ACCRA, 29th February 2016: The Accra Institute of Technology (AIT), a leading technology-focused private university awarded two Nigerians the top prize during the University’s 9th Graduation Congregation held in Accra over the weekend. In a statement released by the University, Mr. Peter Hunnoho Moses(left), who graduated with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Technology was judged the overall best student of the graduation class with a cumulative GPA of 3.99. The overall best student in the Female category went to Ms. Odinaka Abel Favour(right) who graduated with a First Class Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a cumulative GPA of 3.90. In his speech to the congregation, which saw the graduation of Bachelor’s degree holders and PhDs, Professor Clement Dzidonu, the President of the University observed that this is a major achievement given that, AIT has the toughest and the highest grading system within the university system in Ghana. ‘To get an A grade in a subject at AIT you must score above 90 and to get a First Class with a cumulative GPA close to the maximum 4.2, means that a student must consistently get A grades across board’, Professor Dzidonu noted. The Deputy Minister for Education, responsible for Tertiary Education, Hon. Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, who was the Special Guest of Honour, congratulated the university for mounting mainly science, technology and engineering programs which in his view is in line with Government’s determination to implement and enforce the 60:40 policy guidelines aimed at giving priority to science, mathematics and engineering programs in our tertiary institutions. The Deputy Minister also congratulated those receiving the overall best graduating student awards and noted that, Ghana is currently attracting over seven thousand foreign students from close to sixty countries to its private and public universities annually. He announced that the Government is mindful of the internationalization of higher education and the Ministry of Education is empowering its statutory higher education regulatory bodies to ensure that the high academic standards of a number of the Ghanaian universities including AIT are internationally benchmarked to continue to attract more foreign students. https://www.wired.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Alien-3.jpg https://www.wired.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Alien-4.jpg Before they even started shooting their movie Extraterrestrial, the Vicious Brothers (aka Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz) knew they wanted their Cabin in the Woods-meets-alien-invasion film to be authentic. Bug-eyed invaders, flying saucers—the whole deal. Unfortunately, those things are expensive, and what they didn’t have was a huge budget. “It was not the amount that we required, for sure,” Minihan says of Extraterrestrial, which hits theaters next week. “Our complete production budget was $3 million dollars.” Yet, somehow, they crammed the movie with so much wizardry that producers were convinced they’d gotten a $3 million budget for visual effects alone. How’d they do it? For one, they went digital. Originally, they wanted to shoot the alien using practical effects instead of CGI. But they also wanted a 9-foot-tall skinny creature (“it looks funny when there’s a bunch of four-foot-tall critters cowering around people,” Minihan says), so a human in a suit wouldn’t do the trick. Also, the 9-foot-tall puppet was nearly impossible to light properly and always looked like rubber on camera. “So we started to opening our minds to the idea of doing it in post-production,” Minihan says. “But it was only when our visual effects company basically sat us down and begged us to do the alien in CG and then proved to us that they could do it that we came around to it.” Originally, the alien torture was much more elaborate, involving 10 different methods using 10 different apparatuses, the filmmakers pared it down after Waterproof informed them that the scene would require 200 shots. “We had to let it go,” says Minihan, “and cut it down to three cool gags.” It still worked out. (The hashtag for the film is still #GetProbed, after all.) “It’s still basically the essence of what we wanted to do,” Ortiz says. “We’re very happy with it.” https://www.wired.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Torture-Room-10.jpg https://www.wired.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Anal-Probe-1.jpg Extraterrestrial hits theaters Nov. 21 and is currently available on VOD. https://yfmghana.com/images/_current_affairs/FADOLA.jpg A Ghanaian fraudster who posed as an American major general to swindle thousands of pounds from lonely British women he met through online dating sites has been jailed. Maurice Asola Fadola charmed vulnerable lonely women during his 'Rom Con' scam, sending flowers on their birthdays and bombarding them with flattering messages and poetry. But he would soon claim to be in some sort of financial difficulty and ask the often widowed pensioners to send cash his way - which he used to pay for a lavish gold-plated mansion in his home country. The conman, believed to be in his 40s, has now been unmasked as one of the world's most prolific online dating fraudsters as his callous crimes left some victims penniless and even HOMELESS. https://yfmghana.com/images/_current_affairs/Maurice-Asola-Fadolas-mansion.jpg At least 19 British victims were spun an elaborate web of lies as Fadola used pictures of US Army servicemen plundered from the web to claim he was serving in Iraq and needed cash for emergency medical treatment, customs charges or even to buy his way out of the army. In all, he is believed to have conned 19 British victims out of around £800,000. After almost three years of heartache and accusations, Fadola has now been sentenced in his native country to five years in prison and ordered to repay his victims in full. One victim, 71-year-old grandmother Katherine Clark from Southsea, Hampshire, travelled to Ghana to give evidence against Fadola. She had lost her husband 30 years previously and was charmed by the conman, who this time claimed to be a British builder named Bruce living in London. Speaking to Sky News in 2011, she said: "He made feel great, he made me feel wanted and that he was genuine. It was a nice feeling." Fadola soon told Ms Clark he was moving to Ghana and encouraged her to send money to him to invest in a mining company. She even travelled to the West African country at one point to meet 'Bruce' and encountered Fadola - who was pretending to be Bruce's driver. He took her to Fadola's luxury marble-clad mansion, showed her a case of gold to prove the investment was genuine and then said Bruce was in prison and needed her money for bail. On another occasion, 57-year-old widow Dena White, of East Yorkshire, lost her home after she re-mortgaged her property and used £50,000 of her savings to help 'Steve Moon' in a legal dispute over the impounding of his war medals. https://yfmghana.com/images/_current_affairs/Katherine-Clark.jpg Fadola - posing as Moon - said he couldn't access his own cash because he was serving in Iraq. The pair chatted through a dating website for hours each day. Speaking to the Daily Mail after he was unmasked, she said: "Of course I was wary but everything he told me seemed to check out. "He’d send me poetry. It sounds silly now but we were in love." Fadola was snared when he tried to obtain a British visa which disclosed his true identity to the National Crime Agency, who were investigating a case where a disabled woman had been persuaded to sell her house and send funds to Ghana. He is believed to have targeted women across Britain, France, Sweden, Italy and the US and was found guilty of more than 20 offences stemming from his 2012 trial. sOURce- http://ymf |
Instabridge, an Android app that wants to replace your phone’s default Wi-Fi manager and give you access to a crowdsourced database of Wi-Fi hotspots, has bagged a $1 million seed round. Funding is being led by European VC Creandum, with participation from GP Bullhound, and a number of angel investors, including Niall Murphy (former CTO of TheCloud), Scott Bannister and Felix Hagnö (co-founder and former CTO of TradeDoubler). Originally founded in late 2012 as a way to enable you to share your home Wi-Fi with friends on Facebook, the Stockholm-based startup has since pivoted somewhat to become a broader Wi-Fi sharing community. The Instabridge Android app lets you share the details of any Wi-Fi hotspot with other Instabridge users, and gives you access to Wi-Fi hotspots shared by everyone else in the community. In addition, the app comes pre-loaded with a database of venues that have free Wi-Fi, such as McDonald’s or Starbucks. These are usually shown on a map, but can also be navigated to using your phone’s compass. “In it’s most basic form, Instabridge is a complete replacement to the phone’s Wi-Fi manager,” Instabridge co-founder and CEO Niklas Agevik tells TechCrunch. “The Wi-Fi part of your phone has looked the same for the past 15 years. And rethinking that is exciting. With Instabridge you can use it to connect to Wi-Fi like you normally do but with our superpowers.” As an example of those “superpowers,” Agevik cites Instabridge’s ability to back up your Wi-Fi networks in the cloud and sync them with any of your other devices running the app, such as a tablet. Instabridge also gives you a heads up if a Wi-Fi network is open network or requires you to log in/pay. “And on top of that it helps you find the closest Wi-Fi spot or get connected to free Wi-Fi where you are right now,” he says. In terms of metrics, Instabridge says users are adding over 1,000 networks per day, and that each day 20,000 connections are made to Instabridge-located hotspots. Noteworthy, the app is finding most take up in emerging markets, such as Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and India, along with Spain, Netherlands, Canada and the U.S. “There’s a lot of free Wi-Fi from different providers but I think our USP is that we merge them all into one app, making them easy to find,” adds Agevik. “There are some other similar apps that automatically connect you to open Wi-Fi networks or help you find Wi-Fi. But what sets Instabridge apart is the community of users sharing Wi-Fi, making sure you get more Wi-Fi by using Instabridge and also ensuring that WiFi listed in Instabridge actually works — something we work really hard on.” Meanwhile, Instabridge, which is currently pre-revenue, says today’s newly-announced funding will be used to accelerate development of the startup’s Android app, with an iPhone version planned for release shortly. https://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/77985000/jpg/_77985253_024175712-1.jpg A hospital in the German city of Frankfurt-on-Main has taken in an Ebola patient after he was flown in during the night under tight security. After arriving on a medical flight from West Africa, the man was brought to Frankfurt University Hospital where he was placed in an isolation ward. He is a Ugandan doctor who worked with Ebola patients in Sierra Leone. It is Germany's second case, with a man undergoing treatment in Hamburg after arriving from West Africa in August. In West Africa more than 3,338 people have died in the world's worst outbreak of the virus. There have been 7,178 confirmed cases, with Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea suffering the most. 'Adrenaline rises' The Frankfurt hospital said the patient's arrival had gone well. "I am confident that the patient can get good treatment," Professor Rene Gottschalk told reporters. Staff, he said, had been trained to handle Ebola patients, adding "but still, the adrenaline levels naturally go a little higher when a real patient is brought in." Giving details of the sufferer, Hesse Minister of Social Affairs Stefan Gruettner said he had been working for an Italian aid organisation in Sierra Leone and had helped Ebola sufferers there before becoming infected himself. |

Brazilian Man Born with Upside-Down Head Defies All Odds, Becomes Motivational Speaker https://videos.starmedia.com/imagenes/2014/09/claudio-vieira-oliveira-300x300.jpg https://cdn.images.express.co.uk/img/dynamic/80/590x/-505744.jpg You know those stories that sort of hit you in the heart and you can’t help but actually stop to think about what it would be like to walk a day in that person’s shoes? Well, folks this is one of those stories. Meet Claudio Vieira de Oliveira, a 37-year-old man living in Monte Santo, Brazil. He suffers from an extremely rare condition doctors have recently coined congenital arthrogryposis. Congenital arthrogryposis is a completely debilitating disorder — Claudio was born with his head upside down (imagine a neck completely folded back on itself), as well as deformed legs and hardly any use of his arms and hands. When his mother, Maria Jose, delivered him in the hospital, doctors told her that he had zero chances of surviving, and that she should probably stop feeding him because he was just going to die. Miraculously, Claudio didn’t die; he persevered. “But there’s only happiness now. Claudio is just like any other person – that’s how he was raised in this house. We never tried to fix him and always wanted him to do the normal things everyone else does. That’s why he is so confident. He is not ashamed of walking around in the street – he sings and he dances,” his mother explained. Despite facing impossible odds, he has gone on to complete a graduate program at State University of Feira de Santana to work as an accountant and inspires others as a public speaker. To type, he holds a pen in his mouth, and uses his lips to function a telephone or computer mouse. “Since I was a child I’ve always liked to keep myself busy and work – I don’t like to depend totally on other people. I do a bit of accounting, research for clients and consulting,” he says. “I have learned to turn on the TV, pick up my cell phone, turn on the radio, use the internet, my computer – I do it all by myself.” Throughout his life, he has been able to familiarize himself with his body in order to survive in the world. And guess what? He sees himself just like you and I… like a normal person! “I don’t see things upside-down. This is one of the things I always talk about in my interventions as a public speaker. Nowadays it’s much easier to deal with the public, I’m not afraid of it anymore and I can say that I am a professional, international public speaker and that I receive invitations from all over the world.” His story was featured on TLC’s Body Bizarre, which begins September 4, at 9pm. https://cdn.godupdates.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/jd-gv-man-with-backwards-head-red-button-FB.jpg Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmE-G_TMoEs |
