I read Sociology. I don't regret it.. I am Currently an Health Entrepreneur but applying all my sociological skills while on the job.

Done NGO jobs, civil service, customer services in private sector, and many others before I decided to pick a societal problem and focus on it which is what sociology is all about. Am proud of the few people whose life I have been able to lighten up with the problem I solve. Am still a work in progress. Never stopping.

Change your mindset about certificates and jobs. Sociology exposes you to societal problems and develops your critical thinking abilities to solve those problems. It's broad and helps you fit anywhere.

The first thing people ask me when they meet me is if I am a medical doctor. Lol. I only read Sociology but as a problem solver and with my research abilities, I know much more than your doctor.
Please no offence

Agreed, some of the comments maybe discouraging but it is the harsh truth! There's no need to sugar coat it.
This is not to scare anybody but to help prepare for the reality ahead.

I still wish I was well primed for life after university. Instead I was told to just study hard, get a good grade and a good job is assured.
The reality shock I got after school almost sent me into depression. Apart from the north(except Abuja), there's no part of this country I didn't travel to in search of a job. I have slept in a motor park in the quest for a job.
I am grateful to God that life is better for me today but I always tell whoever cares to listen the truth as it concerns education and jobs in this country.

My advice:
Whatever it is that you are studying, by the side, learn how to generate income on your own, learn how to increase 1kobo to 2kobos.
Ask yourself if I don't get a job with this certificate, how do I intend to survive. Answer that question and you are good to go.

My 2cents!
Thanks

Something must be wrong with you if you think all that happens in telecommunications is just engineering.. There's finance, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing and Sales etc..

There's a whole lot wrong with your post. It reveals so much ignorance on a deep level.

I don't like dummies quoting me please. Look elsewhere, thanks.
Sociology is dynamic and can work anywhere
Or so i heard

I am in academics, not in your field though. Getting there is very difficult. Its like getting a federal government job slot. And more difficult because lecturers are paid better than civil servants of the same level. I hope that you are on at least, 2:1? You need to realise that everyone in pub admin, sociology, pol science etc wants to lecture. And 90% of you are on 2:2. Competition is crazy. Don't sit there and think that lecturing is an easy way out. It will end in tears oo.
My advice to you is to learn a skill. I am also into farming among other things. Even if na mechanic it is better. Many people were sacked when lockdown started but plumbers and electricians were still going about their business fixing TVs and blocked toilets. We Nigerians like going to school like water because it is cheap. Many people here who are giving you hope will not tell you how much they paid to get the slot. Some of them are from influential families. Some are even on first class, but they're here giving you hope and you too you're happy.
Can i get your number please?

You can't take everybody's advise. Sociology is not entirely useless. In fact you have better opportunities especially in law enforcement. If you don't like a job that involves guns there are others like Immigration, NDLEA, ICPC, EFCC e.t.c with departments where you don't need a gun. Go through with your Sociology and maybe a masters in Criminology, make good grades, build your communication skills and intellect and the sky would be your limit. Destinies and grace differs. There's no harm in learning one or two skills though.
Thats my dream
Thanks anyways

In Nigeria as I've seen now, what you study really has less to do with where you're gonna be.

I know someone who studied Islamic studies and works with NNPC today. Surprising right?

My advice to you is:
Be serious with your studies, learn a skill especially during this pandemic (not just a trade o). Develop your communication & writing skills, trust me it'll come in handy some day.

There are several jobs that will come at you and how well you're able to sell yourself will be what's important, and not your course of study.
Please like what and what skill??

my guy just get a skill. Working with a sociology degree in nigerian is a big challenge. I graduated as a sociologist from uniport too. 2017. the only work area you can properly fit into is teaching and security (force). And if you get lucky Human resource management and customer service; but you still have to get a cert (maybe a short training during your Nysc) to give u an edge.

But don't be scared, just study and graduate. As my uncle will always say No certificate is a waste. The cert can boost your chances at some jobs. (graduate matters) Because some jobs and forms request for graduates from any discipline at all.
Where are u workin now?

WELL AM A GRADUATE OF SOCIOLOGY, U NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF SOCIOLOGY FIRST, IF U DO U MAY NOT NEED TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT NEXT AFTER GRADUATION. IT MAKES U TO UNDERSTAND LIFE BETTER. WHEN I LEFT SCHOOL 2013 I WENT FOR MY SERVICE IN 2014 I GOT A JOB IN AN IT FIRM WHICH I DID FOR ONE YEAR BEFORE MOVING TO THE BANK, WHICH AFTER 3 YEARS I MOVED TO ANOTHER BANK AND I CAN TELL U I AM DOING VERY WELL. WITH THE UNDERSTANDING OF SOCIOLOGY I MASTERED HUMAN BEHAVIOUR WHICH I APPLY TO THE OFFICE POLITICS WHICH HAS EARNED ME SOME ADVANTAGE IN BANKING.

MY DEAR AS A GRADUATE OF SOCIOLOGY U WILL EVENTUALLY EXCEL IN ANY CAREER U FIND URSELF
Good comment

Sociology is a good course and always proud of being a sociologist. But this Nigeria our country did not require your field to secure you a related job except for those who study engineering. Anywhere you found your self give glory to your God and wish yourself all d best.

Work extremely hard. I wrote in some thread before, the steps I took to make a 1st Class.
Make a 1st Class. Engage in writing publications and articles during your 1st degree.
Go for a Masters. I'm certainly sure you will get a scholarship.
Write and publish during your Masters.
You will earn a PhD scholarship with that.

Then come back to this thread and write your experience.
Where do u work now??

Where you'll work may not relate to your field of study.

Next time you pick up a newspaper, pay close attention to the vacancy section.

There is an 8/10 chance that you will find the answer to your question.

But I know some companies always ask for sociology degrees when looking to fill up positions in PR and customer service departments. That should give you a fair idea where you belong with your degree.

And hey, be proud of what you studied, man. "Professional course" or not.

Wonder what that means... sad
Thankss
This helped me
