also generates electricity on cloudy days, but less so than with direct sunlight. Solar PV panels generate no electricity at night.
Solar PV cells are usually quite small, so lots are joined together to create a PV panel. These panels can then be grouped together into solar PV arrays.
PV systems usually include:
• PV panels, cables, and mounting or fixing hardware
• an inverter (that converts direct current from the PV panels into alternating current) and controller
• an batteries for storage of energy generated during the day for use at night..
Energy output of solar PV systems
Each solar PV panel is rated on its peak electrical output. For example, a panel with a 75 watts (W) peak rating (75 Wp) will have an output of 75 W under test conditions. A well placed panel usually generates 2.5 to 5 times its rated power output. So a 1 kWp panel can produce 2.5 kWh (kilowatt hours) to 5 kWh per day, or between 880 kWh and 1750 kWh per year.
Panels are usually available from 5 Wp to 300 Wp. A typical domestic solar PV system would be 1,500 Wp to 3,000 Wp, so you’ll have to buy a number of panels and connect them in an array to get the energy output that you need.
Where to place PV panels
Solar PV panels are suitable in both rural and urban conditions. Panels are usually installed on roofs but you can also place them on facades, conservatory roofs, sun shades, garages or specially built stands on the ground.
Make sure your site:
• faces north
• is free from shade and exposed to good sun all year
• has enough space - a typical 1 kW panel needs around 8m2.
Cost to buy and install solar PV systems
The cost of solar panels has fallen significantly in recent years as production expands and technologies improve. However do contact your Installer to learn about what hes offering you before you go ahead with that project.
