Her full name is Oluwanishola Ogudugu. She was a student of the Houdegbe North American University, Cotonou,Benin Republic. She was listed as one of the most popular girls on Campus by The Dynamix Youth awards 2009. Sources who schooled with her in Benin republic reveal she was the hottest item on campus then and it was unsurprising when rumors started flying around that she was pregnant for the popstar. she got cozy with Wizkid after a performance in the school. The dark skinned beauty who resides with her parents in Magodo is now rounding off her NYSC program somewhere in Lagos. Shola is the same age with Wizkid (23) and after the birth of her son, Bolu, Wizkid denied being the father until a paternity test proved him wrong. This caused a lot of friction between shola's family and Wizkid's, but funny enough things have calmed down now cause whenever Tife, as he is fondly called is at wizzy's family home, everybody is always happy. They shower the child a lot of love, and my source reveals that Wizkid does not joke with Tife...he loves the boy unconditionally and even makes surprise visits to his baby mama's home in Magodo to see his son. She is currently dating a guy who works at a network provider firm. http://www.naijapicks.com/2013/05/all-you-need-to-know-about-wizkids-baby.html

This is a welcome idea considering that so many go to India to get such simply because there is no functional heart surgery centre in Nigeria and they also get to spend more than triple this amount for such escapades. Our health system is really in disarray, infact we don't have any in Nigeria. The number of people that can afford this can never be a true representation of the number that needs. The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Usen Effiong, for posing as a medical doctor and consulting for the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for months. The State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Etim Dickson, said Effiong, an indigene of Ukot Usung Itam, in Itu LGA was caught based on intelligence report. He said, “The police arrested Effiong in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital impersonating a medical doctor. The Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Akwa Ibom State branch, Dr. John Udobang denied ever knowing the young man. He is not a member of the association.” The police had investigated Effiong and found out that he was actually impersonating a medical doctor. Dr. Udobang said that he received a call from the Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, UUTH, Dr. Sunday Udo on the activities of Effiong. Dr. Udobang explained that he went to the teaching hospital where he interviewed the suspect and found him with stethoscope and sphygmomanometer (blood pressure apparatus). He said, “We also found some prescriptions and forms that he wanted to fill to become a member of the association of resident doctors. “Later, when they went to look for him, he was found in the doctor’s consulting room eating. He has confessed that he is not a doctor, and has not finished his school certificate, and has been coming there to consult in the last two months.” Asked how it was possible for an SS II dropout to be consulting in a teaching hospital, Dr. Udobang replied that people used to see him but did not know his intention. “It was after one of the younger doctors saw him and asked the Dean who he was that they started investigating him.” By Etim Ekpimah / Punch |
Please let us consider this: 1.The man may have spent time and resources to learn how to play piano. 2.He probably does not have any other job apart from this. 3.Usually,men of God pay instrumentalists for their services. 4.If they are really good, they(MOG) usually promise them better packages to keep them. Not minding,I feel the guy crossed the line by distrupting the church service but who knew his mental state as at that time. |

President Goodluck Jonathan has been decribed as lacking in capacity for governance by the vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Senator Babajide Omoworare. Addressing journalists at the National Assembly Complex yesterday, Omoworare (ACN, Osun East) said “the president is not doing enough. I’ve repeatedly said on the floor of the Senate that I personally have challenges with the president’s capacity to administer Nigeria. He may be a good-natured man, but governing Nigeria takes more than being good-natured. I’m not a fan of former President Olusegun Obasanjo who sometimes does some self-glorification, but Obasanjo, even if wrong, was taking decisions, but the incumbent president doesn’t take decisions and doesn’t even understand the rudiments of governance. “As a senator, I don’t have light in my houses in Ife and Lagos. I know we still import fuel to favour some people…we’ve spent trillions of naira on fuel subsidy. These trillions would’ve been used to set up refineries, whether done by the government or by individuals; it doesn’t matter to the electorate. Fuel can sell for less than N40 per litre in Nigeria if there are enough refineries,” he said. The legislator, who called on Senators to go beyond party boundary and do what is best in the interest of Nigerians by impeaching Mr Jonathan, said, “the worst we can do to the president is impeachment. How many PDP senators will allow you to impeach him irrespective of how bad some of us feel he is? You can’t even raise it, if you do, they (PDP senators) would shout you down. But there must be a limit to politics. As senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, if it’s in the interest of Nigeria as a whole that we take a decision, let’s take it.” http://www.naijapicks.com/2013/03/impeach-jonathan-now-in-interest-of.html?m=1 |

Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, the controversial founding pastor of Kingsway International Christian Centre based in United Kingdom is not new to controversy. He swims from one controversy to another especially with British authorities who had at one time or another indict him in cases bordering on fraudulent activities. Recently, the charity commission banned the man of God from dipping his hands into the coffers of the church funds without approval from the Charity Commission before making any more investments on behalf of the church. The order was made by the commission as part of a statutory inquiry it started into the charity last year after concerns were raised about its financial controls. It is the second inquiry into the charity by the commission, which concluded in 2005 that there had been a “possible misapplication of funds” by the senior pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, who agreed to repay £200,000 to the charity. The church is based in East London and claims an attendance of up to 12,000 people a week at its main building in Walthamstow. It has several other branches and its income in 2010/11 was £9.4 million. In 2010 it lost a planning bid to convert a former Bingo Hall in Crystal Palace into a new church. The new inquiry, which is continuing, is mentioned in the charity’s latest accounts filed with the commission, which reveal that it gave £5 million to a former trustee, the former professional footballer Richard Rufus, to invest in the financial markets. The accounts say the investments, made in two installments of £3 million in 2009/10 and £2 million the following year, reaped returns of £836,720 in the first year and £500,000 in the second. It also says that in the wake of the commission’s investigation, trustees sought professional advice and took “the prudent step of providing for losses on the capital amount invested.” Nick Brooks, head of not-for-profit at accountancy firm Kingston Smith, said it was not clear from the latest set of accounts if the £5 million investment had been lost, but there appeared to be some doubt about whether the charity would get it back. He said there were wider questions posed by the situation such as what type of evaluations had been taken before trustees agreed to the investments. A spokeswoman for the Charity Commission said: “The Charity Commission opened statutory section 8 inquiries into the charity of the Kingsway International Christian Centre on 11 February 2011 following concerns raised about the charity’s governance and internal financial controls, in particular relating to investments. “The commission is in contact with the trustees concerning this matter. As a precaution, the charity has to obtain prior written permission from the commission before making investments, which does not prevent the charity from conducting normal day-to-day activity.” KICC was previously investigated by the commission under its old name of King’s Ministries Trust. The investigation lasted three years and cost £1.2 million. The 2005 commission report, which said there had been a “possible misapplication of funds”, found that the charity spent £120,000 celebrating Ashimolowo’s birthday and that he used the charity’s Visa card to buy a timeshare apartment in Florida. Elizabeth Martin, a Ph.D student in Missouri University's science department in the College of Arts and Science conducted a study to find that one's profile may indicate their mental health. Her research team asked participants to print and submit their Facebook activity, which was then correlated with their actual statements. In a news release of the Missouri University, Matin says; Therapists could possibly use social media activity to create a more complete clinical picture of a patient. The beauty of social media activity as a tool in psychological diagnosis is that it removes some of the problems associated with patients' self-reporting. For example, questionnaires often depend on a person's memory, which may or may not be accurate. By asking patients to share their Facebook activity, we were able to see how they expressed themselves naturally. Even the parts of their Facebook activities that they chose to conceal exposed information about their psychological state. The results of the posts submitted by the participants showed their mental health. The people who do not post much on Facebook or may have less Facebook friends may show signs of social anhedonia which means that such people do not feel pleasure in interacting with different people, in other words they are loners and are happy with themselves. Some participants censored some of their activities showing signs of paranoia. http://www.naijapicks.com/2013/03/your-facebook-profile-reflects-your.html?m=1 |
The Obama administration has declared war on the Catholic Church and other Christian denominations in the US. The soon to be implemented "Affordable Care Act" has several provisions in it which will adversely affect religious organizations. The US government is requiring religious organizations to comply with this law, some of which violates their religious beliefs. The law requires all employers to provide health insurance coverage for services such as abortion and birth control. Even if the employer is a religious organization, it will be required to provide these, under penalty of fine and or imprisonment. Before this law was passed, employers were allowed to choose the health care plans for their employees. Churches, Christian Hospitals and schools, chose not to provide these services which were contrary to their beliefs. Employees picked which plan suited their needs best. A woman over 50 need not pay for contraceptive or abortion services as she will probably not use them. No more choosing what is best for us or our families, now the US Government will tell us what health insurance we receive, and what each plan MUST provide. The law passed by the Obama administration is nothing more than an attack on the Catholic Church and organized religion itself. The Affordable Care Act is an attempt by our government to weaken religious organizations, gain control over one seventh of the US economy, and get more people dependent on the US government for their daily needs. The fact that the Catholic Church is the largest provider of healthcare in America, outside of the US government, means nothing. It does not matter that the Catholic Church operates 600 hospitals and 1400 long term care and other facilities that provides health care regardless of a person's ability to pay. The Catholic Hospitals have operated freely for over 100 years in America, without ever having to compromise their religious beliefs. This is just the beginning of the war on religious organizations and traditional values from our government. The president has come out and supported homosexual marriage as well. The US government is already pressuring military chaplains to marry homosexuals. Soon they will force Catholic and Christian schools to hire homosexual teachers or face discrimination charges. It is such a shock to see the US government attacking the Church, while the Russian government defends it. The jailing of the Pussy Riot band for desecrating an Orthodox Church, the recent law passed by the Duma, prohibiting homosexual propaganda aimed at children. Laws protecting the unborn are being passed, as well as removing government funding for some abortions. These are positive signs for Russia. Many in the west will decry these acts, but they show that the Russian government is not afraid to defend the Church's position, not because of a religious preference, but because it is the right thing to do for a nation to prosper. It will help put Russia on solid footing for the future. This is just the opposite of what is going on in the US at the present time. The US became the richest country in the world because it allowed religious freedom, protected individual and property rights, and its laws and standards of behavior were based on traditional Judeo-Christian values. As a nation, we prospered for over 200 years because of this. In the last 40 years, we have abandoned these principles and look where we are now. We borrow hundreds of billions of dollars each year from many countries just to pay our expenses. Our nation is bankrupt financially and morally. No nation on this earth was capable of destroying us militarily, so we have set out to destroy ourselves through moral decay, or as the late Senator Daniel Moynihan called it "Defining Deviancy Down". When I was a young boy, we were taught in the Catholic Church to pray for the conversion of Russia from Communism. With the US government attacking our churches and religious organizations, maybe we should start asking the Russian people to pray for the conversion of America. By Michael P Gardner / Pravda |

By Abdulrahman Abdulmalik Friday’s presentation of two SUVs to Nigerian hip pop star, TuFace Idibia, and wife, Annie Macaulay, by Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Akpabio, at their traditional wedding, has got a lot of Nigerians railing at the profligacy of public officials. Mr. Akpabio had stunned guests that thronged the Apostolic High School, Esit Urua Community venue, along Eket-Ibeno Road, for the traditional wedding of the celerity couple with the announcement of a donation of two brand new Toyota Prado SUVs to them. The lucky couple are also to travel in the luxury of the company of 29 delegates from Akwa Ibom to the United Arab Emirate, UAE, courtesy of the governor, who also promised to throw the state’s treasury open to bankroll an all-expense paid trip for the white wedding scheduled for March 23 in Dubai. The Eket-Ibeno Road, which has remained in a bad state for a long time, is to be fully rehabilitated before the next child dedication ceremony of the couple, the governor said. Although a couple of loyalists commended the governor, commonly derisively called “the uncommon transformer” in the state, for his reckless spending of state funds, a cross-section of other Nigerians have described the gesture as “misplaced priority”, “wasteful” and “abuse of public trust” in the management of state resources. No official justification The state Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, did not respond to calls and text messages by PREMIUM TIMES for official explanation regarding why the governor made the extravagant gesture in a state where salaries to civil servants are known to be consistently irregular. A supporter of the governor, Egondu Okorie, was excited about the governor’s gesture, expressing disappointment in his Facebook page at those he said were making “shallow minded comments”, which he noted would not happen in civilized societies. Another supporter, Ikazoboh Victor, blamed poverty for the comments by some of the governor’s critics, who condemned the donation, saying that “there is no big deal about just two SUVs as wedding gift”. A self-serving ego trip But not everybody is impressed, with some describing the gifts as outrageous. “This is absolute rubbish”, an apparently angry Mary Udom said. “These (Tuface and wife) are no poor people. I don’t see why Akpabio is doing such a thing. If it were an ordinary man’s wedding, he (Akpabio) won’t even send a gift, talkless of giving cars.” For Obo Effanga, Governance Manager, Action Aid Nigeria, the governor’s action is embarrassing, as it defeats the purpose for good governance, particularly in the allocation of resources. “This is very embarrassing indeed! If governance is about being in a position to take decisions in the interest of the people of the state, when a governor allocates public resources to individuals because of their closeness to him, how does this enhance that purpose and the interest of the ordinary citizens in the state, on whose behalf the governor claimed he was making the donation?,” Mr Effanga said. “It is even awkward that he donated two different cars to the couple, who, by virtue of their wedding, are supposed to be one in line with the marriage principle. He could as well have donated two different houses to them, as if he wants them to live separately! “If the governor was doing this with his personal resources, which is very doubtful, nobody would be complaining. As if that is not enough, the state is going to bear the cost of 29 officials travelling to Dubai for the wedding. “This amount could have been enough to do something more useful to the society. It could buy several volumes of books for University of Uyo that has been crying of funding challenges. That amount could sponsor a lot drugs that could be dispensed to citizens free,” he added. Spokesman for the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Rotimi Fashakin, said it is such profligate and reckless spending of available resources at their disposal by governors from the Niger Delta region that has made the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, to suffer a long delay at the National Assembly till today. According to Mr. Fashakin, if it were his personal resources, Mr. Akpabio would not do what he did, but having realised that Akwa Ibom earns a lot, based on 13 percent derivation, he could afford to spend on anything that catches his fancies. He said, “This type of financial recklessness from governors of oil rich states is another reason militating against the passage of the PIB. The 10 per cent being proposed for the host communities is seen as superfluous if this type of unimaginable imprudence becomes second nature for some of these governors. This type of anti-people expenditure is only symptomatic of a leader that emerged through the subversion of the people’s will and desire.” For Tope Fasua, an Abuja-based public affairs commentator, such behaviours are clearly as a result of lack of vision by our leaders. “The Bible says the people perish for lack of vision and knowledge. Akpabio lacks vision, because he is on an ego trip. He thinks he has arrived. But, the truth is that despite the huge oil money that goes to the state every month, the rate of poverty still affects 80 per cent of the population. “Nobody is thinking about the fact that the price of oil could crash. That is what economists call the tragic choice in Akpabio’s behaviour. All that would unravel soon.” Calculating cost versus value index A return ticket, Lagos-Dubai-Lagos, on Emirates flight is about $806 (about N126,542.00) for one person; and when multiplied by at least 35 people, made up of the 29 delegates, the couple and their parents, or representatives, the total cost for tickets and other protocol arrangements, like visa application fees, would be about N5million. It is not clear if the governor would prefer a chartered flight arrangement or the use of his private jet to guarantee executive comfort for the delegation. To take care of the transport and accommodation of the delegation, it is not also clear if the protocol arrangement would opt for an Executive Limousine option and a top of the range hospitality arrangement befitting the status of a pop star by going for a $2,000 per room per night lodging in a five-star hotel, which might cost about $300,000 (about N47 million) for at least a four-day stay. Other exigencies, including at least $3,000 for each delegate as estacode ($105,000), about N16.5million, and other bookings for the wedding proper and reception, would gulp about N10million. Conservative estimates show that by the time the couple returns to Nigeria at the end of the trip to Dubai, a minimum of N100million, including the cost of the two SUVs, would have gone from the state treasury for the project. For Mr. Effanga, a donation of N100million to the University of Uyo would have gone a long way in relieving the university l of its funding constraint, which Vice Chancellor Comfort Ekpo, told the visiting Senate Committee on Education last week is affecting the development of the institution. “If the amount to be spent on the ego trip to Dubai were to be invested in the provision of books to school libraries, medical facilities in hospitals or boreholes to communities in the state, including the musician’s new wife’s village, many citizens would derive more utilitarian value from the expenditure,” the activist noted. |
The Military yesterday blamed the crash of the Nigerian Navy Augusta Helicopter marked NN07, which came down in the bushes of Okoroba area of Bayelsa State, on human and material error. A statement from the Nigerian Navy said the report, which was an interim one, was released by the Accident Investigation Board (AIB) constituted by the Nigerian Air Force at the instance of the Navy to ascertain the cause of the fatal crash in which the Governor of Kaduna State, Dr. Patrick Yakowa and the former national security adviser, General Andrew Azazi, were killed. The statement signed by Commodore Kabiru Aliyu was silent on what “human and material failure” could mean to a layman but Daily Sun learnt from other sources that the human aspect of the error could be linked to some things the air wing of the force was supposed to do but did not do before the ill-fated flight, while the material error was linked to issues concerning the state of the engine before the flight. The statement by the Navy reads: “The Accident Investigation Board (AIB) constituted by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) at the instance of the Nigerian Navy to ascertain the cause of the fatal crash involving the Nigerian Navy Augusta helicopter, which occurred on December 15, 2012 has submitted an interim report to the Naval Headquarters. “The investigation, which was conducted by aviation experts in collaboration with the manufacturers, Augusta Westland, has stated that the cause of the crash could either be human error or material failure or a combination of both. “However, to determine the actual cause of the crash there would be the need to tear down the engine of the helicopter to carry out detailed forensic analysis. This aspect of the investigation will be carried out by Turbomeca, the manufacturers of the engine.” The report said, “it is important to emphasise that an independent police report has equally ruled out sabotage as a possible cause of the crash. Further information on the investigation would be made public when available.” The helicopter had on December 15, 2012, during a shuttle flight from Okoroba in Bayelsa State to Port Harcourt in Rivers State, crashed killing the pilot, co-pilot, General Azazi and his aide and the Kaduna State governor and his aide. The crashed Nigerian Navy helicopter, it was reported, had flown 1,704 flight hours before the crash that claimed six lives. The Navy had in a statement after its preliminary investigation, said the helicopter had more than 80 flight hours before its next scheduled routine maintenance. Augusta 109 helicopter is one of three Nigerian Navy choppers used in vectoring ships for interdiction and interception operations. The Nigerian Navy employs helicopters to enhance its maritime capability by utilising the speed and long range of the helicopters. On the fateful day of the crash, the Navy had assigned the chopper to fly politicians to and from the coastal Okoroba village in Bayelsa where an aide of President Goodluck Jonathan, Oronto Douglas, hosted a burial ceremony for his late father. Witnesses said the chopper burst into flames before crashing into the creeks with its victims. The navy had dismissed “engine problems”, saying the chopper was certified to fly by a “certified technical support engineer.” “Nigerian Navy helicopters, including the NN07 that crashed, are properly maintained and serviced regularly in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications,” Chief of Training and Operations at Naval Headquarters, Emmanuel Ogbor, a rear admiral, said. By Philip Nwosu & Ubong Ukpong / The Sun News Do you think it was necessary releasing this inconclusive report when they could have just waited till they conclude their investigation? |
Between the two genders, it has always been the general consensus that women are the more complicated, secretive and mysterious ones. It seems, though, that each gender has their own level of mystery because the truth is that if you're a woman, you will never really entirely understand what it means to be a man and the same applies to a woman; she will never entirely understand what it means to be a man. Chris Abani, a contributor at O Magazine, wrote a short article to shed a little light on what men are keeping from women. His thoughts are below: That women are mysterious and unknowable is something every young man grows up believing. Men, on the other hand, never think of themselves as mysterious or confusing, and we are often at a loss as to why women want to figure us out. But since you asked: When you say we don’t really talk to you or reveal ourselves to you, we wish you knew just how much we have had to suppress about our desires, pains, fears, and vulnerability over the years to conform to the script of masculinity that we are given. Sometimes we don’t open up because we are afraid of what we will find. We are also afraid that if you see who we really are, in all our flawed humanity (and not the flaws that annoy you, like being untidy or driving fast), you won’t like us. Men do communicate, often very directly, but women sometimes cannot accept how simple what we have to say is. We seldom play games—we aren’t that sophisticated. If we don’t call you for a couple of days after a date, it is because either we are afraid you will think we are stalkers (and we will call on day three) or we aren’t into you. That’s all there is. We are as nervous as you are about s*x; I don’t care what you’ve heard. Your anatomy is a mystery that nobody bothers explaining to us. Even when we think we have mastered one woman’s body, every body is different. We feel inadequate if we can’t satisfy you in bed, and since no one has told us what to do with feelings of inadequacy, we project them onto you. Sad but true. We are very insecure about how we look and what you really think about us, and we are excited when you do small, nice things for us like make coffee or come with us to the barber or just buy us a good book. We’ve been trained never to show this side to you, but it is there. We are not subtle creatures. You might think that when you play with your hair in our presence, we know that means you like us. We don’t know for sure. Men who do are bad men (sorry, guys!). And anything you’ve been told about playing hard to get is wrong. We crave cuddling and hand-holding, maybe even more than you do. We are desperate to please you because we know you are far sexier and more beautiful than you will ever admit to yourself, and we’re confused (but extremely happy) as to why you like us. Here’s the thing: You rescue us every day in small, quiet ways, so why not in this way? Let us into your mystery, tell us how you would like to be loved, show us how to see you, really see you. Wizkid promised to sign new acts to the label. ‘‘I have great acts I’m going to be putting on through Starboy Music, so please continue supporting me and I’ll never let you guys down. Wizkid made interesting comments when asked on his current relationship with former label E.M.E “We’re still cool, EME is still family, most definitely‘, he answered. Last month, Wizkid dropped the bombshell that he was leaving E.M.E, the label that threw him in stardom to “start all over again.” No one has been able to ascertain the reason for the fracas even though there is wide speculation that the terms of his contract with E.M.E is the culprit. But unlike the case of D’banj and Don Jazzy during the Mo’hits war when interviews from both sides had substantially cleared the air neither Wizkid nor E.M.E is yet to speak to the press on the issue. Los Angeles - Rihanna and Chris Brown have reportedly split over Drake. The Stay singer and the R&B star are said to have had a falling out at the Grammy Awards when Chris caught his girlfriend texting her ex, rapper Drake, with whom he had a violent brawl in New York's W.i.P club last June. A source told The Sun newspaper: "Chris and Rihanna had a big bust-up at the Grammys over Drake. She was messaging him and Chris saw and it didn't go down well. "Since that night they have barely spoken and have been doing their own things. For now they have split up but they will probably make up at some point." The couple were snapped looking unhappy as they left the big event and sat at opposite ends of Los Angeles' Playhouse Nightclub last week. Ongoing feud The 24-year-old beauty refused to sit anywhere near her beau - who is still on probation for assaulting her in 2009 - despite confirming the pair were once again an item last month. Chris then tellingly spent Valentine's Day partying solo with a mystery brunette. The 23-year-old star has had an ongoing feud with Drake since last June, when the rapper allegedly refused Chris' peace offering of a bottle of champagne in a club and returned it with a note reading, "I'm fucking the love of your life [Rihanna], deal with it". A huge fight broke out between both their entourages and innocent bystanders were hurt. French model Romain Julien has now filed lawsuits against them for his injuries, but both claim they were not responsible for the fight and want the other to pay any damages if the model wins his suit. All of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Zayed Khalifa’s forty wives got their period at the exact same time, various Arab media are reporting. In what is being described as one of the most unfortunate events in recent UAE history, the PMS calendars of the Sheik’s wives became synchronized and created a terrible headache for everyone involved. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Zayed Khalifa, one of the richest men in the United Arab Emirates, first heard about the disaster from his eunuch, sources within the palace report. In the meantime, the troubled man managed to answer a few quick questions from media representatives. “Back when I only had two wives I could maybe handle a couple of mood swinging, bloated, depressed, angry and resentful chocolate-eating monsters at a time, but with just one more than that you’re as good as dead. I was convinced that this would never happen with all forty of them at the same time – I mean, what are the odds?” the grief-stricken ruler asked. Palace representatives said that the harem would be put under quarantine for the next several days in order to avert a greater catastrophe, and that the Sheikh would do the same thing any other man would do in similar circumstances, “hide somewhere until it all passes.” One of the Sheikh’s wives spoke to reporters about the mood inside the palace. “How is it even possible to cycle through every human emotion in one day? It’s so exhausting. And we get no support from our husband. None of us even give a damn if he comes back unless he brings us mass quantities of chocolate covered peanut butter balls,” Adara al-Sadah, wife number 28, was quoted as saying. The Arab billionaire stated in the end that “having a harem can easily transform from being every man’s sweetest dream to every man’s worst nightmare.” By The Global Edition |
By Sahara reporters Justice Abubakar Talba, the Federal High Court, Abuja, judge who sentenced John Yusufu, former director in the Police Pension Office, to two years in prison with an option of N250,000 fine on each of the three counts, breached an agreement reached by parties in the case. In the controversial ruling delivered on January 28, Mr. Talba sentenced Yusufu, who pleaded guilty to three of 20 counts charges bordering on embezzlement of over N23 billion, to two years in prison but gave the accused person an option of fine. The ruling drew anger from many Nigerians, including legal experts, who believe that granting an option of fine for such a monumental fraud would encourage corruption by public officers. But Justice Talba’s judgment equally shocked parties in the case, particularly the prosecution team. Icirnigeria.org authoritatively gathered that the prosecution and defense lawyers actually had an agreement on specific outcomes of the case which included a custodian sentence which was breached by the judge. Mr. Yusufu, it was learnt, had approached officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC who investigated the embezzlement case against him and others seeking a deal. The accused person’s offer was that he be made a prosecution witness. He promised to expose all the rot that had gone on at the Police Pension Office for years and testify against his former colleagues for a deal that would ostensibly free him. However, the EFCC did not take the bait, arguing that its investigations had been so thorough that it had unearthed all that transpired in the pension office. It argued further that Mr. Yusufu had been neck deep in the criminal diversion of pensioners’ funds to be let free. However, Mr. Yusufu and his lawyers came up with another offer, a plea bargain deal which would entail him pleading guilty to lesser charges in order to get a light sentence. When the EFCC and its lawyers were approached with the deal, the commission insisted that two conditions being met. First, it said that Yusufu had to give full disclosure of his assets and forfeit everything he had acquired with the money he got from pension funds. Also, the commission and its legal team insisted that the accused person must receive custodian sentence, meaning that he had to spend some time in jail. A source in the commission said that the anti-graft agency considered the plea bargain deal because if it could get Mr. Yusufu to agree to voluntarily declare and forfeit his ill-gotten assets, it would save it time and resources. Besides, the commission reasoned, if it could get one of the pension thieves to plead guilty, it would strengthen the case against the others who had pleaded not guilty. In any case, prosecutors and investigators also reasoned, a key goal of the whole case was to retrieve what had been stolen, so it was fine by them if Mr. Yusufu was offering to relinquish his loot willingly. On its part, the defense team agreed to these conditions but pleaded that the accused person be charged with lesser offences that would carry minimal sentence. That was why Mr. Yusufu was charged under Section 309 of the Penal code, the maximum sentence of which is two years in jail. Our source disclosed that when the two parties reached an agreement on the details of the deal, they approached Justice Talba. Although no formal agreement was written or signed by any of the parties, the two side agreed with the judge that first, the accused person would declare and forfeit all assets he acquired with proceeds of the funds he stole. Secondly, the parties agreed that he would be given custodian sentence with no option of fine. The EFCC lawyers were very insistent on this, arguing that in spite of the plea bargain, the accused must serve a jail term to serve as deterrent to others. It was however left to the discretion of the judge whether to apply the maximum sentence of two years or not. However, prosecution lawyers were shocked on February 28 as the judge sentenced Mr. Yusufu to the maximum of two years in prison but with an option of fine which was not in the agreement. Some in the prosecution team alleged that Mr. Yusufu and his lawyers went behind to “induce” the judge to give him an option of fine. After his sentencing, Mr. Yusuf drove home a free man after paying the total of N750k imposed on him by the judge. However, the convict was mistaken if he thought he had succeeded in playing a fast one on the prosecution and the EFCC. What he did not know was that investigators had discovered that he did not make full disclosure of his assets and finances as an account controlled by him was discovered. He was discovered to own a company, SY-AGlobal Services Limited, into which he had kept N250 million. Two other account controlled by him were also found containing N29 million and N10million. Based on this, Mr. Yusufu was rearrested the next day after he gained his dubious freedom and slammed with a four – count charge of false declaration of assets before Justice Adamu Bello of the Federal High Court, Abuja. Under the EFCC (establishment) Act 2004, the new charge against Mr. Yusufu carries a five years prison sentence without any option of fine. Section 27 (30 of the Act states: “Any Person who – (a) knowingly fails to make full disclosure of his assets and liabilities ;or (b) knowingly makes a declaration that is false; or (c) fails, neglects or refuses to make a declaration or furnishes any information required, in the Declaration of Assets Form; commits an offence under this Act and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of five years.” Justice Bello ordered the accused person to be remanded in Kuje prison pending the March 1 date for commencement of trial. |
Lagos - The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Wednesday said that commercial driver’s licences would no longer be issued to aapplicants below the age of 25 years. Mr Nseobong Akpabio, Lagos State Sector Commander, FRSC, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. Akpabio said that the step was to get rid of underage drivers and sanitise the profession. “An underage commercial driver has no commitment and may see driving as one of those jobs that could be toyed with. “Many road crashes, especially with articulated vehicles, were usually traced to motor-boy drivers, who were without experience,” he said. He explained that driving a commercial vehicle should not be taken with levity because it involve lives and goods. Akpabio called on transport unions, parents, as well as passengers, to assist the commission in checking underage drivers in order to achieve the united Nation’s Decade of Action for Safer Road Users. “Road crash involving a commercial bus may jeopardise the existence or progress of 10 families and if it involved freight vehicle, it will affect the progress of the company. “Drivers are very important as they can either mar or make a person, because if there is safe arrival, goals and aims can be achieved, but in a reversed case, such goals and aims have been cut short,” he said. He said that the approved minimum age of 25 years for obtaining commercial driver’s licence would help in checking road crashes usually caused by underage drivers. He urged commercial drivers to start processing their licence now to avoid last minute rush. He advised them to avoid patronising touts and go through the normal process of obtaining the product. NAN reports that the new commercial driver’s licence -- class-E -- was flagged off in Lagos on Dec. 31, 2012 to identify underage and unqualified drivers. NAN |
