Photos: 2-year-old twins & their Nigerian grandparents die in house fire in the US_Two year old twins, Amal and Israel Omijie and their Nigerian grandparents, Carolyn, 55 & Sampson Omogbo, 63 were killed after their Prince George County home caught fire yesterday night into this morning in Chillum, Maryland.
The mother of the twins, Elizabeth Omogbo, jumped from the second floor of the building when the fire started and is in a critical state in a hospital where she is receiving treatment.
The grandparents were pronounced dead at the scene while the twins were taken in critical condition to a hospital where they died. The cause is yet to be ascertained but Firefighters have not found any evidence of a smoke alarm in the home.
This incident has thrown the Nigerian community in the US into mourning. One of them identified as Festus Soho said
"When I heard the [family's name] I just jumped into my car to come and confirm if it was the same address that I knew,". "I don't know what to think of this. The Plateau state government has recorded two fresh deaths from its battle against Lassa fever.
This has brought it to three persons killed so far since the outbreak of the disease last week.
Last week, the outbreak claimed one life in Mangu, Mangu local government of the state, and this week, the disease has claimed two more victims.
State commissioner for Health, Dr. Kuden Kamshak who confirmed the death of the two victims on Mondaysaid the victims died at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) where the victims were being treated.
Dr. Kamshak also said 37 other victims have been quarantined in Mangu where they are being closely monitored by a team of medical experts.
Earlier last week, Dr. Kamshak confirmed that five local governments in the state are at risk of contracting the disease. They are Jos North, Mangu, Langtang South, Pankshin and Shendam LGA respectively.
State Commissioner also said, “The state with support from the World Health Organisation (WHO) is working round the clock to contain the spread of the virus”
According to Dr. Kamshak, “The state government has established Disease Survellance and Notification Officers (DSNO) in each of the 17 local governments in the state to monitor and manage the health challenge”
The Commissioner however, urged citizens of the state not to panic but remain calm and vigilant, and to report promptly to the nearest health care facility if any more the symptom is noticed.
He also warned residents to clear their homes and surroundings of rats, maintain good sanitation habits and also keeps cats at home to keep off rats.
The state government has intensified public awareness through the state media to sensitize citizens on the outbreak, the symptoms and ways to prevent it.

6 Fulani herdsmen docked for kidnapping, robbery_SixFulani herdsmen arrested by the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, IRT, for allegedly kidnapping and terrorizing businessmen, including residents of Okeho, a border town in Oyo State, have been charged to court.
The suspects, identified as Abdullahi Mohammed, 35; Abubakar Abubakar, 28; Damanya Gambo, 30; Usman Saidu, 30; Usman Idris, 35; and Hassan Maikudi,30, were yesterday arraigned before an Oyo State High Court in Ibadan, on a four-count charge bordering on armed robbery, kidnapping and illegal possession of charms.
Vanguardhad reported last November how the suspects, who were alleged to have kidnapped prominent residents, were rounded up at Okeho, a town bordering Benin Republic in Oyo State.
It was gathered that the Inspector General, Solomon Arase, after receiving several complaints of the gang’s activities, had deployed the IRT operatives, led by CSP Abba Kyari, to the area and they apprehended the suspects from their various hideouts.
One of the suspects, Maikudi, was said to have led the kidnappers to abduct his father and a ransom of N1.5 million was paid.
