Some APC apologists are now trying to defend governors who left their states to gather in Abuja, only to wave at the president’s plane. They even claim this is a global tradition. Let’s apply logic.

1. Context matters.
Yes, people wave at planes all over the world. But those are usually symbolic occasions: U.S. presidential inaugurations, military send-offs, or ceremonial departures. Governors waving at a departing president’s plane is neither tradition nor necessity.

2. The “window seat” defense.
Saying it’s fine because “aircraft have window seats” is laughable. By that logic, leaders should stand at airports daily to wave at every dignitary flying out. Leadership isn’t about theatrics, it’s about governance.

3. Priorities are skewed.
These governors were not in Abuja for a special farewell ceremony. They were in Abuja for meetings and condolence visits. Tagging along to the airport just to wave adds no value to governance in their states, where urgent issues demand attention.

4.False equivalence with the U.S. inauguration
In the U.S., the outgoing president is escorted once in four years by the incoming leadership as part of a constitutional handover ritual. That is not the same as governors abandoning their posts for symbolic gestures whenever the president travels abroad.

5. Optics matter.
Nigeria is facing economic hardship, insecurity, and governance crises. What citizens see are their governors acting like political cheerleaders instead of problem-solvers. The laughter and ridicule are not about ignorance of tradition—they are about misplaced priorities.

Waving at planes is not “bush.” But governors wasting time and taxpayers’ money on irrelevant optics, while their states struggle, is irresponsible. What’s truly “bush and unexposed” is mistaking sycophancy for statesmanship.
