Emzybrown: Its wonderful stumbling upon this thread, well let me share my own experience.
I was admitted 2008, then i was down with a terminal illness but thank God i survived it, then in my 100level i wrote both 1st and 2nd semester without attending lectures, missed most tests meaning no CA for me, when all my results were out my CGPA was like 2.6. Then during second year i had my surgery and i was well and fit to study again, i began working hard, i am hardly a social type, i began reading with top students in my class, weekdays i usually come home late and i go to school to read even on weekends.
Am now in final year 500level and my CGPA up-till 400level is 3.34, am still hoping that my final year exam will boost my CGPA further into above 3.5 by Gods grace. What really helped was
1. I mixed alot with bookworms my guys read alot. 2. I studied my lecturers as to what they expect from you in exams, like some lecturers prefer you to write detailed answer, some will want you to go straight to point, some will want you to write exactly what they gave you then others will prefer you to make some researches. 3. Past questions will help prepare your own exam before the main exam. 4. Read far ahead before semester exam atleast you must have covered you scope 3x 5. God factor, determination and keep motivating yourself till you achieve your aim. u re very ryt, especially dah num 2, lecturere re lyk dat u ave 2 study dem and knw wah dey want. One of my lecturers lyks scholar quote alot dah if u giv him lyk 5 definitions 4rm scholars, to him u re a genius and it'll boost ur mark. So knwin wat ur lecturer wants is also essential |

yea i agree wit peter, try 2 find out 4rm dose who re topin in ur department (both seniors and ur mates) wat dey do dah u dont. It really helps, dere's a girl in my class dat's always avin As while i ave B, wen i asked her wat she does, she told she answers all questns b4 goin into d exam hall, wen i tried it i found everytin easy i dint ave 2 rack my brain in d exam hall, everytin wz juz comin. U knw; as an international relations student, our lecturers give us AOC (area of concentration) 4 exam so we alredi knw d questns dey'll set and even if dey dont giv us, we use our brain 2 detect d questn dat'll come out. So all m sayin is, pple ave secrets dey use in doin well in exams dan odas, u jez ave 2 find out. Anyways, u can still get there; d diff btw here and there is "T" and T=Time so wit time and hardwork u'll make it |

chronique: A message to the silly Nigerian illiterates always posting and typing stupid comments on every thread on Nairaland:
Y'all should learn/try to find out more about certain issues before posting your stupid opinions on this forum and embarrassing other Nigerians(before foreigners on this forum start having the impression that Nigerians are mostly illiterates),or better still,go back to school to get proper education.
According to wiikipedia:
An honorary degree or a degree honoris causa (Latin: "for the sake of the honor" is an academic degree for which a university (or other degree-awarding institution) has waived the usual requirements, such as matriculation, residence, study and the passing of examinations. The degree is typically a doctorate or, less commonly, a master's degree and may be awarded to someone who has no prior connection with the academic institution.
The degree is often conferred as a way of honouring a "distinguished" visitor's contributions to a specific field or to society in general. It is often given to graduation speakers at a university or college. The university often derives benefits by association with the person in question. The degree is not recognized by employers as having the same stature as a corresponding 'earned' doctorate and should not be represented as such. It is sometimes recommended that such degrees be listed in one's CV as an award and not in one's education section, and some institutions of higher education have policies on the use of the title "Dr" in formal correspondence.
According to the little I know, and the procedures of some American universities I know:
An honorary degree is one of higher education’s most significant accolades. It is the policy of a University to award honorary degrees on a selective basis to distinguished individuals who merit special recognition for genuine achievement and distinction in a field or activity in line with the mission of the University. Only the Board of Directors may authorize the award of an honorary degree.
An honorary degree may be awarded to a person who satisfies the following criteria:
Eminence, in the course of a career, in some field of scholarship, in public service, or in an artistic, literary, governmental, religious, financial, or other endeavor; and An adequate reason for recognition by that specific University, in the form of an association or relationship with the University or a nexus between the individual’s achievements and the mission or life of the University. In recognition of the University’s commitment to gender equality and social, economic, national, racial, and cultural diversity, the Board of Directors is committed to the award of honorary degrees to recipients who reflect the diversity of interests, backgrounds, and concerns reflected in the University community and the society and world served by the University.
Those of you talking about how she must have paid for it,or how substandard the awarding institution is,or how she managed to get it with her poor command of English, etc., need to bury your heads in shame. You guys are a disgrace to whatever institution you currently attend/finished from.
Education is a legacy everyone should have but unfortunately, most Nigerians don't have it(despite the fact that they attended higher institutions). It's not just enough to come out with first class or distinction;get educated and let it reflect when you talk in public. tell them oooh my brother, we all knw its a strategy used by s/korea to achieve somethin, buh weda its a strategy or not, its just a honourary degree. It can b given to anyone dey tink deserves it, just lyk countries give honorary citizenship |
