CrimeCorruption: Guatemala Congress Strips President Of Immunity by Kennyslimsteve(op): 8:58am On Sep 02, 2015
.Guatemala’s congress has voted to strip embattled President Otto Perez’s immunity, clearing the way for him to be prosecuted over allegations he masterminded a massive corruption scheme.

The resolution was passed unanimously on Monday by the 132 politicians present, who had faced virulent demands from protesters to make the president face trial over the alleged multimillion-dollar fraud scheme at the national customs service.

After months of unprecedented protests that have swept Guatemala, hundreds of demonstrators outside congress erupted into jubilant cheers at the news, as passing drivers honked their horns in celebration.

The vote clears the way for prosecutors to charge Perez, a 64-year-old retired general, with running a scheme that allowed businesses to reduce their customs duty by paying bribes to corrupt officials.

Under Guatemalan law, he will be automatically removed from office if remanded in custody by a judge.

Perez’s lawyers filed a motion on Monday challenging the immunity vote before the Constitutional Court, which is expected to rule by Thursday.

The 132 votes in favour were well clear of the two-thirds majority needed for the motion to pass in the 158-member legislature.
SportsRooney Asked Me Who Martial Was - Schneiderlin by Kennyslimsteve(op): 11:56am On Sep 01, 2015
The 19-year-old is set to complete a move to Old Trafford but his countryman has revealed that the Manchester United captain approached him about his club's latest targetMorgan Schneiderlin has revealed that Wayne Rooney had to ask him who Anthony Martial was when it was confirmed that the 19-year-old was nearing a move to Manchester United.

Martial was granted leave by France national team boss Didier Deschamps on Monday to fly to England and finalise a deal reported to be worth up to €80m with United, and is expected to be confirmed at Old Trafford before the close of the English transfer window on Tuesday.

The deal has surprised many given that Martial has played less than 50 Ligue 1 matches for Monaco and has yet to make a senior appearance for France, and Schneiderlin revealed that United captain Rooney approached him to find out more about his potential new strike partner.

"To be honest, yesterday [Sunday] on the plane, Wayne Rooney came to speak to me and asked me who Martial was, because the English press had started to speak," Schneiderlin told reporters at France's training base at Clairefontaine.

"I told him he's a great player with great potential, who has played some good matches with Monaco last season and the the beginning of this.

"I told him he is technical and powerful. A little like Therry Henry, even if it's the press who are making that comparison."

The deal to take Martial to United will make him the most expensive teenager in the history of football, and Schneiderlin is keen to ensure that the 19-year-old does not feel the weight of his price tag when he arrives at Old Trafford.

"The size of the fee? If he wants my advice, it is to ignore it," the former Southampton man added. "The media will talk a lot and will expect him to score many goals. But he must remember his qualities and play like he knows how. He can't be paralysed by it. I think everything will go well."

SportsMusa Fires CSKA Into UCL Group Stages, Onazi Crashes by Kennyslimsteve(op): 9:45am On Aug 27, 2015
Super Eagles forward, Ahmed Musa, helped CSKA Moscow progress into the group stage of the UEFA Champions League after scoring the decisive goal against Sporting Lisbon in their 3-1 win.

Sporting Lisbon took the lead through Teofilo Gutierrez in the 36th minute, but two goals from Seydou Doumbia in the 49th and 72nd minutes, levelled the tie at 3-3.

With five minutes remaining, Musa scored the all-important third goal to help CSKA advance at the expense of Sporting Lisbon.

It was Musa’s third and most important goal for CSKA this season in the competition.

In Germany, Ogenyi Onazi and Lazio lost 3-0 to Bayer Levekusen to crash out 3-1 on aggregate.

Goals from Hakan Calhanoglu, Admir Mehmedi and Karim Bellarabi, secured Leverkusen the win.

Onazi who was on from the start of the match, later made way for Ravel Morrison in the 82nd minute.

SportsUnderappreciated Ahmed Musa Indispensable To Nigeria by Kennyslimsteve(op): 6:28pm On Aug 26, 2015
There are few more glamorous positions in world football than that of the winger.

Sure, the No.9 gets the goals and the acclaim for victory, the No.10 tearful adoration, but there is an enigma, a mystique around the debonair wing-man—he is perhaps the sole embodiment of individuality in a team-focused sport; he must serve the whole, but can only do so completely when allowed to indulge.

This explains, to an extent, why Ahmed Musa is one of Nigeria’s most underrated footballers. Since his debut in 2011, the CSKA Moscow man has made 49 appearances for the Super Eagles, tallying 10 goals.

In spite of this return, there remains an element of indifference toward Musa from the Nigerian public. He is tolerated rather than loved, greeted with sighs and shrugs, and is often the butt of heckling. Compare, for instance, the difference in popular opinion between him and Peter Odemwingie. The latter has the sultry good looks and mystery that is relatable in wingers; however, his 65 caps for Nigeria have yielded 11 goals—some of these playing as a striker

Why does Odemwingie receive so much more affection than Musa?
Musa lacks the archetypal comeliness of the Stoke forward, his frame is slight and his gait is awkward. The rather inelegant sobriquet ‘Aboki’ – literally ‘friend’ - a pejorative term for people of the Hausa extraction, has stuck; one undeterred by the fact the former Kano Pillars man hails from Edo state in the South on his mother's side.

It also encapsulates the playful peer-group ribbing that is common among the youth, especially in the wake of minor indiscretions, perceived or actual. In the eyes of the majority, Musa’s abilities remain flawed by poor decision-making, a trait most associated with a lack of maturity and/or savvy.

Quite aside the snobbish inaccuracy of this view, complete with its condemnable tribalistic undertones, there is some basis for the view about the player’s style. Frustrations have always lingered over the erratic nature of his decision-making in the final third, as well as a perceived ‘inconsistency’.

This is worsened by his occasional deployment on the right flank, which totally negates his strengths: he never has been an efficient crosser, and tends to over-estimate both the amount of space between himself and the touchline, as well as his own pace. As a result, he frequently runs the ball out of play, precipitating groans and eye-rolling.

However, the presence of a blemish in one’s playing style is true for just about every footballer—it is a sport with a vast range of skill-sets, all of which cannot be mastered absolutely. The only two players who come close to filling out the polygon – Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi – are, at best, gods and, at worst, freakish elements of Nature-on-acid: possessed with a crazed, over-active imagination. For the rest of mortal humanity, it will suffice for the strengths to outnumber and outweigh the weaknesses.

Musa will never fly that high. However, he is quick, blindingly so, and has great technique when striking the ball. He is also surprisingly cool in front of goal: witness his finishes against Argentina at the World Cup in Brazil, giving Manchester United’s Sergio Romero the eyes before finishing near post; and in October against Sudan in Abuja.

Musa | Flawed, but his qualities are hard to deny
Then again, these traits were already apparent four years ago when he debuted for Nigeria, and set the world alight at the U20 World Cup in Colombia. Since then, toughened up by spells at centre-forward for CSKA, Musa has bulked up quite noticeably - all the better to battle muscle-bound centre-backs with – and has the best movement off the ball in the national side.

His first touch is also much improved. Playing on the left, this makes him a useful asset for switches of play, where he can isolate a full-back and either come inside to link up or shoot, or go down the outside with his searing pace.

If there is an element of anarchy to his play which occasionally infuriates, it is a double-edged sword. Attacking is, after all, about breaking the opposition’s defensive links—if positional play and intricate passing fail to do the trick, a little chaos factor serves to pick the lock.

This unique blend of qualities, albeit dappled with slight imperfections, make Ahmed Musa indispensable to the national team. When Sunday Oliseh reveals his starting 11 to face Tanzania on the 5th of September, you can be sure Musa’s name will be there, just as you can be sure it will be received with a sigh and a shrug. Five goals already this season in nine games for CSKA Moscow is proof-positive we cannot begrudge him.

He may not be everyone’s cup of tea but, Vincent Enyeama aside, Musa is the first name on the Super Eagles team list.

SportsNFF: No Targets For Oliseh by Kennyslimsteve(op): 9:37am On Jul 29, 2015
The Nigeria Football Federation have said that they will not put pressure on Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh to win the Championship of Africa Nations (CHAN) or reach any specific targets.

According to the 2nd Vice President of NFF, Shehu Dikko, CHAN is never top priority and winning it can never be used to measure Oliseh as the Super Eagles coach.

He said that the focus of the football ruling body is to see how talented young players in the Nigeria Premier League can be discovered and graduate into the main stream Super Eagles.

He said that Oliseh’s mandate is to restructure Nigerian football.

Unlike the norm in the past where the national team coaches were given targets, the Nigeria Football Federation refused to give Oliseh any target but said that his performance will be judged by his overall out put over a period.

“Winning or losing CHAN will not be used to asses the Super Eagles coaches,” Dikko told completesportsnigeria.com. “Our focus is more on discovering young and talented players from the Nigeria Premier League that can break into the main Super Eagles. By the time we see most of our league players forming the bulk of the Super Eagles, then we can say we have succeeded and the coach would have succeeded too.

SportsNFF Seeks Partnership With Germany by Kennyslimsteve(op): 6:26am On Jul 29, 2015
The Nigeria Football Federation has moved to formalise closer relationship with Germany in all football matters.

The Ambassador of Germany to Nigeria, Mr. Dietmar Kreusel, met with top NFF officials on Tuesday in Abuja as they highlighted the achievements Germany has recorded in world football.

“Germany are not only the reigning champions of the world in football, the country is also a strong economic power. We have come here to express our intention to make Germany our model for development of the game of football,” NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, said.

“We desire to partner with the DFB (Germany Football Federation) and the German league. The NFF is presently doing a lot in the area of development of the game in Nigeria. We are requesting support for our developmental programme for women’s football, as well as capacity building for our referees and coaches.

“In view of our various programmes, we are requesting that Your Excellency initiate an easier procedure for our officials – NFF Executive Committee members, management and staff – to secure entry visas into Germany for football programmes.”

NFF 2nd Vice President/Chairman, League Management Company, Mr. Shehu Dikko, added: “Our checks have shown that the Bundesliga is the top model league in the world. The Nigeria Professional Football League is ready to adopt this model.

“We have had discussions with the CEO of the Bundesliga, and our plan involves sending some of our club managers to Germany to go and see how it is done in that country. “

Ambassador Kreusel, who confirmed that he is a big supporter of German Bundesliga club, Mainz 05 (the club of Super Eagles’ defender Leon Balogun), assured that the requests by the NFF would be looked into.

“Nigeria and Germany have always maintained very close relations. I recall that one of President Muhammadu Buhari’s first visits outside Nigeria after inauguration was to Germany. That shows how close our ties are,” he said.

SportsIbe Not Better Than Iheanacho – Nwosu by Kennyslimsteve(op): 7:34am On Apr 21, 2015
Ex-international, Henry Nwosu, has advised the Nigeria Football Federation not to beg the likes of Jordon Ibe of Liverpool to play for Nigeria, saying there are equally good players who are willing to play for the Super Eagles.

Nwosu told our correspondent that Ibe, who was born in England to a Nigerian father, is not a better player than Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho, a home-grown talent.

The NFF has indicated interest in wooing the likes of Ibe, Alex Iwobi of Arsenal and other players of Nigerian descent to play for the country.

Nwosu, an ex-Golden Eaglets coach, said it was proper to give the players the chance to represent Nigeria, but noted that they were not better than some of the home-grown talents in the U-20 and U-23 national teams.

He said, “If Jordon Ibe and the others don’t feel like playing for Nigeria, good luck to them. They won’t be the first to deny Nigeria. But at the end of the day, they will regret it. If we give it a push, try to get them to play for the Super Eagles, and they are still proving stubborn, we should let them go.

“We have abundant good players in this country. To play for your country is most important. Who said Ibe is better than Kelechi Iheanacho? I don’t think so. You can’t say, until both of them are put on opposing sides and their performances are measured.”

Nineteen-year-old Ibe, who has made an impact on Liverpool’s senior team, has played for England at U-18, U-19 and U-20 levels, but can still represent Nigeria at senior level.
