President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday told a gathering of the Peoples Democratic Party leaders in the Presidential Villa, Abuja that he hardly gets what he looks forward to in life. Jonathan, who boasted that no party would defeat the PDP during the 2015 polls said sometimes, things that he did not think about are the ones he gets. The President spoke while hosting members of the Presidential Declaration Committee led by a former Minister of Defence, Dr. Haliru Bello, to a luncheon. The committee which he formally dissolved during the luncheon was the brains behind his formal declaration on November 11 in Abuja. Jonathan said, “In my own life, the things I look for I hardly get. It’s what I don’t even think about that I get sometimes. I believe most of you will smile. But collectively, first and foremost, let us unite the party and work together for our collective victory.” He advised PDP’s aspirants at all levels not to see their aspirations as a do-or-die affair because the world does not begin or end with the offices they are aspiring for. The President said even if somebody blocked them from getting to the office, God might be preparing something better for them. Jonathan disclosed that he was taking note of happenings in some states ahead of the elections and would compensate some aspirants. He said, “Let me use this unique opportunity to plead with all of us who are aspiring for electoral offices that the world does not begin and end with the office you are looking for. “Sometimes, you would be looking for an office, you may not be able to get it for one reason or the other. Let us say somebody blocked you, so be it, let somebody block you. “But if God wants something better for you, even after that blocking, you will get something else. “I plead with all of us that we should not play the do-or-die, except I get it, let the party sink. We are taking inventory of all what is happening in all the states and I promise that we will try and use as many people as possible. “There are challenges in some states. People may deliberately block you. You may even be the best candidate in that particular constituency, but let us move ahead.” Jonathan also boasted that he had yet to see any party that would beat the PDP in the elections. He said while opposition parties would continue to “make noise,” they cannot beat the PDP, which according to him, does things differently. The President added, “I’m yet to see those who can beat the PDP. They will continue to make the noise but they cannot beat us, because the gap between PDP and others is very wide. “The way we do things and the way they do things are very different; the way we talk and the way they talk are very different; the way we reason and the way they reason are very different. “Our commitment to transform this country and their thinking about Nigeria are very different. And I promise you my party men and women and indeed all Nigerians that with your support, collectively we must move this country to where we want it to be. “Every day, every week and every month, we must add something; we must change and continue to change.” Jonathan also thanked all party faithful for their support before his declaration, admitting that there had never been a time in the nation’s political history that there had been a lot of opposition coming up every day. He said but for their support, his administration could not have achieved the little it had done. Jonathan said with his endorsement by all organs of the party, he had become “a privileged aspirant.” Despite the privilege however, Jonathan admitted that it was only after the party’s national convention that he could be referred to as a candidate. www.punchng.com/news/i-hardly-get-what-i-want-in-life-says-jonathan/ |

The Chris Giwa-led faction of the Nigeria Football Federation has overturned the decision of the body earlier taken by the opposing faction of Amaju Pinnick to reinstate Stephen Keshi as the Super Eagles coach. The Amaju-led faction replaced Keshi with Amodu Shaibu a fortnight ago after leading the Super Eagles to a 3-1 victory over Sudan in Abuja. The win was the team’s first in four matches in the qualifying series for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. The Giwa faction took over the NFF following Thursday’s ruling by a Jos Federal High Court, which ordered the return of the status quo in the NFF before the September 30 election that brought in the Amaju-led board in Warri. A part of the communique released on Friday by the Giwa-led board reads, “The NFF board reviewed and feels so strongly to sustain the out-of-contract assignment given to the technical crew of the Super Eagles led by Stephen Keshi at a very critical moment like this. Nigerians want the national team to play well, win and a pride to them.” The board also dissolved all committees set up by the Amaju group and constituted new ones to manage the nation’s football. Giwa told Sunday PUNCH on the telephone on Saturday that he would have no problem bringing Keshi back to manage the Super Eagles despite the coach saying he was prepared to move on after the NFF failed to renew his contract. “I don’t have problem bringing Keshi back; he has not told me he was not interested. I’ve spoken with him and there are positive signs he is ready to lead the team to success,” Giwa said. “I’ve never met Keshi before but I cannot agree with the idea of replacing the coach at a time we have crucial matches to play and qualify for the Nations Cup. “Inasmuch as I don’t have anything against Amodu, I don’t think it is the right time to bring him on board. Amodu has not coached any team in that capacity for a long time, and this is a crucial time when we need to be on top of everything.” The Amaju group, however, said it was not losing sleep over the activities of the Giwa faction. The group confirmed on Saturday it has filed a Stay of Execution at the Federal High Court, Jos Judicial Division over the court’s ruling of Thursday. The hearing of the case Stay of Execution comes up on Wednesday. “We’re not losing sleep over this, we’ll get what we want from the court because we’ve not done anything wrong by conducting the NFF elections,” a member of the Amaju-led board said. www.punchng.com/news/nff-crisis-giwa-resumes-recalls-keshi/ |
The confrontation between the Ekiti Governor, Ayodele Fayose, and the State House of Assembly is gathering momentum. The Ekiti State Government on Tuesday sealed off four filling stations in Ado-Ekiti including T. Five Integrated Service Filling Station belonging to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Dr. Adewale Omirin. According to a statement in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ayodele Fayose, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, the step was taken to prevent unimaginable fire accident with attendant fatalities. “The owners of the affected petrol stations are to report to the Ministry of Housing, Physical Planning and Urban Development with letters of approval,” the statement said. Reacting to the closure on Wednesday, the Speaker alleged that the Governor ordered the closure in order to intimidate and coerce him. Omirin, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress, and Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party are believed to be at loggerheads. The Speaker in a statement by his Special Adviser (Media) Wole Olujobi, vowed not to “buckle under undue political pressure to abandon his party for the Peoples Democratic Party for selfish and pecuniary motives.” Omirin claimed he fulfilled all necessary environmental laws in the location of the filling station and got necessary approval, wondering why the governor would start victimising those who do not share his political belief. The statement quoted the Speaker as saying that another Assembly member, Joseph Dele Olugbemi, had told him two days after Fayose’s inauguration that he (the governor) had made up his mind to close his filling station over refusal to join PDP. Olugbemi was among the six APC members that defected to PDP on the day of the inauguration. Omirin had earlier promised the governor that the House of Assembly would work with him in the interest of Ekiti people, to deliver dividends of democracy. “I called the governor to confirm what the honourable member told me about the plan to close my filling station. The governor denied any of such plan, swearing that he would not victimise any opponent. “But only yesterday the governor ordered the closure of the filling station, citing environmental factor,” the Speaker explained. Omirin said he had a background of political fidelity anchored on progressive democratic practice and so would not abandon principle in pursuit of selfish agenda diametrically opposed to the ethos of his political belief. According to him, the present atmosphere in the state does not call for high-handedness and persecution against perceived opponents, but a collective pursuit of common goals to deliver good governance to Ekiti people. He warned that attacks on the opponents, particularly the lawmakers, will only smear the relationship between the Executive and Legislature. But Fayose’s media aide denied that the decision to seal off the Speaker’s filling station and others had any political undertone. In a telephone chat with our correspondent, Adelusi maintained that, “Those filling stations sealed off by the Ministry of Physical and Urban Planning were because they contravened environmental laws. “They are sited within residential areas. They are not supposed to be within the residential areas. “They are not the only filling stations in the state capital. If they didn’t comply with the environmental laws, the law should take its course. It has no political undertone. “Four filling stations were sealed off but it is an ongoing thing. The exercise will take place through out the state. It is to sanitise the state and prevent fire outbreak.” Meanwhile, the Governor has approved the appointment of Mr. Samuel Adeyemi ( Shakila) as the Chairman, Ekiti State Petroleum Products Consumer Protection Agency. The appointment takes immediate effect. In another development, Fayose will Thursday swear in Justice Emmanuel Omotoso as judge of the Ekiti State High Court. www.punchng.com/news/fayose-seals-ekiti-speakers-filling-station/ |
A Bill for an Act to abolish and prohibit dichotomy and discrimination between University’s degrees and the Higher National Diploma in the same profession and field, scaled the second reading on the floor of theSsenate on Wednesday. The bill, sponsored by the member representing Ondo Central Senatorial District, Ayo Akinyelure, specifically seeks to end the ongoing controversy over wage disparity and gross discrimination against HND holders in the public and private sectors. He said, “The aftermath of continuing injustices, disparity and discrimination meted to products of polytechnics in Nigeria is threatening to derail the nation’s core policy thrust of evolving a technological and scientifically based, self-reliant society in the nearest future. “As I speak, thousands of would-be polytechnic and technology students are contemplating or have decided to opt for university education, because of perceived and real discrimination against HND graduates. “If this contemplation occurs, there is bound to be a vacuum created in our labour market in this regard, and dire consequences are bound to follow this trend. “Over the years, several entreaties have been put forth to the Federal Civil Service authorities to put a stop to certain glaring wage disparities and discrimination against the HND holders, and all these have been to no avail.” He said to make matters worse, certain federal parastatals were known to openly discriminate against HND holders to the extent of limiting their progress within the hierarchy of such government bodies. “To all intents and purposes, a government employment policy that places degree holders ahead of HND holders without recourse to skill and ability of the HND holder thereof, does more harm than good to the nation’s development,” he added. Akinyelure, who is also the Chairman, Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, further argued that empirical evidence had shown that polytechnic graduates of accountancy, engineering and some other professional curses are better on the job than their university counterparts. Senators, who contributed to the debate, noted that the issue of dichotomy between the two certificates could only be addressed if the curriculum of polytechnics was improved upon and ensure that it was rich enough to award degrees. www.punchng.com/news/degreehnd-dichotomy-bill-passes-second-reading-in-senate/ |

Ekiti Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Saturday sacked all the Caretaker Chairmen of the 16 Local Government Areas and the 19 newly created Local Council Development Areas in the state. Also dissolved are all boards of government corporations, agencies and parastatals constituted by the immediate past Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi. Fayose, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, directed all the caretaker chairmen to immediately hand over to the Director of Administration of their respective council. “The dissolution takes immediate effect. “All the local government and local council development areas’ caretaker chairmen are to hand over to the Directors of Administration of the existing local government areas. “The Directors of Administration are to take inventory of the property handed over to them,” the statement read. Caretaker chairmen were in control of the 16 constitutionally recognised LGAs during the administration of Fayemi. Caretaker committees were also appointed for the 19 LCDAs inaugurated shortly after the June 21 governorship election. An attempt by the Fayemi to hold council election in the 16 councils on February 4, 2011, was stopped by the state High Court, following a suit filed by the PDP in the state that some of the members of the State Independent Electoral Commission were members of the then ruling party, APC. Fayemi, who had promised to hold council election before the end of the year was defeated by Fayose in the June 21 election. Fayose had his inaugural speech on Thursday vowed not to fund the LCDAs with the Federal Allocations for the 16 councils listed in the 1999 Constitution. He said “Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) clearly spells the authorities and procedures for the creation of local government. “The sudden and shoddy balkanisation of the existing 16 local government areas by the immediate past administration under the guise of creating local council development areas is being challenged in the court of law. “Our party considers the hurried creation of the 19 LCDAs, after incumbent (Fayemi) lost the June election, as gratuitous afterthought of a bad loser. It smacks of political subterfuge masterminded in utmost bad faith. “But at the moment, the matter is sub judice, and as law abiding citizens, our government will not do anything that will render the decision of the court nugatory. “However, pending the pronouncement of the court, our administration shall be guided by the provisions of Section 3, Part 1, First Schedule of 1999 Constitution on the list of local governments in Nigeria in the allocation of resources to that tier of government.” Meanwhile, Fayose, has yet to move into the new Government House, Oke Ayoba, Ado-Ekiti, just completed by the immediate past Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi. www.punchng.com/news/fayose-sacks-ekiti-lg-chairmen-boards-shuns-government-house/ |
THE Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu on Monday said there had been no formal request from the United States for Nigeria’s assistance in combating the Ebola Virus disease. “As at Friday really, there was no formal request by the United States, for assistance in the containment of Ebola Virus Disease”, the minister, who spoke through his Special Assistant (Media and Communications), Mr. Dan Nwomeh, said during an enquiry by our correspondent on Monday in Abuja. The US had last week recorded its first case of EVD in circumstances similar to the importation of the virus to Nigeria by the Liberian-born American Diplomat, late Mr. Patrick Sawyer. Thomas Duncan, the first person to have been diagnosed with EVD in the US, is said to be fighting for his life in a hospital in Dallas. Based on the feat recorded by the Federal Government in the containment of EVD in Lagos and Port Harcourt, speculations had been rife that the President Barak Obama’s administration would seek the intervention of Nigeria. The EVD case in US was recorded in Dallas, and was from a patient who had reportedly flown in from Liberia. A statement from the Director of Centre for Disease Control and the Texas Health Department, Dr. Tom Frieden, said the patient had been hospitalised while contact tracing had commenced. www.punchng.com/news/ebola-us-yet-to-request-for-assistance/ |

There is something puzzling about the character of Mallam Nasir el-Rufai that will confound even the most veteran of personality profiler. Who is the man, el-Rufai–a patriotic Nigerian or a rabble-rouser? From being a top apparatchik in the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to a self-styled social crusader and an unrelenting critic of the Jonathan administration, the man whose aliases range from the “Giant”, to “Demolition man” and “Mr Controversy” has defied all explanations. His fierce and merciless criticisms of President Goodluck Jonathan have made him the most “hated” Nigerian alive by the Jonathan’s Presidency. Not that the President has been blameless though; his style of administration and a catalogue of embarrassing gaffes by his team have often exposed them to derisive shellacking by detractors. But el-Rufai seems to be in a class of his own. Something tells me we have yet to see the best or worst of the “certified ruffler of feathers” (his own words) How has el-Rufai metamorphosed from his position at the commanding heights of decision making to the murky waters of being a government critic? Those who know the political trajectory of el-Rufai know that he has always treaded the minefield of controversy. Indeed, he was the enfant terrible of the Obasanjo administration. Now, it appears he has found his calling; for no single individual has rattled the President than Nasir el-Rufai. Since he began his “one man riot-squad” against the Jonathan administration, his vicious criticism of the President and his policies has been unmatched. In spite of personal attacks, el-Rufai has refused to back down on his frequent stinging jibes at the administration. Really, I get the impression that el- Rufai is a nocturnal and daytime stalker. He seems to constantly watch the government to slip up. Like the hungry crocodile that lies in wait at the riverbank, he pounces once his prey strays out of line. His social media pages are his weapons of attack. But his criticisms of Jonathan have also come at a great personal discomfort. The personal attacks seem to be a fulfilment of the Yoruba proverb that, “a child who keeps his mother awake crying at night will also not experience any sleep”. For his critics, the line between destructive and constructive criticisms is often blurred. He has been attacked for having a personal vendetta to settle with the “Jonathanians”, a contemptuous term he coined to describe the President and his team. He is constantly under attack by the supporters of the President. When his daughter and son died recently, the losses were said to be “punishment” for his criticisms of Jonathan! It was that bad. While these attacks often cross the lines of decency, they however mirror the level criticisms and public discourses have descended to in our country today. Really, opinions are divided as to the motive of el- Rufai. This has prompted the question: What does el-Rufai want? Are his criticisms borne out of love for country or is he just a nuisance? While it may be hard to isolate el-Rufai’s criticism of the Jonathan Presidency in the general context of widespread disenchantments with this administration, some have accused him of sometimes being overboard in his criticism. Recently, it was el-Rufai who brought to the attention of Nigerians how the findings of the Australian negotiator, Dr. Stephen Davis, had indicted a former Chief of Army Staff and, a former Governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, as the sponsors of Boko Haram. The revelation, which was first made known on Arise TV almost went unnoticed until el-Rufai posted it on his Facebook page. Then, like a wild bush fire, the report went viral. The former Army chief in retaliation labelled el-Rufai “a commander of Boko Haram”. Curiously, as el-Rufai took the beating, the author of the report walked away unscathed. But el- Rufai has swum in more troubled waters. Once, he risked the ire of some Christian leaders with a tweet about Jesus Christ. A Fatwa was declared on him. El-rufai also once retweeted a tweet deemed abusive of the President which carried an image of Jonathan kneeling down and praying to God to put an end to all Nigeria’s problems. In the image, the President was dubbed as incompetent and clueless for seemingly “outsourcing” his responsibilities to God. But one interesting feature of el-Rufai criticism of Jonathan is that he is not always the author of the tweets and updates that target the President. But once they appear on his social media pages, they soon assume new meanings and a life of their own. At those times his critics who are often self-appointed supporters of the President will reach for his jugular. It is what the Afro beat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, called, “roforofo fight”. The protagonists often fight dirty, using unprintable words-until the next episode. Having broken into national limelight as one of the top enforcers of the Obasanjo’s government, el-Rufai seems to have had his future role cut out for him. He has stayed in our national consciousness since the years he held top government positions first as the powerful czar of the Bureau for Public Enterprises, an agency responsible for privatising moribund and big government conglomerates, and later as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory where his exploits in enforcing the Abuja Masterplan earned him more enemies than friends. He also became an influential member of Obasanjo economic management team. After the collapse of the Third Term agenda, he was so powerful that he was briefly touted to succeed Obasanjo. After Obasanjo left power, his detractors sought to take their pound of flesh. He was hounded by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He faced a barrage of probes from federal legislators. He recently went underground after being sought by the State Security. In his controversial book, “The Accidental Public Servant”, which chronicles his tempestuous years in the government of Obasanjo, he told the story of his opposition to his principal’s Third Term agenda. In the book, el-Rufai narrated his opposition to the plan and how he made both covert and overt moves to scuttle an agenda he considered as morally wrong. While it has been widely acknowledged that the Jonathan administration has failed to live up to the expectations of Nigerians in many areas, many have asked if el-Rufai has the moral high ground to criticise a party he was a part of for eight years. Just like el-Rufai, Nigerians have continued to criticise the President’s handling of corruption, insecurity and lack of leadership at critical moments. But does el-Rufai’s criticisms personify this widespread anger and discontent with the Jonathan’s Presidency? Is he the right person to oppose this government? Certainly, el-Rufai is unravelling before our eyes. Theodore Roosevelt once said, “To announce that there must be no criticism of the president is morally treasonable to the American public”. Is el-Rufai taking his own version of criticism too far or did Jonathan ask for it? www.punchng.com/opinion/el-rufai-patriot-or-troublemaker/ |

The Ekiti State Governor-elect, Ayo Fayose, has vowed to look into any last minute bank transactions and appointments made by the outgoing governor, Kayode Fayemi. According to Fayose, the incumbent governor is making attempt to trap his yet-to-be-inaugurated government with financial burdens. Writing on his Twitter handle on Wednesday, the Peoples Democratic Party chieftain also warned banks not to engage in any illegal transactions with the state government. “We are aware of last minute deals by the present government with spurious awards of contracts and payments made — this is unfair to our people. A transition committee is in place to work with the government (of Kayode Fayemi) for a smooth handover and also to monitor financial transactions that involve (his) government. “Irregular expenditure and questionable financial transactions by the outgoing government should find no cooperation from commercial banks in Ekiti. Full legal action will be brought against bank found culpable of fraudulent financial dealings with the outgoing administration. “Banks should continue to conduct government business with sincerity of purpose and compliance with the highest standards of banking integrity,” he said. He added that the All Progressives Congress governor had embarked on employing people in the state without recourse to due process, saying he will look into the matter. According to Fayose, the newly created local council development areas will not be funded by his government. “A government that sacked workers on spurious grounds has now turned round to employ thousands through the backdoor – this will be looked into. “My position on the issue of purported LCDA creation is explicitly stated: they have no constitutional backing and will not be funded. While I am mindful that my mandate does not start until October 16th, I am also mindful of the potential time bombs being put in front of me,” he stated. Fayose however noted that he did not consider some of his opponents as enemies though they had unfairly criticised him. He said, “We can’t fail to mention those who choose to denigrate us –we see them not as enemies but (as people who) spur (us) to greatness and humility. Not all opponents are enemies. Some are just too far from us to understand who we really are as humans. “Those who however choose to deliberately misunderstand our position even when clearly stated are enemies of the collective good. Let me make this clear so that our opponents can hear: any landmine in my path as Gov-elect is a direct attack on our people in Ekiti State.” www.punchng.com/news/i-will-probe-fayemi-fayose/ |
An unresponsive private plane has crashed in the sea off Jamaica, officials on the island have said. The Jamaican Defence Force said the plane went down about 14 miles (22km) north-east of Port Antonio. The US had earlier scrambled two F-15 fighter jets when the plane failed to respond to air traffic control. The two people known to be on board have been named as Larry Glazer, a property developer from Rochester, New York, and his wife Jane. The couple were both licensed pilots. The plane’s pilot had indicated there was a problem and twice asked to descend to a lower altitude before permission was granted, according to a recording of the radio conversation with US traffic controllers. Contact with the plane was lost a short time later. Maj Basil Jarrett of the Jamaican Defence Force told reporters that an oil slick had been spotted about 14 miles north-east of the coastal town of Port Antonio but there was no sign yet of any wreckage. He said search and rescue teams were scouring the waters for possible survivors. As darkness fell, Jamaica suspended the search until first light on Saturday. The plane, a Socata TBM-700 built in 2014, took off from Rochester at 08:26 (12:26 GMT) en route to Naples, Florida. The North American Aerospace Defence Command (Norad) was alerted to the unresponsive plane about an hour into its flight and sent two fighter jets to monitor it. A spokesman said it was not possible for the fighter pilots to see inside the plane as the windows were frosted or fogged over. A tweet from Norad suggested the pilot or pilots could have been be unresponsive due to “possible hypoxia” – oxygen deprivation. On a recording made by LiveATC – a website that monitors air traffic control recordings – and quoted by the Associated Press, the pilot can be heard saying: “We need to descend to about (18,000 feet). We have an indication that’s not correct in the plane.” A controller replies: “Stand by.” After a pause, the controller tells the pilot to fly at 25,000ft. “We need to get lower,” the pilot responded. “Working on that,” the controller says. Controllers then clear the plane to descend to 20,000ft and the pilot acknowledges the command. Minutes later a controller asks the plane to identify itself. There is no response. According to FlightAware, the plane never carried out the last descent to 20,000ft. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo paid tribute to the couple. “The Glazers were innovative and generous people who were committed to revitalising downtown Rochester,” he said. The couple’s three children said in a statement they were “devastated”. The US Federal Aviation Administration said it co-operated with Cuba air traffic control in monitoring the plane, despite the countries not having full diplomatic relations for more than half a century. Cuba said it had authorised the US military to fly a C-130 cargo plane and two fighter jets over its airspace to investigate the incident. www.punchng.com/news/unresponsive-private-plane-crashes-off-jamaica-2/ |

The Federal Government on Wednesday reversed its decision to postpone resumption of primary and secondary schools across the nation till October 13. The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, who briefed state house correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting presided by President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday, indicated that schools resumption date might be moved back to September. Chukwu’s Education counterpart, Ibrahim Shekarau, had earlier on August 26 announced the October 13 resumption date as a precautionary step against the spread of Ebola virus But at a briefing following the FEC meeting on Wednesday, Chukwu said experts’ opinion had indicated that “students could safely resume from mid-September.” The minister said specific resumption date would be announced after a meeting between the Minister of Education, states’ Commissioners of Education and other stakeholders involved in the earlier postponement of the resumption date to October 13. “The Minister of Education was directed by council to convene an emergency meeting with all states commissioners of Education in order to agree on when schools can resume nationwide,” he said. At the briefing with the Health minister were the Ministers of Information, Labaran Maku; Transport, Umar Idris; National Planning, Abubakar Suleiman, and Power (State), Mohammed Wakil. Chukwu, who also gave a weekly report to the Council on the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak, said that there were currently 296 contacts under surveillance in the country. The minister, who refuted insinuations that 60 Ebola contacts were missing in Port Harcourt, said of the 296 contacts actually under surveillance in the entire country, 255 of them were in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and the remaining 41 in Lagos State. He explained that investigations had proved rumoured outbreak of the disease in Abuja and Calabar to be negative. He added that Enugu was completely free from the disease, saying that the nurse who initially escaped surveillance in Lagos to meet her husband in Enugu had also tested negative to the disease. He said the member of ECOWAS staff, Olu-Ibukun Koye, who jumped surveillance and took the virus to Port Harcourt, had developed strong anti- bodies against the virus and as such could not infect others with it. He said it could not yet be determined if Koye would be prosecuted or not. www.punchng.com/news/schools-may-resume-mid-september-says-minister/ |

Pastor Adeboye is one "pulpitarian" that seduces my grin. Adeboye has proven that once you tell a story that begins, ends and centres around "Baba God", it can be believed by Nigerian Christians no matter how senseless and untrue it is. The RCCG Christian clan in Nigeria is one Christian sect that can believe any story Pastor Adeboye's voice* "Baba God says there is somebody that will be overtaken by his anger after reading this...." The RCCG is the fastest growing merchandise in Nigeria. Besides potential conflict zones, the RCCG merchandize is just about everywhere in Nigeria including the bedroom of the oga in Aso Rock. This is to show that "Dia ris God oo". The God of Daddy Adeboye is really a "Baba God". A Baba of private jets, bank CEO clients on EFCC lists, oil magnets patronage, polithiefcians and most especially the man in Aso Rock. Pastor Adeboye Pastor Adeboye is one "pulpitarian" that seduces my grin. Adeboye has proven that once you tell a story that begins, ends and centres around "Baba God", it can be believed by Nigerian Christians no matter how senseless and untrue it is. The RCCG Christian clan in Nigeria is one Christian sect that can believe any story with the tag of "Baba (God)." What is more marvelous than the fact that adults in the 21st century can believe a story that a man travelled from Benin to Lagos on an empty fuel tank? None of them saw it but someone claimed that some sky-Baba told him to travel that far without looking at his fuel gauge. Boom! Everyone believes. Pastor Adeboye has reached the level where he can tell adults that he went for jogging in heaven before coming to mount the pulpit and the religious folks will believe. I am jealous. What can I smoke to reach the level where I can tell people stories and they'll believe it to be true whether or not it is a lie? But I do not understand why Baba God has not told Daddy Adeboye to do a crusade in the North in places like Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Borno? Haba! Borno? That is too harsh now! Even Baba does not have such imaginations to send our Daddy to Maiduguri. Baba God (*in Adeboye's voice*) is not interested in winning Boko Haram souls; he'll rather concentrate in repeating same old message to people who have already heard it in Lagos and the South. Baba does not need the souls of terrorists and almajaris, so he'll rather concern himself in giving his servant private jets, schools, offerings, tithes, etc. They are more important than the souls of Almajiris and Boko Haramists. Isn't it awesome that Baba could make a car drive without fuel from Benin to Lagos (which nobody saw except Baba's servant), but cannot use that same power to arrest Boko Haramists? Is it that somebody's Baba cannot do that or somebody has refused to harken to that voice of Baba or perhaps somebody is afraid to come in contact with any incident that will send him to his Baba God? Hmmm, somebody is afraid to go and meet Baba. Well, it's non of my business before his social bodyguards will "kee" me. RCCG members are to Nigeria what Ebola is to Liberia; they are an epidemic. One thing about them; they do not fail to announce their presence. Their stickers always do the talking. "Redeem family" on their door posts, on the car, in the office and if it were possible to tattoo it on their forehead, they'll do just that. Even the ones that are flying with their legs will tattoo it on their briefcases with faith that one day they'll paste it on their cars. These folks can believe anything. A typical Redeem member can believe that he can enter Dubai and automatically and then Baba will give him the ability to speak Arabic instantaneously so that a big firm will pay him in millions of dollars to translate Arabic to English for them overnight. It's not their fault. When you believe that someone drove from Benin to Lagos on an empty fuel tank without seeing it, then you can believe anything. The RCCG church service; well, I'll give them a C. Unlike that of Christ Embassy which full of unending drama scenes, the RCCG service can put you to snoring. A mathematician will always be a mathematician, even in the way he talks. Is it just me that notices that Adeboye speaks like he is trying to solve arithmetic without a calculator? It is good packaging though. For it is easier to seduce people on the pulpit when you appear and sound humble. Talking that way will never anger you to slap a poor woman for saying she is "a witch for Christ". At least he is not temperamental like his Ota counterpart. Another good thing about talking that way is that it makes it so easy to go unnoticed that you are a lazy praying man. Adeboye simply calls-out prayer topics and suffers the poor congregation to pray lengthy and chew their hearts out and after that he ends it with a short line "my Baba says it is done" and they shout Amen! After all, they won't call it laziness; it is an excuse for faith. If it was me that was praying that way they'll say I do not have a spiritual life, since there is no Daddy or Papa attached to my name; I am jealous. On the other hand, why would you have to extend your prayers when you already have private jets and a Commander-in-Client? What do you want to pray for? Leave the prayer for the poor men to tear apart. I want to make an appeal that the dear Daddy should refrain from praying and prophesying about national issues. The first time I heard him speak about national issue was when President Jonathan wanted to contest in 2011. He said Baba God will send good leaders to Nigeria and we ended up with President Goodluck Jonathan. If president GEJ is what Baba intended to send to us, all I can say is "Baba, you can do better than this." Few months before the subsidy removal he prayed that Baba will work on the country. Before we knew it, the President removed subsidy. Again, he prayed and cursed Boko Haram, few weeks later Boko Haram attacked Yobe schools and now Baba's curse on Boko Haram has led to thr Chibok tragedy and many more. When news broke that American soldeirs will be joining the Chibok pursuit, he said that Baba will cause the girls to be released soon. Baba must have a special kind of soon. Whether or not Adeboye's Baba functions, nobody asks questions because nobody questions Baba's spokesman. I don't know whether Adeboye is Baba or Baba is Adeboye. Because if Baba cannot be questioned and Adeboye too cannot be questioned, it means Baba and Adeboye are the same. Well, let me keep quiet "Babatards" will nail me for talking about Baba. Babacracy, you too sweet! Mixed reactions yesterday trailed the reintroduction of banks the N65 charge on remote-on-us Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). The Central Bank had in a circular to the banks stated that the reintroduction of remote- on-us ATM cash withdrawal would now be N65 per transaction as against the former N100 per transaction, suspended in December 2012. A cross-section of banks’ customers who spoke to Daily Sun in Lagos expressed displeasure over the development as some of them have already been debited N65 today for exceeding the targeted transactions on other banks’ ATMs. While some customers felt that the fees charged for the ATM remote-on-us usage should be further reduced to between N35 and N50, others argue that the fees should be proportional with the amount withdrawn by the customer. A customer, who preferred to be addressed as Musa condemned the policy, describing it as anti- people and a demonstration of lack of foresight. He said, “it is not a welcome development to the masses. I think it is only in Nigeria that this kind of zigzag policy is happening. How on earth will a CBN introduce a policy to protect and reduce the sufferings of its people and then later, after a change of one person in the CBN, the same set of people that agreed on that policy will now reverse the policy? “What benefit will they get in making people suffer and why are our leaders not analysing situations before they introduce harsh economic policies that always make people lose confidence in them. How can the reintroduction of that policy strengthen our economy?” President of National Association of Nigeria Traders, Ken Okoaha, in his reaction said: “As far as traders are concerned, this is a reverse gear on the cashless drive of the CBN. We believe the current situation should prevail until such a time when we generally embrace cashless policy.” Also speaking, Vincent Dauda, a customer of one of the commercial banks in the county, noted that he regretted the policy summersault of the CBN, saying, “I used to have very high regards for the CBN but recently I have had reasons to suspect that they are no longer thorough with their fiscal policy responsibility. “Firstly, they asked banks to withdraw ATM from public locations and they complied. Shortly after, they said the banks can now deploy, then they stopped what we felt was an exorbitant charge. What does this suggest? Failure of feasibility study by the CBN, period.” Meanwhile, the apex bank and the Bankers Committee stated that the decision was in the economic interest of the country, as the removal of the charges had a negative effect on the cashless policy. “The wear and tear as well as the frequency of servicing the ATMs has increased significantly. Indeed, some customers were beginning to abuse the use of ATMs through countless withdrawals. This development has led to increase in cash transactions, which negates the bank’s cashless policy,” the CBN said in a circular. According to the CBN, if a part of this cost goes unabated, the banks may be forced to reject transactions coming from their customers at other banks’ ATMs, thereby frustrating the inter- operability of payment systems. sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=79844 |
Supporters of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State clashed at the popular Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan, on Sunday, over drilling of a borehole for the traders. The market was recently gutted by fire. The inability of the market fire station to get water had been blamed for the inferno that started just after 9 pm on August 16. Apart from the state Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, who promised to help the traders with financial assistance, other notable people in the state visited the traders and promised to help them. One of them was the PDP governorship aspirant, Seyi Makinde, who said he would drill a borehole at the market to forestall future occurrence. Makinde made good his promise by starting the project. However, on Sunday, workers at the site of the project were allegedly attacked by some people, who also blocked the 70-foot borehole with stones and pebbles. The attackers were alleged to have been sponsored by the Chairman of the South-West council area of the state, Mr. Taoheed Adeleke, under whose council the market falls. Eyewitnesses said hoodlums came in large number with cutlasses and other weapons. Adeleke, however, denied. www.punchng.com/news/oyo-apc-pdp-clash/ |
In what has been described as an expansion drive of the Boko Haram caliphate, it early this morning, launched an attack on Bama, one of the few major towns in Borno State still out of the control of the dreaded Islamist sect. It was gathered that the insurgents stormed the town in their hundreds, early Monday morning, but were repelled by the military who fought to push them back. The soldiers attached to the Nigerian Army barracks located in the town were called to task and after engaging the insurgents for over an hour of heavy bombardment, they were able to repel them, according to sources. A source said the soldiers were successful in driving the insurgents back through the bush. Though the actual number of casualties could not be ascertained, it was gathered that not less than 20 persons were killed. It was also gathered that there is a massive exodus of residents from the town, which is about 64km from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital as residents fear the insurgents might return back heavily armed on a retaliatory mission. More details later. www.punchng.com/politics/boko-haram-launches-attack-on-bama-in-borno/ |

Ten of the 14 aspirants contesting for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship ticket in the Adamawa State governorship by-election have come together against Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and three others. The others are former Lagos State Military Administrator Gen. Buba Marwa, ex-Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Executive Secretary Dr. Ahmed Modibo and former governorship candidate Marcus Gundiri. In the gang-up are Acting Governor Umar Fintiri, Mr. Ahmed Gulak, Awwal Tukur, James Barka, Sen Abubakar Girei, Dr. Idi Hong, Aliyu Kama, Umar Ardo, Jerry Kumdisi and Dr. Andrawus Sawa. Eight of the aspirants stormed the party secretariat in Yola yesterday. Finitiri and Dr. Sawa were absent. Spokesman of the group and former presidential adviser Ahmed Gulak said the 10 of them had resolved to come together in the interest of the party and the people. “We are the only PDP family members; any other person outside is not PDP. Any other person outside the listed persons is not PDP,” Gulak said. Gulak said they would remain vigilant for today’s ward congress to check any attempt to use non party members as delegates by any person or group. “Tomorrow (today) is ward congress. Anybody who brings three delegates from the 226 wards outside the party structure will be resisted,” Gulak warned. He said they would resist any imposition of candidate from the national leadership of the PDP and the Presidency for the October 11 by- election. Gulak said they resolved not to allow a stranger to become the standard bearer of the party they laboured for. Gulak said they would not recognise Ribadu, Dr. Moddibo, Gen. Marwa and Mr. Gundiri as bonafide members of the party. He insisted that the group would not allow an outsider to rob them of their right in the house they built. Gulak boasted that one of the 10 aspirants will emerge as the party’s standard bearer. The party’s state deputy chairman, Alhaji Jingi Rufai, praised the aspirants for their decision to unite for a common cause saying their action would ensure transparency in the primary. Rufai said party officials had met over the ward congress and resolved that strict compliance with the party constitution would be observed. Rufai said the party was aware of some “fake registers” and membership forms in circulation, warning that those planning to rig the congress would be disappointed. But the immediate past state Secretary of PDP and a leading campaigner for the Ribadu candidacy, Mr Phineas Elisha, said the action of the aspirants amounted to indiscipline as the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP had cleared them to contest. Elisha said the party’s constitution should determine who is a member and not individuals. “You cannot just come out because you hate the face of a person to say he is not a member. “How can you say that a person that registered, request for and was granted waiver is not a member of a party? People need to show respect to the party’s constitution,” Elisha said. thenationonlineng.net/new/fintiri-nine-others-gang-up-against-ribadu-marwa/ |
The three major political parties in Oyo State have started flexing muscles over 2015 general elections, with each vowing that it would emerge victorious. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC) and Accord yesterday told The Nation in separate interviews that nothing would stop each of them from taking over control of Agodi Government House in the February the election. Speaking for the Accord, its Publicity Secretary, Dr. Nureni Adeniran, said the fact that the PDP and APC won in Ekiti and Osun states showed that voters in Southwest place more premium on candidates rather than parties. Adeniran, who faulted suggestions that only the PDP and the APC were the main parties and that the battle looks squarely positioned between them, said: “PDP won in Ekiti and APC won in Osun. Accord is going to win in Oyo State. Those thinking that the battle is squarely between APC and PDP should know that Southwest is not homogeneous as they are thinking because it is not the same set of voters that will vote and it is not the same thing that is happening in all the states. “Most of them in Ekiti knew from the onset that Fayose was going to win in Ekiti and I can tell you that we knew that Aregebesola was going to win in Osun State. So, we can say that Accord will win in Oyo State.” Adeniran said those who think that Accord would be pushed to the background were living in illusion, pointing out that Oyo State voters are asking its governorship hopeful, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, to come back as governor. Also, a chieftain of the PDP and the senator representing Oyo North Senatorial District, Hosea Agbooola, said the voters were tired of the APC government. He assured that the PDP would replace the former after the next year election. His words: “You are a living witness to what happened in Osun State. But Oyo State politics is different from that of Osun State. I am assuring you that the people of Oyo State are tired of APC government. They are tired of taking directives from Lagos State. So, I am assuring you that come 2015, PDP will emerge as the governor.” But the state Chairman of the APC, Chief Akin Oke, rubbished their claims. He wondered the basis on which either the PDP or Accord would return to power, having squandered the state’s resources and inflicted violence and brigandage on residents during their eight-year reign between 2003 and 2011. Oke said: “PDP or Senator Ladoja winning election in Oyo State again? On what basis? Our government outperformed both of them within our three years in office when compared with their eight years in office combined. Is it in the area of security, infrastructural development, urban renewal or what? As far as we are concerned, based on Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s performance, Senator Ladoja’s performance in four years was nil. So was Otunba Alao-Akala, who inflicted violence and gangsterism on the state, among others, in his four-year reign. “I base my own position on valid yardsticks. PDP is even worse at federal level now so much that they cannot go out and ask for people’s votes based on the performance of the party. What they are now doing is to hide under the name of President Goodluck Jonathan, believing that they can get some sympathy. “Surely by 2015, we are not just going to contest, but we are going to win the election.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/apc-pdp-accord-flex-muscle-in-oyo-over-2015-poll/ |
