1. Power truly belongs to the people. In principle, democracy makes the above clear. However, in practice (especially in Nigeria), the people have to own their fate and determine their leaders. This was just demonstrated by Edo people. 2. Synergy over godfatherism. When the people are united and proactive in their actions, any parasitic empire can be defeated. 3. Nigerian elections can be free and fair. This can only be possible when the people and INEC are determined to do that. A case in point: Edo Gubernatorial 2020. 6. INEC portal aids transparency. The INEC portal used in this election allowed masses to have real-time tracking of the results. Such transparency bolsters voters confidence to vote and guide their results until they are uploaded. Thus, this progress should be consolidated on by expanding this portal (website) for national use. 7. US and UK bans seem to be working. 8. Security during election has improved. From what I read and saw during the just concluded election, little or no casualties have been identified as a result of shooting or electoral violence. They may not be perfect yet, but Nigerian security personnel should be applauded. 9. It is not enough to vote/b] After voting, people should protect their votes until they are uploaded to the INEC website, collated and announced. 10. [b]Hold the elected responsible. Now that a candidate has won, the people should hold him responsible to perform. Overall rating for this election: 6.5/10 (the best in a while) Yours sincerely, Observing from Michigan, USA |
Recall, a couple of days back, the Trump administration through the US. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that international students will need to go back to their countries should their schools opt for fully online instruction this fall. However, such policy does not affect foreign students in schools that will operate either via the traditional in-person learning or hybrid mode. In reaction, Harvard and MIT filed a lawsuit today (8th of July, 2020) against the POTUS on legitimacy of this latest policy. Excerpt below: "Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday against the Trump administration over guidelines that would strip international students of their visas if their coursework was entirely online as the U.S. was still reeling with the coronavirus pandemic. The lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement seeks a temporary restraining order and preliminary and permanent injunctive relief against the Trump administration’s policy, which was announced Monday. The lawsuit is also seeking an order vacating the policy and a declaration that the policy is unlawful." Implication: Should the lawsuit becomes successful, international students in the US can stay in the US regardless of the instruction mode adopted by their institutions this fall. Else, foreign students in schools that will use entirely online instruction this fall will have to go back to their countries. Hi all, As evident in the title, this thread is created to serve as a social joint where Nigerian youths residing in the US or Americans of Nigerian descent can meet to interact, socialize and possibly find potential lovers. Of course, this thread is also open to persons that do not identify with any of the above listed categories. Motivation for creating this thread: Obviously, real recognizes and likes real. Of course, we are still the most successful ethnic group in the US! From my two years here in the US, I noticed from my interactions with Nigerian-Americans and fellow Nigerians ( both male and female ) that when it comes to going on a date or being in a relationships, most of us prefer to have Naija/Nigerian-American partner. Thus, this thread could help us broaden our horizon towards finding potential lover. More so, on a lighter note, this thread could also serve to help us get connected to a fun buddy when one travels outside their state. Equally important, is that we can use this thread just to unwind and derive positive energy from one another. NOTE: exchange of political, tribal or racial tantrums is not allowed in this thread. Way to go: If you feel we should promote the goal of this thread (as explained above) please drop few details about you so others can be encouraged. At the least, gender and location (state) will suffice. Feel free to dm anyone you think you wanna know more. PS: I created new account for this thread to eliminate potential bias towards/against me |
