Québec City mosque shooting: man charged with six counts of murder

Alexandre Bissonnette, 27, also charged with five counts of attempted murder in attack prime minister Justin Trudeau called act of terrorism

A 27-year-old university student has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder over a shooting at a Québec City mosque during evening prayers, in what the Canadian prime minister described as an act of terror.

Alexandre Bissonnette, a student in the social sciences faculty at Laval University, also faces five charges of attempted murder.

Bissonnette did not enter a plea during a brief court appearance late on Monday. Wearing a white prisoner jump suit, his hands and feet shackled, he stared down at the floor and fidgeted, but remained silent.

A local group dedicated to welcoming refugees, Bienvenu aux réfugiés, said Bissonnette’s name was familiar to them, describing him as an online troll who had denigrated refugees and expressed support for Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s far-right Front National.

In a Facebook post, the group said Bissonnette was “unfortunately known by several militants in Québec City for his viewpoints that were pro-LePen and anti-feminist, as expressed in social media and at the Université Laval”.

Others who knew Bissonnette described him a timid introvert who was a staunch supporter of US president Donald Trump. “He loved Trump a lot and seemed to be permanently set against the left, Éric Debroise told the Journal de Québec. He said had reached out to police in the wake of the shooting to inform them that Bissonnette is “far right and an ultra nationalist white supremacist”.

Another classmate, Jean-Michel Allard Prus, described Bissonnette as someone with “right-wing political ideas, pro-Israel, anti-immigration. I had many debates with him about Trump,” he said. “He was obviously pro-Trump.” But Bissonnette had never broached the idea of violence as a political tool, he added.

The charges came hours after the attack at the Québec City Islamic cultural center, also known as the Grande Mosquée de Québec, during evening prayers. Six people were killed and another 19 injured.

Five people remain in critical condition in hospital.

Police initially said two men had been arrested after the attack. But later in the day, provincial police clarified that only one was a suspect and they had released the other – considered to be a witness – without charges.

The brazen attack left the tight-knit Muslim community in Québec City reeling. Many had been awake all night waiting for details of the shooting to trickle in. “I can’t express the grief that has touched our community,” said Mohamed Labidi, a spokesman for the Quebec City Islamic cultural center. “This tragedy occurred in a place of prayer, with people who were praying.”

Through tears he added: “It’s a very, very big tragedy for us. We have a sadness we cannot express.”

On Monday, the names and identities of the six people killed in the attack began to emerge. All of them were fathers.

Azzedine Soufiane, 57, a grocer and father of three, was well-known in the community and beloved for the time he spent helping newcomers adjust to the city.

Khaled Belkacemi, 60, was a professor in the food science department at Laval University. “Our university community is in mourning today,” rector Denis Briere said in a statement. “We mourn the death of an esteemed member of the faculty and the university, a devoted and beloved man of his colleagues and students.”

Also among those killed was Abdelkrim Hassane, 41, an information technology worker for the government and father of three, as well as Aboubaker Thabti, 44, a Tunisian-born father of two.

Mamadou Tanou Barry, 42, and Ibrahima Barry, 39, close friends who had emigrated from Guinea to Canada, were also killed, leaving behind four and two children respectively.

The attack shocked many in this quiet city, home to just over 500,000 people. Violence is rare here – in 2015, the city reported just two murders.

“Québec Muslims are frightened right now,” said Haroun Bouazzi, president of the AMAL-Quebec, a human rights group based in Montreal. “We are urgently waiting for answers as to how and why such a tragedy could occur.”

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister, condemned the attack on Monday. “Make no mistake, this was a terrorist attack. This was a group of innocents targeted for practicing their faith,” he said. “To the more than 1 million Canadians who profess the Muslim faith, I want to say directly, we are with you 36 million hearts are breaking with yours.”

He urged Canadians to stand in solidarity with those affected by the attack. “We will grieve with you, we will defend you, we will love you and we will stand with you.”

Phillippe Couillard, the premier of Québec, described Sunday’s shooting as a “murderous act directed at a specific community” and also expressed his solidarity with Muslims in Québec. “Québec categorically rejects this barbaric violence.” Security had been increased at mosques across the province, he added.

Vigils were planned across the country, while people around the world used social media to express their condolences and voice their support for the mosque. A Go fund me page, set up to help the families of the victims with funeral costs, had raised more than C$120,000 by Monday evening.

Foreign AffairsShooting At Quebec City Mosque In Canada Leaves 6 Killed, 8 Injured by khalling2008(op): 6:46am On Jan 30, 2017
Multiple people reported killed and injured by gunmen at Quebec City mosque
By Derek Hawkins and Alan Freeman
January 30 at 12:03 AM

Multiple people were killed and others injured Sunday after gunmen opened fire on worshipers at a Quebec City mosque as evening prayers were ending in what Quebec’s premier described as an act of terrorism.

The mosque’s president told Reuters that five people were killed. Police said via Twitter that there were “deaths and injuries” but did not specify a number. A police spokesperson said that two suspects had been arrested.

“The situation is under control, the premises are secure and the occupants were evacuated,” police said in a tweet. “The investigation is ongoing.”

Witnesses said that two gunmen, some reports said three, opened fired at the Quebec Islamic Cultural Center. Local media reported that between 60 and 100 people were inside.

“Why is this happening here? This is barbaric,” the mosque’s president, Mohamed Yangui, told Reuters.

Speaking on RDI, Quebec City police spokesman Etienne Doyon said that the shootings took place as prayers were ending Sunday evening.

Witnesses reported that at least two hooded shooters entered the mosque and opened fire on congregants who had remained there after the end of prayers. Other said the shooters were wearing ski masks.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the attack “cowardly” and said Canadians grieved for the victims.

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard condemned the attacks in a tweet and called for solidarity with Muslims in Quebec. “Quebec categorically rejects this barbaric violence,” he said. Later he Tweeted that it was an act of terrorism.

The Quebec Islamic Cultural Center is located near Laval University, which has a large community of international students, many from French-speaking Africa and the Maghreb.

The mosque, one of several in the area, was the target of a hate crime last June when a pig’s head was left at the front door with the message “Bonne appétit,” as The Washington Post reported at the time. The consumption of pork is banned by Islam. Concerned about that kind of incident, the mosque installed several closed-circuit cameras around the building.

The shooting is a particular shock for Quebec City, a quiet white-collar city with a low crime rate. In 2015, the city reported two murders. The metropolitan area has 800,000 people.

According to La Presse, the province’s leading newspaper, police were also treating the attack as a terrorist incident and had activated a joint task force involving municipal police, Quebec’s provincial police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Samer Majzoub, the president of the Canadian Muslim Forum, a Muslim advocacy group in Quebec, said he knows people who attend the Quebec City mosque, but that he and other area Muslim leaders were still trying frantically to find out who had been shot.

“People that we know, we are not sure if they’re alive right now. They’re saying about five confirmed, a dozen injured. And the police are cordoning all the area,” he told The Post. “It is shocking. It never came to our mind that we’d have a terrorist act as such, especially in Canada.”

Majzoub said Canada has seen increasing anti-Muslim hostility over the past year, but still nowhere near the level witnessed in the United States and Europe. But he said the area where the mosque has appeared to be particularly prone to anti-Muslim sentiments. “This masjid has witnessed a lot of issues before — threats and vandalism, and some Islamophobic graffiti,” he said, using the Arabic word for mosque. “It’s not the first time.”

Majzoub said the mosque has a small congregation of about a hundred people and attracts a lot of students because it’s near a university. He said many of its attendees are of North African descent.

“We never thought it could happen,” he said. “It was a slaughter.”

This is a breaking story and will be updated.

McDonald's to pay $50k to a Muslim employee who wasn't allowed to grow a beard

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says the settlement was reached Thursday with McDonald's Restaurants of California.

According to the suit, Shaheed Khan was a crew trainer at a Fresno McDonald's in 2005 when he asked to wear a beard to work, citing religious beliefs. He quit after the request was refused.

The commission filed a lawsuit alleging civil rights violations. Under the settlement, McDonald's agreed to pay $50,000 to Shaheen and to reinforce training of its managers and staff on existing anti-discrimination policies.

The company didn't acknowledge any wrongdoing.

Christianity EtcKilling Nigerian Christians because Of 'wrongdoings' Of The Jewish State by khalling2008(op): 8:12am On Oct 27, 2013
Contrary to what most Nigerians think, Israel is NOT a Christian country!
I have always known this but decided to post this because I got into an argument with someone on this issue. The argument, by the way, was triggered by the Jonathan trip.

"Israel is also the only country in the world where a majority of citizens are Jewish. According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics, the population in 2011 was 75.4% Jewish, 20.6% Arab, and 4.1% minority groups."

"The religious affiliation of the Israeli population as of 2011 was
75.4% - Jewish,
16.9% - Muslim,
2.1% - Christian, and
1.7% - Druze,
and the remaining 4.0% not classified by religion." - Wikipedia.

The implication of the above is that it is utterly stupid for some idiots to be killing Nigerian Christians because of the perceived 'wrongdoings' of the Jewish State. Ignorance is indeed a horrible disease

PoliticsUK To Repatriate 267 Nigerian Prisoners by khalling2008(op): 8:16pm On Oct 15, 2013
Former Delta State Governor, James Ibori and about 267 Nigerians serving in various prisons across the United Kingdom may be deported to Nigeria to complete their sentences under the UK’s new prisoner transfer agreement, which is currently being discussed.

According to UK’s Prisons Minister, Jeremy Wright, this number is about half of the 534 Nigerians currently in UK jails, making Nigeria to rank among the top ten countries whose nationals are serving in British jails.

He said, “I am clear that more foreign prisoners must serve their sentences in their own countries. That is why we are currently working with the Nigerian Government on a compulsory prisoner transfer agreement to increase the number of prisoners who are transferred.

“Legislation allowing Nigeria to enter such an arrangement was passed earlier this year by the Nigerian Parliament. We are now working with them on the text of a final agreement.”

A major stumbling block to deportation of foreign nationals in the past has been the condition of prisons in their own countries, but the UK has promised £1million (N250 million) to Nigeria to help improve its jails.

There are currently 10,786 foreign prisoners in British jails, down just three per cent from the 11,135 incarcerated when David Cameron came to power more than three years ago.

Cameron had in 2010 vowed to personally intervene to send more foreign criminals home.

In April 2013, he reaffirmed his commitment, and said, “When people are sent to prison in the UK we should do everything we can to make sure that if they’re foreign nationals, they are sent back to their country to serve their sentence in a foreign prison.

“And I’m taking action in Government to say look we have strong relationships with all of the countries where these people come from.

“Many are coming from Jamaica, many from Nigeria, many from other countries in Asia. We should be using all of the influence we have to sign prisoner transfer agreements with those countries. Even if necessary frankly helping them to build prisons in their own country so we can send the prisoners home.”

Polish nationals make up the highest foreign contingent in jails in England and Wales, with 829 currently behind bars.

Irish criminals are second with 769, and Jamaica is third with 759.
Romanians, Nigerians, Pakistanis, Indians, Lithuanians, Somalians and Vietnamese make up the rest of the top ten.

Christianity EtcDeeper Life Pastor Defiles 2 Under-aged Girls by khalling2008(op): 9:42pm On Jul 18, 2013
A Nigerian Pastor with Deeper life Bible Church, Abudu, in Orhiomnwon Local Government Area, Eze Fidels, has been paraded by the Edo State Command of the Nigerian Police for defiling two underaged girls.

Also, three suspected rapists, a robbery gang, including a woman, who specialized in robbing unsuspecting passengers using private cars which they masquerade as taxi cabs, were among the 32 suspected criminals paraded by the police.

Pastor Fidelis was said to have lured the two girls, aged six, into his room after sending them on an errand. The police claimed he had carnal knowledge of them before dismissing them.

Father of one of the girls who noticed the unusual way his daughter was walking when she got home, obtained confession from her, which led to the arrest of the paedophile pastor.

Eze who confessed to the act, said he had actually defiled two other minors, both of them 11 years old sometimes this year, but said he was tempted by evil spirit to commit the act.

“I am really ashamed of myself particularly as a Pastor. I have been a Pastor at Deeper Life for over six years but I was tempted to defile these girls. They are always visiting me, so this particularly day I defiled both of them,” he said.

Edo state police commissioner, Folusho Adebanjo, who paraded the suspects to journalists in Benin, also displayed various arms and amunitions recovered from them.

He disclosed that few weeks after the state government placed ban on the use of motorcycle in the Benin metropolis, criminals have devised ways to rob unsuspecting commuters, using private cars as taxi cabs.

Adebanjo further disclosed that the command had apprehended over 90 suspected armed robbers and kidnappers in the past five weeks but expressed worry in the rising cases of defilement of minors across the state.

“Today we have 32 suspects that we are parading and they are involved different crimes, ranging from armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and people who are involved in defilement of the girl child. This defilement thing in the state now is very very disturbing, we will not allow them to go scot free. And that is why we continue to appeal to members of the public to always give us useful information because we cannot do it alone.

“But let me also alert members of the public, there is an emerging crime since the ban on Okada was effected, it is called one chance. What they do is that they always have a woman amongst them so that will make you not to suspect them. There is always somebody that claims to be a Pastor with them, they will deceive you to say you have a particular problem and they will rob you of everything.

“One of their victims a lady had to go to bank to withdraw N150,000. We are going to work with Road Safety and the Board of Internal Revenue so that all vehicles on the road must be registered. People should shine their eyes very well, they are using some vehicles pretending to be taxi drivers,” he stated.

To check this, Mr. Adebanjo called on the Edo State Revenue Board and the Federal Roads Safety Commission (FRSC) to ensure registration of vehicles both old and new that have flooded the sate capital since the ban on commercial motor cycling

Christianity EtcRape In Church: The Devil Used Me – Bishop by khalling2008(op): 7:42am On Jul 07, 2013
MANY found it hard to believe. They made calls to confirm if those  close to the bishop had heard the story.

But the  ‘man of God’ himself told the story before journalists at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Bishop Chibuike Nwabueze narrated the story of how he allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl after ministering at Calvary Army Ministry, Rumuoji Eneka in Obio Akpor local government area of Rivers state.

He blamed it on the devil and also accused his host as the one who set him up. According to the cleric, after he finished ministering, he retired to rest. The girl later came for deliverance.

He said that while he was pleading the blood of Jesus on the little girl, she started removing her dress. Before he could restrain her, he said he found himself on top of her.

“But to my greatest surprise, I was surprised when I saw her pulling off her blouse and skirt. But, before I knew it, I had a carnal knowledge of her. That is the truth of the matter.”

His head suddenly dropped after the confession, then went up again; this time he said anybody could have fallen for it.

According to him, when he realised he had sinned against God, he called some junior pastors to tell them what he had done to pray for him.

Nwabueze said he took a second look at the little girl who probably was still lying nude and waiting for a second round and what he saw pissed him off.

“She started laughing at me. She said ‘are you angry?’ I told her that I did not know she had hypnotised me. She said I should not bother,” the bishop said.

“I was so angry and annoyed that I called some of my pastors and made a confession, that I did not know what was happening.”

Nwabueze said it was not true that he raped the girl, stressing that it was a consensual act. He also dismissed the  allegation that he later procured abortion for the girl when the father called to inform him that she was pregnant.  According to him, it was the girl’s father that did it but he paid the bills.

The bishop maintained that the pastor of the church where he went to preach set him up and he fell for it.

“We have different Colleges of Bishops. I am the Chairman of  the Communion of Bishops in Rivers State. Well, what actually happened was a set up. It was set-up by my enemies. I have so many people who are my enemies. The man in-charge of where I went to minister is my enemy. He is the person that set me up,” he stated.

“He invited me to his church for a programme, claiming  to be my friend. After the programme, he set me up because of  the tussle over the chairmanship of the communion.”

Meanwhile, the police have advised Christians to be vigilant and ask the right questions sometimes on the actions of some pastors. This way the police said, Christians could different between true and fake pastors.

Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of  Rivers SCID, Mr Samuel Okaula, who paraded the bishop and a male nurse who allegedly facilitated the abortion, also said people should be conscious of worship centres. He said Nwabueze would be arraigned before the court to serve as a deterrent.

Reacting to the development, Executive Director, Institute of Human rights and Humanitarian Law, IHRHL, Mr Ayankwee Nsirimovu, described the action of the bishop as unfortunate as  it was done by one in a position of spiritual trust.  He said the incident was one case out of  the experiences of under aged girls, married and single women in the offices of  randy bishops and clergy men.

Former Synagogue Transforms into Mosque

First it was a synagogue, then a church and now the property at 7401 Limekiln Pike will be transformed into a mosque.

The former West Oak Lane Church of God complex in Northwest Philadelphia has a new owner. Masjidullah Inc.(pronounced Mass-jid-Allah) purchased the church building and office annex for $1 million last month.

“All of us are in shock we were able to pull it off,” said Nafeesa Malik, Masjidullah assistant treasurer and Sunday school director. “I find it very exciting. It literally happened overnight.”

The Muslim population continues to grow throughout the greater Philadelphia area and the new mosque will be the largest center in the region for Muslims to gather.

According to Temple University’s Khalid Blackinship, there are about 30,000 Muslims and 50 mosques in Philadelphia. Blackinship says those numbers double when considering the suburban population.

“Fifty plus years ago there weren’t any Muslims in Philly. The purchase of the building is a major step and it will be a showcase building,” said Blackinship.

The building at the corner of Limekiln Pike and Washington Avenue has been a place of worship for the surrounding community for decades.

The 1947 structure was first home to Temple Sinai, which in the 1970s moved to Dresher in Montgomery County, Pa. The building was then converted to a Christian church and will now house a mosque, school and community center.

Rabbi Adam Wohlberg of Temple Sinai has not seen the inside of the former temple and soon-to-be mosque, but frequently drives by.

"The people who invested time and energy in the building think of it with great fondness," said Wohlberg. "I'm happy it's going to be occupied by another faith community."

The former temple was the hub of the neighborhood and people who attended the synagogue typically lived right in the neighborhood. Jewish families moved into the area after World War II, according to the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Collection. The neighborhood continued to see change over the years. People moved to the suburbs as did the temple, according to Wohlberg. Today, the West Oak Lane neighorhood is predominantly African American.

In the 1970s, the West Oak Lane Church of God community moved in and remained active until the building's sale last month. The church outgrew the building according to Linda Sheppard, the pastor's wife. Since the sale, the West Oak Lane Church of God community has moved their church services and events to rented space at New Covenant Campus in Germantown.

Resident Imam Mikal Shabazz said a member of the non-denominational church's board of trustees said during the settlement, "When I look across the room and see who's buying the building, I'm glad it's in your hands."

"We wish the mosque well," said Sheppard.

Masjidullah leaders sat around a table last July and discussed how they’d come up with the money to purchase a new mosque to expand their reach. The community had been nestled in their current location, a storefront at the corner of 77th and Ogontz Avenue, for the past 30 years. The $1 million purchase was financed through United Bank, with $432,477 in donations raised in less than a year and $300,000 still needed for the renovations.

“Our vision is to provide a first class center for education and vital community services that will uplift and enliven all of Philadelphia,” said Shabazz, a retired Army reservist.

“Obviously prayer is important, and our prayer hall will be large enough to accommodate Muslims from all over the city.”

Masjidullah expects to open a daycare, Sunday school and an after school program this fall. Then, it will open a full Islamic school, welcoming both Muslims and non-Muslims, in 2014. Renovation to the 25,000 square foot building has already begun.

Pike’s Seafood co-owner Lisa DiLeonardo is looking forward to her new neighbors moving in across the street. “I welcome them,” she said.

The Masjidullah planning committee is spearheaded by Michael Rashid, president and chief operating officer of AmeriHeatlh Caritas, formerly known as AmeriHealth Mercy Family of Companies and a national leader in Medicaid managed care.

“I’ve been blessed to become a CEO of a major company in Philadelphia. We have to step up as business people,” said Rashid. “I’m inspired by the effort of Muslims and non-Muslims working for the common good to solve community problems.”

Former police commissioner Sylvester Johnson, Councilman Curtis Jones Jr. and State Representative Ronald Waters are among Masjidullah’s members. The community has 200 families on its present rolls but expects to double or even quadruple that number in the coming year. The new facility will become one of the largest Islamic institutions in the city.

The prayer area can hold 1,500 people. The building has 14 classrooms, a banquet hall, a playground, gym and a separate office building with space available for lease.

“This facility will allow us to educate our children by providing a safe, Islamically-based education program,” said Rashid.

“The new facility will enable Masjidullah to serve as a city-wide masjid or ‘grand mosque’ that works for the unity of the Muslim community; and be a unifying force in building alliances with other faith and community groups.”

Long standing Imam Muhamad Abdul-Aleem points to the Masjidullah’s “long history of interfaith dialogue” as a fixture for the community’s success since its formation in the 1970s.

Wohlberg would like to develop a relationship with the West Oak Lane Baptist Church and Masjidullah communities, bringing together all three congregations who once occupied the same building on Limekiln Pike.

"I'd like to dialogue, worship together and show appreciation for the greater community we are all a part of," said Wohlberg.

Another Baby Born With Quran In Lagos

Residents from various parts of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, have been coming to catch a glimpse of a baby allegedly born with a miniature Quran at 9, Oguntade Street, Shasha area of the state.

Incidents like these are scientifically impossible, but residents of the area say it is true even though some of them confessed that they did not see the baby clutching the miniature Quran, the holy book of the Muslims. They were only told about it.

It took efforts for P.M.NEWS reporters to gain access into the one-room apartment of the baby’s parents as a result of the crowd that took over the place.

The mother of the baby, Kabirat Lamidi, a 32-year old hairstylist, said right from the conception of the baby, she had been sick.

She said when the baby refused to come out after 11 months, she went for a scan where it was shown that she had an object in the womb with the baby.

The Ede, Osun State indigene who said she had been married for 10 years, said she was shocked to discover that few seconds after the baby was delivered, she pushed out a Quran.

“I have been hearing about such incidents and I have always insulted people thinking it could never happen. I believe it is a gift from Allah,” she said.

She said as a Muslim, she was not even dedicated and did not know how to pray, expressing surprise that such an incident could happen to her.

The mother of three said she had always given birth in the hospital but that on this day, she went into labour so fast that she could not move.

“My advice to people is that they should henceforth watch their mouth. I didn’t believe before now,” she said.

Mrs. Saudat Olawuwo, a staff nurse with the Shasha Medical Centre who assisted with the delivery, said she was called by neighbours when the woman was in labour.

Mrs. Olawuwo with 17 years working experience, said the woman was supposed to put to birth on 16 May, but it did not happen.

“By the time I came the day she was in labour, the baby was already coming out. So I assisted her.

“After that, we were expecting the placenta, but the woman began behaving like one about to run mad. I was so confused.

“The woman was shouting that she wanted to push again and all of a sudden, the Quran, wrapped in nylon and stained with blood jumped out.

“Out of confusion, I ran out and called people who came to see. We also called a Muslim cleric around the area who came and prayed for the baby,” she said.

Father of the baby, Luqman Lamidi, said he was in a drinking bar when he was called and told that his wife had delivered a baby with a Quran.

He said he did not believe until he came and saw the Quran covered with blood.

“I arrived home and saw a lot of crowd and could not even enter. In fact, I am surprised that a drunk like me could produce a child that came into this world with a Quran,” he said, adding that he had become a changed person.

Chief Imam of Oguntade, Shasha, Alhai AbdulRafiu Opeloyeru Oyedokun, said he was the one who tore the nylon from the Quran after he was called to the place.

“When I came, people were still doubting if the object was a Quran or not, so I tore the nylon with blood on it publicly and everyone confirmed it.”
