The Peoples Democratic Party has said it will challenge the outcome of the March 28 presidential election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, through its Chairman and Chief Returning Officer, Prof. Attahiru Jega,on Wednesday morning,declared Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.)‎ of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the election.
The PDP through its agent at the National Collation Centre in Abujaon Wednesday,when the final result was declared, had refused to sign the result sheet despite its candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, having earlier conceded defeat.
‎The agent of the PDP, Bello Fadile, who was in attendance when parties were being called upon to sign the result sheet, told journalists shortly after the result was declared that the party was not satisfied with the outcome of the election and had decided to challenge it at the election tribunal.
“Whether I sign it (the result sheet) or I don’t sign it, does not make any difference. It doesn’t invalidate the result‎. When we go to court, then we can challenge the result,” Fadile said.
When asked to confirm if the PDP will challenge the result at the presidential election petitions tribunal, Fadile added, “Sure! The party petitioned. Don’t forget. So the party will follow through the petition. There are rules for this. The law is there.
“The result was declared on the 1st of April, I think. We will follow the due process. Like the president (Jonathan) said, ‘If you have any grievances, follow due process and the due process in this instance is to go to the tribunal.”

A staff the Independent National Electoral Commission was arrested on Monday at the commission’s office in Asaba for violating INEC’s rule on collation of results.
The INEC staff, who served as the electoral officer for Ndokwa East Local Government Area, was taken away by policemen in a van after he admitted to collating the results for the local government area against the rule of the commission.
The electoral officer came to the state collation centre at INEC, Asaba, to present the result of Ndokwa East without the collation officer for the local government, whose job it is to present the result.
When he was queried by the state Collation Officer, Prof. Bolaji Aluko, the electoral officer said the collation officer for the local government did not show up and due to pressure from party agents, he was forced to collate the results alone in the presence of party agents and security operatives.
The state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Anidi Ikowak, who was infuriated by the explanation, declared the results collated by the electoral officer invalid.
The REC said according to INEC’s rule, the electoral officer is not permitted to do the job of the collation officer and faulted the electoral officer for not calling him to report the situation.
Addressing the erring staff, Ikowak said, “There is division of labour in INEC’s activities. The electoral officer cannot stand in the place of the collation officer. If the collation officer did not show up you should have called me and another collation officer would have been nominated from the list of those we have trained. And replacement needs to be approved by me or even the chairman.
“I’m the REC, if this state collation officer did not come I would have reported to Abuja and another one will be sent. I can’t take up that role, I can only assist. So, the result you have collated is invalid.”
Aluko, who is the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Otuoke, asked the electoral officer to submit the result and write a report on the situation, but noted that it had not been officially accepted.
Immediately, the electoral officer was ushered into a police van and driven off.

Jonathan so far has about 186,000 votes.

The atmosphere in the maternity centre was serene. There was nothing suggesting the occurrence which took the reporter there. Nurses on duty were courteous but grew cautious and suspicious when it was obvious the reporter was not a patient. Why is he here?
The birth of a new born baby would normally elicit joy and excitement in people. It is more so when the mother has been longing for it without results for years. But, the reverse was the case in a maternity centre (name withheld) situated at Ifosan area of Ilesa, in Osun State where a woman recently gave birth to a baby with two horns on its head.
A tip had given Saturday Tribune photos of the strange baby, the arrival of which caused fear and trepidation among the nurses and the proprietress of the maternity centre. The tip also described the hospital and the geography of its area of operation.
The description was vivid and accurate enough for Saturday Tribune to locate the health centre without much difficulty. Here is the maternity centre where the baby with two horns was born. Then, there was a thick wall of silence. Nurses on duty would neither deny nor confirm the development. The reporter was tossed up and down and finally landed before the proprietress of the centre. She would not talk unless her identity and that of her hospital were protected. The reporter gave his words.
“It is true the baby was born,” she said, but added that the horror of the event compelled her to instruct her staff to keep sealed lips over the development, with a view to warding off public attention to the centre over the scary baby.
Speaking with Saturday Tribune during the visit on Thursday, the proprietress, (she is called matron by her staff) said the woman who gave birth to this deformed baby was “about 25 years old and she has been without a child for three years.”
She explained that “this woman lives in one of the farm settlements on the outskirt of Ilesa. She registered for antenatal service here. So, when she wanted to put to bed, her relatives rushed her here to deliver the baby.
“But we were shocked to the marrow when she eventually delivered the baby with two horns on the head after going into labour for some hours. By the time she was delivered of the baby, it was already dead and we had to separate it from the placenta.
“I have never seen such a terrible creature in my life. So, we helped to pack the dead baby and the placenta and handed them over to them before they left our premises. It was indeed a fearful development and we were saddened about it.
“This is not something we can celebrate. So, I ordered by nurses and other attendants to keep their mouth shut over the incident. But, I am very surprised how you people got to know about it and came here to inquire about it. I do not want anyone to make something unnecessary out of this or create problems for us here,” she stated.
She would not disclose the whereabouts of the woman who delivered the baby. “I cannot give you any details about her. Like I told you, she lives in one of the farm settlements on the outskirts of Ilesa and I don’t really know the area and I want you to leave me out of this matter,” she added.
The woman who froze when she was shown the photographs of the baby, however, confirmed its genuineness but asked how Saturday Tribune got them. A staff member of the clinic also showed Saturday Tribune her own photos of the baby taken with her phone.

A witness named Alexandria told WABC that she was going to have lunch at the sushi restaurant where the explosion may have happened, but decided to get ramen at a restaurant a few doors down. When the explosion happened, she said the glass in the ramen restaurant shook 'like it was rubber'.
She ran outside and saw several people climbing out of the building including a woman who was bleeding profusely from her face. She helped take that woman to the hospital with her boyfriend, and asked them what happened.
The couple said they were eating in the sushi restaurant when a man came in and asked to use the restroom. They say he 'didn't take enough time to use the restroom and then ran out' and that's when the restaurant exploded.
Alexandria said she tried to tell police her story, but was pushed back away from the scene.
Those with family and friends in area have taken to Twitter with worries for their loved ones.

Workers in Nigerian universities under the auspices of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over what they described an ‘obnoxious circular’ by the National Universities Commission.
The union therefore gave the Federal Government till Wednesday April 28, 2015, apparently one month within which it should address the issues or face industrial action in all the federal and state universities across the country.
The union said the circular was a mischief to obliterate the sanctity of its agreement with the Federal Government.
The position of SSANU is contained in a communiqué dispatched to journalists on Sunday in Abuja, after its National Executive Council meeting, held at Obudu Mountain Resort in Cross River State.
In the communiqué signed by its President, Samson Ugwoke, and Public Relations Officer, Mr. N.A.D. Aboribo, SSANU accused the NUC of unilaterally expunging through a circular the aspect of the agreement on university demonstration staff schools.
Besides, the union regretted the failure of the government to pay the outstanding arrears of the earned allowances and most especially the political statements being made by government functionaries about the payment, which has put serious pressure on the leadership of the union at the national and branch level.
SSANU also condemned the lackadaisical attitude of the Federal Government in implementing the 2009 agreement, despite its persistent call on the government and the Implementation Monitoring Committee for the full implementation and payment of the arrears of the earned allowance.
The communiqué read, “SSANU called for the full implementation and renegotiation of the 2009 agreement to forestall the disruption of the present smooth academic activities in the university system. We view with very grave concern, the actions of some government agencies in collaboration with certain selfish vice-chancellors to obliterate the sanctity of the 2009 FGN/university-based unions’ agreement by unilaterally expunging through a circular from the NUC the aspect of the agreement on university demonstration staff schools.
“SSANU-NEC-in-session hereby demands the immediate withdrawal of the obnoxious circular. For the avoidance of doubt, if by April 28, 2015, the circular has not been withdrawn by the NUC, the union will take labour action against the Federal Government. We frown on the overbearing attitude and unnecessary roles of the NIC in this regard.”
SSANU also warned the NUC to stop its undue meddling and interference in the affairs of the universities, so as not to overheat the Nigerian university system.
While demanding that the agreement should be implemented without further delay, the union criticized the continuous refusal of the Federal Government to renegotiate the said agreement “which is long overdue.”
The NEC-in-session warns Federal Government on the dangers of its insensitive stand on the matter, saying it was capable of completely eroding the relative peace in our universities.
“SSANU therefore urged the Federal Government to put machinery in place for the renegotiation of this agreement without any further delay.”
The union also warned against the victimization of its members and officers in various universities, and especially called for the reinstatement of 19 members of the union who were sacked at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko.
The union commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and its foreign allies for the recapture of most areas occupied by the Boko Haram terrorists in the north-eastern part of the country. SSANU called on the Federal Government to continue to adequately equip them and review Nigeria foreign policies with its neighbouring countries.
Speaking on the 2015 general election, the union condemned the hate speeches and unnecessary political killings currently being experienced in the build up to the 2015 general elections. The union urged politicians to place before Nigerians issue-based campaigns play the game by the rules and avoid violence.

With the presidential election just around the corner, our correspondents write that the battle, which is a straight one between President Goodluck Jonathan and General Muhammadu Buhari, may spring some surprises
As Nigerians, nay the world, wait for the March 28 presidential election and the 10 competing political parties putting finishing touches to their strategies, the actual contest, political watchers have submitted, is between the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party and Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) of the All Progressives Congress.
How would the scenario look like in the country’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, when the battle is fought, won and lost?
Abia
President Jonathan of the PDP is expected to win the presidential poll in Abia State as his party remains the dominant one there. The PDP’s strong base in the state coupled with the position of Governor Theodore Orji as the Coordinator of Jonathan’s Campaign Organisation in the South-East zone has further boosted Jonathan’s chances at the poll. Abia parades an army of people and accomplished Nigerians who are of the PDP family and they have been working assiduously to deliver their various localities to the President. Some of them include: Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Canada, Chief Ojo Maduekwe; former PDP National Chairman, Vincent Ogbulafor; former Senate President Adulphus Wabara; Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Gen. Ike Nwachukwu ( retd); among a host of others.
Jonathan’s marital tie with Abia State is also expected to boost his chances. The mother of the First Lady, Patience Jonathan, hailed from Abia and the state enjoys a very warm relationship with the First Family.
Abuja
Abuja, the seat of power, should ordinarily be the star on the crown of the eventual winner of the Presidential elections. However, the territory which some refer to as a city of civil servants is likely to be almost evenly split between Jonathan and Buhari.
Senator Philip Aduda (PDP) is expected to lead other public and political office holders to mobilise votes for the President because the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed; would be required to go back to Bauchi where he hails from to join the governor and the party’s national chairman, Adamu Mua’azu to campaign for the President. Aduda, however, has to contend with a former political opponent, Adamu Sidi-Ali, who apart from contesting for a Senate seat is also mobilising support for Buhari and the APC. That Abuja is where the President has lived for six years counts for a lot but the large number of northerners in the city is also a plus for Buhari. Verdict: It’s too close to call.
Adamawa
It is a state of political gladiators and all of them will want to make a point. The state boasts of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the APC; Buhari’s wife; former Chairman of the PDP, Bamanga Tukur; ex-EFCC Chairman, Nuhu Ribadu, among others.
It would have been an easy ride for the PDP, but for the Boko Haram menace that has claimed many lives.
The opinion of political analysts in the state is that despite the successes recorded in Mubi and many other towns, many indigenes are not impressed because they believe that the President launched the late war on the insurgents to score a political point.
Hence, it looks like a tight race between Buhari and Jonathan despite the fact that PDP won the state in 2011.
Akwa Ibom
Both the PDP and the APC are popular in Akwa Ibom State. Each of these two political parties exercises dominance in some sections of the state.
The people of Oro ethnic nationality (the largest ethnic group in Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District with five local government areas) are mainly against the PDP.
The people, who embrace APC hold that if Oro continues to remain in the PDP, the probability for them to produce a governor in the next 40 years will be slim.
Other areas with strong support APC base are Uruan; Ibeno; Ikot Abasi; Esit Eket; Abak Federal Constituency otherwise known as Abak Five; Itu; Ini; Ikono. The party has also encroached into areas like Ikot Ekpene; Essien Udim, where the PDP has strongholds.
However, Governor Godswill Akpabio who is an ardent loyalist of Jonathan is expected to deliver the state to PDP coupled with the South-East support for Jonathan.
Anambra
In 2011, President Jonathan of the PDP polled 1,145,169 million votes or 98.8 per cent of the total votes cast in Anambra State.
From the statistics, Anambra gave Jonathan the highest proportion of votes in the country. His closest rival was the Congress Progressives Congress candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, who polled 4,223 votes.
The situation on the ground shows that Jonathan still has an edge over Buhari and will very likely win the presidential election in the state.
The sentiments that worked well for Jonathan in 2011 are still very much around. But the party has lost a lot of followers, who though may not move over to vote Buhari, may remain indifferent.
The factors playing in favour of Jonathan include the incumbency factor. The party in power in the state, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, has also adopted Jonathan as its presidential candidate.

A sprawling Hamptons 'castle' belonging to the family of billionaire Hard Rock Cafe mogul Peter Morton was completely destroyed by fire on Wednesday.
The blaze broke out at the oceanfront East Hampton Village mansion in the early afternoon, with fire crews spending hours putting out the flames, which were fanned by strong winds.
While the cause of the fire remains unclear, crews began knocking what was left of the house down at 5pm.
The home, according to Page Six, is owned by Morton and his family, but, fortunately no one was home at the time.
The property was last appraised in 2008 for $21.5 million.

In this interview with Dr. Adedoyin Ogunyemi, a public health expert who leads an advocacy group in Nigeria committed to stopping Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), talks about it, the extent the practice is ravaging our country and how to tackle the problem and restore the dignity and respect of our girl children.

What is female genital mutilation (FGM)?
Female genitalmutilation is actually female circumcision which is a
harmful practice carried out in most African countries and the Middle
East – Yemen was recently included.
The practice involves total or partial removal of some or all the
female external Instruments or genital reproductive organs, for
cultural, non-medical reasons, causing injury to the female organs.
In the circumcision, the glands and clitoris, the vaginal tips are cut
off. It's no longer circumcision, but mutilated. We see the practice as violation of human rights of women.
They ought be free from
discrimination, coercion. It is violence considering the injury, both physical and psychological, beyond public health issue.
Explain the types of FGM?
There are various types of FGM. Type 1 is the removal or excision
(cutting off) of the prepuce, the glands and part of or all of the
clitoris – sensitive part of the vagina, the outer lips.

See photos The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have apprehended a man with 35.115 kilogramme of Cannabis sativa hidden inside sausage rolls trying to smuggle it to China.
The man, Friday Ogbonna, 33 was apprehended at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport during a screening of passengers on their way to China, the anti-narcotics agency revealed today.

In addition to Mr. Ogbonna, the security officials arrested one David Famolu, 34, and Joy Osamunyi, 26, who were on their way to Dubai with 4kg and 19.640kg of cannabis respectively.
“My friend in China gave me N100, 000 to take a bag to China. The last time I travelled to China, he assisted me,”said Mr. Ogbonna, a trader at the Onitsha main market.
“When he gave me the money to take the bag containing gala to China, I thought he was doing me a favour I never knew he was digging my grave. After my arrest, I feel bad and regret my action. I am married with a child.”
Mr Famolu a computer seller explained how he came into the criminal business.
“I bought the cannabis myself for N44, 000. I was introduced into drug trafficking by a friend who assisted me with my travel documents,”Mr. Famolu said.
