Comedian and actor, Alibaba is currently being applauded for his interesting view on one of the things that keeps a marriage together. “It not religion that keeps the marriage together but the couples maturity, tolerance and personalities – Alibaba”.

When it comes to one of the things that poses a challenge when it comes to relationships, the issue of interfaith marriages tends to be one of them.


However, veteran Nigerian comedian Alibaba seems to counter this belief. According to him, religion isn’t what keeps a marriage together.

President Muhammadu Buhari has intensified his fight against corruption with a new executive order he signed on Thursday, July 5, which targets the assets acquired by politicians through proceeds of corruption. “FG goes after assets of 11 ex-governors, 10 ex-ministers, 135 others”.

Abu Khattala sentenced to 22 years in US prison

A Libyan national, Ahmed Abu Khattala, convicted in the deadly 2012 Benghazi attacks that killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans was sentenced to 22 years in prison Wednesday by a federal judge in Washington. “Abu Khattala sentenced to 22 years in US prison”.

A jury in November acquitted Ahmed Abu Khattala, 47, of murder and attempted murder in the overnight attacks that began Sept. 11, 2012, on a U.S. diplomatic mission and nearby CIA post. But he was convicted on charges including conspiracy and providing material support to terrorists, and it was the extent of Abu Khattala’s role as ringleader that U.S. District Judge Christopher R. “Casey” Cooper considered in sentencing him.

Legal analysts said the ability of the government to incapacitate Abu Khattala through a life sentence or its practical equivalent would influence decisions whether to seek civilian prosecutions in similar cases in the future. Prosecutors had sought a life sentence; the defense sought 15 years. While some observers saw Cooper’s judgment as a setback for prosecutors, he cast it otherwise.

“Even if you did not pour the gasoline or light the match, the evidence showed you were aware of the attack, and once the gates were breached, the likelihood someone would die was extremely high. This was not guilt by association,” Cooper told Abu Khattala. “This case stands as an exemplar for the principle that a defendant accused of international terrorism can get a fair trial in the U.S. criminal justice system.”

Federal prosecutors said Abu Khattala helped mastermind a terrorist strike abroad that resulted in the deaths of ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others and that he deserved the maximum punishment.

“This fact alone, the first killing of a U.S. ambassador while in the performance of his duties in nearly 40 years, makes this case a truly singular event and warrants imposition of the maximum sentence permissible under the law,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael C. DiLorenzo wrote in a sentencing recommendation by prosecutors.

The attacks also killed State Department employee Sean Smith – who died with Stevens in a fire at a U.S. mission residence – and CIA contractors Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, who died in a mortar attack as the assault shifted to a CIA annex in Benghazi.

A poor blackout yesterday hit about 8 provinces in Zambia at around 16:15 hours affecting business in industrial areas especially on the Copperbelt. “Countrywide Power Outage Riles SMEs”.

Small Medium Entrepreneur Moses Mpundu complained that delay to restore power which lasted for over three hours affected business.

He has since appealed to Zesco Limited to always notify customers whenever there are challenges being experienced in the supply of Power.

“In the middle of welding power just cut and I thought it was normal like it happens mostly, but shortly I started receiving calls that the power outage had affected a lot of areas, well business was affected yes because my work here entirely depends on electricity and I do not have a power generator as an alternative, so I was really disturbed just like many of my friends,” Mpundu said.

And when contacted, ZESCO Limited Public Relations Manager Hazel Zulu said the power outage which affected almost the whole country was due to a fault at the Leopards hill substation in Lusaka.

She said preliminary investigations revealed that the outage affected parts of Lusaka as well as Central, Eastern, Northern, North Western, Luapula, Muchinga and Copperbelt provinces.

Zulu said Southern and Western Provinces remained on supply.



She said power was however restored in Lusaka by 16:24 hours, while the rest of the affected provinces around 19:00hrs.

Libyas oil must remain under recognized NOC
The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres voiced concern at developments in Libya’s oil crescent on Wednesday, calling for de-escalation and the return of oil resources to recognized authorities, his spokesman said in a statement. “Libyas oil must remain under recognized NOC”.

“The Secretary-General recalls, as stipulated in Security Council resolution 2259 (2015), the need for unity of Libyan institutions and the exclusive right of the National Oil Corporation to export the country’s oil,” the statement said on Wednesday.

“He calls for de-escalation and for the return of all natural resources, their production and their revenues to the control of the recognized Libyan authorities.” The statement reads.

Earlier in the day, the United States, France, Britain and Italy said they were deeply concerned by an announcement that east Libyan oil fields and ports would be handed over to a parallel National Oil Corporation (NOC) based in Libya’s east.

Guterres reiterated his support for his envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, who is spearheading international efforts to stabilize and reunify the North African country after years of turmoil following a 2011 uprising....

Red sweet pepper 1 pc.

Small chili pepper 1 pc.
Small onion 1 pc.
Garlic 3 gloves
A large handful of basil leaves
3 tablespoons of soy sauce
1 chicken egg

Recipe:
Chop the sweet pepper into thin strips. Mushrooms, and onions are chopped on thin slices. Finely chop the garlic and chili.

In a frying pan, warm up the vegetable oil and put garlic and pepper into it.
Add the sliced vegetables and fry until half cooked.

Pure the rice into the frying pan and mix thoroughly. Put one egg in and stir it well. Then add the soy sauce to the rice and fry, stirring, until the vegetables are ready. Finely cut the basil and add to the pan.

Warm it for 1 minute and turn it off.

Obasanjo reconciles with Afenifere leaders
Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, erstwhile Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, and chieftains of the Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, who are some of his major critics, met in Lagos, yesterday, to kick-start a reconciliation process and forge a common front ahead of the 2019 general elections. “Obasanjo reconciles with Afenifere leaders”.

Obasanjo, who was at Chief George’s residence in Ikoyi before 9am, commiserated with the PDP chieftain over the recent death of his son, Dipo George, discussed national issues as well as, matters concerning the South West region behind close-door.

The former president who was accompanied by Chief Abraham Akanle; Mr. Joju Fadairo; Dr. Femi Majekodunmi; Dr. Gbolade Oshinowo; Kenny Martins, and Otunba Oyewole Fasawe, arrived at the Lekki Phase One residence of Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, where he also entered into a closed-door meeting with former Nigerian envoy to The Netherlands, Dr. (Mrs) Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu; Pastor Tunde Bakare; Dr. Amos Akingba; Mr. Supo Shonibare; Senator Femi Okunrounmu; Prof Akin Mabogunje, Prof Banji Akintoye; Mr. Yinka Odumakin, former governor of Ogun State and Director-General, Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko, and others to iron out critical issues about the country.

Although, Obasanjo refused to engage the media on the purpose of his visit, his host, Chief Adebanjo, however said the gathering was about the nation.

The Afenifere leader said the meeting was aimed at forging a common front among stakeholders in the region, and also to ensure unity and oneness of purpose on how to save the country from further drifting.

Adebanjo, who said the country must move forward, stressed that all attempts to establish dictatorship must be opposed, and there must be unity to destroy mediocrity and dictatorship.

While he did not disclose whether Afenifere tried to convince` Obasanjo to change his anti restructuring posture, it was gathered that the subject was part of the issues discussed.

The Guardian also reliably gathered that some of the major issues discussed at the meeting were the 2019 general elections; the spate of killings across the country and the rate at which young Nigerians are desperately running away from the country in search of greener pastures abroad.

Fayose vows to defeat federal might win election for party
Governor Ayodele Fayose has vowed to defeat the federal might of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to win the poll.The governor, who made the declaration at the 23rd Convocation of Ekiti State University (EKSU) in Ado-Ekiti, which he attended as visitor, explained that he had succeeded in giving Ekiti the party’s candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, who is a scholar.

Also, Fayose, who yesterday congratulated the Adams Oshiomhole-led APC, urged the presidency to be prepared for defeat.The governor, who stated this through his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, said the defeat would be a shocker to the presidency.He spoke in reaction to the quit notice given by the presidency to his party, during the APC’s national convention in Abuja at the weekend.

Meanwhile, a group loyal to the Director General of the Kayode Fayemi campaign organisation, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, has launched an aggressive evangelism campaign to mosques and churches.The group, under the aegis of MOB Progressive Youth Vanguard (MPYV), said it took the strategic step to boost the APC’s campaigns.

Led by its Coordinator, Ahmed Salami and Director of Operations, Isiaka Adedipe, they campaigned in some communities in the area, including Odo-Iro, a farmstead in Iyin Ekiti.
Adedipe said the group embarked on the campaign to fill the vacuum left by their principal, Bamidele.He added that the strategy was aimed at drawing the attention of Ekiti people to the evil inherent in allowing Fayose to plant his successor.According to him the independent-minded position of the Ekiti people led to the Kiriji War of 1877 and 1886, which it fought with the Ajeles from Ibadan in Oyo State.

15-year-old Nigerian rapper reportedly killed in London
Jordan Gbolade Jaiyeola, a 15-year-old teenage boy from East London had gone to celebrate with a friend on his 16th birthday but little did he know it would be the end of his life. He was reportedly stabbed to death after up to 100 youths mobbed the event in Romford, east London on the night of Saturday, June 23. “15-year-old Nigerian rapper reportedly killed in London”.

Jordan Douherty as he was locally known, was knifed to death after a large group of youths were turned away from the party because the venue was at full capacity.

Three teenagers were arrested following the stabbing in Romford, East London which would be the 51st fatal stabbing in the capital this year. They were later taken to separate police station for proper interrogation. A forensic cordon remained in pace at the scene as detectives quizzed the three murder suspects.

An eyewitness identified as Conor Rufus, had this to say: “Some people were running toward the body, some people were running away, there were cars coming and picking people up. It was all kicking off. There was all this screaming.”

A teenage witness, who gave her name only as Ellie, added: “There were two or three boys screaming ‘he’s not moving’, ‘he’s dead’. There were paramedics doing shocks and CPR on him for quite a while.After, he was just laying there with a white sheet over him, it was covered in blood.”...

Obasanjo least worthy of Nigerias ex-leaders —Soyinka
Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is the least worthy of former Heads of State to champion the political recovery process of the nation. “Obasanjo least worthy of Nigerias ex-leaders”.

He said by doing so, Obasanjo has “crossed the red line.”

Soyinka stated this in Abuja at a Gala Dinner and Award Night hosted by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture as part of programmes of the 67th World Congress of the International Press Institute (IPI).

Soyinka, a Guest of Honour at the dinner, described Obasanjo as a “hypocrite.”

He said he would soon launch a book where he articulated his claims and also made a call on the need for the younger generation to take over the reins of the country.

“That publication is coming out simply because I will like to see new blood in government in this nation.

“The sea is our life; it has been handed over to us by our ancestors. We live on its produce and make a living from it as well,” a thirty-four-old lobster picker and fish monger, Bernice Bebley, says. “Sustaining Ghana Fisheries And Coastal Resources”.

Bernice’s family lives within the Kokrobite community located a few miles away from the Densu estuary where her family, like other community members, ply their trade of fishing and picking of oysters.

“I was born here and I grew up seeing my father and mother doing this business to take care of us. So now, I also do this as a living to take care of my family,” she adds.

Bernice, however, states things have changed over the years with the landing of fish after fishermen expedition on the sea and processing of the catch before it gets to the last consumer.

“They come with very little fish and their sizes are also small, so we are not able to make any profit from their sale. We are managing with what we have but it is not enough,” Bernice indicates.

She says lack of proper processing facility and poor storage area also contribute to the poor socio-economic impact of fishing on fishermen and fishmongers.

“When they don’t come with a big catch we complain but when they do, we have a big problem because we do not have a proper place to store the fish or oyster and also process them for the market,” she reveals....
