Dear poster, I have a 2003 VW passat with the same problem you talking about. Can you please introduce your mechanic tome? I am planning on converting mine also to manual because I can't afford to abandon or sell this car now, its a machine, I love it.

Volks is a nice ride especially Passat very rugged! I would not have offered mine for sales too if I can do with the fix...u can call my number to help u pout with details of the mechanic

I'm using a volks jetter bora (american spec ) I once had challenge with my automatic gear box since I convert it to manual I have been enjoying my car .
so with a good mechanic the car can be back to life

200k cannot do sir, at d current gear status, it can but I cannot be so sure it will not affect another thing when its moving at d speed of not more than 90k/hr with a particular selection, hence d reason I said its probably not a gear but wiring problem, I have got no good rewire here and that was d reason we are saying d worst scenerio is we change to manual gear @ 40k(which I would have done DAT if I could afford it for now and sell it @ more exorbitant price. Quoting the person I placed d car on his care, 'selling this care at 300k is to d advantage of the new owner that buys it'
And can d car travel to abeokuta with d gear probm?

thats what most mechanic would say but when finally given the job for the convertion dey totally mess up...the volkswagen passat 1998-2003 model automatic are known with gear issues, they don't run beyond 60km/hr after gear is heated up, this has resulted to people abandoning theirs after spending so much on repairs without any positive result....some good mechanic can actually do some conversion that works but this might involve some readjustment and cutting some components like shaft and rewelding which most times are not properly done....my observation though.

@leonn thanks for the candid observation which is appreciated. However , the mechanic am using is highly reliable (quoted as best in Volks where i stay) and I personally trust him with his words. As said earlier, I would have personally convert the car because I trust him but, I don't have such amount at my disposal for now decided to sell it.

Gear box? hmmm!

I think we should always try and appreciate truth than someone painting black white and going out there deceiving people. We could not ascertain it as a gearbox, a good rewire should be able to fix it, them we talked about a worst scenerio of changing d gearbox which my mechanic had already said 40k will do. If u then budget and buy the car for 340k, I don't think that is a bad deal bro !

My Volkswagen Passat 1999 Will Not Start...pls Help by kabworld(m): 9:48am

Last week I was about to travel but my water pipe was leaking so I needed to branch a nearby mechanic workshop to fix it and was planning to fix my gearsit too. So I drove down to d mechanic to fix it. After fixing d water system he was also trying to fix d gearsit to. So while he was under d car he instructed me to change d gear from park to drive which I Did. So i started the engine, the engine started normally but While I was changing d gear from park to drive, I heard a sound (inside )d gear i guess and reported to d mechanic which he said maybe I Did not press d break firmly. The sound repeated itself while moving from drive back to park. Then I switch off the engine, removed d key thinking everything was still fine only for him to finish about 20mins later, started the engine, making initial cranking sound but didn't power d engine again.
So various things habe been done so far like,
Cleaning d plugs and others.
Some tests carried out include
Timebelt check normal
Nozzles normal flashing
Plugs fires normally with pressure
Fuel pump normal
Cylinder with valves not bent
Sensor working and magnetic even changed to another one
battery is a good one
So please any gpost suggestions to help unravel d mystery of the engine not starting.
