Staying registered with the CAC is not enough; your business also needs to remain compliant. Many business owners complete their CAC registration and assume that is the end of their obligation. However, registered businesses and companies are generally required to file annual returns with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) as applicable. Failing to keep your annual returns up to date can leave your business with an inactive or non-compliant status and may create problems when you need CAC documentation for contracts, grants, corporate banking, partnerships, due diligence, or other business opportunities. The difficult part is that many people only discover the problem when an important opportunity is already in front of them. Registering your business gives it legal recognition, but maintaining your CAC compliance helps keep that registration in good standing. Don’t wait until you urgently need your company documents before checking whether your annual returns are up to date. |
Registering your business with the CAC early can be more important than it seems. A business owner recently missed a grant requirement because, although he had operated his business for five years, his CAC registration was only completed this year. CAC registration cannot legitimately be backdated. Your official registration date remains the date the business was formally registered, regardless of how long you operated before registration. This matters because some grants, contracts, partnerships, and other opportunities require businesses to have been officially registered for a specific number of years—sometimes three, five, or even ten years. Delaying registration today could therefore affect opportunities that arise in the future. The best time to register your business was when you started it; the next best time is today. |
