How BBNaija Exposed The Hypocrisy Of Many Nigerians

The BBNaija Season 5 Lockdown Edition has come to a close after the announcement of Laycon as the winner of this year's edition of the show. The show ran consecutively for seventy one (71) days and served the viewers undiluted funs, twist, dramas and fights. The Reality TV show is the most watched and most expensive on the continent which is why we have so many viewers emotionally attached to the housemates.

However, this show has continued to reveal how hypocritical many Nigerians are. They declared that they can never watch the show due to immoral acts portrayed by some of the housemates such as kissing, handling and other acts but you see them awake to watch these adults do their acts. These same people who once questions the morality of the show are the one showering praises on Laycon. The huge noise on the internet over the success of Laycon is a further demonstration that for this group of Nigerians, it’s all about success and not how you made it.

Also, some of the viewers displayed high level of hypocrisy due to how their favourite housemates was bowled out of the show. Shortly after the disqualification of Erica Nweledim, you see most of her fans made oaths and allegiance not to watch the show. To them, it is best to devote their resources and time to her dreams rather than spending it on the show. These sets of fans are those you will see on social media analysing the housemates who were in the house and spreading more hate agendas.

Some sets of religious leaders can't be spared from the axe of the hypocrisy too. They preach on the altar and pulpit about how immoral the show is but they are quick to make use of the good acts of these housemates as a yardstick to measure standards for their followers. It begs the question if we have exhausted all the examples in the Holy Books. Now, you hear them saying the winner has grace from God following him.

During the show, housemates were trolled on social media for 'common' things some of them do at home. He who seeks equity must come with clean hand but this is not so for many Nigerians who blames the house for things they do in their normal life such as kissing, mingling with opposite sex, getting drunk and other careless behaviours exhibited by the housemates. The fans behaves like a saint when analysing these housemates but their own cupboards is full of skeletons.

It is no doubt that we Nigerians believe so much in our respective religions. We go to church, mosque and shrines. The dictates of these religions preach for peace, humility, tranquility and so many virtues that shapes one's life to achieve eternal blessings. It is a shame that when it comes to watching and analysing the show, we go back on the principles of our religion and immediately switch back the next time we see ourselves in religious gatherings. So many of the housemates were slut shamed, cursed and abused. Not to talk of death threats for being in a game, these fans also spread toxicity among the fanbase. It begs to ask if we only go to play at these religious gatherings.

Hardly will a day go by without some sets of Nigerians abusing and cursing each other just because they couldn't respect each others opinion. Does this means we can loose our home training just because of a show? Does hiding behind the keyboard give you the leverage to spread hate? The answer is No. We can still enjoy the show without any form of sentiments or hatred towards each other. You can't be preaching love and peace among your siblings at home and you come online to spread hatred among people you don't know. It is time you pick a side and stop the double standard.

This is a wake up call for many Nigerians to stop these hypocrisy. If you are for the show, accept all the things that comes with the premium package ranging from the gruesome tasks presented to these housemates, to kissing, cuddling, handling and other immoral acts. If these acts goes against your conscience and intelligence, stay away from the show and go on with your life. We have other Nigerians who never bothered themselves with the show, it is high time you join their queue.

To the fans, it is time they accept that it is just a game and their actions will definitely affect these housemates once the game is over. Due to agendas of these set of people, past housemates who were once friends and lovers are no longer in good terms. These housemates also wants to be in the spotlight for long and the fights lingers on so it can bring discussions and trends.

The show is a good development for any nation. It is a platform to showcase what you have got to the world. To give your business more reach, to advertise your talents to the world so you can achieve your dreams. Upcoming artiste, celebrities, live bands are also promoted so people can know them. It will be wise to curb the high level of toxicity displayed or the show will soon be consumed by this making it fade into oblivion just like some other Big Brother show on the continent.

The Minister of State for Labour, Festus Keyamo (SAN) has been at loggerheads with Nigerian lawmakers over the implementation of the special programme initiated by the Buhari led regime to provide 774,000 jobs to Nigerian youth. The special programme which is meant to cushion the effect of Coronavirus pandemic amongst Nigerian youths is expected to commence in October. The programme is expected to gulp 52 billion naira meant for payment of participants at N20,000 per month for 3 months.
The misunderstanding between the two started about two weeks ago when the minister walked out of a meeting with the lawmakers who had invited him to give details of the special public works for unskilled youths. The lawmakers pointed out that it is the duty of Nigerian Directorate of Employment (NDE) to implement such public work and accused Kenyamo of wanting to hijack the programme. Mr. Keyamo, during his counter accusation believed that the lawmakers wants to sabotage the recruitment process despite receiving 15 per cent job slot.
In retaliation to this rude act by Keyamo, the National Assembly suspended the work of Selection Committee nationwide until they decide on how the programme should be run and who should be in those committees.
Over the past two weeks now, there has been so many reactions from the youths, politicians and other intellectuals in the country. Festus Keyamo is strong headed and believes in his principle a lot while the National Assembly are hell bent on taking the anchor of the programme away from his hands. Let's take a look at the actions of both party so far.
Barrister Keyamo's Defense
1. Since day one of the project initiation, Keyamo has always prided that the project was entrusted to him by President Buhari to empower Nigerian youths. Don't forget that the Federal Government had on the 7th of July announced the commencement of the programme. Festus Keyamo confirmed to media outlets that the President gave him the go-ahead to implement the process.
2. The National Assembly wants the NDE to implement and supervise the special public project but Mr. Keyamo insisted in a statement he put out to media outlets that the programme cannot be implemented without his approval according to the NDE Act.
3. After the Joint Committee of both the Senate and House of Representatives on Labour matters made a resolution for the selection committee headed by NDE Chairman to stop its work. Keyamo was of the view that the Committee's power under the section 89 of the 1999 Constitution is only limited to investigations but not to give directives to the executive.
He highlighted further that the Committee do not have the powers to pass binding resolutions but can only make recommendations to the Plenary. And even, the plenary can not give directives to the executive.
4. Keyamo believed that all through his life, he has always being an advocate for good governance and constitutional democracy. He stated that he has not come to government to abandon those principles and only unless his principal directs him to do so. He will not compromise the job meant for ordinary Nigerian because they have no God father or neither affiliated to a political party.
5. Even thou the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige apologised to the leadership of National Assembly over the controversy, the ministry is backing Keyamo to lead the anchor of the special public works.
National Assembly
1. At the plenary session of the House of Representative on Tuesday, 21st of July, 2020, it was said that the office of Festus Kenyamo was not known to law and therefore the special public works programme should be removed from his hand.
2. The lawmakers in a motion raised on the floor believed that NDE, being a creation of the law has been in existence for about 23 years and has all the support staff to implement the programme. The President has been urged by them to direct Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, to live up to his lawful duty and supervise the NDE.
3. The Lawmakers has earlier urged the Ministry of Finance not to release any funds for the implementation of the special public works programme if it fails to pass the due process as contained in the Appropriation Bill and NDE Act.
4. The National Assembly was also berated at the attitude of Keyamo towards the lawmakers and National Assembly. They believe that the attitude may jeopardise the capacity of the legislative body to oversight and ensure prudence.
The principle of separation of powers in democracy comes with its own frustration. The legislators are special group of people empowered to checkmate the executive through diligent oversight activities. As the controversy continues, our hands are folded as we wait for the turns of event over the next few weeks to see how the issue will be resolved.
