Politics / Amaechi Must Be Probed, Wike Insists by kabnafs(m): 5:39pm On Jun 23, 2015 |
Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday explained why the probe of the administration of his predecessor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, was inevitable. Wike, who spoke in an interview with journalists in Abuja, said Amaechi was going to the media to divert attention from the probe panel he set up. Justifying the probe panel, the governor said, “The essence of the judicial commission does not have to do with witch-haunting anybody, but to understand things we could not have understood. “If he had worked with the transition committee we set up, the committee would have asked one or two questions. No transition committee was set up by government (Amaechi’s administration). |
Politics / Defection Of Jonathan’s Loyalists To APC, Shameless, Insignificant – PDP by kabnafs(m): 5:32pm On Jun 23, 2015 |
The Peoples Democratic Party, Bayelsa State chapter, has described defectors of some ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s loyalists from the party to the All Progressives Congress in the state as shameless and inconsequential. Recently, stream of defections has hit the PDP in Bayelsa State with those cross-carpeting accusing the party of lacking internal democracy, full of betrayals and deceits. But at a news briefing on Tuesday at the PDP secretariat in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, spokesman for the party, Osom Makbere, insisted that those that defected only displayed a show of shame, saying they had no electoral value. Makbere said though the party was not disturbed by recent cases of defection of perceived loyalists of the former President Goodluck Jonathan, the defection was rather unfortunate. He described them as “fair weather politicians”, who were only taking undue advantage of the loss of the PDP at the centre to reposition themselves as APC members so as to curry favour and attract patronage from the APC leadership. The party spokesman said those who claimed to have dumped the PDP due to purported lack of proper governance were beneficiaries of the magnanimity of the present administration of Seriake Dickson. He said, “Dickson appointed them to senior sensitive positions, contract awards and other prerequisites of the system are now turning around to say nothing is happening in the state. “These fellows, who actually have no electoral value and whose fibre are also spent, are creating the impression that they are moving with supporters. That the scanty number of persons present in the so-called defection rallies and ceremonies clearly show that they are lonely voices in the wilderness, in all their units, wards and constituencies across the state in general. “It is rather unfortunate that these fair weather politicians are taking undue advantage of the loss of the PDP at the centre to re-position themselves as APC members so as to curry favour and attract patronage from the APC leadership. “It is most shameful and dis-heartening that these key men of the former President and the PDP who ought to remain faithful in the party in this era of sober reflection as a way of demonstrating their appreciation and eternal gratitude to the party for providing the platform for us (minority of minorities) to produce a President which was rare privilege and honour are now busy jumping ships in passion for greener pastures.” Makbere said the defectors were conscienceless, untrustworthy, disloyal, unfaithful and treacherous in nature. He said it was mind-boggling that some of those characters during the last general elections sought to be candidates of the party for elective positions, which by divine providence, they lost out at the primaries, which clearly indicated that the party declined to field them owing to their low esteem. |

These allowances are unsustainable. They are not based on needs in a depressed economy. “For instance, why pay legislators who already collected over a million naira wardrobe allowance? “It will take a minimum wage earner about two years and five months to earn what legislators earn as wardrobe allowance of N506,600. ”The eighth National Assembly should rightly redirect national resources to priority sectors, such as education, health and road construction. “The assembly must also urgently review the minimum Wage Act of 2010 which, according to the Act, expires next mon....if they cant take a pay cut, they should resign |

Sports / Neymar Blows His Ballon D'or Hopes by kabnafs(m): 6:26pm On Jun 21, 2015 |
The Brazil international appeared ready to challenge for the prestigious individual award but, like Luis Suarez last year, now looks likely to miss out on the podium Jun 21, 2015 09:00:00 By Stefan Coerts in Santiago After an impressive season with Barcelona, Neymar will have fancied his chances of making the podium for the 2015 Fifa Ballon d'Or. Perhaps he was even dreaming of dethroning Cristiano Ronaldo as the best player in the world. Over the past seven years, Lionel Messi and the Real Madrid man have been the only two players to win the prestigious individual award, with the Argentine lifting the individual trophy on four occasions between 2008 and 2014 and the Portugal star emerging victorious three times in that period - two of which have come in the last two years. Neymar seemed a legitimate potential candidate to end that duopoly. The Brazil star had to settle for seventh spot in 2014, yet his contribution to Barcelona's treble win this term made him one of a limited number of contenders to win the award this time around. Indeed, his agent Wagner Ribeiro was adamant earlier this month that he has every chance of being crowned the globe's best within the next two years. "This year Neymar will feature among the three best players in the world," the attacker's representative said. "The award will then come naturally after that, perhaps this year or in 2016." The Copa America appeared to be the perfect stage to set himself apart from Messi. His Barcelona team-mate remains the standout candidate for the 2015 Ballon d'Or but success at international level would have given Neymar's chances a huge boost. Rather than do himself a favour in the race, however, the ex-Santos star has effectively ended his own chances. He made a fine start to the tournament with a man-of-the-match performance versus Peru but, ultimately, his Copa America will only be remembered for his red card and subsequent hissy fit against Colombia. "Neymar has matured and grown as an athlete since his move Europe," claimed Wagner Ribeiro before the tournament. Events in Santiago proved him wrong. There is no denying that he was targeted by Colombia defenders and roughed up right from the start. Jose Pekerman's men were out to provoke their opponents' star player - and did just that in the end. Colombia's actions did not justify Neymar's reaction, though. Skilled players deserve to be protected by referees but at no point did Colombia cross the line. Neymar got the treatment Messi and Ronaldo get on a weekly basis. The Argentine and Portuguese have learned to live with it. The Brazilian, not so much - and he will have to pay the price for his petulance. Neymar's Ballon d'Or chances have disappeared following his Colombia madness. He needed Brazil to win the Copa and he needed to be their main man if he was to have a realistic chance. That ship has sailed following his four-game ban. More so, however, Fifa has shown in the past that it does not take lightly to players bringing the game into disrepute. Luis Suarez did just that in 2014 when he bit Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup and was consequently omitted from the 23-man shortlist compiled by the members of Fifa's Football Committee and a panel of experts from France Football, irrespective of his stunning performances for Liverpool the preceding season. Neymar could await a similar fate. His red card in itself will not keep him off the shortlist but his behaviour in the tunnel after the incident could have severe consequences. The forward not only verbally assaulted referee Enrique Osses, but also attempted to lash out at the Chilean, only to be ushered away by Copa America officials. That could – and perhaps even should – mean trouble, just as it did for Suarez. Just four days ago, the Brazilian was among the favourites to land the Ballon d'Or, even if Messi's bid to wrestle it back from Ronaldo seem unstoppable. One moment of madness later, he seems to have blown his chances altogether. |
Politics / Controversy Over Obasanjo, Saraki Secret Meeting by kabnafs(m): 6:01pm On Jun 21, 2015 |
The visit of the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his Abeokuta residence could be said to be suspicious. The visit, attended by only members of New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) and some senators loyal to Saraki added credence to the insinuation that the nPDP was plotting big in the All Progressives Congress (APC). It is being insinuated that the members of the nPDP led by a former acting National Chairman, of the PDP Kawu Baraje, might soon ditch the APC and rejoin their former party. The claim has meanwhile been denied by Saraki and his supporters. The meeting with Obasanjo has been interpreted to be a preparatory step by the APC chieftains to return to the PDP. Journalists were barred from covering the meeting. Both Obasanjo and Saraki, while emerging from the meeting, laughed while they whispered to each other. Expectedly, none of the parties (Obasanjo and Saraki) wanted to divulge the details of the meeting which began at 9:10am immediately after the Senate President arrived the palatial home of the former President and ended 11:10 am. But, there were some activities that took place prior to the secret meeting . For instance, a day to the meeting, there was an insinuation that, Obasanjo might not attend to the Senate President. To lend credence to this, the former President was said to have travelled out of the country. It was reliably gathered that Obasanjo apparently travelled to Norway, but flew back to Nigeria the previous night to attend the meeting. Many things had sparked off the controversy over the meeting. That Saraki was accompanied by some members of nPDP who defected to APC is believed not to be mere coincidence. Saraki, a former governor of Kwara State and a former member of the PDP, had defected to the APC along with some aggrieved members of the party, including five governors, following irreconcilable differences between them and their former party leaders . Their defection, political analysts believed, aided the victory of the APC at the general elections. But, after their victory, there seems to be disagreements between the group and the APC on the sharing of some positions. Findings showned that the group had wanted one of them to fly the APC flag at the presidential election, but, was blocked. Also, the position of vice-president was not given to the group. After these, another attempt to shove the group aside in the leadership positions of the National Assembly hit the brick wall as one of them emerged Senate President. Saraki ,who emerged the Senate President under controversial circumstances, was believed to have incurred the wrath of Obasanjo and other leaders of the party. Obasanjo, though claimed he was not a member of APC, has ceased to be a member of the PDP and was seen as more of a member of APC. All his ‘boys’ have defected to the APC while he hosts many leaders of the APC, including President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. At the initial stage of the campaign for the election of the Senate President, Saraki was not the preferred candidate of the party, but he refused to step down for the party’s choice, Ahmed Lawan, and he eventually emerged with 57 votes. After his victory, he is believed to be mending fence with some party leaders. Part of the moves was his meeting with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. But his choice to visit Obasanjo and not Tinubu is interpreted as extremely political and strategic. According to an insider who did not want his name mentioned because he was not authorised to speak on the details of the meeting,Saraki’s visit was to lobby Obasanjo. The source further said that the meeting was held to set agenda for the Senate President and to ensure the party embraces him despite his alleged insubordination. According to the source, the meeting also centred on how to handle some sensitive issues at the National Assembly. Obasanjo, according to the source, suggested some way out on the logjam and how to be a successful Senate President. Meanwhile, there was an indication that the leadership of APC might not have forgiven Saraki completely despite its statement of pardon issued recently. The indication was that no APC leaders in the South-West, including the host state, Ogun, was seen with Saraki. The tradition is that the host governor would either be physically present at the meeting or be represented. Apart from that, the Senate President would also pay a visit to the governor. None of these happened. The governor of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, was said to have travelled out of Abeokuta shortly before the meeting between Saraki and Obasanjo ended to attend a funeral ceremony in Ijebu. This was unlike during the visit of a former Senate Present, Senator David Mark, to Obasanjo when many of the party (PDP) leaders were present. Mark paid a visit to the governor who was not even a member of his party. It was reliably gathered that there might have been a directive by the APC leadership to stay away from Saraki pending the resolution of some issues. The party, according to the findings, may have reached out to Amosun and others in the South-West prior to the Saraki meeting with Obasanjo. The Senate President, when asked to comment on the alleged disobedience to the APC directive on the choice of the candidate for the Senate President seat, kept mum. However, he denied any rift between him and his party, saying the relationship was cordial. |
