Italian police say they have arrested 15 Muslim migrants after they allegedly threw 12 Christians overboard following a row on a boat heading to Italy.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has apprehended four suspected drug traffickers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos for attempting to smuggle cocaine to Brazil.
It was learnt that the suspects ─ Ejiofor Eliezer (46), Obah Francis (30), Akpa Sobuzochukwu (27) and 36-year-old Ike Okechukwu ─ excreted 171 wraps of drug that tested positive for cocaine.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the discovery was made during the screening of passengers on board Qatar and Emirates airlines.
Eliezer, who excreted 100 wraps of the drug, told investigators that poverty pushed him to commit the crime, adding that he had intended to use the expected proceed to fend for his family of four.
“I live in Brazil, where I work in a supermarket and lived with my wife and four children. Life in Brazil is tough because I live from hand to mouth. It was poverty that made me to smuggle drugs. I took risk by swallowing 100 wraps of cocaine for N200,000 because of poverty.”
Francis said he took to drug trafficking to augment the meager salary he earned at a bakery in Brazil.
“I am single and have been working in Brazil for two years. At present, I work in a bakery and my salary is meager. My plan was to give the drug to a friend in Dubai, but he did not come to collect the drug as planned. This was how I had to come to Nigeria with the drug. I blame my friend for my arrest because I would have made S15,000 (about N2.8m) from the deal.”
Sobuzochukwu, who holds a diploma in accounting, also said his poor salary as a cleaner forced him to ingest 26 wraps of cocaine for a fee of S1,500 (about N285,000).
Okechukwu said he did not think that he would be arrested. He said he had thought that the five wraps of cocaine he ingested would not be detected.
“I regret my involvement in drug trafficking. I dropped out of school in Junior Secondary School class two and I work in a toy company in Brazil,” he added.
The NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, said Brazil-Nigeria route was a high risk path to drug trafficking and urged officers to be vigilant.
“The suspects will soon be charged to court,” Giade added.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, as the winner of the April 11 election while the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, came second.
But while Agbaje had called to congratulate Ambode, the PDP in the state rejected the result, citing “controversial circumstances” within which the elections were conducted.
Out of the 20 local government areas in Lagos, Ambode won in 15 while Agbaje won in five.
The Lagos State Collation Officer, Prof. Isaac Adewole, noted that Ambode polled 811,994 votes while Agbaje got 659,788 votes, a difference of 152, 206 votes.
The media aide to Ambode, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, told our correspondent on the telephone that Agbaje had congratulated Ambode.
He said, “Mr. Jimi Agbaje called at exactly 6.50pm to congratulate Mr. Ambode. He prayed for Mr. Ambode and told him that he was looking forward to a more prosperous Lagos.”
However, the Lagos State chapter of the PDP in a statement by its Legal Adviser, Mr. Adeleke Adefala, said card readers were manipulated in areas where the APC won.
The statement, which was addressed to the Resident Electoral Commissioner, read, “I, on behalf of our governorship candidate, the state assembly candidates and the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State write to bring to your attention the following issues for your immediate attention and resolution.
“Our candidates have brought to our attention that contrary to electoral rules and guidelines, the newly introduced card readers were not used in the following local governments: Epe, Babagry, Mushin, Ikorodu, Eti Osa, Alimosho, Ikeja, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos Island and some parts of other local governments.
“This amounted to no proper accreditation of voters and a denouncement of the sanctity of the voting process. There were numerous complaints of front and uploading of the card readers with fictitious names before commencement of accreditation in areas where card readers were used such as Lagos Island, Ikorodu, Kosofe, Lagos Mainland and Badagry.
“We hereby demand for the suspension of the collation and release of the results pending investigation into our complaints.”

A 15-year-old girl and two others were critically injured on Friday in an auto crash at the popular Arepo Bus Stop on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway area of Ogun State.
Commercial motorcyclists and other sympathisers rushed the injured victims to the nearest hospital for medical attention.
An eyewitness said the accident, which involved a Toyota Sienna car marked APP 947 CQ and a truck marked YN 163 XA, occurred as both vehicles were struggling to overtake each other.
Another eyewitness, Olamilekan Akande, 40, explained that the accident occurred as the truck’s driver was trying to avoid hitting a stationary bus and thereby swerved to the direction of the Toyota car.
“The accident happened in my presence. I saw how it happened and I am ready to testify anywhere on how it occurred. It was the back of the truck that hooked up the front part of the Toyota car and dragged it on the road while the driver was overtaking it,” Akande said.
But both drivers blamed the crash on each other.
The 35-year-old driver of the Toyota car, who simply identified himself as Obina Uraka, accused the driver of the articulated vehicle, Mr. Mosudi Adigun, 50, of wrongful overtaking, while the latter said Uraka hit his vehicle from the rear, leading to the fatal destruction of the car.
Our correspondent noted that two of the victims were in critical condition when he visited the hospital, but the Medical Director, Dr. Abiola Ajayi, assured them of adequate treatment.
The 15-year-old victim, Cocy Onyemechi, whose right leg was affected, said she was fast asleep when the crash occurred, adding that it was the dragging of the car by the truck that woke her up.
When contacted for comment, the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said he was not aware of the crash, but promised to get back to our correspondent after investigating the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, however, the police spokesperson had yet to comment on the crash.

The family of Ezekiel Emmanuel, a 13-year-old attendant allegedly set ablaze by his boss for stealing, have buried the boy at a public cemetery in Lagos.
This is just as the Ogun State Police Command said it was still searching for the suspect, Mr. Bidemi Shittu, who had been at large since the day of incident.
PUNCH Metrohad reported on February 13, that Shittu, the manager of Golden Fingers Bar, on Akoka Road, Ibafo, Ogun State, allegedly dragged the teenager out on the evening of Sunday, February 8, poured petrol on him and set him ablaze.
He allegedly claimed that the boy allegedly stole N1, 500.
It was reported that some neighbours rescued the victim and rushed him to a private hospital in the area before he was referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
However, Emmanuel, who sustained severe burns from his head to abdomen, died five days later in LASUTH.
The matter, which was reported to the Ibafo Police Division, was later transferred to the state police headquarters in Abeokuta.
Speaking withPUNCH Metroon Tuesday, the father, Ezekiel, said the family members were filled with sorrow as they held the burial, particularly as the suspect had yet to be arrested by the police.
He said, “We just got his body from the LASUTH morgue. We are taking it to the cemetery for burial. We have not heard anything from the police. The suspect is still on the run.
“But his bar and his father’s hotel have remained sealed off by the police since the time of the incident.
“We are indeed very sorrowful. Emmanuel is my only son.
“He was not even working as an attendant in the bar. He only came to stay there after leaving a mechanic workshop where he was an apprentice.
“The suspect has refused to turn himself in because he knows that he is guilty.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, assured the public that the police would get the suspect arrested, no matter the time he spent in hiding.
He said, “This is a murder case; it does not have a statute of limitation.
“If it is 20 years that we are able to arrest the suspect, the case continues.
“So, we will get him certainly.”

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria - Islamist Boko Haram militants disguised as preachers killed at least 24 people and wounded several others in an attack near a mosque in northeast Nigeria's Borno state, a military source and witness said on Monday.
The attackers arrived in cars late on Sunday and gathered people at a mosque in the remote village of Kwajafa, pretending to preach Islam. They then opened fire on them, witness Simeon Buba said.
The group's six-year insurgency, and President Goodluck Jonathan's failure to end it or protect civilians, were factors in the victory of opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari in last week's election.
The group fighting for an Islamic state has killed thousands and kidnapped hundreds, although a military operation against them by Nigeria and neighbours Chad, Cameroon and Niger in the past two months has wrested back much of the territory it controlled.
"People didn't know the Boko Haram men came for attack because they lied to our people that they came for preaching," said Buba in a telephone conversation.
"They opened fire on them and killed many people," he said, adding that houses were set on fire.
Some people were being treated for gunshot wounds and burns at a hospital in the Borno state town of Biu on Monday, a source there said.

A coach bus overturned on an expressway in southwest China’s Yunnan Province at around 6:00 p.m. on Monday, leaving seven people dead and 29 injured, local authority said.
The coach was heading to the provincial capital Kunming when it hit the guardrail and overturned at a segment of an expressway in Nanhua County.
Three passengers died at the scene and another four died on the way to hospital. All the 29 injured were treated in a local hospital.
Authorities are looking into the cause of the accident.

A 26-year-old man, Wisdom Okafor, has been killed after a scuffle with a car wash attendant, Monday Ekwekuba, in the Ojokoro area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metrolearnt that 38-year-old Ekwekuba, an indigene of Imo State, attacked the victim with a stick before chasing him into the path of a speeding vehicle after he saw him (Wisdom) in his girlfriend’s house.
Wisdom was reportedly crushed to death.
The incident happened on Clem Street in the Ijaiye Ojokoro area.
Our correspondent was told that Wisdom was a casual friend of Ekwekuba’s girlfriend, and was preparing for JAMB examination when he was killed.
The police from the Ojokoro division were said to have arrested the suspect, while the corpse of the deceased was taken to a mortuary in the area.
The victim’s elder brother, Celestine, toldPUNCH Metrothat the police had earlier arrested him accusing Wisdom of being involved in a fight.
He said, “On Sunday, March 22, around 10.30pm, the police came with a lady to my house and asked for my brother. They said he was involved in a fight and had injured a man named Monday (Ekwekuba), who had been hospitalised.
“I told them my brother went out to see a friend and had yet to return to the house. They said they would arrest me until I was able to produce my brother.
“I was detained and later they asked me to pay N10, 000 for Monday’s treatment, which I did.
“They then asked how I would produce my brother, and I decided to call him in their presence. His phone started ringing in the pocket of one of the policemen. The officer said the phone belonged to the man in the hospital, who had just died.”
Celestine said the police took him to the morgue where he identified the corpse of his brother.
He said that was when the suspect’s girlfriend opened up to the police that Wisdom had visited her on the day her boyfriend came, and accused her of dating him.
It was learnt that Ekwekuba began to quarrel with his girlfriend and was fighting with her when Wisdom intervened.
Celestine said, “The man then decided to go downstairs and wait for my brother. When my brother came down, he picked a stick and hit him on the head.
“As my brother ran, he pursued him into the mouth of a speeding vehicle and he was crushed to death.”
The suspect was said to have fled the area.
However, the police reportedly arrested his boss, who then produced him after some time.
Celestine appealed to the police to release his brother’s corpse, saying his job had been adversely affected by the incident.
“Our mother is late and our father is in the village in Enugu. He is sick, and I cannot inform him of the death of our brother because I don’t know what can happen to him. My job has been at a standstill and they should please release the corpse to us so I can go and bury him and move on,” he added.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the police wanted to obtain the autopsy report before releasing the corpse to the family.
The deceased’s younger brother, Daniel, while expressing his sadness urged the police to give the family justice.
He said, “It was after he mistakenly dialled her phone number and they spoke that she invited him to her apartment and that was how they met.
“He later saw her in a nylon company where he was working to raise money for his exams. She was also working there. She was older than my brother and there was no way they could be dating,” he added.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Kenneth Nwosu, when contacted, did not pick his call.
He had also yet to reply to a text message on the incident as of the time of filing this report.

HOODLUMS, who claimed to be celebrating the victory of Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in Osun State, on Wednesday night attacked the palace of the Alaagba of Aagba, Oba Rufus Ogunwole.
Aagba is in the Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State and Oba Ogunwole was suspected to be a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in the area.
The attackers vandalised the palace building and vehicles parked within the premises.
Palace sources told our correspondent that the hoodlums, operating under the name “Odo Oru”, literally meaning “night youths”, carted away a crown, beaded walking sticks and other paraphernalia of office of the Alaagba.
Ogunwole was also said to have escaped death by the whiskers.
The monarch told our correspondent on Thursday that his attackers were after his life because they believed that he was sympathetic to the PDP.
He said, “They have been terrorising people since. Some people in the town assembled the youths but they no longer have control over them again.
“They have spread their tentacles to other communities. They attacked the palace because they believe I am still a member of the PDP. I was a member of the PDP before I became the Alaagba but I don’t belong to any political party now.”
He confirmed that eight vehicles were vandalised while parts of the palace were also destroyed by the attackers.
Armed security personnel have however been deployed in the town.
Houses of some chiefs in the community, including the residence of Eesa of Aagba, Chief James Bamigbola, were also attacked and the chief’s car was also vandalised.
A resident of the town, who identified himself as Oluseye Aborisade, told our correspondent that the monarch was attacked because he was suspected to be a leader of the PDP.
Aborisade said, “The gang known as Odo Oru has been terrorising the community for quite some time now. They believe that since Buhari has won every member of the PDP must be dealt with.
“They said that they would kill and nothing would happen. Did we kill any of them when President Goodluck Jonathan won in 2011?”
However, another resident of the town, who pleaded not to be named, told our correspondent that the violence had nothing to do with politics. He said it was a chieftaincy crisis, which, he said, started since 2009.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of election in Osun State, Mr. Sam Okaula, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with our correspondent.
Okaula said that 10 suspects had been arrested in connection with the violence and that they would be charged to court if found culpable.
“I have information like that. Our men have arrested 10 suspects in connection with the crisis. Ten suspects are in our cell now. The CID is investigating the matter to see the roles they played in the crisis,” the CP said.

Crisis returned to Ekiti State on Wednesday as gunmen attacked the All Progressives Congress Secretariat and jubilant members of the party.
The APC members had just returned from the streets of Ado Ekiti where they had gone to celebrate the victory of the APC candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in the Saturday’s Presidential election.
The state Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, who addressed journalists in Ado Ekiti after the attack, said the gunmen came in three Hilux vans with Government House number plates with three men in Police uniform sitting in the front.
Accusing Governor Ayodele Fayose and the Police of complicity in the attack, he said the party had earlier got information that plan was being hatched by some top officials in the government house to prevent any celebration in the state.
He alleged that the gunmen were members of a killer gang sent to disrupt the APC victory party by the governor.
But Fayose said the attack was a self-sponsored attack by the APC to make it look like an attack from outside, urging the people to disregard the allegations.
Olatubosun wondered why the hoodlums attacked the Secretariat unchallenged in the presence of a detachment of police led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Ologede Police Station, Ado Ekiti, that had provided security for the victory party.
According to him, the gunmen brandishing guns, cutlasses and axes, rained bullets on the secretariat and destroyed no fewer than five cars parked at the secretariat.
Olatunbosun mentioned Femi Ogunleye (aka Akilapa), Basiru Ajagbe, Ayo Terrorist and Opeyemi Atiaro as the leaders of the attack.
The intensity of the attack, he said, forced party members and passers-by to scamper for safety.
“We had few members left when they came because some of our teeming members who held a peaceful victory procession were already leaving before they came. They shot at our secretariat.
“We were aware that they were coming but we never knew Governor Fayose could do anything funny because of the mood of the nation, though, we heard him boasting that he won’t allow anyone to mark the victory of Buhari in Ekiti State,” he said.
But the Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, while denying that Police supervised the attack said the timely response of his men led by the Area Commander saved the situation.
“We received information that there was an attack on APC secretariat and I deployed a team there led by Area Commander. They succeded in flushing out the miscreants.
“We are still making effort to arrest the miscreants. We have information on those who perpetrated the act. Our timely arrival scared away the miscreants. I am telling you categorically that my men will never be involved. That is a mere exaggeration. Ologede DPO was not there.”
Reacting, Fayose through his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, in a statement said he did not send anybody to attack the APC and had never done such a thing in the past.
The statement read, “The APC in their usual character have piled up strategies and as well more than 20 lies of various‎ degrees which they had planned to execute on daily basis to cause commotion in the state if General Buhari wins the election.
“One of such lies is this allegation of attack which in actual sense they planned and executed by themselves to make it look as if they were attacked by outsiders.
“The Governor does not operate or have any killer gang as they had alleged, rather, it is the APC’s killer gang which was set up and funded by Fayemi’s administration and headed by Deji Adesokan that has reappeared again in the state, and we are urging the police to be on their trail before they wreck havoc.
“This killer gang which killed not less than 10 people when Fayemi was in government, relocated outside the state after that ‎administration was ousted. Ekiti state has been peaceful since then. We are aware of their sinister plans to ‎ cause crisis in the state and they have started by invading the State House of Assembly today.”
It further said, “If the APC is sure of the attack, it should report that to the police. We are again informing Ekiti people of the evil plans by the APC to plunge the state into another crisis and stand up to defend this government, defend the mandate you have freely given to Ayo Fayose.
“We also appeal to the police and other arms of the security agencies to maintain law and order, protect lives and property and never allow any hoodlum to turn this state into another theatre of war.”
