Fela Anikulapo Kuti, commonly known as Fela, was a Nigerian musician, composer, and political activist who is considered the pioneer of the music genre known as Afrobeat. Born in 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria, Fela blended traditional Nigerian music with elements of jazz, funk, and highlife to create a unique and powerful sound that became the voice of a generation. Fela’s music was not just about entertainment; it was a means of social and political commentary. He fearlessly addressed issues of corruption, government oppression, and social injustice in his lyrics, often criticizing the Nigerian government and advocating for the rights of the common people. Fela’s music was infused with infectious rhythms, energetic horn sections, and his distinctive baritone voice, which captivated audiences and inspired them to question the status quo. Fela’s influence on Afrobeat is immeasurable. He revolutionized the music scene by incorporating complex polyrhythms, extended song structures, and improvised solos into his compositions. His fusion of traditional African rhythms with Western music styles created a new and vibrant sound that resonated not only in Nigeria but also globally. Afrobeat went on to inspire numerous artists across the African continent and beyond, becoming a genre that combines social and political activism with infectious grooves. Today, every artist claim to be inspired by Fela. Everyone says they love Fela’s songs. ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT? |

A leading member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and spokesperson of the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign, Daniel Bwala, has said that the PDP will take over power from the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu six months after inauguration. The PDP and Atiku are challenging the declaration of Tinubu as the president-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission. Listed as 1st to 3rd respondents in the petition are INEC, Tinubu, and the APC. The Presidential Election Petition Court is to continue the pre-hearing of the petition by the PDP and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar on Thursday, May 18. While speaking to ARISE TV about the petition, Bwala was asked what he would say about the accusation by the APC that the PDP has the longest history of electoral malpractice in the country. Bwala, who was the spokesperson for Atiku presidential campaign council in the last general elections, said even though he could not entirely dismiss those accusations, PDP had tried to redeem itself by apologising to Nigerians and pledging to do better if given the chance to rule again. He said, “PDP has over the years admitted that they made so many mistakes. I remember Secondus one time when he became the chairman of the party taking a campaign across the country to tell Nigerians that PDP is sorry. Has APC ever said “We are sorry”? “This is a party that wants to make lies a statecraft. They announced that the president-elect was traveling on an official visit where he’ll meet with investors, where he’ll do this and that. How many days has he been away? We haven’t seen a picture of him alighting from a plane or investors receiving him.” About his optimism over the PDP’s chances of victory in court, he said that after Tinubu is inaugurated on May 29, he will be in office for only six or seven months before he would get sacked and the PDP would take over power. “When he (Tinubu) becomes president on May 29, he’ll have about six or seven months before he’ll be sacked and then we’ll come and take over the power,” he said. |
Obiageli Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to ‘swiftly’ hand over power to her. The former Minister who disclosed this via Twitter on Wednesday, described Buhari as an “ineffectual Commander-in-Chief of the Nigeria Armed Forces.” Information Nigeria reports that her comment stemmed from the outcry of the President’s supporters over his inability to secure the country and its citizens. Ezekwesili added that she welcomed Buhari’s supporters’ vote for her. “Let’s ask the ineffectual Commander-in-Chief of the Nigeria Armed Forces @MBuhari to swiftly hand over power to me so I can satisfy his supporters’ cry on his ignoble failure to secure the country, citizens and residents of Nigeria. I welcome their vote of confidence in me,” she tweeted. “Once I analytically surmised that demanding action on any governance issue from @MBuhari was equivalent to expecting the impossible, I stopped. We have a so-called Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces, who sorely degenerated the state of our country’s security. Ignoble legacy,” Ezekwesili stated. |
Controversial critic, Reno Omokri has attacked Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, Peter Obi for saying that APC should have brought Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as its candidate instead of President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. The former presidential aide said his submission was evident in the antecedents of Tinubu when he was Lagos state governor, as he built both human resources and infrastructural facilities and increased Lagos internally generated revenue. While he argued that Atiku Abubakar, the presidential flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party was the best candidate in the 2023 elections, Omokri said he preferred the former Lagos governor to Osinbajo and Obi. Obi had said while exchanging pleasantries with some guests at Dele Momodu’s 63rd birthday in London, that the All Progressives Congress would have succeeded in moving Nigeria forward if it had chosen Osinbajo as its candidate. He said in a viral video: “I am desperate to see Nigeria working, I can’t hide it. I even confronted them if you want it, why didn’t you bring Osinbajo so that we can have people who want to work for the country? “Nigeria needs a healthy person and someone like him working 24 hours. Let’s have the place working for everyone.” Reacting to this, Omokri said: “put Osinbajo and Obi together and multiply them by 10, and Tinubu is still better than them in managing men and resources. “Peter Obi is very wrong to say Osinbajo is better than Tinubu. You don’t have to like somebody before you say the truth about them.” He said the best Presidential candidate, in his opinion, is Atiku Abubakar, but that he is afraid he had to disagree with Peter Obi that Osinbajo is better than Tinubu. “Look at Nigeria in the last eight years. What was Osinbajo’s impact? The reason why Peter Obi lives in Lagos and not in Anambra, where he was Governor for eight years, is because Tinubu performed as Governor of Lagos. “As Governor, Tinubu built new cities from scratch, ports, rail infrastructure, roads, hospitals, industries, independent power stations, paid civil servants, and mentored men like Osinbajo, Fashola, Aregbesola, Fayemi, Akabueze and co, who are now movers and shakers. He also increased Lagos’ internally generated revenue by 360%. “In contrast, what did Osinbajo and Obi achieved while in power? Osinbajo and Buhari gave us two recessions, while Peter Obi’s singular boast is the beer factory, in which he had a personal investment, and saving the then equivalent of almost $400 million of Anambra money in a bank where he had significant interest in and was its former chairman. Every time that money yielded interest, Obi personally benefited in the millions of dollars,” he stated. “Tinubu may be a drug lord, and I will never have anything to do with such a vile person. However, put Osinbajo and Obi together and multiply them by 10, and Tinubu is still better than them in managing men and resources”, he added. |

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president-elect, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who flew the flag of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the February 25 presidential election, met for four hours in Paris, France, on Monday, TheCable can report. At the centre of the discussion, TheCable understands, was the potential involvement of Kwankwaso in the in-coming administration as Tinubu plans to form a “government of national unity” — which means giving certain positions to opposition parties. The meeting also discussed issues around the election of the legislative leaders ahead of the June 13 inauguration of the 10th national assembly. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has zoned the two top positions in both chambers but some of its members are kicking against the formula and threatening to go into an alliance with the opposition to torpedo the arrangement. While APC has 59 senators and 175 members of the houses of reps, NNPP has two and 19 respectively. A simple majority of 56 senators and 181 reps are needed to elect the top two leaders in the respective chambers. Tinubu’s representatives have also been meeting with key figures in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), TheCable confirmed. The Paris meeting between Tinubu and Kwankwaso started at 12.30pm and ended at 4.45pm, insiders told TheCable. Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of reps and presumptive chief of staff to the president-elect, attended the meeting while Abdulmumin Jibrin, an NNPP rep-elect and former leader of a Tinubu campaign organisation, accompanied Kwankwaso. Oluremi Tinubu, senator and wife of president-elect received Kwankwaso’s wife, Salamatu. TheCable learnt that Tinubu and Kwankwaso reminisced on their relationship dating back to the national assembly in 1992. Tinubu was a senator while Kwankwaso was deputy speaker in the house of reps. TheCable understands that Kwankwaso, in principle, agreed to join Tinubu’s government subject to consultations with the stakeholders on both sides. Tinubu is expected to brief Kashim Shettima, the vice-president elect, APC governors forum and other party leaders while Kwankwaso will do same with his party leadership. TheCable learnt that Tinubu expressed concern over the strained relations between Abdullahi Ganduje, outgoing governor of Kano state, and Kwankwaso, and promised to broker peace between them. Ganduje was deputy to Kwankwaso when he was governor of Kano from 2011 to 2015 but they have soon parted ways. Tinubu polled 8,797,726 votes to win the presidential election, beating PDP’s Atiku Abubakar by a margin of of two million. However, Kwankwaso polled 1.5 million which many analysts believe were votes that could have gone to Atiku if the former Kano governor had not defected from the PDP. |
