Guinea's health minister said Saturday that it had closed its borders with the two countries to prevent infected people from entering. State television in Guinea later said, however, that it had only instituted special health measures at border posts, according to the BBC. Even so, journalists at the border say that large trucks have blocked people, including Guineans, from crossing and that many were being forced to pay officials to enter the country. The BBC also quoted an unnamed official from the aid group Doctors Without Borders as saying that Liberia has underrepresented the figures on infections and that its health system was "falling apart." Lindis Hurum, an emergency coordinator for the private aid organization in Liberia, tells NPR's Jason Beaubien that in the Liberian capital, Monrovia, the situation is "catastrophic" with at least 40 health workers infected in recent weeks. "Most of the city's hospitals are closed, and there are reports of dead bodies lying in streets and houses," Hurum says. He said Doctors Without Borders is reinforcing its current team of nine international staff and 10 Liberian staff in the country, but that the organization is reaching the limits of its capacity, and there is a dire need for the WHO, Ministry of Health and other organizations to rapidly and massively scale up the response in Liberia. NPR's Ofeibea Quist-Arcton, reporting from Freetown, Sierra Leone, says: "Soldiers are being deployed in Liberia and Sierra Leone to seal off Ebola hot spots and restrict people's movements. National emergencies have been declared in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria — the latest to be hit by Ebola. Faraway Zambia, in southern Africa, has slapped a ban on travelers entering from Ebola-affected countries, while restricting Zambians from traveling to those nations." General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong has charged Christians not to spirtualise the Ebola virus and has explained that it is not only when you go to church that God reaches out to you. “And so we should not create impression that God can reach out to us only when people go to church. When we are in a health facility, the power of God is equally there. Instead of spiritualizing the virus; we will want people to see it as medical challenge which must attract medical attention,” he stressed. According to him, God equally used health practitioners to glorify Himself. The General Secretary was debunking assertions on Joy News Monday evening that it was only pastors and prayer camps, which could cure the deadly Ebola virus or any other sickness. There have also been claims that the Ebola virus is a punishment from God Almighty and He is the only one who could cure it. Although Rev. Opuni-Frimpong admitted that “yes, we believe that, like the Bible says; with God all things are possible”, those God is using for miracles to glorify Himself are not only those who are wearing clerical [attires] or pastors but people who are into medicine are also in ministry and God is using them. “I must say there is nothing wrong with people activating their faith in times of challenges; in times of difficulty but we are dealing with a disease, a virus that is a health challenge and therefore people must seek medical attention and that is our position.” He said history of the disease could be traced from 1976 in Congo and manifested in Hong Kong, Philippines, Sudan and other countries. “So let’s accept that it is a not a punishment from God; it’s not demonic; it’s a virus and those who see the symptoms must report to health centres.” Prayer warriors and pastors, he advised should not keep patients at their prayer camps to worsen the plights of the people. “We should not replace what we do with what medical professionals are supposed to do,” adding, “we must pray but we must get things done right. People must go to the hospital for attention.

That’s the prediction (and hope) among security experts who are racing to replace the is-it-really-you test, which dates to the early 1960s. Since then, passwords have become an omnipresent nuisance for both users and security officers—perpetually forgotten and inevitably stolen, as evidenced this week by the news that a Russian gang has amassed a trove of more than one billion login credentials. (Read: More than a billion online accounts breached by Russian gang.) Two out of every three data breaches involve the exploitation of weak or stolen passwords, according to Verizon’s 2014 Data Breach Investigations Report. And making them stronger isn’t much help. The more requirements websites add for passwords—to reach a minimum number of characters using uppercases, lowercases, and special characters, to avoid strings similar to previous passwords, to do a handstand while typing it in—the more likely people are to reuse passwords across accounts or create weak ones, researchers say. A 2012 study found that almost one-third of people have more than 10 unique passwords, and 38% of people would rather scrub toilets than try to come up with new ones. The tech industry is brimming with companies touting products to block impostors in a post-password age—all aiming to cash in on cybercrime, a problem with an estimated global cost of up to $445 billion, according to Internet security firm McAfee. Among the options: software that, invisible to the user, tracks contextual factors like time and location, and how users type, wiggle their mouses and swipe screens; and biometric scanners for faces, eyes, voices, veins and even heartbeats, often in combination with a designated mobile device. Click to Play Russian hackers steal 1.2 billion usernames, passwords A gang of Russian hackers have stolen an enormous trove or usernames and passwords, according to cybersecurity firm Hold Security. Here’s what this means for Internet users. A working group to create password-alternatives, called the FIDO Alliance, released a draft of new standards for online authentication in February and plans to issue the final version by the end of the year. Its members include Google GOOG +0.96% , Bank of America BAC +0.53% , MasterCard MA +1.50% , Samsung KR:005930 -3.10% and PayPal. By 2015, a large portion of Internet users will say goodbye to the old-school username and password in favor of methods such as biometrics and one-time secure keys, especially after the big players in the group begin to adopt the new standards, says FIDO Alliance president and co-founder Michael Barrett. “Passwords…made absolutely fabulous sense back in the ‘60s. They make no sense now,” Barrett, who previously worked as chief information security officer at PayPal, says. Privacy advocates say part of the reason passwords are considered a pain—that they sometimes need to be changed—is also an advantage: If an intruder learns the code, you can write a new one. Your heartbeat and fingerprint, however, remain the same. But what makes passwords such an easy and prime target for cybercriminals is scalability. One cyber heist can yield thousands or even millions of account credentials, depending on the target. For a crook, biometrics produce far more barriers to entry. A thief could likely be forced to mold fingerprint replicas on an individual basis, or attempt to record someone’s heart activity without being noticed. Attacks against biometric security and other password alternatives “require physical access to us or our devices, and those don’t scale,” Barrett says. “How many people can I attack in a day? Two or three? From a bad guy perspective, it’s just not very interesting.” For some companies, passwords are already so yesterday. “We’ve eliminated usernames and passwords,” says Jonathan Klein, president of the Virginia-based software company MicroStrategy MSTR -0.03% , which designed an app called Usher. Usher checks who you are through options including voice and facial scans, verifying the device itself and tracking its location so people can only log into sensitive systems from specific locations or within boundaries, or for a limited time. The app then reveals a QR code that users scan at their workstation or on a website, and a code to authorize transactions over the phone. A fast-spreading virus that liquifies internal organs and kills six in 10 victims. Ebola is the stuff of nightmares – and horror movies. British acadmics have even talked about it being responsible for the Black Death plague epidemics of the Middle Ages which killed millions across Europe and Asia. Now doctors across the UK have been sent letters warning them to to look out for Ebola Hemmorrhagic Fever, one of the most deadly and infectious diseases in the world. It has killed hundreds in the world’s worst outbreak. Experts now fear it could spread beyond the borders of West Africa. More than 1,200 people have caught the virus and over 670 in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone have died as a result. On Friday a man died after flying 1,000 miles from Liberia to Nigeria, heightening concerns international air travel could speed up its spread. And experts admit the virus could find its way to Britain. Cambridge University’s Dr Peter Walsh, a lecturer in archaeology and anthropology and Ebola expert, says: “It’s possible someone infected will fly to Heathrow having infected other people sitting next to them or by using the toilet. https://i1.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article3928171.ece/alternates/s615/ebola-graphic.jpg Deadly: How the virus takes hold “This strain of Ebola is probably the second most deadly virus in the world after canine rabies. If you get canine rabies, you’re going to die, but we also have vaccines for that. “This is worse than anthrax, but there are vaccines and treatments for anthrax, too.” There is currently no cure or vaccine for Ebola. Even the front-line doctors have started falling victim to the disease they are trying to treat. Last week a Liberian medic, Dr Samuel Brisbane, died after contracting the disease and Kent Brantly, a US doctor from a medical charity working in the region, has fallen ill with the disease. The infection, spread via bodily fluids, begins with symptoms including a fever and sore throat then develops to vomiting, diarrhoea and profuse internal and external bleeding. Victims may die of multi-organ failure within days of first contact with the bug. Some strains can kill up to 90% of sufferers. But Dr Walsh says any cases that reached Britain would be far more manageable. He says: “Ebola is pretty containable with modern methods in modern countries. You won’t see a major outbreak in the UK.” But, as a precaution, British doctors have been sent letters from the Government’s Public Health England telling them to watch for anyone with strange illnesses who have travelled in West Africa. https://i2.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article3928170.ece/alternates/s615/guinea-ebola-map.jpg Infected: The location of Ebola cases The body deals with potential outbreaks and Dr Brian McCloskey, its director of global health, said: “There is the recognition this is a problem that is not under control… At the moment its preparatory thinking rather than alarm.” PHE also has a phone line telling doctors what tests to do on patients who may have symptoms. The disease was first documented in 1976 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire, and was named after the river that runs through the country. It is known to be carried by bats but usually only affects people, and primates such as monkeys, living near the creatures on the edge of the tropical rainforests. Although conspiracy theorists will tell you that Ebola – along with Aids – was man-made, developed in a lab as a weapon by the CIA and tested in Africa, where it escaped into the wild. However ludicrous this sounds, Dr Walsh believes the virus does have huge potential as a weapon. He says: “The bio-terror people are worried about somebody weaponising Ebola and being able to deliver it in an aerosol form. “In that case it could be seriously nasty, because it would be just as deadly – but this way they’d have a means to really spread it.” GettyUndated file picture of an electronmicrograph of the Ebola virus Little bug: A magnified image of the Ebola virus https://i3.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article3928166.ece/alternates/s615/Undated-file-picture-of-an-electronmicrograph-of-the-Ebola-virus.jpg The first report of the current Ebola outbreak was in south-east Guinea in February, and infections levels steadily grew. These are the first cases of Ebola in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.Health experts from the World Health Organissation are trying to educate Africans on the dangers of burial rites, such as touching and washing dead bodies, which may increase the spread of the disease. Efforts to contain Ebola have also been hampered in areas of Sierra Leone where a distrust of Western medicine and belief in faith healers have seen locals ignore attempts at isolating infected patients. Dr Walsh believes medics should start using vaccines for Ebola even though they are in the early stages of development. He says: “They haven’t been licensed for human use but they work very well on lab monkeys. “If we have the technology to save these people why aren’t we doing it? The answer is that it’s Africa.” |

This may be the holy grail of weird sex crime stories: Police on Friday arrested a Murfreesboro, Tenn., man who was allegedly trying to have intercourse with a bar's ATM around 9:30pm, the Daily News Journal reports. Per the police report, 49-year old Lonnie Jackson Hutton "pulled down his pants and underwear exposing his genitals" and then attempted to have his way with the Boro Bar and Grill's cash machine. He "then began to walk ‘nude’ around the bar thrusting his hips in the air.” Police were called, and Hutton was told to wait on an outdoor picnic table until the authorities showed up. Then things allegedly got weirder. Per the report, Hutton then "again exposed himself and engaged in sexual intercourse with the wooden picnic table." He was, somehow, only charged with public intoxication, WGNS Radio reports, having been observed unsteady and with slurred speech. The Smoking Gun reports Hutton had bond set at $250 and has a July 1 court appearance scheduled; he remained behind bars as of yesterday. (Here's another weird one.)

A young couple have vowed never to eat at KFC again after they found a living moth swimming inside their drink. Nicky Hammond and boyfriend Jordan Laidler made a creepy discovery while dining at a KFC restaurant at Durham Retail Park at 2pm. The disgusting find was made even more worse because Nicky has a phobia of moths. Jordan, of Durham, said: "After we collected our food we noticed something in the drink. I opened up the cup and saw this moth still alive inside. "We were both absolutely disgusted. We've heard horrific stories about things being found in fast food before, but it had never happened to us. "They have got our order wrong in the past, but this is going a bit too far. "I am not too bothered about moths, but my girlfriend is scared of them. We haven't eaten anything at all since it happened." To add insult to injury, the queasy couple said they were angered further when restaurant staff refused to apologise. "We couldn't believe it," Jordan said. "We were only offered the cheapest piece of food from our receipt. "I mentioned it to staff quite discreetly as we didn't want to cause a fuss, but we weren't even offered an apology." A KFC spokesperson said: "We are very sorry for the couple's experience because we take both customer service and food quality extremely seriously. "The cups are sealed air tight until they are removed and stacked in a compact holder next to the drinks dispenser which makes any sort of contamination highly unlikely. Nonetheless, as soon we were made aware of the situation we apologised on the spot and offered a refund to Nicky Hammond, which was not accepted. "The couple phoned the store later that evening and a KFC employee apologised once again and offered them a full meal replacement plus 20% off their next meal. "We would like to reassure customers that our Durham Retail Park restaurant achieved a food hygiene rating of five out of five stars meaning that the business was found to have very good hygiene standards."
