Former Nigeriastriker Jonathan Akpoborie has blamed the Super Eagles' lack of zeal to win as the reason for their 0-0 draw against Bafana Bafana on Wednesday. The African champions have now won just one of their last 11 matches after their shocking 3-2 home loss to Congo on Saturday in an uninspiring performance. According to him, the result of the game was a bad one and doubts the Eagles’ chances of booking a place in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. "The outcome was not good enough because we did not play the best of our football and besides the Eagles were not purposeful and aggressive enough,” Akpoborie told Goal. "We could have secured a win in this game but it’s just painful that our players lacked the desire to win, that was why in the whole of the game, we had just a clear cut chance." The former VFB Stuttgart star also pointed out the reasons why the Nigeria national team have looked so ordinary in recent times. "Since Keshi took over, we are used to just one system where we rely on the speed of our attackers and rely on counter. "Just like it happened against Congo we had problems, there was no transition between the midfield and the attack. Even from the attack to the defence, it was not really good enough. "This has been the problem with the team for a very long time but we have just been lucky. Right now, it is really telling on the team. "As it stands, it will really be difficult to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations because we have bungled away our chances. Congo now top the group with six points with South Africa having four points.” Akpoborie concluded by saying that the Nigeria Football Federation should take a drastic decision on whether Keshi should continue as the national team coach or get another better hand to lead the team. "The decision on whether Keshi will stay or not depends on the NFF in disarray right now. From the Confederation Cup to the World Cup and now , we should really not think twice about this. Is the coach really the right man to handle our national team right now? "But then again, he has started the qualifying series and if the NFF are ready to give a new contract, this is the right time to make a decision,” he concluded. Nigeria are placed third in Group A, behind Congo and South Africa who have six and four points, and ahead of Sudan who are yet to pick up any points. |

Stoke City’s latest signing, Victor Moses, says he’s hoping to make the fans proud during his season-long loan from Chelsea . The Nigeria international, who agreed the move from Stamford Bridge on Saturday, also revealed he turned down a number of opportunities to play for Mark Hughes’ Potters for the 2014/15 campaign. The pacey forward, equally adept up front and out on the wing, could now be in line to feature in Stoke’s game away at Hull City on Sunday. “I’m very delighted to be here,” he toldStoke City Player. “I spoke to the manager before I came and it looks as though the Club is moving in the right direction. “I had a few options to go to other clubs but when I heard about Stoke I knew that they had a good manager and I thought it would be good to come here and work under him. “He’s a great manager, and was a great footballer too, and for me to play under him will be a great achievement. “I just want to give 110% to the club and hopefully we will achieve what the club are looking to do this season.” Moses arrives at the Britannia Stadium following a summer playing alongside Peter Odemwingie for Nigeria at the World Cup. Participating for their country in Brazil has meant an extended break for both players, but Moses hopes he can hit the ground running to feature as much as possible after a loan-spell with Liverpool last year proved to be a disappointing time. “I didn’t play as many games as I would have liked to at Liverpool last season but that’s football and I’ve got to put that aside,” he added. “The most important thing now is that I’m at Stoke and I’m here to help the club achieve what we’re looking for this season. “I want to enjoy my football when I’m out there, to score goals and create chances. “As long as I’m enjoying my football then that is the most important thing. “I’m here to do a job for the club and I’m very pleased to be here. |
NigeriaN-born Wisla Krakow forward Emmanuel Sarki has been cleared by FIFA to feature for Haiti national team. The right winger will therefore debut for Haiti in a game against Chile on September 9, 2014, in Fort Lauderdale in the United States of America. At a time, Sarki was so highly rated as to be on the payroll of Chelsea alongside Mikel Obi. But he eventually did not make the grade in England, forcing him to try his luck in Belgium and Israel before he finally settled down in Poland with Wisla Krakow. Sarki was born on December 26, 1987, in Kaduna, Nigeria. He played for Nigeria at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Finland in 2003, but never played for the senior national team, which made it possible to obtain clearance to represent Haiti, where his great-grandparents came from. But it was a different tale for Romania after FIFA rejected an application from the country to cap former Nigerian U-20 striker Kehinde Fatai. The Astra Giurgiu star striker told AfricanFootball.com, “FIFA have told Romania FA that I am not eligible to play for the Romania national team as they had hoped. They said if I had got Romanian citizenship before I played for Nigeria junior teams, that would have been possible.” Fatai has been a big hit since he moved to Romania from JUTH FC of Jos in the 2006/2007 season, when he joined Farul Constanta. |
The Super Falconets of Nigeria defeated New Zealand in the quater final of the ongoing FIFA U-20 Women World Cup in Canada. Nigeria started quickly, just as Peter Dedevbo’s side did against Korea Republic in the group stage, and proved to be too strong for New Zealand as Asisat Oshoala’s brace gave the Super Falconets a 4-1 win and passage into the semi-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014. Oshoala scored just 31 seconds into the game, finishing an attack that began when Nigeria kicked off. Ugo Njoku sent in an inch-perfect cross from the right to find the No4 in between two New Zealand defenders, who calmly headed home from six yards. Oshoala’s opening goal is the second-fastest goal at a U-20 Women’s World Cup, only bested by team-mate Courtney Dike’s strike 18 seconds into Nigeria’s second group stage game. With the African side clearly in charge, Oshoala doubled Nigeria’s lead 11 minutes later. Chinwendu Ihezuo sent a delightful ball into space, beating four Kiwi defenders with the pass, for Oshoala to chase down. The speedy forward took one touch towards goal and finished through the Lily Alfeld’s legs. An enthusiastic dancing celebration with Oshoala and her team-mates ensued near the corner flag. New Zealand, who were playing in their first quarter-final at a U-20 Women’s World Cup, looked out of their comfort zone throughout the first half and were never able to trouble the Nigerian backline. After the second goal, Dedevbo’s team quieted down as well as both teams looked to navigate the wet conditions in Moncton. After that the action quieted down significantly with Nigeria losing their spark and both teams struggling to control possession on a rainy pitch in Moncton. It was much of the same after the break, though Emma Rolston nearly gave New Zealand a way back into the game in the 54th minute. The No14 was strong in the air and flicked on a hopeful long ball, which nearly caught goalkeeper Sandra Chiichii by surprise at the far post, but she was able to get a hand on it. Alfeld did well to keep the scoreline at 2-0 in the 68th minute when she tipped Uchenna Kanu’s powerful shot off the crossbar that otherwise would have screamed into the roof of the net. There was not much the Kiwi keeper could do, though, six minutes from time when Uchechi Sunday blasted home from six yards off a corner kick to extend Nigeria’s lead to 3-0. Rolston ensured New Zealand would not crash out of the quarter-final empty-handed and, in the 89th minute, she beat her defender to the near post and redirected Jasmine Pereira’s cross past Chiichii to make it 3-1. In the waning seconds, however, Nigeria restored their three-goal lead when Sunday scored her second goal in six minutes. The pacey No20 dribbled down the left, beat her defender and calmly finished past Anfeld. Having won three games in a row, Nigeria will enter the semi-finals full of confidence where they will face the Korea DPR, while New Zealand can head home knowing they have gone further at this U-20 Women’s World Cup than any Kiwi side before them. |
There are very strong indications that the Nigeria Football Federation will this week announce an interim coach for the game against Congo on September 6 in Calabar. The Confederation of African Football replaced Rwanda with Congo on Sunday following their disqualification for using an ineligible player. The PUNCHlearnt on Sunday that the machinery has been put in place to get another Nigerian to stand in until a decision is taken on Stephen Keshi’s second term as the Super Eagles coach. A member of the federation who spoke with our correspondent said that it had become very evident that the NFF and Keshi cannot conclude their discussion in time for the 2015 Africa Nations Cup qualifier. The NFF had planned to use Keshi while the negotiation continued. He said, “You know so many things have happened in the last few days especially with the FIFA decision on Nigeria. But above all, Keshi and the federation appear to be still far apart to make any conclusion in few days’ time. The federation offered to maintain his current salary but he has instead demanded a whopping N15m which is N10m difference. The federation has offered him a four-year contract to make long term planning easier for both sides but he is asking for one year with option of renewable. September 6 is a breath away and the game is very important for us and so we have to use plan B and then continue the discussion with him later.” The interim coach is expected to be announced before the week runs out as the federation calls up the players for the game. The interim manager will be chosen under the leadership of Alhaji Aminu Maigari who is billed resume in office today (Monday) as the NFF president. The world football governing body FIFA overruled his purported impeachment of July 25. Maigari’s resumption was announced by the sports minister Dr. Tammy Danagogo in a joint press conference with Maigari on Friday in Abuja. And for the game, CAF organising committee disqualified Rwanda following a protest made by the Congolese Football Federation regarding the eligibility of Rwandan player, Birori Dady. Dady had featured in the first leg of the second round qualifier between the two countries last month in Pointe-Noir. Congo claimed that Dady, who plays for AS Vita Club in Kinshasa, has a different name and age in his passport. CAF established that the player also uses a different age in his passport, and that the two identities referred to a single person. Defending champions Nigeria are in same group alongside Sudan, South Africa and with this resolution, Congo |

Money is a universal language, and different people do different things to obtain it. No matter who people are, no one has ever said they hate money. Some people even kill and destroy while others wait patiently till their ‘God-approved’ time to get it. Lets see ur views so if you are called 10 minutes to your wedding to sign a $10m (N1.6bn) contract, what would you do? |
BY JUDE OPARA, Abuja Apparently, after all efforts to regain his position as the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) failed, the impeached former president, Alhaji Aminu Maigari yesterday tendered his letter of resignation to the NFF secretariat. Sports Vanguardhad reported that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Pius Anyim Pius waded into the matter by inviting both the Minister and Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Tamuno Danagogo and the NFF board members to find a way of getting Maigari back to his position but the later did not accept that proposal. Maigari, sacked The Chief Mike Umeh led executive committee had insisted that for Maigari to get any soft landing, he must first submit his resignation letter which will enable the NFF to begin moves to change his impeachment into a resignation to enable him retain his [position in both CAF and FIFA committees. It was further revealed that Senator Anyim had pleaded with the board to vacate the impeachment so as to enable Maigari get clearance to receive a national award in October of which he is said to have been selected due to his achievements in the NFF. A board member who confirmed the development to Sports Vanguard yesterday in Abuja said the issue of Maigari and his resignation letter would be part of the agenda of the scheduled emergency congress of August 26. According to our source, the Congress is also expected to grant the former president the clearance he wants by commuting his impeachment into resignation. “I can confirm to you right now that we have received a letter of resignation from Alhaji Aminu Maigari. This was exactly the condition we gave the SGF at our last meeting with him. We are not against his future political ambitions. Now that he has officially thrown in the towel, we will try to give him a safe landing at the August 26 Congress of the NFF by vacating his impeachment” the executive committee members stated. |
LIBERIA’s deputy finance minister, Sebastian Omar, who cleared Patrick Sawyer to travel, yesterday, defended himself against charges of incompetence for clearing Sawyer to travel to Nigeria for a conference. In the conversation on Facebook tracked by online publication,Premium Times, Omar stood his ground, and revealed that Sawyer was his friend. Asked whether Omar saw Sawyer’s blood test results or whether he simply told him it was negative, the minister said, “As his superior, if a man tells you his sister died from Ebola and he could have been exposed do you not think it is your duty to ask the hard questions or maybe you could have reported this to the health officials? Stop making silly excuses as to not being his doctors. This does not excuse you from asking the questions as a government official that would safeguard the lives of our citizens and your international partners. It is your duty, again as a Government official not wanting to go above and beyond his duty to safe guard our population. Sebastian Muah Omar Tariq, a friend is dead, I do not owe you any explanation. POS (Patrick Sawyer) was a public health practitioner if you must know. The Ugandan doctor was a medical doctor if you again must know. They are no longer. So the freaking issue is not why he lied or didn’t lie to travel. But how we address the freaking disease. If you don’t have jack to say in that direction then frankly shut up on the subject. Sebastian Muah doesn’t have time today frankly for your rants.” Omar Tariq, oh hell yes you do owe Liberians and the international community an explanation Sebastian Muah, this is the complete arrogance of you people in government. How do you tell us such nonsense. You have through your negligence of not asking the proper questions exposed others to such a horrible Virus and you on here talking bull. A friend is dead I am sorry but you have some answering to do since you want to brag that you approved his travels. Sebastian Muah the old people say empty drum can’t make noise. So you will be talking by yourself as I see you don’t know what you are talking about and as a matter of finding solution you do not have any but trying to find blame. Someone must have frustrated the hell out of you in Liberia O…. Take me to the international court since I am guilty of approving a travel. |
