This money was owed by the previous tenant who moved out 4 years ago. The landlord never told new tenants anything about any bill being owed. Are they now to pay for what they never used?

Dear Nairalanders,

This is currently the experience of a family since moving into their new apartment 4 years ago. For almost 2 months, they didn't have light because the previous tenants refused to pay EKEDC due to the crazy bills they had been getting. The bill owed stood at #184,000 and the Landlord never told them a thing about it before moving in. There has been several back and forth with EKEDC due to this and most times, they would go months without light. The Landlord was always aware of this and claimed they had taken the issue to EKEDC with no positive result.

The new tenants were told to switch to the new prepaid system so as to avoid the crazy bills being sent by EKEDC as they would only pay for what they use. Presently after the switch, they ran out charge and on wanting to recharge, they were told they couldn't until the precious bill owed by the old tenants was paid.

What do they need to do? Rent expires this month. Do they pay the outstanding bills with part od the rent?

The showdown was lit and the crowd was massive. From people getting on the queue to get their orders, to people getting good shots of Tequila. The music and the serene was top notch.
