A nigerian friend of mine was puzzled as how to dial alphabetical phone number on a phone. I told him to call 1-800-THE-DIAL and he was like that's impossible. ![]() |
Delta007:Yeah, that is definitely a possibility, but why you suggest that? |
Gamine:The itinerary is not written in stone but the destination is, |
Thanks alot, a quick question, I'll probably be revisiting London before and I know a lot of Nigerians reside in london, but are the airfare prices cheaper there or in other European countries? |
Gamine:I will most likely visit my friend, but don't want to be limited to one area of the country. And I was also getting a wider range of suggestions. |
I'm a university student at the end of my studies and has always wanted to travel to West Africa. So, I will do so in the summer of 2010. I will start in Senegal and continue to south along the West African Coast(Skipping some areas of course). I initially considered traveling by Bus, but traveling through so many countries on bus wouldn't be the smartest thing in terms of safety(robbery, 100s of check points) and time wasted. So, I'll probably travel to 2-3 Countries in West Africa via plane and stay about 1 month. What I came here for is to ask some of you who currently live in Nigerian and outside to offer advice on where to go and visit. My best friend is Nigerian and lives in Abuja at the moment and has given me some advice(which was come stay with me lol). And some of my other Nigerian friends in the states who have not even been to Nigeria have made suggestions. I wanted a wider range advice on where I should travel(nightlife, slave ports, restaurants, etc)? Thanks in Advance for the suggestions. |
I always get a rash on my lips from eating the skin of mangoes. |
I doubt white folks/asian know the difference between African Americans and West Africans in terms of looks. So, it ridiculous to suggest such a thing. Perhaps once you start to talk then yeah. I thinking about travelling to Thailand and was reading on travelwiki that there is a color issue there, but it was mentioned that 'it is okay if you're a western black', but if from Africa then you might experience more racism. |
Oh, Yeah someone asked what broom jumping is. It comes from Ghana I read a while ago and is no longer a wedding tradition for some reason(colonialism). It symbolizes sweeping all you past troubles behind you and move on among other things. |
We have values and culture. Many parts of our culture come from West Africa(some from Nigeria) and others from an amalgam of African cultures. While other parts come from Europeans just as Nigerians celebrate Christmas, Dress in European clothing, and have Jubilees(British in origin) to celebrate their marriages. Our values in regards to religion(catching the holy ghost, african in origin) and family are one of the values I think show a sharp comparison between Euro-Americans and African Americans. Our music(Jazz,Blues, Gospel, RNB,hip-hop) is evidently of African origins and we revel in our music and the enjoyment and empowerment it brings and has brought to our people over the centuries. Our artistic style and expression is deeply rooted in Africa. Such concepts as 'Cool' are African in nature. African American english(or ebonics) has fundamental similarities to West African languages while other parts come from Europe. Our food is similar to many of the dishes found in West Africa. On holidays or celebrations my family eats Okra Gumbo, Yams, Peanut stew, rice, grits, watermelon, and so forth. Though, just like Nigerians we are a diverse group and our experiences in African American culture differs. The Gullah of South Carolina and Georgian Islands speak a creole containing words from West African languages and english just as many of you speak Nigerian pidgin. So, for being here for hundreds of years we maintain much of our West African culture and have added some elements from other cultures. In the end, both peoples need to learn something about the other's culture. In that way we will find parallels between the two we've never noticed. |
