Nice. But I'm not much of a fan of motivational books and the likes; books that strictly prescribes certain rules & principles to conform to in order to achieve a defined goal, however they sometimes prove helpful. When knowledge (lessons, as the case may be) is created in a beautiful novel, it stamps a lasting impression and enables one relate to it better. Going through the pages of a book concerned mainly with rules after rules is tiring on my part, especially the ones about religion.

I share a similar view with you....most just reiterate common sense in an articulate manner. However, there are always exceptions to a rule. This book is one of them. Its an old piece and the author is late. Business Insider enlisted it as one of the best finance books of all time. Speaking of novels, i like striking a balance tho...excessive inoculation of fiction into the brain isn't too good for its wellbeing. Meanwhile The Family by mario puzo will be my next read....

Yes, the book is quite insightful and intellectually stimulating. Makes your thinking to travel afar. There's more to gain. That's the sort of books I indulge.

Erm, telling you the final outcome of the trip could make you have a rethink about going for a read since you are now in the know of events, and would only dull your interest to it. It'd would act more to discourage you from reading cause already you are informed of how everything played out at the end and nothing would seem new to your senses, owning to the fact that my afore provided information will act to shield against any of such experience registering something new.

But I ain't telling you because that's your job to find out, and I want you, likewise others, to get the full content of the package, the same way I did.
So what book are you reading, Care to share?

You're right. Reading a predictable book takes off the steam and makes for a boring read. What's the essence of reading a book if your mind doesn't race or do ten beats a second?

The book is all about 9 different people who were each tricked to go to a strange Island by getting mysterious letters from an unknown host. What the guests are going to do there wasn't explained to them in clear terms, so they honoured the invite without smelling a rat; reason being that the Island is a well-known location which was famous across the country for hosting luxurious parties and all, so they set sail at once aboard a boat on a fixed day with everybone arriving the Island on the same day, including the host who masked himself as a fellow invitee. When they got there they soon realised they are the only ones present in the Island plus a Man and a woman who were housekeepers. Shortly or should I say later, they began to die one by one in a sequencial order - which is in accordance with a nursery rhyme. And in reality, the rhyme is a fortelling of their death which has been predicted. You try to escape the nightmare but you can't just like in the movie 'Final Destination'.
I forgot to mention that the nursery rhyme was framed and hanged in each of their rooms, and ten figurines a.k.a ten little indians were also set atop the dinning table. So whenever someone dies a figurine would break and on and on the game of death, test of wits, survival, trust, betrayal, continued. But nobody was able to tell the cause behind the deaths because the actual person executing the murders is a prodigy. They also discovered beforehand that their host's name is U.N Owen but when the name is somehow arranged and pronounced, it sounds like "UNkNOWN" meaning he doesn't exist so this revelation added to make their nightmare a long-drawn horrorful one tumbling towards a violent clash. This is a book you don't want to miss for anything.

nice one!. could imagine already. Profound and scary at the same time tho. Did they all die?

Finally I'm done with Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. Honestly, I can't describe vividly how I felt on completing such awe-inspiring masterpiece - am I excited, thrilled, or a combination of both experiences? Every part of the book was worth the time spent so to speak. No regrets. Rather I'd gladly read the book again were it not that I've a thousand other books lying in neglect. Now this is the sort of book you will read late into the night and lose awareness of time. The one you devour slowly so as not to finish the delicious meal quickly, you savour every mouthful.

In any case, I rate the book an 8 score on a scale of 1 - 10. There are one or two places in the novel that doesn't just add up, but in this case I won't criticise - since possibilities in our universe aren't endless. I'll live it at that. I think there's nothing else to say. Book's richly flavoured with the vital elements. It improvised suspense fully and expertly and this is my first time reading a book having me guessing latter happenings wrongly that the writer threw me off course yet again with the final narrative of the whole mystery that left me gasping for breath.
I'm humbled at the author's prowess for prividing me an invaluable gift. She's officially be included as one of my favourite writers, but certainly not the best. I hope to read other works by her sooner or later. Let her feed me more.

Some writers are that good. They get you engrossed in their enthralling narratives and witty usage of words. The best of them are those that play the cat and mouse game with the readers. Every page and chapter is unpredictable. Meanwhile what's the book about? #fortheloveofbooks

The show gets more interesting, I swear. Ever more intriguing, beating previous expectations. With every chapter comes a new twist to events. The Old judge, Justice wargrave, is quite a character. He strings everyone tightly in the net, with no exclusion of himself, still, you'd wonder how he's able to put himself off suspicion. I like how his mind works. How he easily creates and terminates doubts. The overtly curious dictative lord type. He shows you what he wants you to see. Of course you are too damn stupid & terrified to look beyond the ordinary surface, so you keep your eyes fixed on the wrong places as against gazing at something and yet everything simultaneously, your attention not directed towards one particular direction. He hasn't been a judge for nothing, after all he has survived the trying years till now. Who will be my knight in shining armour? At first, I thought Lady Brent but then that one's always the strange fellow only that lately there's an edge of insanity to her builld. Vera and Mr Blore are brainwashed - can't come up with unclinched ideas. Dr Armstrong is just there. I have my bet on Mr Lombard for the time being. I hope he won't fail like the rest. But time is running out, he needs to act fast!

And then, I enjoyed every bit of the scene in the dining room held by the remaining survivors striving to uncover the devil in the midst, now that they know what's up, and I liked how it played out - the perfect court.

Here's one hilarious quote echoing in my head ever since I came across it:
"The girl could have done it easily - she's an athletic type. In appearance Miss Brent is fragile looking, but that type of woman has often a lot of wiry strength. And youd must remember that any one who's mentally unhinged has a good deal of unsuspected strength."

Yes we know that. But the reasonn behind the increased rate was to lure foreign Investors. Remember CBN floated the naira, yet foreign Ivestors refused to enter back. This was the last stunt they could pull. Without Dollars flowing into our economy, the so called production will face crisis because of a high exchage rate. It was a gamble he had to take.
The only move to entice FPI (foreign portfolio investors) was to Increase rate, let's hope it works!
Its when capital mobility of a country is high that's when PFI will be responsive to changes in rates. Our capital market is still not developed enough for that to happen yet. That's what they should work on....

I have just completed the book MEMOIR OF A GEISHA
I heard about this book about 6years ago and I tried to get a cop but couldn't and when someone mentioned it here I had to look for the e-book and download and I wasn't disappointed. Need I say you will only find it interesting if you love romance and ever happy after kind of stuff grin. Let me do a quick summary.
The book centres on a Geisha called saruyi, she is from a poor background and was sold into the profession by her father through a man from a neighbouring village who noticed her 'special' eye colour-bluish grey, which was not common in Japan. I forgot to mention she wasn't the only one sold, her sister also but since she wasn't as pretty, she ended up as a prostitute and latter escaped and nothing was said of her afterwards. So back to saruyi! She started her training as a Geisha few months after arriving at Gion but fell out of grace from the owner of the Okiya, that is where geisha(s) live, after her attempt to escape with her sister which failed and she was subdued to the position of a maid. Then one day while running an errand for the Okiya she ran into a man called chairman, he was so kind to her and gave her a hankasief and a coin and the impression he made, made her determine to be come a Geisha if only to be able to meet him again, in order words he became the driving force in her life while a senior Geisha living in the same okiya was bent on ruining her and her chances of ever becoming a Geisha.
She got lucky when suddenly a renown Geisha had an encounter with her and decided to help her, so she started her training again under the tutelage of this Geisha, who is her elder sister (not biological). One day during an outing with her elder sister she was able to meet the chairman again and got to know who he really is and they were introduced but he appear not to have any memory of her, did I mention that over the years she had secretly nurse an affection for the chairman and kept the hankasief which was her consolation whenever she was having a bleak moment. Instead of catching the chairman's attention she ended up fascinating his best friend called Nodu who was once a soldier and a war hero, who has burnt all over is face and body and an amputated hand to show for it. All these happened when she was till an apprentice Geisha but latter she became a Geisha her self and a well known one in Gion. She became a good friend of nobu but she was too deeply in love with the chairman such that when nobu propose to be her danna she find a way to reject him, because if she had accepted, it would have hindered her chances of ever having anything to do with the chairman cause as you know, they are best of friends. He became upset with her after learning that she chose a military officer instead of him, of which she denied by letting him know it wasn't her choice to make but her mother, who is the owner of the okiya, at that time the war was near and it came heavily on them that the activities of geisha and tea houses closed down completely and everybody had to find a hidding place or means of survival and at this critical moment when none could help her, Nobu came to her rescue and secure a place for her at his friend's house, where she stayed till the end of the war. After the war the city return to it usual activities, which means the few geisha and tea houses that survived started entertaining again. Saruyi went back to her okiya after Nobu visited her at his friend's place and seek a favour of her, to help safe the electrical company he and the chairman build over the year, which was about to be seize because of their lack of support to the government during the war period and what is expected of saruyi is to help entertainment the New minister, who happened to have fallen in love with her even though she couldn't even remember meeting him and so she was able to help Nodu and chairman but in the process the minister propose to be her Danna which really annoyed Nobu a great deal has he has already promise to become her danna if only his company is restored to them. They got their company back and so he made known his intention to be her danna which she received with a heavy heart and plotted a way of escaping such ordeal, she came up with an idea of seducing the minister and plan on arranging that Nobu will see them together and she knows he won't be able to stand her afterwards as he once got angry at her when the minister suggested just having her for a night since he couldn't be her danna and when Nobu told her this she replied that she will do anything for nobu since she is forever in his debt but rather than be pleased with this response he became very upset that she could say such and told her that if only he knew she is that kind he will never have anything to do with her ever. So you can see why she wants him to see them together so that she can be free and so she sought the help of a Geisha she grew up with known as pumpkin all through the book even though that isn't her really name or Geisha name, as every geisha is expect to changer her name . She ask pumpkin to bring Nobu to a certain place but rather than bring Nobu, she brought chairman as she is aware of saruyi's secret affection for the chairman and she plotted to revenge against her for making her loose her spot of becoming the daughter of the okiya they grew up in. After this incident saruyi became very sad because she felt there is no way of ever wining the chairman's heart after that incident. On a certain day she was to meet with Nobu, it was the chairman that showed up instead and he told her that he was the one that help her become a Geisha and was actually the one who told her elder sister to help her, he also let her know that he has being in love with her but had to act indifference because of his friend and the values he has for their friendship. He told her after he spoke to pumpkin and learnt that Nobu was the one intended to come along and not him, he knew he cant pretend anymore and told his friend about the incident with the minister, he did this because he believe if truely she and Nobu was destined to be together, he will forgive her regardless of what she has done but he never did. She was so surprise to hear all that and Chairman later become her danna but she had to stop being a geisha in order not to run into Nobu and not destroy his friendship with the chairman. Saruyi later left Japan for America where she spent her later year as a tea shop owner and in the company of the chairman. She hinted her reader of having a son for the chairman even though she wasn't explicit about this. The last two paragraph let us know that the chairman died and she still feels so much in love with him even in absentia.
I hope I have done a good job at summarizing the novel and if anyone is interested please drop your mail I will send it to you.# in team spirit of for the love of book grin#
Hmmmm....interesting piece. I guess the delay in making the readers know the chairman's feelings towards saruyi made it interesting up to a point. But i think the writer should have made the ending more eventful....making us enjoy their happily ever after moments in details. lol

Guys I've commenced reading Chimamanda's novel, Americanah. Just finished reading Chapter One. Will read the next chapter later today.

This is the first Chimamanda's novel I'm reading. She writes just like Chinua Achebe except, of course, for her use of contemporary words. Her use of simple, easy to understand words is very appealing......just like her mentor Achebe (I'm not even sure he's her mentor but her writing suggests so). Also love the Nigerian characters she used in the novel: Ifemelu, Uju, Ginika, Obinze, Dike, etc. I also noticed they are mostly of the Igbo tribe.

Loved her sense of humour too. That part where she depicted how some African Americans of Anglophone origin made a caricature of the phrase: "I'm like, Oh God, I was so mad" to read "Amma, Oh Gad, Az someh" got me laughing. Reminds me of that Etisalat advert: "Amma tell you son'n (nasalised)." Also the part where Ifemelu had to cast a mocking look at the tattered looking Aisha when she (Aisha) was bragging about her two Igbo boyfriends got me laughing.

Her grammatical construct is okay, although I'll have to read a full more chapters to have a full grasp of it. Her use of words is quite possessive and authoritative. For example, the part where she said Princeton "smelled of nothing" got me wondering. She further compounded my confusion by talking of towns that "smelled of neglect" and towns with "musty scent of history." Her sense of smell must be very deep grin. Also loved the way she used some seemingly common words for uncommon sentences. For instance, the part where she said the residents "drove with pointed courtesy. " She sure has a strong command of words, I must say.

Finally, I must warn that you must have a very strong imaginative mind lest you get lost in her novel . The way she transits from one stage to other while still centred on a character is very unique. When Ifemelu was on the train bound for Trenton, the author took us to several places which were far distinct from the train but were all centred on Ifemelu and the reason she's on that particular train bound for Trenton.

All in all, I think it's a nice novel. And I'm now obsessed (albiet not compulsively) to finishing it cheesy.

Wow. awesome review. You've made my mental picture of the plot and style of writing clear already without having read the book yet. I think that's how Achebe wrote too in his later years. Anthills of the Savannah similarly has this complicated switching of plots when he wanted to take us down memory lane. Thanks. #fortheloveofbooks

Far from that, its was more cryptic in dat at somepoint she got most her readers hanging in wanting to explore what unexplored and had alot of unanswered questions leaving the reader in oblivion embarassed

lol...let me guess, the book deviated from your expectations of what you deem as ideal. or perhaps it ended in tragedy. That's the power of good writers. They know how to depict reality.
