let me tell u d simple truth...u need skills to get d jobs currently in d market,,unless u are sure of getting a government job after graduation which is very very slim...only d rich and highly connected can put their children in government jobs...sometimes they need to pay as high as 500k to secure those jobs for their children...... but my advice to u now is BETWEEN NOW AND WEN U GRADUATE GO AND GET A CERTIFICATION IN HR OR ICAN OR ACCA...TRY AND TILT TOWARDS HUMAN RESOURCE OR ACCOUNTING NOW COS EVERY ORGANIZATION NEEDS THEIR SERVICES...anything apart from these,,just get ready to do ur private business.. Iam a 2nd Class upper graduate of Sociology. I got a job less than a month after NYSC, and have since then had the courtesy of changing 2 other good jobs before the present one within a space of 5 years. My advice however will be to concentrate and come out with a good grade cos even good graduates of PHE are working in sectors where graduates with designated certificate won’t cos of poor result. And you will be doing yourself a big Favour if you are very good in the aspect of Social research. Being a good sociology is synonymous to being an excellent researcher cos this makes you very suitable for NGOs and academic jobs. Las las just concentrate on developing yourself regardless of the discipline u are studying

You have made your right choice by following your instincts. Do not let the negatives in this thread be your narrative. To succeed is a personal choice/race. Start each day by telling yourself what you want and see it happening.

A first degree most times just tell that you can be trained as such, you can pick up roles in many industries of your choice.

Most importantly, while in school, focus on your studies and build yourself as well. Get the necessary exposure by joining socioacademic groups like AIISEC. Create a LinkedIn account and make the right connections and follow up with them. Do not make the mistake of requesting monetary favors rather ask for mentorship. Try to organize a meeting with one mentor monthly just to learn what they did that made them successful.

Above all, may the odds be in your favor.

As a sociology you are most qualified to work in any human endeavour. Anywhere human beings are is your place of duty. I am a sociologist, have an M.sc Criminology and i am the regional manager in a well reputable insurance company. My course/class mates are all doing very very well. Some are in the Nigeria military, many in DSS, some in NPF, some in customs, some in the banking sector, 5 are legislators.

Well Sociology is a very good and solemn course. Remember that you have to do a lot statistics which easily makes you a good data analyst, all you need is a good knowledge of computer and Microsoft spreadsheet program. Always look out for data analyst positions. All the best
