tomakint: Awolowo’s singular error in my own dictionary or let me say diary, was his refusal to support the Biafran cause! Believe me, there is more to meet the eyes for an intellectually gifted sage like Awolowo to ‘suddenly’ see himself ‘accepting’ to serve in Gowon’s (a northerner) administration at a time the Biafrans (Eastern Nigeria) were planning their exit from Nigeria. He (in my opinion) must have accepted that offer based on some ‘conditionalities’ which may not have been divulged to the public (perhaps Gowon knew better) up to now. His alleged infamous statement during the Nigeria-Biafra War where he stated; ‘all is fair in war, and starvation is one of the weapons of war. I don’t see why we should feed our enemies fat in order for them to fight harder’, to say the least is incriminating! To me, the above quoted statement is evil-laden (knowing fully well the lives of innocent civilians were at stake) in all its entirety, as much as I respect Pa Awo and even still holds him in high esteem till tomorrow, I think in my own candid opinion his penchant for the crown worked against his judgment on this one. Looking at the hateful statement again, you want to ask, who were the enemies Pa Awo was referring to here? Were they the Biafran soldiers? Were they the grown up civilian men forcefully made soldiers? Were they the defenseless women and those little children and babies? Definitely, all these groups fall into ‘Awo’s painted enemies’! Unfortunately, the inclusion of the last group into that targeted enemies remain the nemesis of Awo till death, being the principal actor in Gowon’s cabinet – It was pure GENOCIDE of the deepest dye! If I am to consider the word ‘enemies’ again, I think we (Nigerians) are the ‘enemies’ here and not the Biafrans. Pa Awo no doubt is a sage, the best President Nigeria never had, little wonder, his political travails on Earth attract deep love and affection from his associates and admirers as well as extreme hatred from his antagonists and virulent critics in equal measure. To the fallen, innocent Igbos, Adieu!

You seem to be averagely fair in your critics.
But let me ask a few questions and you put yourself in the position and answer.
A battle between FG (in the north) and Biafra (in the south) will converge in the center (this time around in Yorubaland as it later turned out). Awolowo was in prison, not prepared for war. Ojukwu was not only a military man, but also an eastern leader with command support. Where on earth did u think he could get the military to fight. The western leader then was a military-man loyal to the FG.
He agreed with Ojukwu (maybe) but when he discussed with his people (the Yorubas) they said they were not prepare. Besides, military garrison was stationed in the west, this would lead to death of many civilians, especially the Yorubas. After all these efforts, he traveled back to Ojukwu with some Yoruba elders and Mid-west elders to plead with Ojukwu not to go ahead, at least for now, that the Yorubas are not militarily prepared.
After all these persuasion from different people, Ojukwu still went ahead. Then bombed Lagos and was advancing to Lagos en route Ore to claim Lagos. If you were Awo, please tell us what you will do.Even a slowpoke won't fold his hand!!!
I have many points I have no time to post.
However, I'm not ruling out the fact that the Igbos were victim of genocide caused by Fg and Ojukwu decision to recruit children soldier and divert FG food to his solders before the so-call 'food policy/policy of starvation' was enacted.

ignis:
Pls explain further

He doesn't need any explanation again. he has said the truth. Achebe has drifted from a nationalist and elder he should have been. How can a so-called elder descended so low that he became a liar to win sympathy?!
Many questions come to mind which can't be answered.
1. Why did he choose to let Ojukwu die before his 'gospel of lie' is published?
2. Why didn't he mention how Awo led some groups of Yoruba and mid-western elders to explain to Ojukwu that the war met the race unprepared and so his people said they can't join? In deed, how can we join. Ojukwu has been preparing militarily; he got some countries on his side. You expected Awo to leave prison and start war? No weapon, he is not a military man, no arrangement. Even, the Agbekoyas prepare well before the battle. Read history.
3. Why did he fail to acknowledge the fact that the federal garrison has been stationed in Yoruba land, and in deed there is no way they could join, so much that Yoruba did not prepare
4. Why did he fail to mention that Prof Wole Soyinka was jailed by the federal govt because he met secretly with Ojukwu to avert the war. Soyinka was jailed for 20 months because of Biafra. Anyway, he didn't congratulate Soyinka when he was honoured with Nobel Laurel; another evidence of the 'character' of the so called "Ibos voice"- envy.
5. While Soyinka was languishing in prison, he (Achebe) was enjoying in the UK (and later US). When interviewed later, he (Achebe) said had I been in Nigeria, I would have been in his (Soyinka) shoe (referring to Soyinka's imprisonment). Read for yourself
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinua_Achebe
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wole_Soyinka

He kept all these truth away and started enveloping his people's errors with lies. Well, time will tell! He has succeeded to divide Nigeria along ethnic line. This is what he live for - ethnic jingoism. And that is the gift he has to offer his descendant before as he prepares to depart. Shameful!!!

jas_o: It's a sad situation and so depress reading such disgust story in the media. The CBN governor said the solution to economy lob sided of the nation he so much emphasized on recurrent expenditure therefore call for massive retrenchment in the civil servant. However the Governor had forgot to mention in his remark the level of corruption in his own designated office where 2.1 billion naira can be vamoose like air. People have been calling for this man removal in the office and this call should not be neglected. In our system people with good intention to sanitize the system can be easily be bought to the other side especially when you have a price tag. They will come on air and speak economic terms to deceived our people, most of this grammar they speak have been rehearse and re-defined to suit their professional looting style.in this country you see arm rubber celebrating this shameful name. Arm rubbery has advanced, the desires to own what your salary can’t avoid you couple with oppressor life style of our messengers in the name of governor, chairman, up to councilor has made our people subjected to rubbery life style. May Nigerians help themselves not God! We can only need God help to scale us through the war and help us to succeed in killing these rogues and their immediate family to prevent this corruption to continue escalating.

Honestly, this is one of the national shame and rot we need elders in our land to help address. It would have been more honourable for Achebe, like as Soyinka is criticizing and joining SN, to help use his weight of international recognition to purge the nation than embarking on revengeful mission or opening old wound most agile Nigeria did not live to witness.
Except we are motivated by strong people in so much that we can take to the street or call for civil disobedience, the nation cabal will keep riding on us as horse. What do we hear from oil subsidy issue again?! Nothing. Bankole #40 billions issue nko? Nothing!!
Nigerians arise!!! Even if we are going to split, should these idiots keep treating us like this?

dayokanu: Fashola is on his own.

Lets reopen all wounds and bring everything back to the fore,

Let Igbos explain to everyone the legendary act of betrayal on why their soldiers chose to kill other regional leaders and spare theirs.

Maybe that would be a good point to start

No, they want to see that.
All they want to see is Biafra war, forgetting that an event led to another, which led to another which led to another.........(the chain continue but begin in 1966 coup)

bushwailo: Very comforting to know that the new breed of Yoruba leaders are more nationalistic and are Bridge builders
This includes the likes of Tinubu, Obj, Wole and now Fashola.

Awo was a great leader but was at best politically divisive both nationally and even in Yorubaland.
The sooner Yorubas accepts this, the better, afterall he is human and not God.

It is not uncommon to open the pages of Newspapers and see Ikemba and the Great Zik continiously being critisised by Igbos.
Even though they are still revered and respected.

It is not uncommon to see Igbos acknowledge the successes of Yorubas as a race.
But in Yorubaland it is different.

The more moderate voices are like Fashola and Soyinka are being gagged while extreme right wing Yoruba Awoists are allowed to represent the voice of all Yorubas.
I think they end up portraying the Yorubas as Igbo haters and creating all this bad blood.

For an ethnic group like the Yorubas, I think this is a shame !
To your ignorance, the Yoruba people are more fothright than your people. The truth is that, Ojuku was persuaded enough to think of the safety of his people over and above a self-pursue goal. But he prefer not to sacrifice his kinsmen to achieve his personal goal.
Tell me, if there was not oil in ND, will he think of succession? Why can't the succession be conceaved in atmosphere of peace? Why trying to capture Lagos and harness it as part of Biafra? You see, there many things to this issue than the 'half-truth half-lie' told by Achebe.

Was it not NPC and their coalition partner NCNC who had awo jailed on thrumped up charges? NPC could not have done it on their own volition

with the active support of zik and his party who were in govt with them (NPC).

Only zik and his ibo people needed to destroy awo and the AG thinking that will open the way for them to take over yorubaland but as usual, they underestimated

the yorubas. As long as the sardunna have overall power which zik and his people already conceded to him, he didn't care about destroying awo's party.

And he fail, as his descendant will keep failing at that!

Friend, have u heard of 'Conspiracy Theory' before? To every conspirsacy theory, there are plot, lies and cover-up. We are talking of underlying facts here and not the opinionated views of most books written on the direct cause of the war. Pick any book on the war and u'l c the dissenting voices on the direct cause of the Kaduna Mafia/British war against the Igbos.Trust me we(SW & others) were used

It is you and your father that were used, not we, the true sons of Yoruba.
What u forgot is that one event led to the other. If there had never been the first Nigerian coup, or if the coup had never carried the ethnic tone, as it did, we would never had had this kind of history. The point is that, those killed in the coup, are they not fathers, mothers and relatives of some people? Even a pregnant wife of one the leaders was also killed. One evil begat another now!!!
That apart, If Ojukwu had not declare secession, this wouldn't have happen. He wanted Awolowo to join without a single preparation on the part of Awo and the Yoruba nation. You forgot that he who fails to plan plans to fail? Papa Awo is a sage, he knew he could not prosecute a war with FG, so led some western and mid-western leaders to meet Ojukwu to exercise restrain because we are not ready. Don't forget Ojukwu had the Frenc leader, and some other nations backing him while Awo has never made any contact because he was in prison then. Had Ojukwu listen to the voice of wisdom, we wouldn't have this today.
Or had Awo went to the war without adequate preparation, then you (if truly you are a Yoruba) would be blaming him today for the death, not to say annihilation, of your generation. Let's face the fact, if I'm in Awo's position, I will do the same, I mean not going to war, even if I have previously agreed to. Everyone just open his/her mouth blaming the man, when he left the prison, consulted with the Yoruba elders and those ones, being wise and being factual, intimate him with our none preparedness. What do you expect him to do?
To sacrifice his race whom he loved so much and will not want them die? As a matter of fact, if Ojukwu is patriotic enough, why not surrender on time, even if he has to test his might in going to war. It is on record that he used child soldiers, on record that he refused FG aid for the masses, on record that he ran away, on record that he negotiated and got back all his properties, etc.
So, let get it right. Awo did incredibly excellent by protecting his race, we are proud of him!!!!
May his soul rest in peace!!!

African Continental Bank (ACB) was a property of defunct eastern regional government. It was not and never a sole property of Ndigbo. The state governments of Enugu, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa have decided to liquidate the assets of the bank. Half education is one of the most serious handicaps inflicted on a human being.

So Enugu, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo, are no more ibo states, abi. You are the one with half education.

I think you miss something about this issue. The personalities involved in the civil war saga are mostly dead or are dying as we speak. The most important issue is that of princinple. And that principle says that if it's ok to massacre Igbos under any guise today, tomorrow it might ok to massacre Beroms, Yorubas, or Hausas under some questionable guise too?

Did you hear Gowon say that most of the Igbo casualities was from stampeding rush to escape rumors of northern advancement
And he easily forgot that more Igbos were killed by their northern neighbours before the war actually broke out?
Politics / Re: AWOLOWO'S CRIMES AGAINST IGBOS by justice11: 2:50am On Oct 29, 2012
Just that u are consumed with ethnic jingoism which has taken away from u guys every sense of decency. It is never a mockery from the man that said it, the whole world new Awo was the best president that was never allowed to rule Nigeria. For example, the legacy he laid down in the west still remain, not only the best of all but also the most admire of all legacies ever laid in Naija. Today, we are the better for it! We remain the top in all ramification. Count the most educated (we not only have emeritus professors, we also have Nobel prize winner), one of the richest in the country,in the field of art, music, drama, religion, mention it; the west is ahead. I guess this is what is making u guys unhappy about the blessed Yoruba race.
If you keep thinking evil of the man Awo, then we will believe Ojukwu was intentionally aid and abet genocide by refusing federal govt food intervention to get to the masses and hijacking it for himself, as widely speculated; he was also accused of using child-solders, etc.
However, I admirer the spirit of the Ibos, doggedness. I think we should burry our differences and work together.

Anyway, it doesn't matter! It is an indication and an instinct of how bastard you were born. What murder did Awo committed? When your leaders ruthlessly killed other tribe leaders in 1966, did they forget that this murder they committed against others will be visited on their generation? Now that it was on your side you can condemn it.
