Some people around the world practice body modifications that will put punks to shame. Even though many of these rituals seem extremely painful to us, they carry a strong meaning in some countries. 1. Facial scarification Men of the Dinka tribe in South Sudan scar their faces with three lines across the forehead. It is a sign of courage. This practice marks the transition to manhood. 2. Body scarification Sepik River tribes in Papua, New Guinea practice scarification as part of an initiation ceremony for men. The elders use razor blades to cut the young men in a pattern that looks like the rough skin of an alligator. 3. Wooden Plugs The Apatani tribe resides in the Ziro valley in Arunachal Pradesh, India. Apatani women were amongst the most beautiful. They were so beautiful that they made themselves look unattractive as protection from invaders from other tribes. Apatani women consequently started wearing large wooden plugs in their noses. 4. Lip Elongation The Mursi is a nomadic tribe living in the border between Ethiopia and Sudan. Mursi women are famous for wearing large plates in their lower lips. This practice is a sign of endurance and maturity, and it is therefore admired within the community. 5. “Wodden Ears” The Rikbaktsa live in the Amazon rain forest of Brazil. In this community, the men wear wooden disks in their elongated earlobes. They have their ears pierced during a ritual celebration at the age of 14. This rite marks a young man’s transition into adulthood and eligibility for marriage. 6. “Long necks” The Kayan live in Myanmar. Most Kayan women wear brass coils around their necks. The brass coils are placed around young girls’ necks when they reach five years old. As time passes, each coil is replaced with a longer one. 7. Teeth Sharpening Teeth sharpening is a form of body modification that some South Asian women have undergone. It is practiced by the Bagobo women of Mindanao in the Philippines. 8. Gum Tattooing Fulani women tattoo their lower lip and gum with a pigment of charcoal mixed with shea butter. This event marks puberty. 9. Amputation In Dani, New Papua, finger amputation is a form of mourning. Tribesmen cut off their fingers in order to display their grief at funerals. Fingers are cut by close family members such as the mother, the father, or siblings.

A Lagos-based lawyer and industrialist, Mr Chukwudi Atueyi, who was one of those who participated in the meeting between Igbo leaders and Oba of Lagos state, Rilwan Akiolu has explained what really happened. Speaking to Vanguard, Chukwudi said the Oba was only joking when he made the threat to Igbos living in Lagos. Oba Akiolu’s statement has generated a lot of controversies. He had threatened Igbo residents in the mega city to vote Akinwumi Ambode, All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the upcoming governorship elections this Saturday or risk being thrown in the Lagos lagoon. According to him, none of the persons present at the meeting took offense when the Oba made the statement as it was not directed at the whole Igbos in Lagos but jocularly to his Igbo friends that visited him. He said: “cAll the Eze Ndi Igbo honorary in Lagos went to pay HRM solidarity visit on Sunday and I was fortunate to be among those present at the said meeting. What the Oba said was fully and simply directed to only the Igbos present at the meeting who his majesty considers to be very close to him and should understand him well enough. “You know when one talks to his very close friends and subjects, he tends to be very free with them, so he was being very free with those present at the meeting and wanted us to realize how serious and close he takes us and our votes, because he cannot imagine us giving him our words only to turn back and do the very opposite. “He did not force us to the meeting, we were the ones that went to him on solidarity visit, so it would be very evil of us to only go and deceive him there. He only jokingly (at least as it appeared to me then) warned the people present at the meeting who he considers his own people. “He was only addressing the Igbos with him present there whom he considers his own people and he simply observed his culture which we all quite understood and this explains why there was applause and laughter at the end of his speech. We were expected to, thereafter, talk to our people in civilized manner to convince them and canvass for their votes if we truly believe we are capable of doing so. He explained that though the Oba appeared serious, those present at the meeting understood he was joking and that is why they applauded him and made fun of it there. “So I suspect serious politics at play here. I wouldn’t know who recorded the speech and decided to play politics with it. It is most unfair to his majesty to be portrayed in this manner and I think I owe it as a duty to speak up before things get out of hand.’’ Oba Akiolu’s threat to the Igbos in Lagos has been a hot topic of discussion. Some Nigerians have lashed out at him, others have defended him and some others have begged for forgiveness on his behalf. Some of the Igbos in Lagos in reaction to the Oba’s recent threat, have promised not to vote for Ambode in the forthcoming Saturday election, daring Akiolu to go ahead with his threat. Yoruba monarchs have begged Igbo residents in Lagos to forgive Oba Akiolu.

Less than two days to the gubernatorial and House of Assembly polls, the gubernatorial bid of the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has suffered a major setback as key figures in his party in Adamawa state have moved in droves to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Leading the defectors was the former deputy Senate majority leader, Jonathan Zwingina. Others were a former minister of external affairs, Idi Hong, and two serving Senators, Bello Tukur and Ahmed Barata, as well as Sadiq Haske. Even though reports stated that former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ribadu, stepped down his governorship bid temporarily, the Kano state governor and presidential aspirant from the APC, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, has maintained that the PDP has made Ribadu, who was the presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), a laughing stock. He has given an option by the PDP leadership to withdraw from the bye-election and contest the 2015 gubernatorial poll under the umbrella of the party, but Kwankwaso has insisted that: “PDP has now made Nuhu Ribadu to be a laughing stock among PDP stakeholders in Adamawa state after the party dumped him in its recent gubernatorial primaries. “After he left the APC for the PDP, his new party did not find him worthy of its gubernatorial ticket. I am sure the PDP stakeholders in Adamawa are now laughing at him. We sympathise with him.”
