Obama Threatens S Africa With Trade Sanctions If…US President Barack Obama has threatened to impose trade sanctions on South Africa for blocking imports of meat from the US. Obama said on Thursday that he will suspend South Africa’s right to ship farm products to the US duty-free unless it begins to dismantle barriers to American pork, poultry, and beef within 60 days. “I am taking this step because South Africa continues to impose several long-standing barriers to US trade, including barriers affecting certain US agricultural exports,” he said in a letter to Congress. At stake are trade benefits South Africa receives under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) which is meant to encourage African countries to open their economies to trade.
The US says South Africa has been blocking US chicken imports for 15 years and has used “unwarranted sanitary restrictions” to keep out US pork and beef. Mike Brown, president of the US National Chicken Council, backed the move and said it made no sense for the US to give special preferences to countries that treated it unfairly.
“This should send a clear message to South Africa and their poultry industry that they will not be given a ‘Get out of jail free’ card every time AGOA rounds the turn,” he said. Turkey Police Arrest IS Suspects In Antalya Ahead Of G20_Turkish police have arrested 20 people suspected of links to the Islamic State group in Antalya a week before the city hosts a G20 summit, reports say. US President Barack Obama will be among the world leaders arriving in city on Turkey’s southern coast for the summit on 15-16 November.
Two of the suspects arrested on Friday are said to be Russian. Turkey has stepped up operations against IS militants following a string of deadly bombings. Anti-terror police carried out simultaneous raids in three districts of Antalya early on Friday, local media said.
Officers reportedly seized “digital materials” during the operation. Violence has escalated in Turkey since a suicide bombing in July by suspected IS militants.

Read What Buhari Told Jonathan During Their Secret Meeting_It was learnt that the meeting was facilitated by former head of state Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, The Nation reports.
Abubakar headed the 2015 elections peace committee that paved way for peace before, during and after the 2015 general elections.
The meeting was coming on the heels of complaints by Jonathan that Buhari is not sticking to the peace accord they signed prior to March 28, 2015 presidential election.
Jonathan had hoped to stop the probe of his administration over alleged misappropriation of fund under his watch.
However, the president had insisted that all looted funds must be returned. A source who does not want to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue said the president told Jonathan that he had nothing to fear at all.
It was gathered that the outcome of the session between Buhari and Jonathan could have informed Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s statement at the weekend. The VP said the anti-corruption fight of the present administration is not focused on Jonathan.
It is believed in some quarters that Jonathan was not happy that Buhari had moved against his ex-national security adviser, ex-chief security officer and some ministers.
The source said Jonathan prevailed on Abubakar’s committee to beg Buhari not to‘rubbish’ his administration.
He said: “For some weeks, Jonathan has been in the country to iron out some issues on his government. Based on Jonathan’s complaint, Abdulsalami made efforts – five times- to get in touch with Buhari but the ex-Head of State could not get through on time. I think Buhari already had security reports on Jonathan’s emissary.”
At some point, the former head of state met brick wall in securing audience with president Buhari but some past presidents had to prevail on Buhari to give the committee a chance to mediate.
The source added: “This was how Abdulsalami succeeded in securing an appointment from Buhari for Jonathan with a caveat that the immediate past President should feel free to bare his mind.
“Jonathan said he was hearing some of the allegations, especially financial sleaze, against his administration for the first time. He made it clear that he had nothing to do with some of these corrupt practices.
“He said whatever steps or actions the President intends to take; it should be within the framework of the peace accord the two leaders signed. Obviously, he wanted soft landing. He also pledged to cooperate with Buhari as much as possible on all steps he is going to take.”
Buhari had stated during the meeting that Jonathan had nothing to fear but insisted that there was no going back on the recovery of looted funds.
“The President reassured Jonathan that he has no personal agenda against him. But he insisted that whatever was stolen from the treasury must be returned,” the source said.

I Won’t Stop Talking Of Corruption During Jonathan’s Govt—buhari_ABUJA—President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed not to shy away from telling Nigerians how the immediate past administration allegedly plundered the economy, irrespective of anyone’s feelings.
Responding to allegations by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that he was demarketing the country and dissuading foreign investments, the President vowed that the relentless tackles of the opposition party would not in any way dissuade him from his obligations to the citizenry and the international community.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh had, yesterday, attacked the President’s claim in India that Nigeria was broke, saying that such claims at international fora tended to worsen the country’s investment climate.

Metuh had, in his statement, alleged that such claims by the President were essentially because of his lack of a viable economic plan.
Responding to PDP yesterday, presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, said that Metuh’s attempts to distract the President from focusing on his job would fail, maintaining that he was a broken record.
The statement read in part: “Our attention has been drawn to the latest statement by the PDP spokesman, Olisa Metuh, alleging that President Muhammadu Buhari is ‘demarketing Nigeria’.
“We restate for the umpteenth time to Mr. Metuh and his ilk that their attempts to distract President Buhari from the job he has been elected to do will fail.
“President Buhari will remain true to the virtues of honesty, integrity, sincerity, incorruptibility and plain-speaking, which endeared him to Nigerians and made them prefer his leadership to that of a lying and deceptive PDP administration.
“The President will not, in the guise of ‘marketing’ the country, refrain from telling Nigerians and the world, the emerging truths about the abject state in which years of plundering by a PDP leadership has left the Nigerian treasury and economy.
“President Buhari will not in the name of ‘marketing’ or ‘attracting’ investors, follow in the footsteps of the ousted PDP administration and its discredited officials, who shamelessly lied to Nigerians and the world about the buoyancy and vibrancy of an economy they had bled dry for personal gain, when it was very obvious to the discerning, that the Nigerian economy was headed for serious trouble.”

Earlier in his statement, Metuh had said: “Mr. President’s recent announcement to the world that the nation, with its abundant human and natural resources, is broke and cannot pay cabinet ministers, not only sends a discouraging signal to the domestic and international business community, but also exposes the ineptitude of the present administration to meaningfully and sincerely exert itself and work with industrious and innovative investors to create and manage wealth.
“We ask how can any reasonable investor still have the confidence to invest in a country where the President himself continues to alert that his country reeks of corrupt people and that the government is broke to the extent it cannot pay cabinet ministers?
“Is the President not directly advising investors against having confidence in Nigeria and the system, and that they risk not being paid for jobs awarded by government at any level?
“More worrisome is the fact that Mr. President makes his damaging comments in international fora with potential investors in attendance. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has appealed to the kingmakers of Ile-Ife to follow strictly, the laid down rules and procedures for the appointment and selection of the new Ooni following the demise of Oba Okunade Sijuwade.
Chief Obasanjo made the appeal when he visited the kingmakers at the Ooni’s palace on Friday, to commiserate with the chiefs and the people of Ife over the death of their king.
“I was here in this palace ten days before the demise of kabiyesi and he told me how the Yoruba race is margnalised in the scheme of things. He also told me to ensure that the Yoruba race got its own share of things in the country,” he said. He, therefore asked the kingmakers to be careful about the choice of the person that would occupy the stool saying that late Sijuwade while occupying the stool has taken the seat of Ooni beyond Africa.
The Obalufe of Ife, Gabriel Omisakin who received Obasanjo on behalf of other chiefs assured the former president the choice of the new Ooni would not lead to any crises.
He promised that the kingmakers would ensure that diligent, due process for the selection of new Ooni would be carried out to ensure that whoever emerge is the choice of the people.

I’ll Never Stop Missing My Late Wife, Stella, Says Obasanjo_Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday recalled fond memories of life with his late wife, Stella, who he said he would continue to miss greatly.
Speaking at the 10th memorial service for his late wife at the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, the ex-president said the tribute he had written about her in his autobiography ‘My Watch’, tells it all.
“I won’t say much about her today because much had been written already in my tribute about my late wife in the book, ‘My Watch’ and part of it says ‘she will be dearly missed by me, my family and the Abebe family’”, Obasanjo said.
Speaking on behalf of the Abebe family, Mr. John Abebe said their sister and daughter would be missed.
For the Deputy National Chairman South of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni, the late Stella was a quintessential woman, who was born and raised in a family reputed for humility and integrity.
The APC chieftain, who spoke with reporters at the reception, said his close interaction with the Abebe family gave him a rare insight into the late Mrs Stella Obasanjo, whose pedigree, he stressed, could not be over-emphasized.
The officiating clergy and former Aso Villa Chaplain, Pastor Yussuf Obaje, in the memorial service sermon titled “Keep her memory alive”, described the late First Lady as an epitome of womanhood and urged the family to continue to keep her legacy alive.
For Senator Ben Murray Bruce, the late Stella Obasanjo was an unusual and global woman, who contributed her quota to humanity before her demise
The memorial service was attended by prominent Nigerians among them former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Ogun state governor, Sen. Ibikunke Amosun; and former NNPC Group Managing Director, Engr. Funso Kupolokun.
