PROLOGUE:

The boy sat in silence, staring blankly at the disinterested looking public defender. The lawyer, Obi Thomas, seemed like he had somewhere else to be, but like most over worked state government lawyers, he had an obligation to fulfil.
“You can appeal. That would take years. But the evidence against you is too much”, Thomas intoned.
The boy looked away. He seemed lost.
“Also there’s the issue of your confession.”
The words echoed around the holding cell. The boy seemed not to care. He stared down at his handcuffed wrists. He was resigned to fate, quietly accepting his punishment. It had been the longest five years of his life. His will to survive, to live, was gone. In his heart he had accepted punishment for the crimes he had committed…
“Maybe on appeal”, Thomas continued, “we could get the court to strike out the death penalty.”
Death penalty! The words jolted the boy. For once there was a flicker of fear in his eyes. Death. The ultimate punishment. He was only 22 and he was going to die, fade into nothingness.
“But I’m afraid it doesn’t look good”, Thomas concluded.
The boy was no more listening. He was lost in thought, taken back to the past a little over 5 years ago; how it all began; how his life changed forever; how an act of kindness became a curse to him…
