uzzolik: I was only wondering. I observed that the fewer population also helped. I didnt know the predominant religion in Kenya since it was not pronounced unlike in Nigeria where religion and tribalism play major role in political circles. The Kenyan population is handful and manageable.thats why I noticed the system is organised and people obey laws and order. There was a law against carrying cellophine bags. People adhere to it. If you look at the streets they are very neat and I likes the idea of trees on the street. At the very least you can now prove the doubting Nigerian Thomas's that there trash talk should be limited within their villages. The loudest negative Nigerians commenting here are the usual typical villagers whose furthest journey was the nearest town centre. I hope you loved the culture, people & Kenyan hospitality including the weather. |

Kenyanstar: Daejoyoung During the 15 year period as a country Kenya we have made tremendous strides without the advantages of mineral wealth or other resources as oil like Nigeria. We have built more than 20,000km of new tarmacked roads, 4 new international airports with 1 being expanded, 1 more port(LAMU PORT) second biggest in Africa with an extra 2 ICD(Internal container Depot) in Nairobi & Naivasha. A new 1000km SGR railway track for both passenger and cargo services with the process of electrifying it to be able to run at speeds of 150-180km/hr from the current 120km/hr. Building of 2 extra referral hospital with a bed capacity of 5000, free maternal care, free primary, secondary education and loans for all eligible university students. Universal health care system. The change of constitution to allow devolution in form of counties has also brought development to another level. Counties have also helped in the speeding up of development agenda by allowing them to prioritize their own needs development wise. The dream to achieve our vision 2030 agenda is on course. |

Daejoyoung: Yeah 2030 may be unrealistic, probably by 2050 they can achieve it. Their Economy has been on the rise though since 2012. You are very wrong and misled that we cant achieve our vision 2030 projects... Let me enlighten you a little bit on what we have undergone as from 2002-2017(15year period) and the remaining almost 15 year period. Before 2002 Kenya was witnessing a negative 2% growth until after the new leadership of President Kibaki when the Kenyan economy started growing by double digits. The worst we experienced was during the economic recession where we whent down to 4%. |

nwoke37: What is Kenya’s economy based on? Tourism and Tea? The Kenyan economy is mainly agriculturally driven, ranging from food crop, cash crop and livestock. Another thing to note is that the Kenyan economy is dynamic in that the service industry which can also be attributed to tourism is another driver of the Kenyan commerce. Tea is the major export followed by coffee and a range of other value added products like milk etc. |

blob: I know the argument is long overdue but, i'll just like to educate my fellow Nigerians.. Nigeria has the potential for a lot more but the political class won't let it be. First criteria is quality of life. The quality of life is better by far in Kenya. Electricity: Power was stable during my four months stay, no single outage except on one occasion when we were given notice for routine maintenance.
Transportation: Matatus are cheap 10, 20 shillings for the same distance that will cost you 150 - 250 in Lagos, also very comfortable 3 a seat compared to 4 a seat in lagos, very easy to move around at any time of the day. I used to wonder why transportation in Kenya was cheap despite paying more money for fuel per litre and the high costs of clearing vehicles from the port in Mombassa. I came to one conclusion greed.
Education: Check University rankings, take some Nigerians through the Kenyan public school system they will turn out a lot better.
Orderliness: you don't see Kenyans jumping queue anyhow. Every country has it's challenges but its good that you are being open about the 2 countries. I love to hear advice from a foreigners point of view.

Daejoyoung: ok, but the comparison is meaningless, for example when you say education you may judge based on rankings from webometrics, some may find that too simplistic. Also Nigeria is a big country and far more populated than Kenya. l do not live in Lagos for instance, but my kind of person abhors the life in Lagos, while a host of my family members love Lagos, and it goes on and on. For infrastructure, a sizeable part of the Kenyan population have constant electricity(though they produce less megawatts in general than Nigeria) also because of this, there's a better ease of doing business in Kenya. that's as far as it goes. What else do you have in Nairobi in terms of infrastructure? the rail from mombassa to Nairobi shouldn't be compared to the ongoing massive rail projects across Nigeria. Whatever the Kenyans have posted here in terms of beauty, structures or architectures, they are not in short supply across Nigeria as well. ln summary, it is not as simple as saying this one is better than this one. Kenya is a much smaller country than Nigeria in terms of population and also in size, though this is not an excuse, it is a viable point, and thus the comparison sometimes would always be fruitless. Despite all the evidence both pictures & references Nigerian have refused to admit that Kenya is way ahead of them in every sector. The above pictures of our railway upgrade is a perfect example of the steps that Kenya has initiated in domineering the import market to its neighboring countries.

Daejoyoung: This is what was reported though... https://www.nairaland.com/4339499/18-african-countries-grew-gdp The parameters that ADB uses are basically what are essential pivotal points for any growth projection in a country.... For example the similarity between the Sahel solar project projected to produce upto 10,000 MW of power is a direct correlation to the Kenyan solar power plant in Northern part of te country that is going to be the biggest in Central & Sub Saharan Africa.

Daejoyoung: This is nice but was thesame for most African countries in 2017, majority grew at 5-6%. The African Development Bank just released this report of growth across Africa. You are incorrect, the ADB report was that the average of almost 95% of countries in Africa grew at a maximum rate of 3%... The exceptinal countries that grew at over 5-6% were Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana and Rwanda. |

blob: I agree with you that Its not as simple as saying one is better but I was specific about infrastructure and education. Those beautiful places in Nigeria you see, how many is as a result of governments direct effort, whereas the pictures from the Kenyan side show communal facilities, not someone's private property. A house/hotel is not infrastructure, Education: I for one don't rank Universities based on its Webometrics ranking. I look at things like Research output, Quality of research, and sometimes the number of international students in the institution. the public institutions in Kenya are way ahead in that regards as at now. I am very excited about Convenant Univerisity though, their research output is impressive.
Like you I also abhor life in Lagos despite having lived most of my life there, commuting 5 hours a day is not easy, i am considering moving to a city like Ibadan, Akure or Ilorin, Problem is getting a job in those cities.. All that said, the opportunity in Nigeria is enormous,we just need to get things right. You are very correct in your informed view.... The rapid development happening in Kenya is the reason why the GDP is growing at 5-6% despite the politics.... KENYA INDUSTRIES TEA FACTORY & TEA ESTATES(farms)
