KingJhean:
That's a very good advice but actually every thing in life is allotted a particular time from birth to old age, when you fail to do something at its time, you suffer the consequences so when society reminds of the fact that you are not married it is often not an attack but a genuine show of concern

"..when are you even getting married?" that question resonated in my head as I dropped the call. That was what my uncle asked as we conversed on phone.

This has become a dreaded question not only to me but in the life of every young adult in today’s world.

There is a way the society has programmed us, stereotyped us. We were born, we grow, go to school, graduate, get a job, get married and produce children who will be brought up to follow same pattern.

So when you are in your twenties or early thirties and you are yet to have a ring on your finger, questions start coming and it is tiring quite frankly.

From parents, friends, acquaintances, colleagues or even random people to total strangers; we have heard stories of how this question pop out in conversations, sometimes a little too frequently. I understand and accept that most times this is borne out of love and genuine concern; it can sometimes be spiteful and even unwelcoming. So before you pop that question to someone, be sure to understand their emotional standing so as not to leave them wounded by your words.

Life seems to have changed in recent years from when most men and women tie their knot in the early or middle twenties and occasionally late twenties to a state where men are in their late twenties to thirties and are yet to commit to marriage.

What is the reason for this behaviour?

Take a quick survey of the eligible bachelors you know and find out the reason for the delay in walking the isle, most will say financial before mentioning the right spouse. It seems we are in a time were shortage of the right lady is not the problem but the readiness and confidence of men to take the bold step is now been called to question.

When the men delay in settling down (which can be no fault of theirs in some cases) it creates a ripple effect: ladies are kept waiting. After waiting for ‘too long’, ladies become apprehensive and make hurried decisions which often turn out wrong. Off they jump into a union and in no distant time, they are looking for the exit!

I heard a story where a lady was match made with a guy not knowing the guy has mental challenges. I had so many questions like you are having now; how come she did not see the signs but yeah, she didn't and she's in now, frustrated.

Where I am going with this? I am thinking what you should do to maximize your single status and set you for marriage.

Be complete as a single person; don't keep looking out for someone to complete you. Marriage is meant to complement so if you keep having a void, there is a chance that marriage won't help it. So develop yourself.

Invest in yourself; follow your passion and take on a cause that is not just about you. Contribute to life. If you want to change the world, start now!
Enjoy your life, go to movies, travel, sing, explore. Don't lock yourself up because you are unmarried. Enjoy every bit life has to offer.

Understand that marriage is not a feat to be achieved. Don't get married for marriage sake!

In defense of the men, not all guys use finances as the reason for the wait, some are pursuing some goals, for others it is purely their choice and a few others just have cold feet and dread commitment.

My phone rings and jolts me from my thoughts.

"Hello Pete!"
"Hey my guy" I exchanged pleasantries with the caller.
"When are you even getting married man?" he asked.

My pen dropped... oh life and her pressures.

Well said
omarithmetics:
We can all try to be this Jimoke lady but as you rightly said its providence. It was totally random, a chance an act of luck. There are millions of bread sellers some who are even more good looking, nicer and more articulate in the art and trade of bread selling but as fate would have it, Jimoke was the one to reach there first. There are even bread and confectionery bakery owners who haven't had such providence You can try your best its not just going to be good enough without luck.

I get your point

In theory, It can happen anywhere. In reality, that's not the case. Only in enterprenuerial hubs. Of which Lagos is the only one we have, in a cosmopolitan sense.
CareerRe: Reasons Why We Should All Sell Bread! by kajo(op): 12:48pm On Feb 18, 2016
It is not the literal bread I meant in the post. It can happen in different ways and that is the beauty of life. Lagos is good but it can happen anywhere I think wink

I expect Ty Bello to help in that regard and guide
asalimpo:
Location is a key too. What was the possibility of this chance occurence happening occuring outside lagos?
Say in the north , or in the south? practically , nil.

Hope she negotiated the terms of her contract seriously (under the guide of an experience lawyer) ,to avoid being cheated blind.

Walking home yesterday, I saw a lady sorting out the bread she carried on her tray. I stood and watched her accounting for them with care and such faithfulness, using financial principles not from Harvard but from the streets of experience. It brought Jumoke’s story to mind, a celebrity bread seller.

I am sure you heard the story of the bread seller turned model making headline last week. If you didn’t, relax.

It was about a lady (Jumoke Orisaguna) who sells bread in the streets of Lagos, and by providence, she walked into a street photo shoot session by celebrity photographer Ty Bello and got captured alongside the main act. That shot turned out to be a major hit as it went viral with her story.

Today she has a modeling contract, grazed the cover of a magazine and was unveiled as an ambassador of Stanbic IBTC Bank. She moved from being an unknown bread vendor on the street to gaining national prominence as a model within days. I heard a special interview with CNN is in line. Wow!!

Naturally, our first response hearing such a story would be, “God, I connect to that miracle” or “How I wish I was that lucky.. She was just so fortunate”

While I don’t have any issue against that action or thought, I have a problem when most people fail to see the basic lessons for us to learn from her bread to fame story.

What are those things we can pick from this touching story of grace and help us in our life’s journey?

1. Don’t stay idle.
Be about your plans or vision regardless of the level it is now, as you don’t know from whom or where help will come from. Sadly, some of us, even graduates are getting too lazy. We just sit waiting for white collar jobs, not using our imagination to learn a trade, acquire a skill or start up a business. It is more honorable to do this than being idle. The interesting thing is education helps one do a seemingly odd job with class and professionalism. We look down on opportunities too often. If Jumoke had not moved about her business, we won’t have been singing her praise. So, sell your “bread” today!

2. You may have been knocked down, don’t stay down. Jumoke’s story goes back to her days as an apprentice in a tailoring shop who could not get a shop of her own due to lack of funds. She did the brave thing: look for an alternative and move on.

Most of us get too rigid with life and resist change. If a plan is not working, know when to stop and re-direct yourself. Change the path but not the decision to arrive at your destination.

3. In order to locate Jumoke, questions had to be asked of people in that area.

Ensure you are known around your space for any skill or service you offer or render. It makes for easy referrals. Use your social media platform and sell yourself.

4. Notice how she expertly balanced the bread stack on her head and her poise. Always carry yourself well, not proudly, but with a sense of confidence and relaxed belief. People are quick to judge by appearance, so take advantage of their expectation.

It can take a day to change your state. Trust God, be faithful in your business as you may never know when the opportunity will come knocking.

Your bread is that which you can do (service or ability) and I suggest you should get to the street of life and start selling.

Finally, the main reason for the shoot was not even celebrated that much. It goes to show how life can just work in your favour without you knowing as you journey your way.

Cheers!

So, because they didn't give you money you had not yet earned, you decided to torture their innocent baby till she was within an inch of her life? Just shut up and rot in jail. Evil thing.
It is just a lame excuse
FamilyUganda "Evil" Maid Responds From Prison, Begs For Forgiveness by kajo(op): 5:30am On Nov 29, 2014
Arnella Kamanzi, the 18-month-old baby who was tortured by
a maid early this month was yesterday admitted at the pediatric
section in Mulago Hospital for further medical examinations.
"The baby was brought here for examinations and a number
of tests will be done to establish whether she is in good
health," confirmed a source at the national referral
hospital.
Jolly Tumuhiirwe, the maid who is the main actress in the
'horror movie' has been charged with attempted murder and
she is due to appear in court on Dec. 08, 2014.
Speaking from Luzira prison, Jolly Tumuhiirwe has asked the
'world' to forgive her for what she did..she said;
"My dad in Kabale was very sick and yet my mom did not
have any money. I asked my bosses for some money to send
to my dad but they told me that I hadn't made a month yet
and my father was dying, so it kept on haunting me."
"That is the more reason I referred the anger to the baby but
I'm sorry. But that madam (Arnella's mom) is not easy. She
used to say that I steal money from the clothes and Eric's
wallet, I eat the babies food...and yet I can't eat the food,
I'm not a baby, those were all lies, so, I was also not happy
from my heart."
"I feel guilty..ok when I was doing it I thought I was
disciplining the baby because also the mother sometimes
slaps her, I also saw from the mom. The torch I used was
small and it's not hard. I think, I will never do it again"
..of her experience in Prison, she said;
"It's not good at all even my fellow prisoners don't want to
associate with me, they want to beat me up. In fact they
were saying that I should join them in their rooms, nobody
likes me and I'm feeling bad I will never do it again, I ask
the world to forgive me and also tell the bosses who have
maids to treat them well."
