I patiently and diligently read everything and I must say, it is a fascinating read.

Personally I think Awo was planning to do something if Biafra seceded but something or someone persuaded him or pressured him to do the opposite.
Either way he still reneged on his promise.

WetinConsignMe:
No Nigerian politician living or dead has more controversies attached to them than the person of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

What are the basis of these controversies?
To what extent are they justified?

Let this be the definitive thread on Awo's controversies.
So, even if you've presented your arguments elsewhere, present them here again for the record.

POLITELY present your points. Try to be courteous and respectful or at least avoid personal attacks on anyone.
No bigoted tribal posts please.

Please remember, Awo is a hero to most Yorubas and like a god to some, so try to be respectful.

Here are Chief Awolowo's controversies in chronological order:

1) That he introduced tribal politics into Nigeria in 1951 by, overnight, convincing a staunch NCNC allied Ibadan party to switch allegiance to AG in other to prevent Zik from becoming first premier of the West.
As Unongo put it:
"Zik’s party produced a Zik premiership in Western Nigeria and in the night, Awolowo went round to convince the Yoruba that, ‘you are a tribe. Your tribe is called Yoruba. Zik’s tribe is called Igbo. Do not allow this to happen. Whether you like me or not, it is better to have a Yoruba man to rule over Yorubaland’. Unfortunately, I feel, this was the starting point of our problems."

2) That he tried to orchestrate the first coup in Nigeria in 1963. For this he was sentenced to 10 years hard labour by a Yoruba judge after a long trial. A co-conspirator, Enahoro, later escaped to Ghana and confessed they were indeed planning a coup.

3) That the January 1966 coup plotters intended to release him from jail and install him as prime minister.

4) That only Ojukwu could have released Awo from Calabar prison as Gowon never had authority in the East and was never in any position to order the release of Awo or any other prisoner in the East.

5) That Awo promised Ojukwu personally, and later said publicly, that the West would secede if Biafra seceded.

6) That he encouraged the starvation of Biafrans durring the war. That he made the statement: "Starvation is a legitimate weapon of war."

7) That he was the architect of the 20 pound policy after the war, which most Igbos considered cruel.

88) That he commited suicide by poison in 1987 after a co-conspirator gave Babangida a tape of them plotting a coup.
As Adebayo Adeyinka, a staunch Awoist, put it:
“Papa Awolowo was invited for a meeting with President Ibrahim Babangida who was then staying at Dodan Barracks which was the seat of power as at then...
He gave Papa some options and that was for him to be ready to face a court martial, be ready to go to a prison, or better still go on exile
At this stage Papa felt instead of allowing some ambitious khaki boy to mess him up he should just pack it in and call it a day, so Chief Awolowo decided to commit suicide so as to save himself from the ignominy of going to prison for the second time in his lifetime ."

9) That he was corrupt.

As Adeyinka put it (in trying to praise Awo);
“He was stupendously wealthy during his lifetime, infact there is no company at Oba Akran in Ikeja, Lagos, where he does not have at least a five percent equity. Dideolu Court in Ogba alone cannot be valued at less than N10 Billion, that was the place that he had in mind to be his Seat of power if he was elected as Nigeria’s President.
He owned Shonibare Estate but the man he was using as a front and who later went to prison over some issues which Awolowo himself was privy to eventually laid claim to the estate"
"“He got all of this wealth due to a great measure of goodwill and tax waivers he gave to investors whenever they come to establish their business.
Anytime you buy a bottle of Coca-Cola you are enriching the Awolowo Dynasty."
He listed these blue chip companies as places the Awolowo family have commercial interests just to mention just a few:
Dunlop Nigeria Plc ,Guinness Nigeria Plc, Neimeth Pharmaceutical Nigeria Plc ,May and Baker Nigeria Plc ,Vitafoam Nigeria Plc ,Wahum Nigeria Limited ,CAP Nigeria Plc , International Paints of West Africa [IPWA], Berger Paints Nigeria Plc ,Berec Nigeria Limited ,Kabelmetal, Nigeria Bottling Company Plc ,Leventis Nigera Plc ,West African Portland Cement Company,[Lafarge ],Wema Bank Nigeria Plc, Scoa Nigeria Plc ,CFAO Nigeria Plc, Cadbury Nigeria Plc ,Wemaboard Estates, Odu’A Group, Livestock Feeds Nigeria Plc , Nigerian Breweries Plc

The era of mumu political correctness is over, of recent we've seen the statue of Chief Awolowo commissioned, the acceptance of Lagos into Odua Group, and now the Yoruba Language Bill.

For those of you that'll convulse over this news accept my humble condolences, it appears that the Yorubas have taken over the 'No Man's Land'.
its a message to many land grabber to stay clear of Lagos. we the Yorubas are ready to make Lagos function for all. its a beacon of hope for all Yoruba state that if Lagos can work so are others

Thats anoda angle sef. Back den in skool,I know it cost 8naira(or a Lil bit higher,) to print a single 20 naira bill. I dnt know how much the figure is now. If to say e easy like dat, no country will be in debt.
USA did something similar, in 2001-2004, by printing so many dollars into the economy, which led to a geometric increase in money supply. It affected their housing sector, which led to a collapse in 2008.
Money can only be minted to augment the mutilated ones and maybe new denominations to increase circulation of it

Very funny question.. Even the naira sef, we cant just be printing it anyhow..
it would lead to inflation, the money no go get value. more money chasing fewer goods.

Corruption, ‘illegal’ appointments, anti-north allegation… six highlights of Ibe Kachikwu’s letter to President Buhari

Ibe Kachikwu, minister of state for petroleum resources, wrote a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, over the alleged insubordination of Maikanti Baru, group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

In the letter seen by TheCable, Kachikwu accused Baru of undermining his (Kachikwu’s) office and dragging the reputation of the NNPC into the mud.

He also said he was being sidelined based on allegations that he is corrupt, anti-north and conspiring in collusion with militants.

Below are six highlights of the petition:

‘UNDERMINING THE MINISTER’S OFFICE’

Kachikwu said since Baru’s assumption of office, he has failed to consult and carry him along in the activities of the corporation. He alleged that acts of misbehaviour by Baru were already hindering all the envisaged positive changes for the oil and gas sector.

The minister said he decided to bring the issues to the attention of the president after one year of tolerating “these disrespectful and humiliating conducts”. He said he would have preferred to personally discuss the issues with the president but he had not been able to secure an appointment despite many attempts.

Kachikwu appealed to Buhari to intervene and “save the NNPC and oil industry from collapse arising from above non-transparent practices and empower the board you inaugurated to do the needful”.

“That you save the office of the minister of state from further humiliation and disrespect by compelling all parastatals to submit to oversight regulatory mandate and proper supervision which I am supposed to manage on your behalf,” he wrote.

ANTI-NORTH ALLEGATION

The minister said he had been accused of working against the north and also influencing the appointments of some persons. He denied the allegations and described himself as a “completely detribalised Nigerian”.

“I have lived my formative years in the east, west, north and south-south parts of the country,” he wrote.

“All my appointments were generated with key inputs from all the COOs of the NNPC and were balanced and based strictly on skills, experience, drive and ethnic balancing for senior management position.

“I have never betrayed the trust you placed on me. I did not deploy any public financial resources to achieve the results in the Niger Delta.”

APPOINTMENTS WITHOUT DUE CONSULTATION

The minister said he was not consulted in most of the appointments made by Baru. He said he learnt about them on social media or through press releases. Kachikwu explained that on one occasion, he held a meeting with the GMD to raise concerns about the appointments and also wrote a letter to him, but that Baru ignored him by making some changes without his involvement.

He appealed to the president to suspend these appointments.

“I resumed work confronted by many publications of massive changes within NNPC. Like the previous reorganisations and repostings done since Mr Baru resumed as GMD, I was never given the opportunity before the announcements to discuss these appointments,” he wrote.

“This is so despite being the minister of state petroleum and chairman, NNPC board.

“The board of NNPC which you appointed and which has met every month since its inauguration, and which by the NNPC is meant to review these planned appointments and postings, was never briefed.

“Members of the board learnt of these appointments from the pages of social media and the press release of NNPC. The above is just one of the many occurrences of disrespectful experience with the GMD as your minister of state.”

In August, fifty-five management staff of the corporation were affected in a shake-up. The reshuffling raised dust, with Ohaneze Ndigbo, apex socio-cultural organisation of the Igbo, alleging that the north was clearly favoured while “the south-east totally ignored”.

ASSIGNMENT OF CONTRACTS WITHOUT DUE PROCESS

Kachikwu said against the rules, some major contracts were never reviewed or discussed with him or the board of NNPC. He listed some of the contracts as:

The crude Term contracts- value at over @$10bn
The DSDP contracts – value over $5bn
The AKK pipeline contract- value approximately $3bn
Various financing allocation funding contracts with the NOCs- value over $3bn
Various NPDC production service contracts- value at over $3bn-$4bn
“The legal and procedural requirement is that all contracts above $20m would need to be reviewed and approved by the board of NNPC Mr President, in over one year of Mr Baru’s tenure, no contract has been run through the board,” Kachikwu wrote.

“This is despite my diplomatic encouragement to Mr Baru to do so to avoid wrongfully painting you as a president who does not allow due process to thrive in the NNPC.”

‘CONSPIRING WITH MILITANTS’

In response to the above allegation, Kachikwu said: “nothing, your excellency, can be further from the truth”.

“I mention this because this will be the likely response you will receive to this attempt I am making to alert you on the state of affairs under the GMD’s leadership,” he wrote.

“I have done nothing during my time at the NNPC or the ministry that is corrupt or laced with any such intent. Anyone peddling any contrary information is resorting to cheap blackmail.”

REDEEMING THE IMAGE OF NNPC AND OIL INDUSTRY

Kachikwu said the public impression about the NNPC is that of corruption and in-transparency in its activities.

He appealed to the president to instruct the GMD to leave the NNPC to run as a proper institution and report out along due process lines to the board.

“Given the history of malpractice and the public perception of the NNPC as having a history of non-transparency, the NNPC Tenders Board (NTB) cannot be the final clearance authority for clearance it enters into,” he said.

“The open administration I introduced with your support in our year of pushing reforms, has been completely eroded. NNPC staff are afraid of contacting me for the fear of being punished, sidelined in appointments and targeted.

“The effect of the attitude of the GMD and the sidelining of the board is that there is a fear culture in NNPC.

“However, truth is that given global challenge in this sector, we must aggresively pursue out of the box ideas on rejuvenating this sector, getting the best yield and increasing our earnings from oil and gas.

“To do otherwise or to exempt any of the parastatals would be to emplace a stunted growth for the industry

Nollywood producers will still prefer to give Africa Magic their new movies because DSTV pays them better.

DSTV has poured millions of dollars in into the Nigerian Professional Football League without any profit yet the govt did not give them any tax relief. I see this development making the NFF very uncomfortable.

TV stations like Soundcity and Hip TV will still prefer the DSTV platform because they pay them better. Besides DSTV is partly responsible for the acceptance of Nigerian music across Africa.

Many people are addicted to the shows Telemundo and Zee World which TSTV does not have. Not everybody watches sport. That was the same assumption that killed HiTv.

I don't see DSTV collapsing. They're in so many countries although Nigeria is their second most important market. They have over 200 channels with something for everybody.

People don't know that subscription is actually cheaper in Nigeria than for instance Ghana. Cable TV is a luxury everywhere in the world. Sky is expensive in the UK too.

This competition will be good for the Nigerian consumer and is welcome but people please let's not get our hopes too high. TSTV has to earn credibility and our support.
Nigeria is there first most important Market.
Besides football viewing centers will have choice.

And let me tell u.
Dstv will have to try 2times to beat them n what makes u think they cant offer zee world n buy the content from those who actually own it.

You mean Hiptv n nollywood cannot sell right to them again as they are currently doimg with dstv?
