Desperate fight for survival? A picture appears to show a man swallowed whole by a shark frantically trying to release himself by forcing his arm through the creature's gills and stabbing it in the head.
It's a photo that never fails to shock new visitors to an Australian pub. A man swallowed by a shark has managed to force his arm through the creature's gills and is desperately stabbing it.
Presumably still alive inside the shark's stomach, he is able to plunge the knife into the its head in a desperate fight for survival.
In fact the photo has proved to be quite stomach-churning for all who see it for the first time when they walk into the Metung Hotel, in the Gippsland region of Victoria. But all is not as it seems.
The unnamed fisherman did catch the shark and he did end up in its stomach. But first he made sure the shark was very dead before he gutted it and then crawled inside its body to prepare for a prank photo that would be taken by one of his friends.
The dramatic part came when he then pushed his tattooed arm out through the shark's gills and pretended to be fighting for his life by stabbing the killer fish in the head.
Locals, said radio host John Burns of Melbourne's 3AW, who was sent a copy of the photo, refer to the fisherman as the Shark Slayer.
"This fellow has decided as a jape to climb inside the shark with a knife, put his hand through the gills of the shark and pretended to stab it between the eyes,"Mr Burns told his listeners today.
He then went on to describe the reaction of one pair of visitors.
"An American couple have turned up at the Metung Hotel to see this photo (on the wall) and their immediate response from the wife was "Did he survive?" said Mr Burns.
The fisherman happened to be standing behind the couple at the time. Although his response is not known, the Americans might have had the shock of their lives if he'd said: "Yes, I did!"

Star actress Funke Akindele has finally broke her silence on her alleged failed marriage saga and she said she is heading to go to court to clear her name and the issues...
The news of her troubled marriage was first reported by The Nation, so Funke Akindele has forwarded an sms message to the media house. The message reads:
“I read in the newspaper yesterday that I am divorced. What proof do you have? And I am taking this to court because my marriage is intact. You guys are rumour mongers. Funke Akindele Oloyede.”
It was reported on Tuesday that the actress may have been separated from her husband, Kehinde Oloyede, son of former Iyaloja of Oshodi market.
This is after Kehinde Oloyede himself announced a “separation” via his facebook page on Monday. He said:
“It is with heavy heart that I am announcing the separation of me and my wife, Mrs Olufunke Akindele. We have both agreed to go our separate ways because of irreconcilable differences. We are still best of friends and we would forever remain good friends.”
The statement, which the actress’ husband has since deleted from his facebook wall, generated concerns among the star’s fans, who made the issue a major topic on the social media.
Attempts to reach Funke on Monday failed. Her elder sister, who doubles as her spokesperson, Mrs Ayo-Ola Muhammed, failed to make an official statement she promised when contacted because, according to reports, the actress asked that no statement be made on the issue.
From what OluFamous.Com gathered, Funke Akindele's husband may have deleted the “separation” post on his facebook page, due to pressure from friends and family members. She is said to have been crying since the incident, fearing criticisms by her fans and her clients’ reactions.
Funke Akindele, actor and producer and ambassador of several brands, including telecommunications giant, Globacom, got married to Oloyede 14 months ago in a grand ceremony held in Lagos.
Funke’s decision to marry the real estate business man, was severely criticised by many who wondered why she should get involved with a man that is already married, with children and "different woman".
