The CBN governor said the currency swap deal between the Central Bank of Nigeria and the People’s Bank of China will ease pressure in the foreign exchange market by the reduction in reliance in a third currency for trade settlement between Nigeria and China.
To me, Nigeria has just incentivised importations from China. With the Chinese yuan readily available which is what this deal will facilitate, Nigerian importers will be encouraged to import items from China which would ultimately strengthen the economy of China at the expense of ours.
I would have loved Nigeria to enter into strategic partnerships on technological transfers rather than this swap deal which I believe will further broaden the balance of trade deficit between the two countries.
This policy, if not well managed will cause a heavy reliance on Chinese products which will geometrically boost the value of yuan and confer on it a "Dollar status" due to the excessive demand for the currency.
I am not a doomsday prophet but I want Nigeria to enter this deal with two eyes open.
